How Leicester’s FPL assets are shaping up ahead of their excellent fixture run

Crystal Palace 0-2 Leicester City

  • Goals: Caglar Soyuncu (£4.8m), Jamie Vardy (£9.4m)
  • Assists: Jamies Maddison (£7.3m), Demarai Gray (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Soyuncu, Maddison x3, Kasper Schmeichel (£5.1m) x1

If the 9-0 victory over ten-man Southampton hadn’t fully convinced some Fantasy managers that Leicester City were worthy of investment, then maybe Sunday’s quietly impressive win at Selhurst Park would have provided the necessary incentive.

Plenty of Fantasy Premier League bosses did jump on the Foxes after their thrashing of the Saints.

Four of the five most-bought FPL assets of Gameweek 11 were on Leicester’s books, with just under 1.9 million transfers in total being used on Brendan Rodgers’ squad overall.

The cynics and the glass-half-full brigade, understandably pointing to the freak nature of the result and circumstances at St. Mary’s, would have been cautious about Sunday’s fixture in particular, with Crystal Palace having kept clean sheets in three of their five home league fixtures before this weekend.

No top-flight club had conceded fewer goals than the Eagles on their own soil in 2019/20, either.

This was perhaps a final audition for Jamie Vardy (£9.4m) and co, then, with some of the Premier League’s most obliging defences – including Arsenal, Aston Villa, Watford and Norwich City – to come in the next six Gameweeks.

While the goals didn’t flow as heavily as they did on the south coast, the Foxes produced the kind of accomplished performance that – dare we say it – bore the hallmarks of a title-chasing side.

Another tilt at the Premier League crown is probably unlikely but Brendan Rodgers’ side, along with Chelsea, are looking by some distance the best of the rest after Liverpool and Manchester City.

As for the Foxes’ Fantasy assets, there is plenty to excite.

This was another classic Vardy performance, with the Leicester striker anonymous for long periods (he had the fewest touches of any starting FPL forward in Gameweek 11) but somehow always a threat and popping up with his customary late goal after a superb team move when a rare blank seemed on the cards.

The premium FPL forward had already come close to giving the Foxes the lead in the first half, firing at Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) from a narrow angle on 17 minutes and then being narrowly pipped to the ball by the recalled Palace goalkeeper just before the break.

Both of those chances had been set up by sublime balls from James Maddison (£7.3m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.5m), with Vardy peeling off the Palace defence and almost benefitting from his teammates’ vision.

So long as those two playmakers remain fit and firing, then Vardy will get plenty of chances in the weeks and months to come.

The Leicester striker averages 7.43 FPL points per match since Rodgers first took charge at the King Power Stadium ahead of Gameweek 29 last season, and the former Celtic boss was asked about what tweaks he had made to Vardy’s game over the last eight months.

Rodgers said:

Firstly, from a defensive perspective, he’s not having to press the whole back four. He’s a guy that would run all day for you, so it’s now much more synchronised in terms of how he want him to press the game, he’s doing short bursts of pressing. He’s so clever in setting traps to press.

He’s playing more on the corridor, so he’s playing more central. The other guys, it’s their job to create the opportunities.

And I’ve asked him to stay on the last line because he’s such a threat. There was a couple of times there today I thought he was away – and when he’s away, he scores.

He’s a really, really top striker at this level, [we’ve made] some little adjustments that help him. He’s playing with a smile as well, he’s really enjoying his football and that’s always important as a player.

Maddison and Tielemans had as much work to do off the ball as on it at Selhurst Park, with neither posing much of a goal threat in their own right.

Maddison was a creative spark, though, particularly from dead-ball situations.

A goal from a set play had looked like it had been coming even before Caglar Soyuncu (£4.8m) got onto the edge of Maddison’s deflected cross in the 56th minute, with Jonny Evans (£5.1m), Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira (£6.3m) having gone close with headers.

Evans had indeed looked the likelier scorer up until his fellow centre-half’s opener, with Soyuncu more often the decoy or blocker at free-kicks and corners.

Tielemans, meanwhile, fired over from a well-worked corner on the half-hour mark.

