Why I’m thinking of selling Raheem Sterling after another awful Gameweek

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy reflects on another Gameweek to forget in his latest Pro Pundits piece.

Two weeks ago I scored 25 points in Fantasy Premier League. In my article I wrote: “It’s unlikely I’ll have a worse Gameweek all season”.

It got worse.

Gameweek 11 was brutal. While I scored eight more points than in Gameweek 9, the red arrow this week was huge and I fell nearly 700,000 places to 993,288. Where do I hand in my FPL badge?

Scoring 33 points in total, when John Lundstram (£4.8m) gets 21 on his own, is hard to take. It’s not even about benching him – I don’t even own him! I have no excuse.

My transfer was Nicolás Otamendi (£5.3m) to Harry Maguire (£5.4m). I don’t think many people were looking to bring in Manchester United defenders but I liked the look of the underlying defensive team stats, the next four fixtures and the potential for attacking returns. In hindsight I should have considered the fact that Man United don’t possess a player that can successfully deliver a ball into the box. Attacking returns look unlikely.

Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) was one bright spark. It feels as though the whole community is talking about Jamie Vardy (£9.4m) as a captain for Gameweek 12 but Abraham is only seven points behind the Leicester striker, with 175 fewer minutes played.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) was the only other player I owned that didn’t blank. He did what he’s done all season: delivered attacking returns, but without a clean sheet. I’m just trying to imagine the huge scores once the clean sheets come.

When I look at my team for Gameweek 12 I don’t like what I see.

I own too many players I want to get rid of, and not enough players I want for longer term. I feel like I’m behind on transfers already, and if I just look to patch the side up each week I’m going to be behind for some time to come.

Trying to be critical of my decisions so far this season, I’d say I’ve made too many short-term transfers. There was Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) to Son Heung-min (£9.6m), knowing I’d want the Belgian back as soon as he was fit. While I feel a bit unlucky not to have gotten points from Neal Maupay (£6.1m) this weekend, he was another player brought in knowing I’d want rid of him just two weeks later because of the fixtures.

That’s why I’m looking at taking my second points hit of the season and making it a -8. I want players I can potentially hold for six to eight Gameweeks so I can “reset” my team and not be forced to chase but instead can look for new opportunities over the next few weeks.

I’ve also got to look at priorities. Lundstram looks almost essential but ahead of a run against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, I’m hoping the points will slow down before I have a spare transfer to use on him.

Looking at the Season Ticker in the Members Area, the fixtures for Leicester and Wolves over the next six to seven Gameweeks look great.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.2m) and Vardy have everything you could want from an FPL point of view: nailed-on, form, fixtures and penalties.

Vardy is already highly owned and rising, but Jiménez is owned by 11.8% and dare I say it, still a bit of a differential?

They’re both picks you can rely on, and hopefully won’t give me needless headaches in the coming weeks.

We talk a lot about the underlying statistics and that Vardy can’t sustain them but the man is clinical, gets plenty of big chances and takes most of his shots in the box. My new front three would be Abraham, Vardy and Jiménez and, as you can see from the last four Gameweeks, that looks promising.

The tough decision for me is how to fund this move. A switch from a 3-5-2 formation to 3-4-3 requires three transfers and a lot of cash. It’s why I’m looking at removing Raheem Sterling (£12.1m).

It’s not an easy decision for me as I like the security blanket a player like Sterling provides and I’m certainly not taking him out thinking he’s not going to score plenty of points this season. If you look at the last four Gameweeks, he’s still getting plenty of chances and creating them, with an expected goal involvement (xGI) of around 3.4 over the last four Gameweeks.

The top reason I’m looking at making this move is captaincy. I don’t see me wanting to captain a Manchester City player until Gameweek 20, and even then Vardy plays West Ham and Liverpool face Wolves.

Instead of keeping one player at £12.1m who I won’t captain, I’d be spreading the funds to more value players, and also players who could be genuine captain options in the coming weeks.

With Liverpool’s fixtures looking extremely appetising over the Christmas period, a permanent Sadio Mane (£12m) captain could be ideal. Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) will have to show some serious form against Manchester City and Crystal Palace for me to not remove him in the next couple of weeks. The strategy would be to have one premium player who I can look to captain most weeks, with value players elsewhere. From there it’s just crossed fingers.

Captaincy this week however is going to be much more interesting and I’m looking away from Liverpool and Man City players. While it could be an open game, it also has the makings of a tight affair with Liverpool not wanting to lose their six-point lead and Man City not wanting to be nine points behind this early in the season.

If I bring in Jiménez and Vardy, then my front three are all contenders. Despite Aston Villa being middle of the road in terms of goals conceded they are still conceding a lot of shots in the box, the most over the last four Gameweeks with Palace a close second. That makes the Mexican a shrewd differential choice.

I think it’s very close between Vardy and Abraham: they’re posting good numbers, both are in good form and playing for teams scoring plenty of goals. The potential advantage for Vardy is that Arsenal are unlikely to either want to sit deep and defend or be able to, so that should leave space in behind. We saw against Crystal Palace some fantastic through-balls from James Maddison (£7.4m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) which nearly had Vardy through on goal and I’m expecting to witness more of that on Saturday.

Choosing Abraham certainly isn’t a bad decision this week, but there’s something enticing about Vardy and that’s likely where I’ll place my armband.

I can’t help but wonder as I finish writing this if in two weeks time I’ll be back, wondering how I can get Sterling back in.

Will probably depend on the added value you have tied up in him but i am definitely keeping. Connoly first sub.

If you want to replace him, one of the leicester mids would be my first choice, Martial or Trossard could come good too

I cant believe after watching the Mount injury that it is anything more than a slight sprain. Sure he may miss this wknd but certainly will get the IB to rest it up and be ready...………...

