Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 12?

Liverpool and Manchester City’s Sunday afternoon clash has complicated the Gameweek 12 captaincy debate.

Fantasy Premier League managers are largely steering clear of their table-topping premium options this weekend, with a greater focus on the cheaper assets in their teams.

Leicester, Chelsea and Wolves appear to be three sides at the heart of the discussion according to the polls.

As ever, we’re here to assess each candidate on both their own merits over the last four Gameweeks as well as their opponents’ defensive form.

As this article uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

It’s been tough keeping this to ourselves and making no comment at all, especially when some of the results have been leaked. Now we know for certain which player has won the captain poll.

We have saved and screenshotted the results which clearly show just one player has emerged as the winner.

It’s ………Jamie Vardy (£9.4m).

The results of this week’s captain poll

The Leicester City forward has been in exceptional form this season and currently sits top of the Golden Boot race with 10 goals.

Seven of those have come since Gameweek 7, where his form has really raced into life from a Fantasy perspective.

Since that 5-0 win over Newcastle, Vardy has averaged 9.6 points per game.

In Gameweek 12 he goes up against an Arsenal defence that has conceded an average of 1.4 goals per away game this season.

Furthermore, Vardy has scored eight times in as many Premier League starts against the Gunners.

All of that has contributed to 39.7% of voters in our poll selecting him as the best captain option for Gameweek 12.

Abraham is the second-most-popular option in the Gameweek 12 captain poll

Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) has his hands on second place with 23.4% of the vote.

This weekend, Chelsea host Crystal Palace in a match that could finally see their number one centre-forward even out the balance between his home and away form.

In the last four Gameweeks, Abraham has four attacking returns although all of those have come on the road.

Will some Fantasy managers be put off by the fact that just two of his 11 attacking returns in 2019/20 have come at Stamford Bridge? Perhaps. We recently did an analysis of this subject in a Members article.

Jiménez (left) is on course for a bronze medal in this captain poll

A long way off in third-place in the captain poll was Raúl Jiménez (£7.2m) who pulled in the support of 5.9% before hosting Aston Villa.

This Midlands rivalry contest could see plenty of goals, especially considering that Dean Smith’s men have conceded an average of 2.2 goals per away match this season.

Meanwhile, Jiménez is enjoying something of a Fantasy renaissance of late with four attacking returns (two goals, two assists), since Gameweek 8.

Despite going six league matches in a row without a goal, Teemu Pukki (£6.8m) is currently fourth in our captain poll with 3.3% of the vote.

That support is probably almost entirely influenced by the fact that Watford have conceded 23 goals this season – the third-worst.

However, it must be highlighted that Quique Sanchez Flores has been slowly improving the Hornets’ back-line recently.

In the last four matches, they have kept two clean sheets and went close to a third against Spurs.

Mané is the most fashionable asset for the captaincy from Liverpool’s next fixture

Sadio Mané (£12.0m) is the most popular asset from Liverpool and Manchester City’s encounter as far as captaincy is concerned.

2.9% of our voters have backed him for the armband and, on closer inspection, it hardly seems a strange decision to do so.

You have to go back to Gameweek 3 for the last time that Mané failed to register attacking returns in a home game.

Since then he scored 15 points against Newcastle, notched up a 12-point haul when Leicester came to Anfield and earned a penalty against Spurs in Gameweek 10 for five points.

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s defence has raised some eyebrows of late and they could also be without goalkeeper Ederson (£6.1m) on Sunday afternoon after he picked up an injury midweek.

There isn’t much backing for other cast members for this potentially title-deciding clash. 1.7% have voted for Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), 1.3% for Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), 1.1% for Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and 0.9% for Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m).

Harry Kane (£10.8m), Anthony Martial (£7.6m), Christian Pulisic (£7.3m), Todd Cantwell (£4.7m), John Lundstram (£4.8m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) are the other options on more than 1% support.

Still deliberating over who to swap Otamendi out for.

My other back 4 is the familiar quartet of TAA, Lindy, Rico, Soy....and even without Ota deciding who to play/bench from these 4 has been a bit of a mare in recent GW's. (for example, I've missed both Soy hauls from the last 2 GW's having benched him). So, adding a 5th option (i.e. Tomori) is only going to add to the selection dilemma!

So, my thinking is...go with these 4 defenders and swap Ota out for a cheap as chips defender. Allows strengthening in other key areas.

    Thoughts?

I done that exact thing, Ota -> 4.0 (Could even do 3.9!)

Yep, that's what I did and brought in Reid. It burns a spot on the bench but realistically how often do we have to use the 3 bench players?

I was looking at Reid as a 3.9 option too.

Maybe get a Villa fullback, very benchable and cheap, but have a good fixture when Liverpool blank.