Rodgers said of his side’s work at set-piece situations:

We try to be inventive, we try to be clever. We’re fortunate that we’ve got an incredible technician in James Maddison that can put it where you want.

We were unfortunate with one we worked in the first half, with Youri Tielemans. And then James’ delivery for the goal was fantastic.

We do a lot of work. Games like this here, that are going to be tight, it might be a set piece that wins you the game.

The Foxes kept their fourth clean sheet of the season on Sunday – only Sheffield United and Manchester City have recorded more – and in truth they were scarcely troubled, with a teasing Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.9m) cross and an off-target Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) curler about as close as the Eagles came to breaching the visitors’ defence.

Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) very nearly recorded his second successive double-digit haul, too, striking the inside of the post from close range in injury time.

While owners of Vardy, Tielemans, Maddison and the Leicester backline would have been relatively content with their assets’ displays, it was another mixed bag from Harvey Barnes (£5.9m) and Ayoze Perez (£6.1m).

The two wingers had shone at St. Mary’s but have been inconsistent for the most part this season, with Sunday another example of that: Barnes was peripheral after a bright start while Perez was frequently dispossessed or errant in possession, although did produce a couple of mazy runs into Palace territory and worked hard off the ball.

Perez’s dallying when clean through allowed Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) to get back on the half-hour mark, while Barnes couldn’t take a sublime Maddison pass into his stride later in the match.

While their Gameweek 10 hauls were eye-catching, let’s not forget that it’s just two weeks since Rodgers said that his wingers needed to “do more” for the side.

Palace still have a double-header against Chelsea and Liverpool to come before their FPL assets really demand our attention, with the Eagles top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 14-21.

Their attacking options still need to convince Fantasy managers of their worth, however, and Roy Hodgson’s side managed only three shots from inside the Leicester box on Sunday.

A lack of goals has been Palace’s problem for some time now and the creatively limited nature of their midfield – we saw James McArthur (£5.3m) playing in an advanced right-wing role on Sunday – is obviously to the detriment of attacking assets like Zaha and budget striker Jordan Ayew (£5.1m).

Their defence has been a strong-suit for a while and will perhaps be of greater interest to the Fantasy community upon the fixture swing, with the Eagles generally handling Leicester’s threat quite well on Sunday – although they did concede their third goal from a set-piece situation in two Gameweeks.

The fit-again Martin Kelly (£4.1m), still in one in four FPL squads, was only among the substitutes again as James Tomkins (£5.0m) and Gary Cahill (£4.5m) continue to keep him out of the side.

Cahill, McArthur and Kouyate all picked up injuries of varying degrees during the defeat to Leicester, with Hodgson saying of his walking wounded:

The worst one is McArthur because he has been struggling somewhat with a back injury. He definitely felt his back quite seriously during that second half, that’s why we had to take him off. He was actually having a very good game but his back injury prevented him from continuing.

As for Gary Cahill and Cheikh, I think they were blows to the head, which we see more and more these days, but I don’t think either of those two will be out of training on Tuesday. But they may have a sore head I’m afraid this evening and they will need tomorrow to recover.

Reflecting on the match, Hodgson added:

I thought it was a relatively even game. I don’t think I could have asked a lot more from the Palace team than they gave out there today.

I thought our defensive organisation was good and we restricted them to basically a minimum of chances. Our defending from the set plays and free-kicks had been good but unfortunately one proved too much for us.

We weren’t out of the game even at 1-0. I never had the feeling we were out of this game. But at 2-0, so close to the end, I’m afraid that was a bridge too far and we had to accept then that we weren’t going to get back in it. It was important then, I felt, not to concede more goals because we’d opened up our midfield and gone to a 4-4-2 at 0-1 in an attempt to bring it back to 1-1. That was making it a lot easier for them in that very good midfield area, where they have so many talented players, and I would have been disappointed if we conceded more goals.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Ward, Tomkins, Cahill, Van Aanholt; Milivojevic, Kouyate (Meyer 74′), Schlupp; Zaha, Ayew (Benteke 78′), McArthur (McCarthy 78′).

