Shelvey and Newcastle expose West Ham’s high defensive line

West Ham 2-3 Newcastle

Goals: Fabian Balbuena (£4.3m), Robert Snodgrass (£5.2m) | Ciaran Clark (£4.3m), Federico Fernández (£4.4m), Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m)

Assists: Sébastien Haller (£7.3m), Manuel Lanzini (£6.3m) | Joelinton (£5.7m), Jetro Willems (£4.5m), Isaac Hayden (£4.4m)

Bonus Points: Willems x3, Shelvey x2, Snodgrass x2

Newcastle took advantage of some questionable West Ham defending and tactical flaws to serve up one of the surprise results of Gameweek 11.

Despite coming to the London Stadium without an away goal since Gameweek 5, the Magpies found the net three times.

Key to their success was a return to the starting line-up for central midfielder Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m), featuring from the beginning for the first time since Gameweek 6.

He dominated the midfield in a battle with Declan Rice (£4.8m), provided threat from set pieces and helped exposed a very defensive line from the hosts.

Everything went through Shelvey as Newcastle emerged as winners at West Ham

All afternoon long, West Ham were incredibly susceptible to the counter-attack, Shelvey very easily unleashing the pacey Miguel Almirón (£5.8m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m) in wide areas. He also hit the crossbar from the edge of the box.

In the end, Shelvey got his Fantasy returns from set pieces dispatching a free-kick from distance in the second after Isaac Hayden (£4.4m) was fouled.

Newcastle’s first goal also came from his delivery, his free-kick arriving at the back post for Joelinton (£5.7m) to nod down for Ciaran Clark (£4.3m) to score.

As Shelvey was one of the best players on the pitch, joined in Newcastle’s central midfield by Hayden returning from suspension, it will be interesting to see who gets the nod there in Gameweek 12.

Manager Steve Bruce has been relying on the family duo of Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) and Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m) in recent weeks but the former is suspended until Gameweek 14, while the latter dropped to the bench for this one.

“I just thought if we needed a pass, Jonjo could give a pass. With set-pieces, he’s made one today and scored one. Always in the back of my mind, I knew he was a West Ham fan so this is a stage he wants to play. He was very good today. He’s got to maintain it. Today, I got the decision right.” – Steve Bruce

Saint-Maximin had a clear run at an unguarded West Ham goal twice but failed to score

On a day when West Ham’s defence was so poor, Saint-Maximin really should have emerged with some attacking returns.

Running Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) ragged all afternoon, he twice he raced clear of West Ham’s high line and positioned himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Roberto Jiménez Gago (£4.4m).

On both occasions, Saint-Maximin’s shots weren’t as ruthlessly taken as they should be, saved by the goalkeeper.

On his second foray into an unguarded Hammers’ penalty area, the midfielder was able to pick up the pieces and square for Almirón, who also fired his effort straight at the goalkeeper.

While Saint-Maximin clearly should have done better with his end-product, it was a clear example of the blistering pace he brings to the Newcastle team.

“Well, I said from the first moment I saw (Saint-Maximin), he’s going to get you and excite you and take you off your seat. Unfortunately, he has been hampered by a horrible hamstring injury. If he stays fit and healthy, there’s things he must improve on but he’s got that natural ability which not many people have. He’s quick and he takes you. It’s natural. You cannot coach it. You’re either born with it – I believe he learned on the streets of France – and you can see. He just has to improve on the final thing, take the right pass, but that hopefully will come with time and experience because he’s only a young boy. He’s only 22. When you think Longy’s 22, it puts it into perspective.” – Steve Bruce

Willems continues to offer some attacking threat from the left-back position

Left-back Jetro Willems (£4.5m) was another exciting outlet for Newcastle, claiming an assist for Federico Fernández‘s (£4.4m) first-half header and emerging with three bonus points from the 3-2 win.

Whether such a morale-boosting win will mean better things for Newcastle assets from an attacking perspective moving forward remains to be seen.

As much as the Magpies were comfortably the better team and should probably have won by a three or four-goal margin, they were still somewhat wasteful, in spite of West Ham’s poor defending allowing them plenty of chances.

A Gameweek 12 meeting with Bournemouth, who are currently on a three-game streak for clean sheets, may prove trickier, although Aston Villa in Gameweek 13 could provide them with more opportunities.

