Scout Notes

Belated joy for Aguero owners but Pep and City continue to frustrate

Manchester City 2-1 Southampton

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), Kyle Walker (£5.9m) | James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Walker, Angelino (£4.7m) | Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Walker x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Angelino x 1

Manchester City left it late to secure all three points against Southampton at the Etihad, with the Citizens’ premium assets delivering mixed fortunes yet again for Fantasy managers who had backed them to haul big against Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

The most captained player of Gameweek 11, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), failed to register any attacking returns, with his owners’ misery compounded when the England winger registered his first “one-pointer” of the campaign after picking up a yellow card late in the first half.

Sterling’s midfield counterpart, Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), was also unable to deliver against the Saints, with the Belgian blanking for the second time in his last three outings.

In truth, neither player looked like scoring, with the Belgian’s 79th-minute effort from an indirect free-kick inside the Southampton box about as close as either player came to finding the back of the net.

Yet whilst Sterling and De Bruyne’s returns were a source of disappointment for their owners, a goal for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) will have understandably provided belated joy to the Argentinian’s remaining backers – his ninth of the season and a first in the league since the 8-0 demolition of Watford in Gameweek 6.

Although Guardiola had opted to rotate Aguero at the expense of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) in Gameweeks 9 and 10, with the Brazilian forward making his first consecutive league starts for the first time since December 2018, the Spaniard opted to return the £12.1m striker to the starting XI.

Aguero’s equalising goal was just-rewards for those who had maintained faith in the striker, although there remain real concerns over his risk of rotation and this may well have been his swansong in many FPL squads with some unfavourable fixtures ahead.

The City boss spoke after the game regarding his half-time team talk and the response from his squad that delighted him:

I told them at half-time to keep going for it, to keep attacking. It is the only way. There was no space, it was almost impossible but we did it and that is why I am delighted.

City’s defensive selections continue to perplex Fantasy managers, with Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) – who were both rested in the EFL Cup in midweek – only among the substitutes for this rematch against the Saints.

Guardiola instead opted to select Angelino (£4.7m), John Stones (£5.3m), Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) on Saturday, with Walker stealing the show at the Etihad with a goal, an assist and three bonus points: his first double-digit haul of the 2019/20 campaign

Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m) did not feature in the starting XI and, much to the frustration of the Argentinian’s 5% of owners, Guardiola opted to bring on the centre-back in injury time for a one-minute cameo – a particularly disappointing situation for those managers who may have had the likes of 21-point hero John Lundstram (£4.7m) on their benches.

City were not at their best against Southampton, who frustrated Pep Guardiola’s side throughout the fixture and went ahead when James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m) found the back of the net after 12 minutes – Ederson (£6.1m) spilling a shot from Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) at the midfielder’s feet.

After being humbled in a 9-0 defeat against Leicester City in Gameweek 10, two games against City in a week – in the Carabao Cup and the Premier League – would have seemed a daunting prospect for the south coast side.

Hasenhüttl spoke after the game regarding his side’s task in visiting the Etihad twice in just a week, saying:

To come here twice after losing 9-0 is not the easiest moment for a team but I think it was a chance to show up today, and we did, and it was really a pity that we didn’t get something for the amazing work we did today.

Although neither of the games resulted in a victory for Southampton, their performances, particularly in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat, can be seen as a source of credit to Hasenhüttl and his staff.

Some favourable fixtures await the Saints between now and Gameweek 18 but many of us are likely going to need to see a lot more improvement before their assets re-enter the Fantasy radar.

Southampton XI (4-5-1): McCarthy, Valery (Danso 75′), Bednarek (Adams 88′), Stephens, Vestergaard, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Armstrong, Ings (Djenepo 84′), Redmond.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Angelino, Gundogan, Silva (Jesus 45′), De Bruyne, Bernardo (Foden 84′) Sterling, Aguero (Otamendi 90+2′).

Vardy will no longer be a differential as he'll rise 35 to 40% in ownership soon

Its the leicester mids like Tielemans and Maddison that will give you an advantage.Agree?

Yeah if anyone is looking to climb ranks just with Vardy that won't be possible now. Have to double up with one of that attackers to take advantage of Leicester's fixtures.

i mean Vardy + One of Tielemens or Maddison

Wouldnt advise to go without Vardy. Just find a way to get him in given leicester fixtures and his form

Madisson might. Tielemans won't just yet. Nice total but 8 blanks. Madisson more consistent.

