Newcastle attack improves but viable assets still hard to find

Newcastle United 2-1 Bournemouth

Goals: DeAndre Yedlin (£4.4m), Ciaran Clark (£4.3m) | Harry Wilson (£6.0m)

Assists: Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), Federico Fernández (£4.4m) | Ryan Fraser (£7.0m)

Bonus Points: H Wilson x3, Clark x2, Aaron Ramsdale x1 (£4.6m)

Newcastle United’s latest win highlighted their drastic improvements going forward in recent weeks.

In the first 10 Gameweeks of 2019/20, not once did Steve Bruce’s side score more than one goal in a match, also blanking on four occasions.

However, in the last two matches, the Magpies have found the net a total of five times, scoring three timers at West Ham and twice against Bournemouth.

Not only was the win in London the first time Newcastle had scored more than once in a league match this season, but Gameweek 12 also represented the first time they had done so in back-to-back outings.

The last few weeks have yielded plenty of progress for the Magpies, perhaps spurred on by their 5-0 defeat to Leicester in Gameweek 7.

Steve Bruce has turned Newcastle’s fortunes around in recent weeks

Since their visit to the King Power Stadium, Newcastle have chalked up 10 points, beating Manchester United, West Ham and now Bournemouth, surging seven points clear of the relegation zone in that time.

However, Fantasy managers might be hard-pressed to find too many attacking assets worthy of inclusion in their squads just yet.

None of Newcastle’s players has netted more than two twice this season while Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) leapt from goalless to joint top-goalscorer in just two matches. The centre-back has also only recently come into the team, making his first start in Gameweek 8.

“The one thing you want is competition and Ciaran was probably questioning why there were times when I didn’t pick him in the squad. I’m leaving out people like Javier Manquillo, who’s done nothing wrong, Yoshinori Muto, who’s done nothing wrong. It’s the difficult part of it. All you can say to them is, ‘Take your chance’, and Ciaran is the prime example of it. He’s done remarkably well coming from nowhere. I’m delighted for him.” – Steve Bruce

Shelvey looks to once again be a key figure for Newcastle

Clark is level with Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) who scored in Gameweek 2 at Norwich as well as from a free-kick against West Ham last time out.

The former Swansea City man has now started two matches in a row alongside Isaac Hayden (£4.4m) in central midfield and appears to be very much back in the first-team plans.

When Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) was substituted in the 20th minute of the match, it was Shelvey who took on the captain’s armband. He may even hold onto it for Gameweek 13 if the centre-back is not back in time – he left the ground on crutches with his knee in support.

With Hayden also putting in another decent shift, it seems that Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m) and Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) may find it hard to get back in the team.

Saint-Maximin’s pace has helped Newcastle but he has struggled in front of goal

One of the most important contributing factors to Newcastle’s recent offensive improvements has been the pace of Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), although again, he does not look like a player who will be rewarded by the Fantasy system.

In the first half at St James’ Park, Bournemouth were proving difficult to break down as they were doing a fine job of reorganising their defensive shape when countered upon.

That changed towards the end of the opening period when Saint-Maximin found himself in space after a trademark sprint.

However, just as he did twice in such circumstances against West Ham, the rapid winger spurned a golden opportunity. No more than seven yards out of a sparsely defended goal, he opted to blast his shot, rattling the crossbar rather than rippling the net – another shocking miss from Saint-Maximin.

That move did open Bournemouth up a bit more and helped get Newcastle back into the game but it is very clear that Saint-Maximin is not a player to be trusted to put chances away.

Yedlin got on the end of a Saint-Maximin cross to equalise for Newcastle

That said, he may still offer some assist potential this season, setting up DeAndre Yedlin‘s (£4.4m) equaliser with a cross in the first half. Furthermore, his wayward efforts on goal could potentially lead to assists from rebounded efforts too.

Meanwhile, Miguel Almirón’s (£5.8m) wait for a first league goal of the campaign goes on although he can consider himself exceptionally unfortunate on this occasion.

On another of Saint-Maximin’s rapid forays into Bournemouth’s box, he fell to the ground as Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m) sallied forth to parry the ball. Almirón’s subsequent effort was fired straight into Saint-Maximin on the ground, in what turned out to be a fantastic save by his own player.

Either way, such was Newcastle’s desire to win this game, Bournemouth’s run of three consecutive clean sheets was brought to an end. It is worth perhaps considering that the Magpies are no longer the clean sheet fodder we once thought they were, potentially ominous for anyone holding defensive options from Aston Villa, Manchester City, Sheffield United and Southampton, their next four opponents.

Fraser was the one to benefit from Newcastle’s set piece problems, not Rico

Owners of Cherries defensive assets probably should not regret the decision to start them in Gameweek 12.