As already mentioned, the story of this match from a West Ham perspective has to be about their dreadful defending. They were all over the place, especially, in the first half, and arguably should have been four goals down at the interval.

West Ham’s defence were all over the place against Newcastle, especially in the first half

Zabaleta was exposed by Saint-Maximin’s pace, Aaron Cresswell (£4.9m) allowed Almirón past him in the first-half, causing Issa Diop (£4.5m) to foul him and give away the free-kick that led to the opening goal.

Left-back Cresswell was also the man tasked with marking Clark for that set piece, despite the obvious height difference.

This was also Fabian Balbuena‘s (£4.3m) second start in a row, with Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) dropped against Sheffield United for no overtly obvious reason. As we saw on occasion last season, Balbuena was poor, has conceded four goals in two matches, and Ogbonna may feel confident about getting his place back.

Goalkeeper Roberto has come under fire from West Ham fans recently but his performance against Newcastle proved that to some extent, he can be credited for keeping scorelines respectable.

Roberto remains error-prone but also produced some excellent stops to keep the score down

This season he has averaged four saves per game, 2.2 of them produced inside the penalty area. Furthermore, without his contributions, West Ham could have conceivably been 4-0 down by half-time against Newcastle, his two stops denying Saint-Maximin the most important.

However, Roberto was still not without error on Saturday afternoon, caught in no man’s land for Newcastle’s second goal, allowing Fernández to score a simple header.

The West Ham goalkeeper should perhaps have done better for Shelvey’s free-kick, managing to get two hands on it but not enough to parry it away from his near post.

It is these sorts of errors that have ruined Roberto’s achievements since arriving at West Ham and already home supporters are greeting the saves he does make with ironic cheers – that can hardly be helping his confidence.

What makes West Ham’s display even more discouraging is the fact that Bruce’s players revealed after the match that they had been told to watch out for the high line and exploit it.

Such comments could further increase the pressure on Manuel Pellegrini to change things around ahead of a Gameweek 12 trip to Burnley. After all, West Ham are now without a clean sheet since their 2-0 win over Manchester United in Gameweek 6.

“We know that Pellegrini’s teams like to play a high line. The gaffer spoke about it before. They (West Ham) always struggle with runners from deep and we worked on it in training and it paid off.” – Jonjo Shelvey

“I don’t think I’m surprised – it was something we worked on during the week in training. The coaches explained to us the way they wanted us to play and encouraged us that, if we played that way, we would get in and get some chances. As I say, on another day we could have been four or five up and the game would have been over.” – Ciaran Clark

Snodgrass was one of a few West Ham players who had a good game against Newcastle

West Ham offered next to nothing offensively in the first half, Sébastien Haller (£7.3m) having their only decent chance, a bicycle kick well-saved by Martin Dúbravka (£5.0m).

Pellegrini shuffled his pack at half-time in an attempt to inject some life into his side’s attack.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy owners, Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) was replaced by Manuel Lanzini (£6.3m) while Albian Ajeti (£5.8m) came on for Mark Noble (£5.0m).

Those changes had some impact for the Hammers, Balbuena pulling one back from a corner, after Haller had flicked on at the near post.

That was the Frenchman’s first attacking return since Gameweek 8, although he extended his goalless run to three matches, skewing a second bicycle kick wide later in the match.

The only real shining light for West Ham was Robert Snodgrass (£5.2m), who impressed for the second match in a row back in the side.

Deployed at central midfield, he rifled home an impressive volley from the edge of the box to give Newcastle a scare.

That was his second goal in as many matches since returning to side, which could see him claw his way back to being a viable route into the West Ham attack.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Roberto; Cresswell, Diop, Balbuena, Zabaleta (Fredericks 72′); Rice, Snodgrass, Noble (Ajeti 46′), Yarmolenko (Lanzini 46′); Haller.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Willems (Dummett 87′), Clark, Lascelles, Fernández, Yedlin; Saint-Maximin (Atsu 77′), Shelvey, Hayden, Almirón; Joelinton (Carroll 89′).

Saw this on the FPL Reddit and thought it was worth a post on here!

Many of us had a difficult start of the season and some of us are already giving up, I'd like to remind you that there are still 27 game weeks left.

