Captaincy fails for over two-thirds of top 10k Fantasy managers

Manchester City’s unexpectedly narrow 2-1 win over Southampton came at a cost for a large chunk of the top 10,000 managers in Fantasy Premier League.

Between them, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) were handed the armband by almost 70% of the FPL bosses who were inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 11 deadline.

The premium midfield pair duly blanked against the Saints, with Sterling picking up a booking to compound his owners’ misery.

Just under 6.5% of this elite group had more joy with a Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) captaincy, at least, while around one in four top 10k managers overlooked the City trio altogether.

The highest-owned player inside the top 10,000 is Jamie Vardy (£9.3m).

The Leicester City striker, who faces Crystal Palace on Sunday, featured in only 33.25% of top 10k squads ahead of the Gameweek 10 fixtures but his 20-point haul against Southampton has understandably increased his popularity.

Of course, a fair number of the new entrants inside the top 10,000 would have been helped there by owning Vardy in the first place.

The Foxes’ forward was by some distance the most-bought FPL asset of Gameweek 11, being transferred in by just over 675,000 managers.

De Bruyne remains in one in three top 10k squads, with Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m) – both of whom delivered double-digit hauls on Saturday – also widely owned assets.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) popularity continues to dwindle, with just over one in four top 10,000 managers hanging onto the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah doesn’t feature in the top 10k Wildcard template, with Sadio Mane (£11.9m) proving a much more popular buy.

A two-man strike force of Vardy and Abraham is being widely favoured, with budget asset Aaron Connolly (£4.6m) the third-most-popular FPL forward among the elite managers who used their Wildcard this week.

There is predictably a lot of crossover between the template Wildcards inside the top 10k and outside of it, with Salah and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) proving more popular in the chasing pack.

We have now hit the 50% mark for Wildcard usage in the top 10k.

One in four of the top 10,000 FPL managers have already used their Triple Captain chips, with the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips not as heavily relied on.

Chip usage inside the top 10k

Just under 33% of the top 10,000 have yet to use a single chip but over 25% have used at least two already.

2.2% of the top 10k have maxed out on their allotted chips already, leaving only their second Wildcard to be used.

Totally frustrated. My team is not performing and there are 4 or 5 players that need to go. Should I wild card now or wait until international break?

This is how I would line-up without WC:

    Pope
    TAA, Digne, Zouma
    Sterling, Maddison, Mount, CHO
    Pukki, Aubameyang, Vardy

    Cantwell, Otamendi, Lundstram,

    What should I do?!

I would be wary of wildcarding now. Because the Liverpool vs City game will probably influence your decisions a lot.

But yeah you got a few issues there with that team...

Was thinking of bringing in Liverpool after ManC game.

Your list of problems is same as mine except for Pope. What’s wrong with him (given going for cheaper keeper, rotating with Heaton)?

You should triple Liverpool for upcoming fixtures.
I would sell Digne, Zouma and OTA from you defense.
          Pukki is a must go.
CHO aswell if he doesn't play next week.

i think if you look at your team this week most of your players that you prob want out got decent fixture. Wait for Chelsea game and presser later in the week for CHO, and if you thinking of WC i would maybe try a punt on someone, CHo or Ota out, punt on Iwobi, JWP, Grealish etc?

Liverpool have 2 cs, only Norwich has less.

Robbo and taa are 2nd and 3rd scoring defenders.

        Liverpool had really tough schedule.

2-3 clean sheets in the next 5-6 games will make massive difference.

If you look the cs they've lost, it was literally only one chance per game.

        Newcastle Leicester arsenal Southampton.

Double up on pools defence is the way to go, then you can have 3 midfielders (robbo taa and mane/Salah)

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
            4 years, 4 months ago

Agree with most of what you said except in all those matches they gave up further chances rather than the one chance. They will annoyingly keep conceding one since they have changed the way they play this season compared to last. But granted the second a cs comes it will be monster hauls

Maybe not one chance but definitely not massive amount.

I am surprised how taa isn't getting double digits every week, this guy is unbelievable

                  4 years, 4 months ago

Yeah he's close every week to a Lundstram haul. But the new high line is just suicidal, it's maybe not a crazy amount of shots or chances they give up but one lapse usually results in a one on one. It's like how vardy outperforms his xg, because the kind of chance he gets is usually in behind one on one- these are the chances Liverpool give up a couple of times per game

You have the ideal front 3 IMO, KDB, a Liverpool defender and a decent budget keeper. So you would be playing a WC to tidy up around the bones of a strong skeleton. Still could have it's merits.