Some Diego Rico (£4.3m) owners started him hoping for returns at either end of the pitch. The expectation of a clean sheet was understandable given Newcastle’s scoring record up until this point, but there was also hope that the left-back, involved in set pieces, would benefit from their vulnerability to dead-ball situations.

After letting a West Ham goal in by that route last time out, Newcastle did indeed concede from a corner once again, Rico owners were perhaps unfortunate enough for it to be from one taken by Ryan Fraser (£7.0m) instead.

Rico still got into some great attacking positions in the North East, overlapping well with Fraser. He had a fierce shot in the first-half well-saved by Martin Dúbravka (£5.0m), which could have easily ended up in the back of the net.

Ramsdale has offered good value for Fantasy managers this season

Ramsdale also continues to offer decent value, registering a four-point haul despite conceding twice. He made seven saves and claimed one bonus point to secure second place in the scoring charts for goalkeepers so far.

After 12 Gameweeks, the Bournemouth shot-stopper has 52 points, the same as Kasper Schmeichel (£5.2m) and just three short of current leader Mat Ryan (£4.7m) on 55.

That said, the usefulness of defensive assets on the south coast could be coming to an end soon with Wolves (home), Spurs (away), Liverpool (home) and Chelsea (away) four of Bournemouth’s next five opponents.

Meanwhile, Callum Wilson‘s (£7.8m) slide continued as he went a fifth consecutive match without an attacking return.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Willems, Clark, Lascelles (Dummett 20′), Fernández, Yedlin; Saint-Maximin (Atsu 90′), Shelvey, Hayden, Almirón; Joelinton (Carroll 83′).

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico (Solanke 66′), Aké, S Cook, A Smith (Danjuma 78′); Fraser, Billing, L Cook, H Wilson (Francis 66′); J King, C Wilson.

KDB just one assist in past five with 13 points, playing deeper when Dilva plays, and City looking much less organised than usual. Son absolutely nailed, past five 18 points, Spurs desperate for points, but really dire generally. It's a much closer decision than people think, and someone like Tielemans or Martial or Pulisic could easily outscore either. Go with gut feeling!

    2FT, £3.8m ITB

    Pope - Button
TAA - Soy - Lund - Rico (Reid)
Sterling - KDB - Maddison - Mount (Donk)
    Vardy - Jimi - Abraham

    A) Sterling, KDB > Mane, Salah
    B) one of the above + Reid > Robertson
    C) one of A + Mount > Pulisic

Deciding whether to WC or not.

    Pope Heaton
    Taa Lundy Tomori Rico Lascelles
    Sterling Kdb Mount Martial Cantwell
    Tammy Vardy Rashford

    If i WC:
    - GK:can potentially save 0.5m on the 2nd keeper
    - Def: will change Lascelles > Robbo...happy with the rest
    - Mid: Will def change sterling and Cantwell. Big question is around whether Keep KDB and Mount
    - Fwd: Will have to change Rashford (to ings/jimenez) to afford Robbo

So i think i will make 5/6 transfers if I WC but main factor is whether i want to keep KDB and Mount or distribute the funds. If i dont WC, sterling > mane is the obvious move.

Okay, so Matip (injured), Dunk (suspended), Wickham (doesn't play), and Dendo (2 pointer) means that some reshuffle is needed!

What do you lads think of this -8 to sort most of the above:
Sterling, Matip, and Wickham to Maddison, Robertson, and Jimenez

Number 2 in the world took a minus 12 to get in Salah and Mane for Sterling and De Bruyne last week after doing the opposite the previous week. I'm worried about taking a minus 4. Really need to grow a pair.

At 9.5 I think we should expect more consistent returns and somehow a decent captaincy pick a la Vardy or Son.

recent blanks is actually a reason to bring him in, Liverpool will continue to score and he will be involved. depends on how your structure is, for some it´better to have another defender, and for others, double mid is easier.

Who are people going Robbo TAA benching at the back?

I'm going to be holding off for a while simply as I have Soy and Lund. Leicester fixtures are great for defence and SU are also right up there and Lund returns against weaker oppo typically. I may miss some attacking returns I guess but the cs look similar.

Holding off allows me Martial as a fifth mid and Ings as first sub.

I'd love to have Robbo and TAA but I think you're right that Lund + Soy offer so much value atm that it seems tough to make the change...

I currently usually play TAA, Lund, Soy and Tomori at the back.

If I get Robbo for Rico I may end up playing 532 some weeks... probably safer to just get Mane for Sterling.

Problem with double Liv defence is that I think we're going to bench so many Lund/Soy points (maybe Rico as well) and I hate it

Problem with double Liv mid is that I think we're going to miss lots of mid-priced option parties (Pulisic/Maddy/Martial/Mount/Tiele), assuming we're keeping a KDB/Son as well.

Maybe 2 Liv (1 def + 1 mid) is the way to go given the alternatives we have this season.

