Belated joy for Aguero owners but Pep and City continue to frustrate

Manchester City 2-1 Southampton

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), Kyle Walker (£5.9m) | James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Walker, Angelino (£4.7m) | Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Walker x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Angelino x 1

Manchester City left it late to secure all three points against Southampton at the Etihad, with the Citizens’ premium assets delivering mixed fortunes yet again for Fantasy managers who had backed them to haul big against Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

The most captained player of Gameweek 11, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), failed to register any attacking returns, with his owners’ misery compounded when the England winger registered his first “one-pointer” of the campaign after picking up a yellow card late in the first half.

Sterling’s midfield counterpart, Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), was also unable to deliver against the Saints, with the Belgian blanking for the second time in his last three outings.

In truth, neither player looked like scoring, with the Belgian’s 79th-minute effort from an indirect free-kick inside the Southampton box about as close as either player came to finding the back of the net.

Yet whilst Sterling and De Bruyne’s returns were a source of disappointment for their owners, a goal for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) will have understandably provided belated joy to the Argentinian’s remaining backers – his ninth of the season and a first in the league since the 8-0 demolition of Watford in Gameweek 6.

Although Guardiola had opted to rotate Aguero at the expense of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) in Gameweeks 9 and 10, with the Brazilian forward making his first consecutive league starts for the first time since December 2018, the Spaniard opted to return the £12.1m striker to the starting XI.

Aguero’s equalising goal was just-rewards for those who had maintained faith in the striker, although there remain real concerns over his risk of rotation and this may well have been his swansong in many FPL squads with some unfavourable fixtures ahead.

The City boss spoke after the game regarding his half-time team talk and the response from his squad that delighted him:

I told them at half-time to keep going for it, to keep attacking. It is the only way. There was no space, it was almost impossible but we did it and that is why I am delighted.

City’s defensive selections continue to perplex Fantasy managers, with Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) – who were both rested in the EFL Cup in midweek – only among the substitutes for this rematch against the Saints.

Guardiola instead opted to select Angelino (£4.7m), John Stones (£5.3m), Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) on Saturday, with Walker stealing the show at the Etihad with a goal, an assist and three bonus points: his first double-digit haul of the 2019/20 campaign

Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m) did not feature in the starting XI and, much to the frustration of the Argentinian’s 5% of owners, Guardiola opted to bring on the centre-back in injury time for a one-minute cameo – a particularly disappointing situation for those managers who may have had the likes of 21-point hero John Lundstram (£4.7m) on their benches.

City were not at their best against Southampton, who frustrated Pep Guardiola’s side throughout the fixture and went ahead when James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m) found the back of the net after 12 minutes – Ederson (£6.1m) spilling a shot from Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) at the midfielder’s feet.

After being humbled in a 9-0 defeat against Leicester City in Gameweek 10, two games against City in a week – in the Carabao Cup and the Premier League – would have seemed a daunting prospect for the south coast side.

Hasenhüttl spoke after the game regarding his side’s task in visiting the Etihad twice in just a week, saying:

To come here twice after losing 9-0 is not the easiest moment for a team but I think it was a chance to show up today, and we did, and it was really a pity that we didn’t get something for the amazing work we did today.

Although neither of the games resulted in a victory for Southampton, their performances, particularly in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat, can be seen as a source of credit to Hasenhüttl and his staff.

Some favourable fixtures await the Saints between now and Gameweek 18 but many of us are likely going to need to see a lot more improvement before their assets re-enter the Fantasy radar.

Southampton XI (4-5-1): McCarthy, Valery (Danso 75′), Bednarek (Adams 88′), Stephens, Vestergaard, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Armstrong, Ings (Djenepo 84′), Redmond.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Angelino, Gundogan, Silva (Jesus 45′), De Bruyne, Bernardo (Foden 84′) Sterling, Aguero (Otamendi 90+2′).

Had such a good week. 90 points, 98k GW rank, and I moved up from 1.9m to 830k. I'm still surprised that this is what one good week can do to you.

Any changes you'd make for the future though? 1 FT and 0.8 in the bank. Heaton, Mings, Cantwell, and Wickham on the bench.

Maybe I'll just bank it and have 2 FTs over the intl break. I was considering Sterling + Wickham -> one of the Silvas + Firmino. Thoughts?

I had four options, Ota & CHO to

      1. 3.9 & Martial
      2. Robertson & Donkey
      3. 3.9 + Maddison
      4. 4.5 defender + Tielemans

      1. He's oop but I just can't trust utd, and those next few fixtures aren't as straightforward as they seem.
      2. Even with Alisson back they aren't that solid at the back, I'd rather go with the Salah Mane TAA combo, hopefuly Mo is fit.

