Belated joy for Aguero owners but Pep and City continue to frustrate

Manchester City 2-1 Southampton

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), Kyle Walker (£5.9m) | James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Walker, Angelino (£4.7m) | Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Walker x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Angelino x 1

Manchester City left it late to secure all three points against Southampton at the Etihad, with the Citizens’ premium assets delivering mixed fortunes yet again for Fantasy managers who had backed them to haul big against Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

The most captained player of Gameweek 11, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), failed to register any attacking returns, with his owners’ misery compounded when the England winger registered his first “one-pointer” of the campaign after picking up a yellow card late in the first half.

Sterling’s midfield counterpart, Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), was also unable to deliver against the Saints, with the Belgian blanking for the second time in his last three outings.

In truth, neither player looked like scoring, with the Belgian’s 79th-minute effort from an indirect free-kick inside the Southampton box about as close as either player came to finding the back of the net.

Yet whilst Sterling and De Bruyne’s returns were a source of disappointment for their owners, a goal for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) will have understandably provided belated joy to the Argentinian’s remaining backers – his ninth of the season and a first in the league since the 8-0 demolition of Watford in Gameweek 6.

Although Guardiola had opted to rotate Aguero at the expense of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) in Gameweeks 9 and 10, with the Brazilian forward making his first consecutive league starts for the first time since December 2018, the Spaniard opted to return the £12.1m striker to the starting XI.

Aguero’s equalising goal was just-rewards for those who had maintained faith in the striker, although there remain real concerns over his risk of rotation and this may well have been his swansong in many FPL squads with some unfavourable fixtures ahead.

The City boss spoke after the game regarding his half-time team talk and the response from his squad that delighted him:

I told them at half-time to keep going for it, to keep attacking. It is the only way. There was no space, it was almost impossible but we did it and that is why I am delighted.

City’s defensive selections continue to perplex Fantasy managers, with Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) – who were both rested in the EFL Cup in midweek – only among the substitutes for this rematch against the Saints.

Guardiola instead opted to select Angelino (£4.7m), John Stones (£5.3m), Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) on Saturday, with Walker stealing the show at the Etihad with a goal, an assist and three bonus points: his first double-digit haul of the 2019/20 campaign

Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m) did not feature in the starting XI and, much to the frustration of the Argentinian’s 5% of owners, Guardiola opted to bring on the centre-back in injury time for a one-minute cameo – a particularly disappointing situation for those managers who may have had the likes of 21-point hero John Lundstram (£4.7m) on their benches.

City were not at their best against Southampton, who frustrated Pep Guardiola’s side throughout the fixture and went ahead when James Ward-Prowse (£5.8m) found the back of the net after 12 minutes – Ederson (£6.1m) spilling a shot from Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) at the midfielder’s feet.

After being humbled in a 9-0 defeat against Leicester City in Gameweek 10, two games against City in a week – in the Carabao Cup and the Premier League – would have seemed a daunting prospect for the south coast side.

Hasenhüttl spoke after the game regarding his side’s task in visiting the Etihad twice in just a week, saying:

To come here twice after losing 9-0 is not the easiest moment for a team but I think it was a chance to show up today, and we did, and it was really a pity that we didn’t get something for the amazing work we did today.

Although neither of the games resulted in a victory for Southampton, their performances, particularly in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat, can be seen as a source of credit to Hasenhüttl and his staff.

Some favourable fixtures await the Saints between now and Gameweek 18 but many of us are likely going to need to see a lot more improvement before their assets re-enter the Fantasy radar.

Southampton XI (4-5-1): McCarthy, Valery (Danso 75′), Bednarek (Adams 88′), Stephens, Vestergaard, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Armstrong, Ings (Djenepo 84′), Redmond.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Angelino, Gundogan, Silva (Jesus 45′), De Bruyne, Bernardo (Foden 84′) Sterling, Aguero (Otamendi 90+2′).

