United brought back down to Earth as Cherries defence impresses again

Bournemouth 1-0 Manchester United

  • Goal: Josh King (£6.3m)
  • Assist: Adam Smith (£4.3m)
  • Bonus: Smith x3, King x2, Aaron Ramsdale (£4.5m) x 1

Bournemouth secured a narrow victory over Ole Gunnar Solsjaker’s Manchester United with Josh King’s (£6.3m) first half-strike enough to give the Cherries their first win since Gameweek 6.

This was seemingly a match-up that favoured the visitors, who had lost just one of their last eight games in all competitions, yet the Red Devils were unable to overcome Eddie Howe’s side, who ended their recent drought to prevent a fourth successive game without a goal.

The Cherries were initially overwhelmed by United’s frontline, with Daniel James (£6.1m) looking very lively as the Welshman sought to exploit Bournemouth’s left flank, but Howe’s side persisted and were rewarded after clever work from King on the stroke of half-time.

The Norwegian, who had not registered any attacking returns since Gameweek 7 against West Ham, collected a cross from Adam Smith (£4.3m) and flicked the ball over Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m) before carefully guiding a finish beyond the reach of David de Gea (£5.5m).

Whilst the performance of the Cherries’ front four was impressive, yet another clean sheet for a backline including budget defender Diego Rico (£4.3m) will be starting to catch the attention of Fantasy managers who are yet to invest in Bournemouth’s defensive assets.

This was a third successive shut-out for Howe’s side, whilst also taking their goals conceded to just one in their last four matches. There is unquestionable value in the likes of Rico, especially considering Bournemouth’s next two fixtures of Newcastle and Wolves.

But this newfound defensive solidity could also lead to Fantasy interest in Nathan Ake (£5.0m), who has already scored and assisted so far this season, and the Dutchman put in an impressive display against United to disrupt their attacking play whilst also marshalling the Bournemouth backline.

Managers in ownership of Wilson are likely to be faced with a considerable dilemma in retaining the Englishman’s services after yet another blank, with the striker registering just one goal attempt throughout the lunchtime kick-off. The forward has now failed to register attacking returns in four consecutive matches, despite starting the season with a blank-free opening seven Gameweeks.

Saturday afternoon saw Jefferson Lerma (£4.8m) and Ashley Young (£5.4m) pick up their fifth bookings of the season, meanwhile, which will see the duo miss their sides’ next league fixtures in Gameweek 12.

Although this defeat marked yet another disappointing domestic result for United, particularly for those managers in ownership of defensive assets such as Harry Maguire (£5.4m) or Wan-Bissaka, the likes of Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Anthony Martial (£7.6m) and James did look lively in the early stages of the lunchtime kick-off.

The promise shown in the first half of Saturday’s game amounted to little, though, with Solskjaer saying afterwards:

I thought the front four looked promising but flattered to deceive a little bit today. It looked like we could create chances but we just didn’t have the last pass or the last finish and that’s something we need to improve on.

We had a lack of quality at times in front of goal. I thought we started well and opened them up with Dan James down the side, but we couldn’t get the important first goal. Then after 15 or 20 minutes, the game settled down and I thought they grew into it. It became a 50/50 match and you thought whoever would get the first goal would win this.

With the club having lost four of their first 11 league fixtures for the first time since 1990, United’s recent resurgence has been placed in some perspective.

Question marks will be asked by Fantasy managers of a team displaying such inconsistency, despite the flickers of hope that Rashford, Martial and James are displaying and the relative cut-price appeal of that trio.

With fixtures on the horizon including Brighton, Sheffield United and Aston Villa, who are exhibiting some strong defensive form in the current campaign (the Seagulls and the Blades are in the top three for clean sheets in 2019/20), keeping the faith in United’s attacking assets will be a difficult task for us FPL managers.

The value that James continues to offer at £6.1m cannot be ignored – ranking as United’s third-most-valuable player for form in the 2019/20 campaign behind just Scott McTominay (£5.1m) and De Gea.