There is plenty of time until the GW12 deadline, but if no injuries or something extraordinary during the CL I would say Vardy. Tammy is also very exciting as Jorginho is banned for next GW and he could be on penalties as well which will further boost him as an option!

Finally and far too late I know got in Lundstram ( for Cancelo- as had 2 frees for this week decided on expensive 1 week punt for Otamendi which was expensive mistake ) but is this line-up good enough going forward or would you play WC to shake things up ?

Ok not complaining about Lundy haul this GW but it really ruined my plans of benching him next 2-3 GWs and transferring Boly to a defender with good 3-4 fixtures (other WOL or MAnU).

Current defense - TAA Pereyra 3.9 Lundy “Boly”

Would you just play Lundy and save the FT or downgrade Boly to upgrade mid or get a defender with decent next 3-4 fixtures

apparently but it´s the kind of nailed that is first choice in a very demanding position thus making him vulnerable to rotation during christmas for example. seems to get subbed 70min in some games, not sure why but could be a tactical thing or fitness related thing. if fifth defender and all four other is nailed i would gamble on him, consider it myself going with something like TAA, Pereira, Lund, Lascelles, Janmaat (Pereira might be LIV defender through christmas as leic goes on a bit of a tough run then).

Just realised the main problem in getting rid of Salah or sterling and just having mane, no idea where all that extra money should go. There's really nothing else to spend it on, there's value in midfield, value in strike, big hitting defenders aren't keeping cs.

while i understand our sentiment i think you can spread them so you can have a slightly different team structure, firstly, shuffling money back at defense might be more worthwhile, and also keeping some very good "almost premiums" like Son, Vardy, KDB and have like Mané as the one premium above 10m. All four has fixture and captainable, and you can have either JImi and Tammy or a budget striker with Grealish as fifth mid.

pool front three aren't exactly in the best form (except mane). I feel after the recent scenes a lot of folks will sell Salah and may double up on robo and Trent. that will cause them to be priced out/blocked from getting a double up in attack.. if the front three then hit form it maybe a struggle to bring em back. other things to consider is att double up provide better capt options and give you cover against an explosion from either mane or salah (the att player you don't own).. also feels like it offers more flexibility with premium players if they also hit form which feels inevitable (granted they are underperforming atm)

in terms of rank, it also offers a more attacking approach to help climb ranks, especially with teams of higher value at this stage

Please comment your opinion.. very interested on the matter

Reflecting on yesterday's thoughts during City game:

Going forward I'm thinking a Sterling + KdB double is too expensive for their performance. Thinking of replacing one of them with Dilva after LIV. Question is who?
KdB has been playing further from the box lately, thus not getting into goalscoring positions as much. But he's still very potent assists-wise
Sterling seems to be hugging the touchline a lot without Mendy, Guardiola's screaming instructions were required yesterday for Angelino to play wider and Sterling to get in the box. Also when Aguero plays, he occupies the best positions in the box, which limits Sterling's chances, Jesus is a somewhat better partner for him. Problem is Mendy's not nailed even with Zinchenko out, and Jesus will play less than Aguero, so there's a risk of Sterling rarely getting more than one goal/assist.
                    What do you guys think?

out of the city assets he has the best record v lpool. He'll definitely play in the most important game for city by far this season. He'll be rested midweek. he loves scoring important big game goals.

I said against Liverpool not anfield and I was talking mainly under pep. his goals did come at home though (something to note for sure). also city don't typically do well at anfield so its not just him, its the team. this however is a very important game for city (maybe most important meeting between the two sides) and they'll have to depend heavily on attack since their defence is pretty suspect rn.
Last year the game at Etihad was pretty crucial and city won 2-1

Not sure you can so easily dismiss his record at Anfield. Also think a draw isn't the worst result for both sides so could be a repeat of last year's cagey 0-0. Pep may even favour Jesus' workrate in this sort of game.

But if you think he will do well then hold.

                      Trossard but fixtures aren’t great

Grealish has been moved centrally and whilst has a slight injury could prove fruitful - fixtures are mixed

Man U away and Arsenal away really aren't that bad.

I’d feel more confident if they were home matches - same with Liverpool

Not too keen on switching to King. What about Jimmy?

I must day that last season going without Salah was always a bit concerning but this season I haven't even seriously considered him so far!

Can't afford Jiminez ... anyone fancy Doherty for Wolves upcoming fixtures? (Ottamendi replacement)

Have a backline of Lund Rico Mendy TAA Perreira. Start them all and bench Mousset and Connolly?
