Belated joy for Aguero owners but Pep and City continue to frustrate

Manchester City 2-1 Southampton

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), Kyle Walker (£5.9m) | James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Walker, Angelino (£4.7m) | Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Walker x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Angelino x 1

Manchester City left it late to secure all three points against Southampton at the Etihad, with the Citizens’ premium assets delivering mixed fortunes yet again for Fantasy managers who had backed them to haul big against Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

The most captained player of Gameweek 11, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), failed to register any attacking returns, with his owners’ misery compounded when the England winger registered his first “one-pointer” of the campaign after picking up a yellow card late in the first half.

Sterling’s midfield counterpart, Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), was also unable to deliver against the Saints, with the Belgian blanking for the second time in his last three outings.

In truth, neither player looked like scoring, with the Belgian’s 79th-minute effort from an indirect free-kick inside the Southampton box about as close as either player came to finding the back of the net.

Yet whilst Sterling and De Bruyne’s returns were a source of disappointment for their owners, a goal for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) will have understandably provided belated joy to the Argentinian’s remaining backers – his ninth of the season and a first in the league since the 8-0 demolition of Watford in Gameweek 6.

Although Guardiola had opted to rotate Aguero at the expense of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) in Gameweeks 9 and 10, with the Brazilian forward making his first consecutive league starts for the first time since December 2018, the Spaniard opted to return the £12.1m striker to the starting XI.

Aguero’s equalising goal was just-rewards for those who had maintained faith in the striker, although there remain real concerns over his risk of rotation and this may well have been his swansong in many FPL squads with some unfavourable fixtures ahead.

The City boss spoke after the game regarding his half-time team talk and the response from his squad that delighted him:

I told them at half-time to keep going for it, to keep attacking. It is the only way. There was no space, it was almost impossible but we did it and that is why I am delighted.

City’s defensive selections continue to perplex Fantasy managers, with Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) – who were both rested in the EFL Cup in midweek – only among the substitutes for this rematch against the Saints.

Guardiola instead opted to select Angelino (£4.7m), John Stones (£5.3m), Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) on Saturday, with Walker stealing the show at the Etihad with a goal, an assist and three bonus points: his first double-digit haul of the 2019/20 campaign

Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m) did not feature in the starting XI and, much to the frustration of the Argentinian’s 5% of owners, Guardiola opted to bring on the centre-back in injury time for a one-minute cameo – a particularly disappointing situation for those managers who may have had the likes of 21-point hero John Lundstram (£4.7m) on their benches.

City were not at their best against Southampton, who frustrated Pep Guardiola’s side throughout the fixture and went ahead when James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m) found the back of the net after 12 minutes – Ederson (£6.1m) spilling a shot from Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) at the midfielder’s feet.

After being humbled in a 9-0 defeat against Leicester City in Gameweek 10, two games against City in a week – in the Carabao Cup and the Premier League – would have seemed a daunting prospect for the south coast side.

Hasenhüttl spoke after the game regarding his side’s task in visiting the Etihad twice in just a week, saying:

To come here twice after losing 9-0 is not the easiest moment for a team but I think it was a chance to show up today, and we did, and it was really a pity that we didn’t get something for the amazing work we did today.

Although neither of the games resulted in a victory for Southampton, their performances, particularly in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat, can be seen as a source of credit to Hasenhüttl and his staff.

Some favourable fixtures await the Saints between now and Gameweek 18 but many of us are likely going to need to see a lot more improvement before their assets re-enter the Fantasy radar.

Southampton XI (4-5-1): McCarthy, Valery (Danso 75′), Bednarek (Adams 88′), Stephens, Vestergaard, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Armstrong, Ings (Djenepo 84′), Redmond.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Angelino, Gundogan, Silva (Jesus 45′), De Bruyne, Bernardo (Foden 84′) Sterling, Aguero (Otamendi 90+2′).

    Pope / Button
    TAA / Maguire / Aurier / Lunds / Soyunco
    KDB / Sterling / Mount / Yarmolenko / Cantwell
    Tammy / Vardy / Maupay

Have 1 FT and 3m ITB. Thinking about bringing in Pulisic for Yarmolenko. Any other suggestion? Please help!

I have Pope and Gazzaniga, and using one of my 2FT to downgrade one to free up cash. Originally planned on keeping Pope but now thinking of downgrading him to a 4.0 to save another 0.6m. Sound like a plan? Means playing Gazzaniga every week though.

Poor Andre Gomes, what an unfortunate accident, wishing him a full and speedy recovery. I know the feeling, I have had my tibia and fibula snapped when a goalie rushed out and took me out. One takes walking and general mobility for granted. Gutted for Son too, love the guy and he obviously did not intend to break Gomes' ankle. Stay strong Sonny.

Really not liking the Liverpool double up in defence because of the fixture especially with Soy and Lund on the bench, but I'd always play TAA. Tough one. Hard to justify benching Robbo really in any fixture as well.

