Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 12?

Liverpool and Manchester City’s Sunday afternoon clash has complicated the Gameweek 12 captaincy debate.

Fantasy Premier League managers are largely steering clear of their table-topping premium options this weekend, with a greater focus on the cheaper assets in their teams.

Leicester, Chelsea and Wolves appear to be three sides at the heart of the discussion according to the polls.

As ever, we’re here to assess each candidate on both their own merits over the last four Gameweeks as well as their opponents’ defensive form.

As this article uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

It’s been tough keeping this to ourselves and making no comment at all, especially when some of the results have been leaked. Now we know for certain which player has won the captain poll.

We have saved and screenshotted the results which clearly show just one player has emerged as the winner.

It’s ………Jamie Vardy (£9.4m).

The results of this week’s captain poll

The Leicester City forward has been in exceptional form this season and currently sits top of the Golden Boot race with 10 goals.

Seven of those have come since Gameweek 7, where his form has really raced into life from a Fantasy perspective.

Since that 5-0 win over Newcastle, Vardy has averaged 9.6 points per game.

In Gameweek 12 he goes up against an Arsenal defence that has conceded an average of 1.4 goals per away game this season.

Furthermore, Vardy has scored eight times in as many Premier League starts against the Gunners.

All of that has contributed to 39.7% of voters in our poll selecting him as the best captain option for Gameweek 12.

Abraham is the second-most-popular option in the Gameweek 12 captain poll

Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) has his hands on second place with 23.4% of the vote.

This weekend, Chelsea host Crystal Palace in a match that could finally see their number one centre-forward even out the balance between his home and away form.

In the last four Gameweeks, Abraham has four attacking returns although all of those have come on the road.

Will some Fantasy managers be put off by the fact that just two of his 11 attacking returns in 2019/20 have come at Stamford Bridge? Perhaps. We recently did an analysis of this subject in a Members article.

Jiménez (left) is on course for a bronze medal in this captain poll

A long way off in third-place in the captain poll was Raúl Jiménez (£7.2m) who pulled in the support of 5.9% before hosting Aston Villa.

This Midlands rivalry contest could see plenty of goals, especially considering that Dean Smith’s men have conceded an average of 2.2 goals per away match this season.

Meanwhile, Jiménez is enjoying something of a Fantasy renaissance of late with four attacking returns (two goals, two assists), since Gameweek 8.

Despite going six league matches in a row without a goal, Teemu Pukki (£6.8m) is currently fourth in our captain poll with 3.3% of the vote.

That support is probably almost entirely influenced by the fact that Watford have conceded 23 goals this season – the third-worst.

However, it must be highlighted that Quique Sanchez Flores has been slowly improving the Hornets’ back-line recently.

In the last four matches, they have kept two clean sheets and went close to a third against Spurs.

Mané is the most fashionable asset for the captaincy from Liverpool’s next fixture

Sadio Mané (£12.0m) is the most popular asset from Liverpool and Manchester City’s encounter as far as captaincy is concerned.

2.9% of our voters have backed him for the armband and, on closer inspection, it hardly seems a strange decision to do so.

You have to go back to Gameweek 3 for the last time that Mané failed to register attacking returns in a home game.

Since then he scored 15 points against Newcastle, notched up a 12-point haul when Leicester came to Anfield and earned a penalty against Spurs in Gameweek 10 for five points.

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s defence has raised some eyebrows of late and they could also be without goalkeeper Ederson (£6.1m) on Sunday afternoon after he picked up an injury midweek.

There isn’t much backing for other cast members for this potentially title-deciding clash. 1.7% have voted for Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), 1.3% for Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), 1.1% for Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and 0.9% for Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m).

Harry Kane (£10.8m), Anthony Martial (£7.6m), Christian Pulisic (£7.3m), Todd Cantwell (£4.7m), John Lundstram (£4.8m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) are the other options on more than 1% support.