I chose 4 over 3 for the extra flexibility and looking at the stats Maddison does in no way justify the extra 0.8 mil over Tielemans.

I did those transfers now to avoid a -0.2 (or possibly more) swing in prices but if that wasn't an issue I would have liked to have kept CHO because I think after his rest he has a decent chance of starting this GW with a good fixture. I would hold for this week then get rid.

Thoughts on the next move here.

    1. Salah -> Mane. ( A little sideways but Salah looks not close to 100%).
    2. Sterling-> Martial(Tielemans) Frees up about 5.2m. Can get TAA after as well as upgrade either Cantwell/ Wickham later.
    3. Relax. Wait a GW to decide.
Think about Sterling -> Mane or other moves next GW.

    Mount, Sterling, KDB, Salah.
    Abraham, Vardy.

Of the 9 goals scored by Newcastle

1 is scored by a striker

6 are scored by defenders, 5 of which are by centrebacks.

Son was my differential next week and now he is my problem. Even good weeks is ruined when you are in a rot. Everything you do tend to go wrong and transfer mistakes after another, differentials like Emerson/Boly/Son gets injured or suspended just ahead of a nice run of fixture. I will lose money on Son now and i´m so annoyed that i think i just play Lundstram away to Spurs instead of replacing Son. Probably a lot will bench him this week and now people have got rid of like of Ota so no bench coming in now means no cs and red card for Lundstram.

I think they have fair chances of keeping a clean sheet against Spurs. So even if I had Son, I would have played Lundy over him.

Spurs have tough away game in belgrade and very often plays below par after CL so not the end of world no, and SHu set up for 0-0 and are good at it. Spurs without Son and Eriksen totally lost could be in for trouble in trying to unlock them. Lamela out also means a more depleted team as most of their players must play both games. With Aurier also in my team a jubilee 0-0 would be delightful but knowing my luck it won´t be

Leicester are looking solid, had Vardy and Soyuncu for a while now .... worth a triple up ? I am not sure any more than those two is necessary ?

      Hey mate 🙂
I'm also thinking about same. If Perez was nailed he'd have been a no brainer, but sadly Gray is on his heels all the time.
Don't rate Maddison/Tielemans too much (compared to others in that price bracket)
So, I'm happy with my double up atm

Certainly not necessary but Tielemans/Maddison are on form

I think its a no brainer, especially whilst they are in form and have a great run. Leicester are more likely to be a top 4 team than any of Arsenal, Man Utd, Spurs this season imo

I just added Tielemans for the triple up with the two you have. Great form great value, and the team are flying at the mo, with a sea of green fixtures extending as far as the eye can see.

No David Silva vs Liverpool, hm, how will that play out for them? Foden suspended in CL also means he has to play most of his best players there too. I think Pep would want to play Bilva as one of the front three vs Liverpool because he is much better defensively than mahrez, and he can´t put Dinho up in midfield as that will mean Otamendi in.

They're fairly assured of topping that group. Can afford to rest a few for Atalanta to have a good 11 against Liverpool.

    --Stekel--Lund--Rico--Dilva.

Finally had a good week, but unsure what to do now

    Pope Heaton
    Digne Robbo Pereira Lundstram Cathcart
    Mane KDB Martial Cantwell Dendoncker
    Auba Tammy Maupay

Maupay was meant to be a 2 week punt, 2 weeks ago.
Auba isn't as appealing now (and gives spare money for upgrades)
    Cantwell needs to be upgraded
Lose Digne? (for Rico and use money for upgrades)

    What is the most urgent?

Rico is second on my bench but he could be first by the week's end, Bourn have started keeping clean sheets and Newcastle are fairly toothless. Probably a toin coss between all three. Why did I just transfer in another starting defender to replace Ota again?

Until England has qualified officials at top level, VAR is going to be an utter farce in the Premier League. Refusing to check the in-stadium screen, cowardice in overturning the Video Assistant's decision, vague interpretation of basic rules of football.
VAR everywhere else is working very well, in the Bundesliga, the World Cup, even the bloody MLS. The tech is the same, so what's the biggest difference? Perhaps the people using it.
VAR needs to go until these inept officials are properly trained in VAR, because clearly they aren't. Instead of being clarifying, its become infuriating. Managers lose jobs and trophies are lost by small decisions that add up.