Leicester City XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel; Pereira, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell; Ndidi; Perez (Gray 74), Tielemans, Maddison (Praet 90′), Barnes (Morgan 85′); Vardy.

      I'd go Tielemans

Think the lack of European action will be increasingly important for Leicester. Mount has done great of course but not really so much to justify all those price rises. And well Tielemans offers much better value and has great fixtures.

    Morning all...

2FT and not averse to taking a hit for a mini-wildcard. Also have 2.2 ITB.

What would you do here? I definitely want to do Maupay to Vardy so I need to save 1.2 somewhere. My initial plan was to do Sterling to Son but the red card has scuppered that.

    Ryan - Button
    Trent - VVD - Soyoncu - Lundstram - Kelly
    Sterling - Salah - KDB - Mount - Cantwell
    Abraham - Maupay - Greenwood

2FT and 2.2 ITB. Thoughts welcome.

I thought so too, literally remember telling people to OG it’s him as he wasn’t nailed after SHU bought a couple midfielders and the fact Lundstram only started a handful of games in the last 3 years. It makes absolutely no sense he has reached the place he is in now

I think it's really hard to call that game.

Will City go for it in the hope of closing the gap, or will there be a bit of fear about letting the lead slip to 9 points.

Will Liverpool play more defensive knowing that not losing the game would be huge for them?

Or will it just be another 4-3...

      Repost:

No Rodri or Dilva against Pool. Means Gundogan has to be the second CAM, so Fernandinho has to be the DM. Ota + Stones CB pairing likely, due to injuries everywhere else

Good shout. Hopefully means KDB can break free from CDM and play the Dilva role. I worry it might mean this instead though after Bilva played there after Dilva sub:

        Striker
        Sterling Bilva Mahrez
        Gundo KDB
        LB Stones Ferna RB
        Ederson

Ah yes. This seems sensible too. A balance of attack and defence

Once Pep has two or more options of how to set-up even with injuries, I instantly give up on trying to predict. So I won't cap Mane

          Thanks 🙂

Yeah exactly no point guessing on him but think he’ll struggle at anfield with their form personally. Also believe he’ll do anything to not play Ota vs Salah and mane but we’ll see as we say there is no point! Probably a huge surprise coming

Despite a green arrow and a perfectly acceptable OR, I think I am losing the plot a little bit. Made truly, truly awful transfers last week - took out Montoya so I could bring in Connolly (I'm doubled up on Brighton keepers) so lost his 12 points. Then at the last minute took a -4 to do Maddison to Sterling, and then switched the captaincy from Vardy to Sterling. I've already done a -4 this week trying to fix the mess I've made of my team (including getting rid of Connolly!) - just feel a bit out of control.....

Pretty similar to my team. I brought Connolly in with the idea that after the Norwich game I would go 3-5-2, but I just don't think that sits well with me. I started the season that way with Greenwood and I didn't like it then either - thought I might feel differently as Connolly is at least a viable option in terms of getting minutes on the pitch. Did Otamendi to Soyuncu yesterday and when I logged in this morning I realised that left me exactly enough money for Connolly to Jiminez and I couldn't resist it. So now it's a case of fingers crossed for no injuries this week, but I do still have the WC available if needed.

I might be on 3-5-2 as long as I have TAA + Robbo. The funds for Jimenez can't seem to come from anywhere in my team, so I've accepted him as another Auba/Mendy/Alonso/Pereira/Pulisic. "Can't have 'em all"

The moves should work for you though. Best of luck!

If you don’t want maddison your choices are Pulisic or martial. I’m open to having Maddison too which is making my choice really tough, going to go to the wire for me

Maybe I’m being unnecessarily stubborn saying no to Maddison as he is clearly the best pick of those 3 imo

It’s not totally clear but he may be the one I end up with. He is by far the best Leicester asset as long as the other team has 11 men on the pitch otherwise the other get jammy

My other option is to not do anything this week and hope Kun delivers vs LIV

Ah fair play. Don’t know why I thought I remembered you as a fellow Kun owner.