Cant decide on my dilva replacement based on my future strategy so couple of quick questions:

    1) Rashford + Tomori or
    2) Ings + Robbo

    A) Maddison + Ings or
    B) Perez + Jimenez

    X) Sterling + Ings or
    Y) Kdb + Rashford

The main plus about Sterling for me is his minutes. Lots of them and he rarely cameos. He has 75 or the day off (albeit possibly against someone City can thump but then they score goals v anyone).

Looking at City If Kun and Sterling had the same setup in minutes I'd go Kun all day, but it ain't the case. Kun has rotation AND cameo worry. KDB is playing deeper till Laporte is back IMO. The rest of the attackers are just impossible to predict to avoid cameos...

I dont think differentials have to be pidgeonholed into under 10% ownership category.

He's close to being only in a third of teams right now. Thats a pretty big chunk of managers who dont have an arguable top 5 player in the game.

Could be huge for climbing up the ranks as managers around your individual rank probably dont have him anymore.

I'm more interested in the Pool attacking double up tbh which will be possible only after i sell Raz.
      Fixtures aren't overwhelming too.
Will sell after Pool play Palace & City play Chelsea

I think his sales are a function of the poor form he demonstrated throughout what was a superb fixture run... combined with what looks to be a more congested and more difficult run of fixtures coming at a time when Liverpool, Leciester, and Chelsea are offering nailed alternatives all over the park and all over the price range, with much better fitures for all three of those teams for weeks to come

45 points from those last 10 gameweek fixtures is just criminal playing in that city team and consuming 12.0 of budget into the bargain

      1. Karan14
        • 7 Years

Would you still sell him if you had KDB, TAA, Mane, Vardy, Mount & Tammy? And if yes for who?

Right I agree with all of your points. He hasnt done enough for his price, playing in a much deeper squad, and strong alternatives elsewhere.

However, that's what has happened so far in the past. But does that change his point potential in the future? Does that change that City is the most explosive team in the league and he is a primary attacker? It doesnt change that Sane is still injured and they have no other natural LW. It doesnt change that even criminally underperforming, he's the third best midfielder in the game by fantasy points.

I think its the forward looking fixture run COMBINED with the backward looking form that's swinging it for many... his fixture list reads:

liv, GER, cze, CHE, SHA(CL), new, bur, MAN, zag(CL), ars, CC(QF), LEI, wol

City being prolific scorers in & of itself isn't hugely relevant when it comes to one player... who gets more FPL points - a player who gets a 10% share of a team scoring 30 goals and winning 10 games, or a player who gets a 40% share of a team scoring 10 goals and losing 10 games?

His form is unbelievably worrying - no two ways about it - and that fixture list doesn't scream massive resounding city wins - especially without Ederson, Laporte, Kompany and Sane from last year's squad - it actually screams lots of tightly contested games, which could go either way, combined with even more of Pep's favourite pastime - rotating the absolute bejaysuz out of everything that moves

On the fixtures topic, I actually think most of the games will be pretty open.

            - LIV is a toss up, but their defence isnt really a water tight unit
            - CHE game is going to be goal fest imo, their defence is leaky
            - NEW will be tight at home for sure
            - BUR is traditionally good at home, but has been disorganized lately
            - MAN is a derby game, so who knows. Likely to be a stingy contest though
            - ARS defence is a tragedy, again could be a goalfest

So in an attacking sense, I think MCI fixtures in the Prem at least is actually half decent. Simply put, there just arent enough alternatives that offer his point potential over the season to simply say Sterling out is a easy decision.

Not too worried about his form either - as the old adage says, form is temporary, class is permanent. Wouldnt be surprised at all if Sterling ticks along in the next 5 games.

I guess i just don't look at those upcoming fixtures the same way as your good self 🙂 Especially when I see the scores Sterling has accumulated, against the weaker opposition he's faced for the last 10 weeks

I think he needs an awful lot more than 'ticking along' to justify 12.0 for another 5 weeks

Don't forget he's going to make two starts for England during the IB directly before chelsea, and after liverpool... then Newcastle and Burnley are both notorious bus parkers by their very DNA, and come directly after a champions league game which they now cant really write-off due to the draw in italy... then after that utd have the lowest XGc in the league (which is a very tenuous stat at the best of times but its still a reference point)

He's been a hugely frustrating player not or 1, or 2 or even 5, but for 10 gameweeks now

To not have Lundy by now is bad management. To have benched Lundy is also bad management. A OOP def playing against a poor Burnley defence. No excuse imo

      Nahh
Best thing about Soyuncu Lascells Rico Lundstram is we can happily bench 2 of them & play 2 alongside Taa.

Benching 5.5m Defender wouldn't feel good for tough fixtures. That's my thinking though 🙂

        I wouldn't bench a 5.5 defender though 🙂

          Ha ha
Then you might lose on some points from other cheap Defenders with nice fixtures (i did last gw thanks to a bloody 5.5m Otamendi. Soyuncu & Rico both on bench. Played CHO too 😀 )

if he hadn't hit the inside of the post at the end of the palace game there'd be a much bigger panic - slight signs that Southampton may not have been a total one of for him

Play Lundy and Lascelles/Soy. NEW (and LEI) have conceded the fewest amount (3) of goals at home.

Am looking to ship Cantwell and make things interesting for myself over the Christmas GW's - am looking at differentials in Sessegnon, Djenepo, Armstrong...

Reasoning: Good fixtures and rotation will see them getting minutes in what could be some fairly crucial games for both Spurs and Soton. Djenepo has looked particularly good in the games he's played, Sess has that record from a couple of seasons ago and is in a better team now, Armstrong has always looked decent for Soton and was really good against City last GW.

Thoughts on these? Good or Bad, I'd be interested to know - Cheers!