Guilberts an option at 4.4, but 4.3 was my ceiling (strategic, to enable a way in for Son > KDB if needed)

I couldn't bring myself to swap Ota to a cheapie (Lascelles or Saissrotation looked good) to pave the way for Lundy starting every week - I went for Chilwell as the extra ~1.5m just wasn't buying me anything extra across my front 7 - I still have another 0.5 surplus even with below XI & bench FFS

      Pope
      TAA, Robbo, Chilwell
      Salah, KDB, Martial, Mount, Maddison
      Vardy, Tammy
      (Button, Lundy, Conolly, Rico)

Might eventually buy a backup keeper with the extra 0.5, or upgrade Popey for GW15

Agree, although I'd try to find a playing defender in case they are ever needed off the bench (esp with one eye on TAA blank in a few weeks).

There's plenty of 4.4 options that look fine to me or maybe even a 4.3 from Watford.

Salah is a pretty poor pick this week imo. Not only did he have a dismal record vs other top 6 teams last season, he's in poor form.

I'm not sure city will have it in them to park a bus at anfield - with a 35 year old DM at centreback, partnered by either a shaky stones or an even shakier Ota - and especially when their flanked by fullbacks who don't know if they're even going to be playing from one week to the next i could see goals coming - Penalties sweeten the deal.

If Ederson is out its a go i think

But yeah its not a form pick at all

Are you not put off how he didn't take him off during the week? Before that game Klopp had said Salah can't do more than 65 mins with the ankle. Maybe he was proving his fitness more than anything, but I was hoping he'd get subbed late on. I captained him last week 🙁

Triple captain should definitely be captaining 3 players.

Also we need all attack chip when all attacking returns will be counted twice, all defense chip when all CS pts (mids included) will be doubled such as the park the bus chip.

            We need changes

Being the only reason also to own *any* Liverpool defenders... But a lot of critics of lower placed teams tend to gloss over defensive failings at the top because 2-1 to go 7 clear is perfectly fine and doesn't at all flag possible problems within the team's overall approach to game day.

TAA, Rico, Lordstram my back 3 this weekend... One clean sheet expected, 3 goals 😛

          it’s true.
None of the ‘big’ teams are filling me with confidence about their defensive abilities.

I suppose Allison was out for a few weeks, and City have problems with injuries at centre back too, but I was never keen on big at the back anyway.

I had Robbo and VVD last season. This year I went wide and it's Robbo and TAA. Lordstram my 3rd. Rico and Mendy recently added. I've moved away from a defensive backline and now I have 5 players capable of regular attacking returns. I feel it's why I'm green arrows mostly.

Mctom out for UTD? Probably their best midfielder.

I just cannot see myself taking any chances on UTD assets.

Europa League nothing to go by compared to the EPL. That already points to staying clear 🙂

He's been really good this season. Think that makes Martial less attractive (as an FPL option of course)

Thoughts on one of the below as a 1 week punt:

    A) Wickham & Salah to martial & Vardy (-4). WC next week

    Pope
    TAA VVD Tomori
    Sterling KDB Martial CHO
    Wilson Abraham Vardy
    (Button soyuncu lundstram Cantwell)

    B) Sterling & Wickham to Pulisic & Vardy (-4). WC next week

    Pope
    TAA VVD Tomori
    Salah KDB Pulisic CHO
    Wilson Abraham Vardy
    (Button Soyuncu Lundstram Cantwell)

    C) Move around the edges and save my WC for later

Salah 1% captaincy choice is interesting. He could be a massive differential if those figures are reflected amongst all FPL players.
    - Playing at Anfield, against the second-string City keeper and a makeshift back four.
    - Salah stats for shots per game are good.
    - On penalties.
    Could be worth a punt.

Poor form, poor record vs top 6 teams. Not for me.

I'd rather go Mane if I want to punt on that game but it's not like we're short of decent options. Vardy and Abraham both look sharper and have better fixtures.

Kane and son captainers... Brace yourselves, people tried it with Salah and then tried it with Aubam. Surely you've learnt by now 😉

Shef Utd very solid, Spurs still far from their best and away game. Very stupid to C Spurs players, agree....

    Tammy Vardy

Stupidly brought in Martial over Maddison. The 0.2m could have been useful in a transfer I had in mind. Any suggestions on how to bring in mane and robbo in this team? got 0m itb

    Pope
Taa Tomori Rico -- Lundy Lascelles
Sterling Kdb Martial Mount -- Cantwell
    Tammy Vardy Rashford

    I am 0.2m short of Sterling + Lascelles + Rashford >> Mane + Robbo + Ings grrr

Wouldn't bother with Liverpool defence double up - hasn't really worked this season I don't think.

As above Sterling to Mane or maybe even Martial & Rashford to Mane and a cheapie.