Tielemens produced seperate returns in 8 of 9 pl matches between gw28 and gw36 last season.

Thats some level of considtency for a guy in his first pl season. Reckon He'll get even better this season

This season he most of his blanks were against difficult fixtures. Against easier opportion he'll roam more forward

when players are so disappointing (stopped a lot of lundstrams and soys coming on) they get shipped out in abundance.. feel like its hard for the price prediction sites to keep up with the sales sometimes (not the first time it happened)

last few games tactics encouraged leicester going forward on the left side..
      1. southhampton concede more chances down their right (weak link) leicester focused on that

      2. palace play on the counter and use zaha on the left so perieras side.. so it wouldve played into palace's hands if he was to push forward

      that said.. would be concerned

Start 1 out of these 3:

    A) Lundy (tot)
    B) Rico (new)
    C) Soyuncu (ARS)

I don't think Frank will rotate them for two big games. He will see an Ajax win as almost ensuring going through if they can beat Lille at home. Similarly Palace at home a must win before they get into a run of dodgy away fixtures before Xmas, and no Jorgi. CHO form a bit rocky, so expect, if fit, Pulisic to start both games. Can still wait and see in case Pulisic injured, say. I am CHO owner and thinking I may sell this week depending on events

    Thoughts on what next here.

    1. Salah -> Mane. ( A little sideways but Salah looks not close to 100%).
    2. Sterling-> Martial(Tielemans) Frees up about 5.2m. Can get TAA after as well as upgrade either Cantwell/ Wickham later.
    3. Relax. Wait a GW to decide.
Think about Sterling -> Mane or other moves next GW.

    Pope.
    Robbo, A Smith, Lundstram, Janmaat.
    Mount, Sterling, KDB, Salah.
    Abraham, Vardy.
    Button, Cantwell, Soyuncu, Wickham.
1ft. 0.8m ITB. WC in hand.

keep salah.. fixtures turn amazing soon

i have a similar team and did sterling->mane.. very happy about that.

also consider that salah just dropped in price.. with the coming fixtures i can see him regaining some value.. with sterling he'll probably drop .1 this week and continue to drop in value (considering the tougher fixtures).. also christmas will see pep go extra hard with rotation and its bad enough already

Really want Vardy for next week but the only way to get him is to take a -8 as already ditched Pukki for Abraham.
Wilson to Vardy and VVD to Rico Leaves me with

    Pope (Heaton)
    Soyu TAA Lundy (Rico Aarons)
    KDB Salah Mount Tielmans (Dendo)
    Jimi Vardy Abraham

Its madness to do -8 right?

The other option is to hit the WC button a week early as had planned to do it during the IB. Keepers need an overhaul too.

I would love to know from all the bloggers on this site, how good points weeks and bad points weeks affect viewership. This site is probably the most insightful of them all.

        This haha.
I used to be such a patzer before this site. Imagine captaining Veretout and buying Steven Davis. Captaining Jay Rodriguez vs Spurs when he was at Saints instead of Harry Kane. I mean, I'm still s***, but I take it a little more seriously now.

SV a little low considering TV.
I usually have 107+ around the new year that gives me an additional big hitter. To be honest the tactic has never really worked. I remember my mini league opponent having King a couple of years ago and I changed him for a big hitter when fixtures started to turn. Must have cost me 50 points!

Anyone looking at McGinn? He is a fantastic player, that left foot can score against any team. Should have had points against City and he provided an assist against Pool..

    Who would you go for?

    1) McGinn
    2) Pulisic
    3) Tielemans (have Maddison)

I have seen Djenepo, watched the Saints games early in the season.. Scored a few and looks like a quick skillfull player. The issue is the team as a whole, I am not sure how they will do against lesser teams, will they play more offensively? or play 5 at the back like the 2 City games? I am not yet convinced but Djenepo as a player, I like a lot before his injury..

My hunch is that city will win next week against pool. Mane will be marked out of the game and will drop in price, or wont rise significantly as ppl will be wc over the break.

Long winded way to say im confused. Sterling can still explode and I would captain him over mane. If I get mane it restricts my captain options.

It does in a sense because having Sterling allows you to get double Pool defence while Salah doesn't. (Yes I assume that everyone chooses Mane over those two)