Tricky isn't it? Son is the best and most dangerous player there, so if you have Vardy and don't need the cash elsewhere, him.

Cant really compare D with the rest, since he is a good 2 million more, 3 million more than Tielemans.

Depends what you count as "form". His stats in the prem are all top, top penalty box touches, top chances created, on par goals from open play this yr with messi. Watch him and hes bang on form. City as a whole are off form a bit, but it only takes one game where he will take those chances and others put awsy their chances and he will have a massive score and people will be flocking back!

He scored a hatty in the last CL matchday, and again scored a goal midweek.

Infact, he is has the highest goal involvement in the CL till now with 5 goals and 2 assists, and backs that up with 7 goals and 1 assist in the league. Incredible numbers overall.

The 'he scores CL goals' thing is a fallacy - Atalanta are a terrible side - they shouldn't even be in the champions league, only got it by default becuase AC milan were turfed out of it. Not many teams in Serie A have conceded more goals than them already this season (Genoa, Lecce, Sampdoria, Sassuolo from memory)

I'm not giving him any credit for goals against Kosovo or Bulgaria either!

The opposition is important - there are better defences in the bottom half of the premier league than Atalanta

That they have an extremely questionable defence?
That only 4 teams in Serie A have conceded more than them?
That they shouldn't even be in the champions league but only got in by default due to AC Milan's embarassing eviction from it?
That there are literally (many!) better defences in the bottom half of Serie A than them?
That there are figuratively speaking, better defences in the bottom half of the premier league than them?
                  Any others?

Easy to forget how many hams on here talk absolute bollox. Atalanta are sitting in 5th, have scored 6 more goals than any other team in the Serie A this year and have a better goal difference than Juventus.

Lol I'm blaming that one on my Italian friend - but the actual point still stands about their defence

Why are they so bad defensively? And why are people concluding that Sterling scoring against them means anything

There are literally only 4 teams in Italy who have conceded more goals than them so they obviously are going to be a strikers wet dream to play against!

This! Atalanta recently beat udinese 7-1 and drew 2-2 away at Napoli. They also held city to a 1-1 draw midweek. There is a reason they made it to the CL through serie A qualification, maybe you need an education about continental teams? And I never mentioned anything about international goals though I think European qualifiers are no mickey mouse matches.

They have a terrible defence - only 4 teams in Serie A have conceded more

To conclude that Sterling scoring against them translates into anything is at best lazy analysis, and at worst downright dangerous

Yeah a CL hattrick and international goals are lazy analysis. xG and xA stats are also lazy? Penalty box touches, chances created, goals from open play? He is top or near top in the PL for all of those stats

There are some kak teams in the PL too which he can get a hatty against as well, and he did in GW1. Can you say the same about every attacker in the Prem? 65 points when he has been out of form, if he stays out of form all season he gets 225. So I'd say 225 is the minimum you can expect if he remains fit all season.

Depends who is your captain this week? If you think vardy cap is the way the go then do kun>vardy for free and cap. If you have abraham or happy to cap kun then wait. Personally im capping vardy so its a worthwhile transfer when you cap the incoming player

2FT but no idea what to do. Lanzini and Kane > Mane and Mousset would be my move next week.

    Pope
    VVD, Rico, Lundy
    Sterling, KDB, Lanzini, Mount
    Vardy, Kane (c), Abraham

    Button Dendo, Soy, Montoya

I'd keep Kane, fixtures are good and he's still picking up points.

I'd get rid of Lanzini and Sterling though to Mane and maybe a Villa mid - depends on budget and £ in the bank. If you could get Tielemans that's even better.

Not keen on Tielemans given I have Vardy

Ideally also want to keep Sterling, but can’t have them all

Just don't think Mousset is nailed enough to use him in a 3-4-3. If your happy with benching him them guess those transfers could work with a 4-4-2 for a couple of weeks.

The defence seems too cheap to hold up long term. Although upgrading Montoya in a week or two could solve that if possible.