      1. Pranav Santhosh
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 5 months ago

Yeah this week will just be hoping I don’t tank too hard only have 4 players out of 15 not playing big 6 sides. Double defence against city is never good but my saving grace atm is that Soyuncu and Lundstram have big 6 sides as well. Part of the reason I’ve set up like this is id be less pissed if my sub 5.0 defender hauls off the bench compared to my premium defender asset

Nice looking team. Id be slightly worried with Lund on bench after seeing what he’s capable of. Don’t know if I’d play Rico over him . Strong team with great bench options. Vardy captain ?

      1. Pranav Santhosh
        • 7 Years

Yeah Rico is more a fixtures based selection with how toothless Newcastle look up front but Soyuncu showed what he is capable of this week but more importantly Lundstram showed what he’s capable of all season long. Currently on martial captain which is a pure bias pick as a united fan. Vardy against a poor arsenal defence is probably the best option but I personally don’t like captaining players against the big 6 even though the arsenal defence is probably bottom 6 quality. If I go head over heart I’ll be captain Tammy but I expect my heart to win out and I’ll captain martial hoping united do the business

I suck at picking captains, Vardy will be the most popular.

Barring injury midweek, anything worthy of a FT?

    Pope
    Lundstram Tomori Soyuncu
    Mane KDB Sterling Mount
    Vardy Abraham Maupay

    (Button, Cantwell Rico Hanley)
    1FT 3.4ITB

Maybe swap Pope as Burnley are not keeping clean sheets but nothing drastic needed if you want to keep 2FT for the international break.

90% of my rivals in mini leagues have Sterling and Mane and im chasing 50 pts im thinking of Sterling to Salah with one ft and roll other. Good idea or jus go like others and sell Aguero, Dendoker for Mane and Greenwood

    2ft 0.3m itb

    Pope
    Taa, Soyuncu, Rico, Lundstram
    Sterling, Kdb, Mount
    Afuero, Abraham, Vardy

I have got rid of Sterling this week and the funds spread around makes a very good squad. Was going to go for Salah but his injury seems to be hampering him.

Pick 3 from this 5 please:

    A)TAA home to Man City
    B) Robbo home to Man City
    C) Lundstram away to Spurs
    D) Soy home to Arsenal
    E) Rico away to Newcastle

    Currently on A,B and E

Will WC next week, have 2FTs. Who are the two must haves for gw 12? Open to sell Both Aguero & Sterling (Have KDB too) and have 1.2 itb. So, can literally afford any 2 players in the game.

Most likely Vardy and Tammy will be there. I already own them.

        My team

        Roberto
        Rico, Soy, Montoya, Diop, Tomori
        KDB, Sterling, Mount, Martial, Saka

Aww man, please, do yourself a favour, i can’t believe how people think he’s gonna ‘explode’ week in week out, he’s dripped measly returns, at an absolute premium price, and that was over an easy stretch of games.l which is pathetic. Now 6 straight games of slog.
Entirely your choice bud, i’m just trying to save some heartache and tell you from my experience with him. He’s gonna let a lot of people down even more.

    Digne and Cantwell to

0.1 short of Mount, but hoping I might gain that this week with price rises.
    -4 and I don't have Vardy

    Current team. 2 FT

    Pope Heaton

    Kelly VVD Ota Dunk Lundstram
    Sterling KDB Maddison Mount Cantwell
    Auba Vardy Tammy

On the surface I thought 2 FT could fix this team but decided to WC.

    1. Pope and Heaton are in teams with terrible defensive form.
    2. VVD Ota Cantwell will lose TV this week. Kelly is now a non player.
    3. Mount Maddison have declining influence in games, though still good enough to hold.
    4. Fixtures turn negative for City and positive for Pool, so will transition to 3xPool
    5. Auba cannot justify his 11m tag.

Was I too hasty to trigger WC?

cause i think it´s final because of VAR (personally i think it should be rescinded) is there to correct the decision and they let it stood so not sure they have any case legally

Nah man you gotta feel bad for him.. . It was not his intention to commit the foul and the injury made him feel really bad as you could see in his reaction

    5. bench boost for every gamew…
      • 7 Years

knowing context and distinguishing between the actual foul and the result of it seems to be missing here

Gomez elbowing Son just before, not sure how VAR was not consulted as that was a brutal elbow, not intended by Gomez i think but Son felt angry both for not getting free kick and maybe thought it was deliberate. Then he slides into a tackle in which usually just ends with the offended player being hauled to the ground and gets some bruises but unluckily he collided with Aurier resulting in a unanticipated injury. (awful to watch admittedly) that Son most likely could not have foreseen. No excuse for Son for his unmature reaction to the initial elbow but to label it crocodile tears is just plain stupidity.