This was a fixture that served as a timely reminder for managers that although United had been on a respectable run of results, they are hard to trust as Fantasy assets.

Defensive inconsistency coupled with a lack of reliable goalscoring options means that the Red Devils remain a lukewarm prospect, with yet another defeat perhaps being the straw to break the camel’s back for those managers still in ownership of United’s defensive options.

Those of us looking to bring United’s attacking assets in ahead of the next three “winnable” fixtures will also have a few concerns after this weekend.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Smith, S. Cook, Ake, Rico, H. Wilson (L. Cook 86′), Lerma, Billing, Fraser; C. Wilson, King.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka(Williams 80′), Maguire, Lindelof, Young; McTominay, Fred; Pereira (Lingard 68′), James (Greenwood 80′), Rashford; Martial.

Not really the one who brags a lot,but my yesterdays defense deserves a mention:

    Ramsdale - 9pts
    Lundstram - 21pts
    Montoya - 12pts
    TAA - 7pts
    = 49 points
...and then there is Sterling captain..

    Almost bottomed.

Probably controversial round here but anyone considering holding Kun for LIV?

If I hold tight, I would have 2FT for the IB. Team looks like this:

    1FT 0.4itb
    Pope
    TAA, Lunds, Rico
    Mané (v), KDB, Mount, Barnes
    Kun, Vardy (C), Abraham
    (McGovern) (Willems, Dendo, Boly)

Thinking it may be the sensible move rather than rushing to move him/ Boly out for a hit

    What do you think?

I remember now it was Kick Off the pure football game, and Player Manager was the spin-off. Got my Amiga in 1990 I think, it was £400 with 512MB RAM. Worked my backside off to afford it. Probably like £2500 today or something!

I couldn’t afford one, but had a fairly well to do mate who used to get all the latest gear.
Luckily he lived just up the road, so I used to spend most my weekends at his house.

I don’t know, mate. The gaming experience is excellent now and you can even make a career of it. My lad is able to play against his friends and cousins and I can play my twin brother at Madden despite him being over 100 miles away 🙂

Will never forget going around my mates house to play kick off but things are just as good now, if not better!

    Which option do you prefer:

    A) Connolly > Jimenez
    B) Auba & dendonker > Jimenez & son -4
    C) save free transfer and next week do Auba, dendinker & mount > Jimenez, son & martial

    Rest of team:
    Gazza / button
    Tomori / lundstram / Rico / soyuncu/ lowton
    Mane / sterling / kdb / mount / dendonker
    Auba / Tammy / connolly

I dint captain Sterling when he actually gave returns. I would say stick captaincy all gws to player you will think will break 250 pts. That way 500 pts from captain isnt bad deal. I am.looking at downgrading Sterling to Perez/Tielemans so can do Greenwood to Vardy. I will captain Vardy thid gw and in liv blank. Rest all perma captain Salah as now knee jerkers removed him so he less owned too

That 10% skill will ensure you finish in top 10k...Rest all is luck granted as last season I had gone with Sterling all season over Kun I would have fought for the title. But I was obsessed with Kun class and finishes and underestimated that although Sterling was erratic, he was getting extra points for goals, cleanies and was more nailed

Such fine margins to averting disaster in this game. With two FTs this week I wanted Vardy in, but didn't want to sell Kane. I was close to selling Jimenez and Abraham to do it, could just about afford it but with Connolly. Decided to hold off...phew.

Also, started Ota, but switched Lundstram to first sub as the transfer I actually did was a bit of housekeeping, Cantwell>Dendoncker and bank the 0.3m. Ota came on, luckily for me Grealish was injured...phew.

Have now sold Ota, starting Lundstram every week now. If I want Vardy it will have to be at Kane's expense or not at all. Hopefully he outscores Vardy today to complete the run of jammy luck!

Sanchez Flores on Janmaat to Femenia substitution yesterday.

Asked his response to the reaction of the fans, Sanchez Flores said: “It’s normal because sometimes in the stands we are reading a different match and probably they are thinking we have one striker on the bench. But from my point of view I have the feeling with [Daryl] Janmaat we are not deep anymore.