    In other words:

    * If the season were a day, you probably would be having breakfast. It would be 06h57.
    * If the season were a year, it would be in the 4th week of spring. It would be April 15th.
    * If the season were a football match, it would be in the 27th minute of the game.
    * If the season were John Lundstram's life span, he didn't start his youth academy yet. He would join Everton's youth academy in 8 months, at the age of 8.
    * If the season were Mount Everest, you'd still have 6,282 meters (20,610 ft.) to climb to the top.
    * If the season were earth's history, it would take, roughly, another 3,195,000,000 years before men arrive.
    * If the season were a marathon, you'd still have 29.96km (19.62miles) to run.

Long story short: there's still plenty of time, relax!

    Early transfers made:

    Auba > Vardy
    Yarmolenko > Mane

Probably the most confident I've felt in a while about 2 transfers! Feels good to have finally brought in two, in-form assets. Vardy and Mane are 1st and 3rd respectively for goals scored this calendar year.

Jonty asked recently about 'What FPL seasons have you learnt this year'. I think a main one of mine is to look closer at form instead of fixtures/stats. Vardy's and Mane's form were there to see from the back-end of last season but I ignored both, and 'wasted' transfers and (to an extent) my wildcard on the likes of Barnes, Haller, Yarmolenko and Aubameyang. All had shown glimpses of good form, stats, and fixtures but the likes of Vardy and Mane are tried and tested FPL assets.

    Anybody else think the same?

Cheers. Luckily had enough in the bank but it means I starting all Rico, Lundstram and Soyuncu this week (might not necessarily be a bad thing!).

I think this is a good, and undervalued, point.

Stats don't tell the whole story. Look at Vardy. His role is literally to not get involved in a lot of aspects of the game. He may not have many touches or shots in the box, but he's always there to finish off the move.

Made the moves a good while back (8.9 and 11.5) but don't think Auba is remotely in the same category as the others you mention.

8 goals and an assist in 11 matches is superb form. That's one attacking return fewer than Mane.

Yeah, I guess Auba is an exception. What I meant by him was Arsenal's form in general. They tailed off at the end of last season, and 11.0 is an expensive price for anyone in a side not showing the best of form.

          I know what you mean.

But Auba has a fantastic GI - far in excess of Vardy. That may not be maintained but he's in the same category as Mane and Vardy for me - golden boot etc and clear talisman

Had a brain fade a week back when I saw Kane at 10.8 - seemed insane value for someone ticking over fairly well and with the knack of just scoring despite all eye tests.

              For real?

Granted, they still have some half decent fixtures after Leicester but 1 return in 4 from Auba was enough for me to ship him.

After SOT, Arsenal's home games are: BRI, MCI, CHE, MUN, SHU (that's until February). No captaincy options there for Auba, IMO. And Arsenal's away form is atrocious.

But did he show sustained form? Vardy and Mane showed it constantly throughout 2019. I know they're premium assets so would expect it more from them. Also, I think everyone knew Barnes was a rotation risk at the start of the season with the like of Perez, Maddison, Tielemans etc.

Because you are adding points from 2019 after the point where Barnes fell off, which is when people would have brought him in on wildcard. Bugger off.

GW 21-38 of 2018/19 and first 4 game weeks of 2019/20 Barnes (which is about when most played an early wildcard which would have been influenced by total stats from 2019) outscored Wood and had massively superior underlying stats.

Repost as last comment got lost. Current team is:

    Pope
    TAA Rico Soy Lund (Mings)
    Salah KDB Sterling Mount (Yarmo)
    Abraham Vardy (c)

    1FT / 0.0 ITB

Not happy with yarmo but only 1FT this week and don't like the look of any other 6.0 mids. Options are:

    A) Yarmo and Mings > Tielemans and 4.0 (probably punt on brandon williams at united) for a -4 before Tielemans increase
    B) Save and risk losing out on Tielemans

    Thoughts?

Best Mid option for below 9.1m, only have to play 1gw as I'll use my WC next week. Who would be your choice? (Already own Mount and 3 Chelsea players)

    Captain?
    A) Lewandowski
    B) Mbappe

    One week punt (maybe more)?
    1) Origi
    2) Abraham

Do you think J. Gomez will start?
    Y) Yes
    X) No

    Will Son start for Spurs?

Neither, Haaland if you don't already have and upgrade elsewhere? Abraham if has to be one of the two?