Holding him and having 2FT for my moves may be far tastier tbh

I had him in for hit after I wa so furious for getting Kane in and captained for that GW he scored 16, then I WC him out for Auba but I was very vocal about Aguero and defend those who own him because he is a good pick. Hold and 2FTs imo and see what mid week brings

You're setting yourself up for a rather expensive bench...

...which might not be such a bad thing after all, but you'll have to be precise with weekly starting XI choices

      Pulisic

Yes this is the main downside. Alternative would be to keep Dendo and upgrade Barnes and have lots of cash itb for future moves

Four 1 pointers inc captain and two zeros from Pieters and Janmaat. Has none of the popular options on here in Lundstram, Soyuncu or Tammy to bail me out. OR doubled.

87 points all out, 400k rise in rank 😎

Smooth: had 2 FTs, after two rough GWs I held my nerve and just did Dunk > Willems, instead of making two big changes.

Rough: captained KDB, and benched both Willems (8) and Rico (6)...but then I was never going to bench Mount (1) and Wilson (1) and play a 5-3-2 formation, let's face it.

      So Smooth.

100 Club or more like Room 101 (points).
All starters, no jam. Lords Lundstram and Farquaad hauls.
Trent, Maddison, Mane, Jimi, Serge(c), Tammy all delivering.

Lesson heeded - to be patient post-wildcard: 28 in GW9, 42 in GW10 not pleasant experiences.
This has more than made up for it and back flirting with the 100k mark, up from 650k.

      Rough

Benched Lundstram and Soyuncu for CHO and Connolly.

Together (35) they comfortably outscored my entire midfield and forward line (Sterling c 2, CHO 1, Mount 1, Salah 2, KDB 2, Connolly 2, Abraham 12 = 22)

OR more than doubled from 260k to 560k.

At least logic for benching them was correct with attacking returns for Robbo and TAA and clean sheet for Dunk.....

Smooth: score of 89, despite benching McGinn and captain KDB.

Smooth: 90 pointer. Soy and Lundstram defence legends. Kun captain paid off over Sterlo-fear, plus Mane and Abra hauls. 520k rank rise - now 238k.
The crucial element this week - I did nothing. Aguero to Sterling for a round-about hit tempted me all week and managed to resist thankfully - and the good advice here helped a lot.

Smooth; I did a housekeeping transfer this week as I had two and no pressing issues which was Cantwell out for Dendoncker which gave me 0.3m in the bank. This then meant I switched my bench order to Lundstram first sub, Dendoncker second. When the team sheets came out I was two down straight away with Grealish and Otamendi not playing. Step up the mighty Lunds to save the day with 21 points! One of those afternoons when the points flow. Ryan, Trent, Robertson, Jimenez, Abraham all returning.

Rough; KdB(c) fail. Kane not starting, compounding my decision not to make the switch to Vardy last week. It’s now cost me about 20 points and 0.6m value swing!

Green arrow with 74 points and moved up to 31k.

Rough: where do I start...dumped back out of the top 1million OR

Otamendi cameo blocked Soyuncu 14 pts.

My 2 FT Mahrez & Haller --> KDB & Connolly was an epic fail as had I done nothing, Haller got an assist and Mahrez blank would've resulted in Soyuncu 14 pts.

Sterling (C) & KDB blanks home to So'ton
      Salah blank v Villa.

Smooth - 70pts and a 150k rise up to 403k. Lundstram and Soyoncu killing it at the back, Abraham, Trent and Ryan chipping in nicely.

Rough - Yet another captain fail with Sterling and the rest of my midfield Salah KDB Mount was shocking. Expected a good score from Maupay but that was a let down - he's now gone for Vardy.

My friend Rob has had a bit of a nightmare this week, which I think would be great for the 'Rough and the Smooth' section of the podcast.

He thought he engaged his wildcard but did not... He subsequently made 20 transfers over the game week as he tweaked his team. After Saturday's points came in, it became apparent that he forgot to tick the wildcard option and instead took 20 x -4 'hits', which has resulted in an 80 point deduction from his overall total.

Finally a smooth, 2 free transfers made, Otamendi and Wilson (2points) out for Soyuncu and Vardy (20 points). So an 18 point swing and with Lord Lundstram,Mane,Tammy and TAA delivering, a nice 80 point GW.