I think Emery will be sacked after Leicester if Arsenal lose embarrassingly.

nah, he'll get to end of the season to either get top 4 or win europa. Will get sacked when we don't achieve either of those.

Seems a bit risky to leave Champions League to him, when it could seriously affect their spending power in the summer.

For Arsenal to sack him the following must happen:
        They have a replacement.
        The manger must be awful.
The manager must have been there at least 20 years. (smile)

I hope he stays, just for the amusing pressers where I need a translator. Believe me, Arsenal are struggling due to head office more than the coach.

Zaka wears his heart on his sleeve. He makes major cockups. But I admire him in many ways. Just the dressing room vote shows he is popular as a captain and the likes of Ozil should take a leaf from his book.

The man talks a good talk. I can see what he is trying to do, but he makes strange decisions. If he just fudging put torreria as a dm and play

      Leno
      Chambers/bellerin holding sok Tierney
      Chambers/guendouzi torreria
      Ozil
      Pepe, laca, auba

If it still didnt work after a few.games then fair dues but he is sabotaging himself

How do you predict Clean sheets?

Arguably, the hardest thing to predict in FPL is when a team is going to keep a clean sheet. I've benched six clean sheets over the last three gameweeks, including Soyuncu this weekend.

Normally my methodology while choosing between defensive assets is
    1. Clean sheet odds
    2. xGC table
    3. RMT tool rating

Naturally this does not apply as much to premium assets with attacking threat such as TAA and Robertson as you play them every week. The same might now apply for Lundstram with his attacking OOP potential.

But when it comes to assets such as Rico, Tomori and Soyuncu what factors influence your decision making?

1 and 2 from what u suggested.. and history with opposition.
so sour for leicester def owner rewarded playing them against palace.. not too much suggests a clean sheet

Eh, if you looked at it there was a decent chance. A lot of Crystal Palace's joy against Leicester under Puel came to do with the extremely slow centrebacks he played in a high line. Soyuncu's addition has seen Leicester much less susceptible to counterattacks this season.

With historical records, context much be considered

Well, first you buy players fro defensively good teams, and then you look at how bad their opposition are at attacking, and extrapolate from that. Doesn't hurt too much.

I was going to get Chilwell instead of Soy but when looking at Soy play, guy does not look like he can set a foot wrong. He may be slightly limited but think I have been to harsh on him.

Also saved me 0.9 going Soy instead and did not have to take a hit. Did Soy for Aurier.

Yeah, even rotation of GK's does not work out all the time.

After my next 3 moves will probably see me leave my team for the forseeable future. I will have a very strong bench to depend on and plan no more hits. Going to help my rank going forward.

Just gut feeling really. When they're facing teams that park the bus or don't score a lot like Newcastle, Watford, etc., I fancy my chances. When a team is favorite to win a game, I lean towards playing them too. The clean sheet odds don't really appeal to me as clean sheets are too hard to predict as you said.

I played Tomori and thought it was very unlucky. That wasn't a pen imo. West Ham have just not been keeping cleanies really. Wouldn't worry much about benching Soyuncu. I can see why you did it. I almost did too.

My back 5 got 50 points this week. probably as mush as the last 4 weeks put together.
Lundstrum benchers I have no sympathy for. Set and forget if ever I have seen one. Rico, I can understand. Having TAA until this week has hurt me because I have played him sometimes when the clean sheet odds are not in his favour.

Just don't put yourself in a situation to second guess clean sheets. Have a clear distinction in mind between the defenders you want to play and the defenders you want to bench. And then play the same defenders week after week.

      I’ve no idea.
But currently, I am playing Söyüncü and Lundstram.
With Tomori and Rico on the bench.

I’m starting to consider benching TAA for Rico. But I know that’s too extreme.

Never thought these cheap defenders would become free scoring and give me benching heading each week.

My plan was to change Alonso and Otamendi for TAA & Robertson over the next 1/2 weeks. However with Soyuncu, Lundstram & Rico I might not bother. Two of those rotating each week with a Liverpool defender should be enough. That's without the possibility of a Palace defender coming into the frame in the next few weeks.