Can anyone weigh in with an opinion on the defences of Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Both teams have a fairly decent run up until the new year, and will rotate nicely with my other budget defenders (whilst covering trents blank with a good fixture in gw18)

Are either of them more defensive sound than the other? Newcastle seem to either really good, or really bad...whereas Villa seem steady, but even in the 93rd minute you wouldn’t be surprised to see them concede.

Attacking potential from any of their assets? Willems seems the most likely, but is his place nailed?

....sorry that was a bit of a ramble, any thoughts welcomed and appreciated

Both about equally good. I'd be looking at Jetro or Targett.

        An honour sir!
Those were my two, along with Lascelles for nailedness.

I think I’m leaning more towards a Newcastle defender now, and then Villa ahead of GW18, possible coming in for Soyuncu as those fixtures swing and Liverpool blank.

No stats to back anything up but I’d lean to Newcastle as a tried and tested method, and someone like Lascelles who is nailed, good for bonus and gets the odd goal

        • 9 Years

You read my mind, see above!
It’s the safety first approach of Lascelles vs the potential upside of Willems attacking returns

        Just Trent.
Also have Mane, but they’re my only Liverpool players, I’ll be holding them through their blank in 18, and will probably only look at a third player for whenever the DGW happens, not long term.

How long is Matip out and is either Lovren/Gomez nailed?
When I looked at the fixture turn I was originally keen on Matip but I guess the extra funds will have to go to Robbo.

    1. HamezMace

Think Lovren is the preferred of the two.
Don’t know how long Matip is out for though, a few weeks minimum I thought

No timeline confirmed for Matip was tentatively assumed to be 6 weeks by some journos but klopp said he isnt putting any timeline on his return.
I think Lovren has looked better of the two in the last few games theyve played so i expect him to get the starts at the moment. But neither is properly nailed as yet

Hi guys, need to catch a break to end the rot. Which is the best move this week?
    1 FT, 0.2 ITB

    Pope / Button
    TAA / Tomori / Lordstram / Rico / Soy
    Salah / Sterling / KDB / Mount / Hayden
    Vardy / Abraham / Connolly

    A) Mount > Tielemans
    B) Sterling > Mane
    C) Sterling > Son (bit of a punty move)
    D) Bench Mount, Play two of Rico/Lund/Soy

    Cheers

  24. Weerman
    • 5 Years
    4 years, 4 months ago

    Ryan Button
    TAA Lundstram Soyuncu Willems Rico
    Sterling Mané KDB Mount Traoré
    Vardy (C) Abraham Connolly

    2FT's, 0.0 ITB

Do you guys think this team needs some changes? Would be the second week in a row I roll my 2 FT's.
Thinking of Sterling out, but I'm a little scared of him exploding and there would be no way to get him back in.

    Thx in advance

As someone who's been mental enough to stick with Pukki...

...surely a viable Captain option against Watford?
Liv/City options make me nervous, and my other stand out candidate would be Abraham.

    3. IRBOX ⚽

Absolutely not a captaincy option. The problem isn’t Pukki, it’s Norwich. They lack creativity and chance creation and teams have figured out how to contain Buendia who is their only shining asset in midfield. Will be interesting to see how Hernandez helps bolster their attack but no way should you be considering the armband against a Hornets team who have really tightened up defensively of late

    4. HamezMace
      • 9 Years

You know what, could be a great differential this week.
I don’t think there’s an obvious captain, so unlikely to see any captain choices haul.
      Crazier things have happened.

  27. Bubbles1985

    Heaton
    TAA Rico Lundstram Pieters
    Sterling(c) KDB Mount
    Haller Auba Vardy(vc)

    Button Cantwell Saka Kelly

    I am holding 1.8itb and 1ft.
    Saving WC until next month...

    A) Cantwell > James
    B) lose Auba to enable Tammy + Liv attack (-4)
    C) Haller > Tammy
    D) Something else?!

    Cheers!