Rough - transferred out Maddison and Aubameyang for Sterling (c) and Connolly due to fears about Sterling's potential to score a monster haul against Southampton. Those two transfers cost me -13. (I knew it was a risk...)

Soyuncu and Rico both on my bench. Failed to learn from last week when exactly the same happened.

64 but could have been so much better.

Rough: Lundstram and Rico on bench. Sterling keeps frustrating as captain.
Smooth: Soyunchu, Jiminez, Tammy, Mane all chipped in to save my GW to some extent.

Still can't get over that lost 21 points.

Net result: Still with 2FTs, and got Lundstram off my bench for 21 points.

Only smooth for me this week.
      82pts, even with Son(c).. 🙂
Halved my rank from 1.5 mil to just over 700k.
The smoothest part was getting 6 points off my bench from Guilbert who got subbed at 67 minutes, banking a clean sheet.

      Smooth:
World chess champion Magnus Carlsen (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1908330/event/11) is now up to 63rd in the FPL world.
He is also 7th in Norway and top of the Grandmaster League (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/35182/standings/c).
This is his 6th FPL season, his best previous finish being 2397th in 2017/18.
He started GW1 with three Scandinavians (Lundsrtram, Haller and King) in his first eleven, and has not yet taken any hits or used any of his chips.

      Smooth but Rough but Smooth:
Scoutcaster Luke (aka Disable) made the bold moves of taking a 12 point hit (to bring in Robertson, Sterling, Connolly and Cancelo for Otamendi, Mahrez, Aubameyang and Kelly) and triple captaining Sterling's single point.
      He made a game-week score of 80 (-12) and move up 312k places from 1416k to 1104k.
But he was fortunate that Cancelo did not play, as this resulted in Lundstram being autosubbed from his bench.

Woeful season littered with poor decisions continues.

After Mahrez and Wilson to Vardy and Martial done early with 2FT, I did Aubameyang and McGinn to Salah and Connolly for an 8 point hit. 17 points lost in the process.

FirstWorldProblems level rough... playing a 'dead' team in the FFS HU league. They do have good players, but also a fair bit of chaff. 4 players fail to take the field, 27 off the bench for him... Ryan (6), Baldock (6), Soy (14), Cantwell (1)

Vardy dropping out of BP range meant I would up on 74... and my opponent on 74. I felt cheated.

Lundstram now leads the way as the highest scoring defender in the game. This week his 21 points solidified him as FPL royalty, however it’s not just him in the cut price defender bracket that’s a shining light right now.

Soyuncu scored 14 points in GW11, Montoya got 12, Guilbert went off before liverpool scored to keep his clean sheet and Rico got his third straight clean sheet.

So is there a reasonable case for ditching the premium defenders all together? Should we hold on to one or both of TAA and Robertson? With Manchester City defenders at a constant risk of rotation are the likes of Walker, Angelino and Mendy worth a place in our team or are they too much of a risk?

Good points but that was a beautiful freak weekend for Soy and Lundstram owners and we all know it.
That said, where do we put the money right now? Granted having one pool fullback is still essential, and with Chelsea and Leicester offering value over say Arsenal and Spurs - I genuinely don't see the point in spending all the cash right now until city fixtures ease out.

Long-term they're not worth it. Otamendi has cancelled out the haul I got from him GW6 by keeping Soyuncu on the bench this GW.

Doubling up on Liverpool fullbacks looks a good option though, but if Salah returns to form then it could easily become the case of Salah, Mane and Trent/Robbo.

Yep I tend to agree - if Salah finds form and sorts his ankle then it seems like the double at the back is a non option but with Salah not up to scratch I fancy the double defence for 12 onwards

I’ve had Trent Robbo Lundstram and Kelly all season. The last spot has been Walker-Peters, then Otamendi, now Rico. I’m playing Trent Robbo and Lundstram every week now. Just about got away with it this week with Grealish and then Kane not playing. When are we ever going to get a 4.0m defender playing in a free midfield role ever again!

