United brought back down to Earth as Cherries defence impresses again

Bournemouth 1-0 Manchester United

  • Goal: Josh King (£6.3m)
  • Assist: Adam Smith (£4.3m)
  • Bonus: Smith x3, King x2, Aaron Ramsdale (£4.5m) x 1

Bournemouth secured a narrow victory over Ole Gunnar Solsjaker’s Manchester United with Josh King’s (£6.3m) first half-strike enough to give the Cherries their first win since Gameweek 6.

This was seemingly a match-up that favoured the visitors, who had lost just one of their last eight games in all competitions, yet the Red Devils were unable to overcome Eddie Howe’s side, who ended their recent drought to prevent a fourth successive game without a goal.

The Cherries were initially overwhelmed by United’s frontline, with Daniel James (£6.1m) looking very lively as the Welshman sought to exploit Bournemouth’s left flank, but Howe’s side persisted and were rewarded after clever work from King on the stroke of half-time.

The Norwegian, who had not registered any attacking returns since Gameweek 7 against West Ham, collected a cross from Adam Smith (£4.3m) and flicked the ball over Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m) before carefully guiding a finish beyond the reach of David de Gea (£5.5m).

Whilst the performance of the Cherries’ front four was impressive, yet another clean sheet for a backline including budget defender Diego Rico (£4.3m) will be starting to catch the attention of Fantasy managers who are yet to invest in Bournemouth’s defensive assets.

This was a third successive shut-out for Howe’s side, whilst also taking their goals conceded to just one in their last four matches. There is unquestionable value in the likes of Rico, especially considering Bournemouth’s next two fixtures of Newcastle and Wolves.

But this newfound defensive solidity could also lead to Fantasy interest in Nathan Ake (£5.0m), who has already scored and assisted so far this season, and the Dutchman put in an impressive display against United to disrupt their attacking play whilst also marshalling the Bournemouth backline.

Managers in ownership of Wilson are likely to be faced with a considerable dilemma in retaining the Englishman’s services after yet another blank, with the striker registering just one goal attempt throughout the lunchtime kick-off. The forward has now failed to register attacking returns in four consecutive matches, despite starting the season with a blank-free opening seven Gameweeks.

Saturday afternoon saw Jefferson Lerma (£4.8m) and Ashley Young (£5.4m) pick up their fifth bookings of the season, meanwhile, which will see the duo miss their sides’ next league fixtures in Gameweek 12.

Although this defeat marked yet another disappointing domestic result for United, particularly for those managers in ownership of defensive assets such as Harry Maguire (£5.4m) or Wan-Bissaka, the likes of Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Anthony Martial (£7.6m) and James did look lively in the early stages of the lunchtime kick-off.

The promise shown in the first half of Saturday’s game amounted to little, though, with Solskjaer saying afterwards:

I thought the front four looked promising but flattered to deceive a little bit today. It looked like we could create chances but we just didn’t have the last pass or the last finish and that’s something we need to improve on.

We had a lack of quality at times in front of goal. I thought we started well and opened them up with Dan James down the side, but we couldn’t get the important first goal. Then after 15 or 20 minutes, the game settled down and I thought they grew into it. It became a 50/50 match and you thought whoever would get the first goal would win this.

With the club having lost four of their first 11 league fixtures for the first time since 1990, United’s recent resurgence has been placed in some perspective.

Question marks will be asked by Fantasy managers of a team displaying such inconsistency, despite the flickers of hope that Rashford, Martial and James are displaying and the relative cut-price appeal of that trio.

With fixtures on the horizon including Brighton, Sheffield United and Aston Villa, who are exhibiting some strong defensive form in the current campaign (the Seagulls and the Blades are in the top three for clean sheets in 2019/20), keeping the faith in United’s attacking assets will be a difficult task for us FPL managers.

The value that James continues to offer at £6.1m cannot be ignored – ranking as United’s third-most-valuable player for form in the 2019/20 campaign behind just Scott McTominay (£5.1m) and De Gea.

This was a fixture that served as a timely reminder for managers that although United had been on a respectable run of results, they are hard to trust as Fantasy assets.

Defensive inconsistency coupled with a lack of reliable goalscoring options means that the Red Devils remain a lukewarm prospect, with yet another defeat perhaps being the straw to break the camel’s back for those managers still in ownership of United’s defensive options.

Those of us looking to bring United’s attacking assets in ahead of the next three “winnable” fixtures will also have a few concerns after this weekend.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Smith, S. Cook, Ake, Rico, H. Wilson (L. Cook 86′), Lerma, Billing, Fraser; C. Wilson, King.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka(Williams 80′), Maguire, Lindelof, Young; McTominay, Fred; Pereira (Lingard 68′), James (Greenwood 80′), Rashford; Martial.

Looking for Leichester midfield, Tielemans or Maddison is your pick? Stats are similar...share your thought

I own Maddy, but if I could pick again I’d go for Tielemans for sure.