"He made a very, very good first half but he’s not deeper anymore and we need someone deeper, so the only player we have to do that in this moment was Kiko [Femenia]. Someone fresh and the position was normal, player for player.”

    https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/18011130.watford-head-coach-responds-fans-booing-chelsea-defeat/

By “deep” do you think he means, he prefers Janmaat defensively but going forward Femenia offers more?

But seriously, I haven’t a clue what Flores is trying to say. Janmaat no longer playing deep but they needed someone deep?? Maybe deep for him is getting forward?

        1. HNI
          • 10 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

Yeah maybe deep is forward in this case as he said one striker on bench thing. Deep techincally means defensive but then English isnt his first language and wouldnt bother much with watford assets anyway considering much better options at same price points

          1. Twisted Saltergater
            • 14 Years
            4 years, 4 months ago

Cheers, yeah I think that’s the right interpretation. I’d usually avoid Watford assets too but Lundstram is current my 5th defender and I want to promote him a bit. Janmaat at 4.3m has some attacking threat and is the cheapest playing option now (along with Rico).

If you are scoring 16 pts from a bench boost it is decent IMO. Most people play it in a DGW with crap on their bench and are happy to get 4x2x2 = 16pts.

Connolly was just a starter due to Norwich, really thought he'd deliver, he'll be at the back of my bench going forward as planned. Not a success but not terrible either mate thanks.

Looking at my team think 90% would choose same?
Double Pool defenders, five top mids, Tammy & Jamie up top.

I bet you put £500 on him at the bookies being top scoring defender before the season started?

Seems like Pep is trying to work out how to beat stubborn teams without KDB playing really far forward. But it isn't working. Time for Pep to go back to what works:

    Ederson
    Walker Stones Otamendi Mendy
    KDB Fernandinho Silva
    Bernardo Aguero Sterling

He’s only started Stones & Otamendi together 3 times in the last 60 opportunities

Seriously thought I was getting out of jail with starting Ota/benching Lundy until Pep did a Pep in the 90th minute...

White flag going up John Lundstram - you win - permanent starting position earned alongside Robbo & TAA for foreseeable future

Hiding Ota on the bench till post-IB & saving a transfer

As if you didn't start him against Burnley Hahaha ffs. I warned so many... Did you do Mane or Salah to Sterl in the end?

Yep did Salah > Sterling for the hit because of the Salah fitness report from 10pm Friday night - which in fairness turned out to be bang on!

So was basically any single Sterling attacking return and that Ota 1-minuter away from it being a great gameweek

We’re all used to this though - I’ve long ago been desensitised to good players getting bad scores in good fixtures and vice-versa, par for the FPL course 🙂

Hahaha owell, v happy I didn't do Mane to Sterl for a hit hahaha. Bottled KDB captain though, had it on Mane and Abraham twice.

Still don’t know where mane pulled that header out of, ridiculous angle - he won’t score those every week lol

Did you see the match. He missed 3 before those. He looks a good buy even with that price wnd wondering to go Salah Mane TAA instead of initial TAA Robbo Salah. Today Lei performance may help.me.decide if i need funds for vardy or not

Same, to compound I had Mousett & Rico benched.
But I have double pool defenders, Vardy & Tammy up top.

Yep Rico benched here too lol - but TAA & Robbo smashed it again so not too worried about Rico

        Lundstram though - wow

    2FT 0.1 ITB

    Pope Button
    TAA Otamendi Rico Lundstram Dunk
    Sterling KDB Salah Mount Maddison
    Abraham Jimenez Wickham

Thoughts on Wickham and Salah to Vardy and Dendoncker ?

Will get Mane in for KDB or Sterling next week.

If Son looks good today, would Son in for Sterling be an option(have KDB )?

Reckon it's worth the GK switch (upgrading button) to play someone over Hendo for GW13 and possibly next week? Or just accept the 0 points...