My plan was TAA & Robertson over the next 1/2 weeks. However with Soyuncu and Lundstram adrift in a sea of blue fixtures and Rico playing his part in an inexplicably strong Bournemouth defence, it feels like I'd be benching points on a regular basis. I was also moving towards Guaita & PvA in 3 weeks but I now can't see past any of the magic beans.

Where should we go for “expensive” defenders?
Liverpool? Sure, pick one or both of a Robertson and TAA, but clean sheets are sparse and attacking returns are unpredictable, as nice as they are when they come.
Man City? Simple question - who?! Nobody is secure in that back line, Pep’s rotating it more than his front 6.
Chelsea? Clean sheets? Nope. Alonso is at risk of benching any given game.
Man U? Not reliable for clean sheets and Maguire/AWB isn’t getting attacking returns.
Leicester’s expensive pair will get returns but sporadically - could you use the cash of Pereira or a Chilwell over Soyuncu elsewhere for more points? I think so.

Who else? There’s few premium options - might as well go Lundstram and another sub-5.0m option and be done with it.

Considering the hauls at the back, can a different 5 at the back strategy work :

      TAA/Robbo/Soy/Chilwell/Lundy

Very tempted by it considering varying returns from mid priced attackers

I have TAA and four cheap-ish defenders (Lundstram, Soyuncu, Tomori, Rico). You definitely don't need to spend any more at the moment.

My problem is I keep making the wrong decisions about who to play. I've benched Rico for all of his clean sheets, and Soyuncu this week as well. (Can anyone beat my tally of 11 clean sheets on my bench this season?)

I think it will be hard to ever bench Lundstram again now, so I'm unconvinced I need Robbo - I can play TAA, Lundstram and 1 (or more) of the other three each week. Don't think Robbo is worth the extra 2.5 or so.

I transferred Robbo in last week, so now have

TAA, Robbo, Soy, Tom, Lord Lund

Will play 2 x Liverpool "attacking midfielders" every week, then perm 1 or 2 from the other 3. After this next weekend, Liverpool fixtures will surely deliver multiple clean sheets to go with the goals and assists.

How about Trent, Robbo, Lundy, Soy and a 3.9 bench fodder? No need for even a 4.3 Rico or 4.4 Saiss with those other four.

I've already taken a price drop on Ota - any suggestion who to replace him with?

Pretty set on TAA, Soy and Lundy (i've Rico and Ota rounding off the defenders).

I am planning to do Pukki > Vardy with my money ITB but concerned as Pukki drops and Vardy rises I may be priced out before Friday. Should I pull the trigger now, and hope the midweek fixtures go ok for the rest of my team? I have a rubbish bench.

    Heaton / Pope
    TAA / Lundstram / Soyuncu / KWP* / Guilbert*
    Martial / Maddison / Mane / Mount / KDB
    Pukki / Abraham / Connolly

If you'd be priced out then you have to make the move...

Guardiola will surely play the big guns against liverpool.

That said what score predictions do we have for pool city?

    I see a disappointing (fantasy wise) 1-1

Probably a 2-1 to Liverpool based on form and history.

I cant't see the city backline coping well with liverpool attack at anfield

        3-1 or 4-1

Cant understand how i seem to have 8-9 template players and still somehow keep dropping in rank. This week, it was the lack of Mane and Jimenez (compared to my Dilva and Rashford) that was the big downfall in most of my ML. Anyhow, best move here with 1ft and 0m. Also have a WC which is a very tempting option

    Pope -- Heaton
Taa Tomori Lundy -- Rico Lascelles
Sterling Kdb Mount Dilva -- Cantwell
    Tammy Rashford Vardy

A: Save FT and get Rico/Lascelles to come on for Dilva. Can then aim to convert Sterling + Dilva >> Mane + Robbo in gw13
B: Dilva >> Martial/Maddison...and then just do Sterling > Mane in gw13. Means opting for Martial/Maddison over Robbo
C: Do B and WC in gw13 to get Mane but also keep Sterling. This would be done by downgrading Rashford + Vardy >> Jimenez + Ings along with some other changes
    D: Something else

Otamendi dropping in value by £0.1 every day now, sound!

Doesn't matter that other players never drop.