Unfortunately the difference is not worth a transfer though

I’m in the same boat and have almost exactly same £ in the bank.

You could do KDB > Mané as well if you’d prefer to have the more explosive Sterling.

Thoughts on the next move here..
    1. Salah -> Mane. ( A little sideways but Salah looks not close to 100%).
    2. Sterling-> Martial(Tielemans) Frees up about 5.2m. Can get TAA after as well as upgrade either Cantwell/ Wickham.
    3. Relax. Wait a GW to decide. Think about Sterling-> Mane or other moves.
    4. Other moves. Maybe just WC to hone in on Liv + mix things up.

    Pope.
    Robbo, A Smith, Lundstram, Janmaat.
    Mount, Sterling, KDB, Salah.
    Abraham, Vardy.
    Button, Cantwell, Soyuncu, Wickham.
1ft. 0.8m ITB. WC in hand so can take a gamble or 2.

Worth keeping I think. Chelsea DF stats are fairly good, they just keep losing concentration in the dying embers of their games.

But, I think they will sort out the problem. And 4.7 is a bargain for a playing Chelsea DF

FPL is a dynamic game. The premium knee-jerking might continue all season

Fun fact: the 10M+ guys are in a range of 21 points at the moment, and have switched positions within this range (and some shorter ranges) all season. Zombie teams cruising...

The true variance has been in 9.5M and below

        Yup.

Before the game week everyone was getting rid of Aguero and getting in Sterling. Now after Sterling blanked and Aguero scored it's the other way around.

It was just one game jeez

Maybe people considering doubling up on Salah/ Mane for their fixture run or people see his 4 yellows and don't like the idea that he would be guaranteed to miss a game.

Selling also frees up a good amount of cash which can be used for those all important upgrades elsewhere.

Need to make a decision on him myself in fairness.

Salah hasn't looked any better than Sterling and going with Salah and Mane limits you to just one Pool defender.

How does this WC team look?

    Pope Mcgovern
    TAA Robertson Chilwell Lundstram Rico
    Mane KDB Martial Mount Dendoncker
    Abraham Vardy Jimenez

Alternative is to downgrade Jimenez and Robertson and get Son in for Dendoncker.

Pope might go for Gazzaniga but depends on how Spurs perform today and in midweek defensively.

Looks good. Keep both TAA and Robbo.

Like how this is a WC and its similar to my team :). I wildcarded 2 weeks ago tbf, love it tbf. Hendo over pope though

Yeah Henderson is also an option, the only reason he isn’t in my current draft is because I don’t normally like defensive double ups other than Liverpool full-backs because of their attacking potential.

Since everyone already has Lundstram, it might still make sense to capitalise on Sheffield Utd’s strong defensive performance with a 2nd defensive asset though.

Team is great but the problem is that given your strong defensive core (Trent, Chilwell, Robertson), you will have to bench Lundstram almost every week, and we have seen yesterday how that can hurt

This tbf. Lund should be playing every week from 14-19

I never said they were. I said ideal replacement “for me”. Thinking of dropping Otamendi to Saiss or Willems this week which leaves me the funds for the upgrade.

Am considering getting a Leicester mid as an 8th attacker next week. Might be a decent approach to the Liverpool blank GW without burning transfers selling Mané. His price might be quite high by then too.

I do! But bit of a waste, no? Should be quite easy to bench 2 even 3 Liverpool players.

Other than Maddison, their mids are below 7m but I guess you could argue the same thing about +6m.

      2. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

Just in the short term :). Plus we have an excess of funds at the minute, I’d say.

Perez or Barnes would be 6m and it would mean you’re less at threat from rotation elsewhere.

I don’t know. Maybe I should mortgage the house and get Son in, but my bench would include Greenwood.

Which of these combos would you choose from Liverpool for their fixture run?

    1. Just 1 from TAA or Robbo + Salah + Mane. (No Sterling).
    2. TAA + Robbo + just 1 from Salah or Mane. (Sterling as an option).

Yes there is. One round of fixtures will be played over 2 weeks.
5 games one week, 5 games following week. Means teams will have two week break.

Yes, in February. Half the teams will play in one GW with the other half playing the next GW. Gives each team a 2 week break in February. The split is still to be confirmed.

Not as simple as that I think.

Kane is actually a great creator of chances these days. And generally, Spurs will suffer without him

Not much love on last page. I may try again...

    A) Sterling > Mané
    B) KDB > Mané

If I do A) then it will fund Maddy > Son or Tomori/Soy > Robertson at a later date.

    1. Van der Faart
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I would do A as KDB is less likely to see rotation than Sterling, in my opinion.

I’m leaning that way too. Sterling looks a bit ‘off’ at the moment. And the £ spent elsewhere might help push me up the rankings...

Go cheap (Connolly) and change to a 3-5-2 with Connolly as your 8th attacker.

There’s so much choice in MF right now and you’ll have a bunch of cash to spend to get Mane/Salah/Son/KDB etc...