J.Gomez to start? My guess is 60/40 against.

How are you doing in UCL fantasy overall anyway? OR? Used limitless chip, WC's yet? Here's mine :

      Ederson / Vlacho
      Hakimi / Tagliafico / Halstenberg / Lodl / Tavares
      Sterling / Mane / Kroos / Gnabry / Tousart
      Messi(c) / Lewandowski / Haaland

Pts 251, OR 7769..no chips or WC yet used.

It's a domestic version I play.. So its not compareable.. You have much more funds in the Sky version. But it looks decent. Don'think Hakimi will start this week though. Don't see any reason Hakimi doesn't start and he's gold when he does as he's been playing OOP as a winger!! Kroos done ok for me last 2 weeks with a 6 then 9pter and he'll start, Tavares just fodder!!

People having choose who to play between the likes of Rico, Lundstram, and Soyuncu.

I'm in the position of having to start all 3! Although I guess that makes my decision a little easier.

Other options would be to start either Connolly or Cantwell but both are big rotation risks.

Play the 3 defenders - There are going to be weeks where they don't product and thats to be expected of 4.0-4.5 defenders. Not a fan of those 1 points from the above mentioned and would rather risk the defenders in a less than ideal match.

      I'd ditch Sterling

He'll get the top 6 fixtures but I'm guessing he'll be rested for either Newcastle or Burnley - he'll be due then anyway. Auba has had a quiet time recently but he's currently nailed and ticking over decently with 3 prime fixtures on the horizon.

Sterling is going to produce. If you're happy enough to have that happen and not own him than yes.

Nobody will ever tell you to drop a big asset until you've already missed the boat. Go with your gut instinct, I don't think there's a right answer here

Salah or Robertson as the third Pool player to go with Mane and Trent? I always get the 50-50s wrong. Going with Robbo allows me to have Maddison and Jiminez

      I'm going with Salah.
Defenders at such cheap price doing the trick so not keen on Pool double up. Got Taa.

If you don't have Salah or Mane right now (will get one in for Sterling in GW13 or 14) is Mane clearly the one to go for? He's the form player at the moment but Salah does have pens going for him and with the price difference down to 0.3m you're not saving much money wise by picking Mane. Is it recency bias or is Mane simply the better pick?

You probably can do player comparison

Mane is the man for past 1 year !
Although I'm going to double up alongside Salah, but if i had choice for only 1, it'd be Mane

They’re very similar. I like that Salah seems quiet. All the more reason for him to explode and upset everyone

That's what I'm thinking. He's bound to come good.

Pens aren't a slam dunk if Milner is on the pitch and the recency bias stretches back almost the whole calendar year. Mo is still quite the player when he's firing of course but it's been a time now.

Think the real issue is whether to double up mids or defence if you're determined to triple Liverpool.

Neither for me as I have Firmino.

What do you think of this?

    2 FT. Current team:

    Heaton - Pope
    TAA - Soy - Montoya - Lund - Rico
    Salah - Sterling - KDB - Mount - McGinn
    Wilson - Greenwood - Abraham

    Salah + Greenwood + Wilson --> Vardy + Aubameyang + 4.4 mid (-4)

Then Sterling to Mane next week - Yay or Nay?

    Alisson Button
    TAA Soyuncu Tomori Lundstrum Rico
    KDB Martial Maddison Mount Cantwell
    Aguero Firmino Abraham

    1FT 1.6 in the bank

Concerned about so many city and Liverpool players. In my head I always think of big teams cancelling each other out. Is there anything I can do? Would you swap out Aguero for Vardy?

Auba, I don't see as an option anyways (Vardy Tammy Jimenez currently so not looking for a change unless Injury)

      Yep

He's moving into differential territory isn't he? A haul would change that almost overnight though I guess unless too many commit to double defence before.

Salah 27.6% and Mane 32.9% overall and difference will became higher till deadline. Nice to see that things are changing because I plan to keep Mo.

I wouldn't want Aub anyway. I'd rather Lacazette. Also if I had the choose between mane or salah I'd want Mane even if they were the same price. I've had Mane all season along with Vardy and no plans of getting rid anytime soon.

I'm in Mane over salah all day long camp. I've had Mane since the start of the season and will be kepping him unless he gets injured.