      We're playing an odds-based game.

That means a good decision may end up with fewer points in a given week than a bad decision.

I played Diop over Soyuncu, which cost me 15 points, but it was NOT a mistake.

A mistake would be defined as something that reduces your "expected score."

This week, the odds available from bookies for clean sheets for WHU and LEI were almost identical, and Diop's goal threat is no worse than Soyuncu's. So the expected points for each of them will have been extremely similar based on pre-match odds.

An optimal play is one that maximises your expected points, so I tend to let the Bookies work out the odds for me and go with what they say, unless goal threat plays a big enough role.

For me it's pretty much the same as you. It was between Rico and soy this week. Picked soy on the strength of Leicester having better cs odds, and me thinking that Manu had turned a corner with martial back. Lund got picked cos of his goal scoring odds and my other is taa.

I was kicking myself when Rico kept a cs.

It's just fortune mate. No rhyme or reason. Your always gonna leave points on ya bench.

Just look at bookmaker clean sheet odds. They have models that spit out prices based on match odds, over/under goal lines, and XG. By far the best way to look at it.

Based on CS odds and xGI, and adding eye test when it's a close call.

Put Diop and Soyuncu as an example, I would have valued down West Ham defense as I saw a big difference in GK ability between Fabianski and Roberto. When the stat was close, I would pick Soyuncu.

By having more time, could go back to dig into the stat by separating the matches played by Fab and Roberto, to try verifying the eye test. This time you will see the differences, and realize that no matter the odds company, or the betting crowd, has undervalued such recent factor.

      1) Avoid players with fixtures against the following teams:

      - Liverpool (have not failed to score this season)
      - Man City (one fail)
      - Chelsea (one fail)
      - Arsenal (one fail, but perhaps worth chancing away from home)
      - Wolves (one fail)
      - Leicester (two fails)
      - Spurs (two fails)

Man Utd, like Arsenal, are worth chancing away from home.

Not really with the value options out there:

                Pope
                Lund Robbo Soyuncu Trent (Otamendi)
                Mane Sterling KDB Mount (Odoi)
                Abraham Jiminez (Connolly)

Ota and Odoi need to go obviously

Thing is he’s playing his old team this week and will have something to prove to himself and others. Going to keep one more week then swap for Mane and also bring TAA in for pool double up.

Based on B & C, your benching Cantwell, Lund & Rico (or Soy, Jimi, Mount etc)

    Ryan.
    TAA. Robertson. Lund. Soy. Chilwell/Stevens.

With all the midfield options availble I believe you do not need any City.

KDB will be playing a deeper role with Rodri out, that will stifle his points progress. Sterling does not seem to be that good out wide on the left. Bilva and Marhez are rotation and bench hell holes.

Maddi, Perez, Salah, Mane, Perez, Pulisic, Tielemans, Willian and other budget options to have a really good midfield.

      Take your pick 😉

I'm happy with Pope in goal and TAA plus cheap rotating defenders, so I haven't included them as there as I am happy with them.

    Sterling, KDB, Son, Mount, Dendonk
    Auba, Jiminez, Abraham
    2FT, 0 in the bank

I need to take Son out but nothing expires me at his price or below and I can't see where money could come from for an upgrade to the Pool Mids. Aubameyang has good fixtures coming up so I'm reluctant to remove him

Weeks ago I was told that going no City will hurt me. Not saying I am right but going no City could very well see you thrive with all the options available from other teams.

Dilva is the last City asset I will own until further notice and he is being shipped out start of GW12.

Let's just be frank, owning City defence will see your rank being damaged with Pep playing a different defence just about each GW.

Sterling does not seem to fit in that LW role does he? KDB deeper role with Rodri out, going to see his points in decline.

Capping Sterling is a massive problem...

Jesus has now also made his entrance. Would not surprise me if Pep starts Aguero and Jesus more often from now on.