You’re right in terms of benching Soy/Lundstram points. But the upside of TAA & Robbo if Liverpool start keeping clean sheets in this run of fixtures is a risk I’m willing to take. It’s a great differential!

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Are Liverpool any likelier than Leicester to keep cs? Don't see it. If you're benching Soy that means you're paying 2 mill plus for any attacking returns from the Liverpool pair.

        1. NABIL - FPL otai
          • 11 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

Yes this is the issue. Great differential and a very well calculated risk like he said, but Lund/Soy are killin' it and there's no reason they can't keep it up, so maybe the $$ should be invested elsewhere.

    4. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

      Ha

See above. Think double Pool defence can wait until cs start rolling in. My guess is that when they come they'll come in a steady stream and a clear pattern will emerge. Until then kind fixtures for SU and Leicester make Soy and Lund great picks and allows upgrades elsewhere.

          That's the alternative

My coming choice in 14 (transfers already done this time) is Martial for Mount (3-5-2) or Robbo for Ota (4-4-2) (!). Prefer Martial currently as he has a much higher ceiling and unless he hauls against SU should remain fairly differential.

      Pope Button
      TAA Soy Lund Rico Tomori

I should have that exact side in 14 bar I have Ings ahead of Jim and cash in the bank.

Think Ings is a decent call - pretty much matching Jim after all and fantastic returns last season too when fit. He's got great fixtures and is benchable as first sub for when kdB gets his rest in 14 or 15.

We must similar TV and think cash itb is worth it for flexility going forward.

      A very smooth week

Smooth - Vardy (C), Abraham, Robertson, Maddison, Tomori, Mane, transferred out Mount and Wilson for Pulisic and Wilson

Rough - nit picking really - late goals at Wolves and Liverpool cost me 13 points and Soyuncu remained firmly on the bench

Overall 86 points (-4) and OR up from 137k to 51k

Rough - decided to roll a FT and pass up either Sterling -> Salah or Sterling, Connolly -> Maddison, Jimenez. Was duly punished.

Smooth - 68 points, up to 600k. Best OR so far this season. Onwards and upwards

      GW12 went amazingly well.
Transferred three ManCity players out to Mane, Martial and Soyoncu for -4.
Ended up on 93 points and GW rank of #811. OR jump from 64k to just outside 10k.

Smooth all the way for me this week.

Finally captained my highest scorer in Vardy.
Leicester triple up doing the business still
Great scores from Pope & Martial too.

Up to 9k and the highest I've ever been in FPL

Rough- overthought getting Soy in (surely Arsenal would score) and instead randomly got Rico. My defense in general fails again and it's now a stupid international break again.

Smooth - 72 points, Attacking returns for everyone bar City players and Ryan got 7 points despite conceding 3 times was a particular highlight (Bonus points are totally mad). Up to 399k from over a million 2 weeks ago.

Smooth: Mount to Pulisic and Wilson to Jimenez transfers netted me a sort term 12 point gain, and Abraham (c) wasn't a disaster.

Rough: nothing to grumble about except that I still haven't got Vardy.

71 point and inside the top 200k for the first time since GW3

Smooth: Brought in Vardy and captained (to complete a front 3 with Tammy & Jiminez). Tomori, Salah, Martial, Pope contributed to 86pts and 20k GW rank.
Finally a decent GW (having been in freefall) with an OR jump of 1 million and definitely back in with a chance of keeping the top 50k finishes streak going.

Rough: Benched Soyuncu as thought Arsenal would compete a little.

Smoooth; Three week’s late but better than never Vardy in for Kane and captained. No burn from Kane either. Perfect. Robbo, Ryan, Salah all chipping in and Jimenez and Abraham completes a full house upfront.

Rough; CHO no show, Grealish no show.

69 points. Green arrow and up 6k to 25.9k OR and still with wildcard and all chips to play.

Rough - TAA, Lundstram and Sterling

Smooth - Took a minus 4 to bring in Martial and Tielemans who both returned for KDB and CHO. Total GW score 88 (84) captained Vardy and had returns from Pope, Marital, Mane, Jiminez and Abraham.

Jumped from 481k to 178k and since gameweek 9 wildcard gone up by under 400K places.

I was initially going to stick with Aubamayeng over Vardy out of stubbornness but the scoutcast about mistakes made me acknowledge it was a mistake to pick Auba on my wildcard and I switched to Vardy (C) . Also did sterling to mane. 83 points, rank jump from 280k to 103k.

(not must a mistake based on hindsight - I got Auba in just before Lacazette returned and hadn't paid attention to when Lacazette might have been back from injury, and Auba's stats when playing on the wing. The lesson learned would be to pay attention to injury news, and consider the player's role in the whole team more)

Smooth; Finally nailed captain, Abraham goal, Pope returns again. Mané goal was important to keep pace with Salah owners this gw, i think his header was his only shot on goal? Son delivered promptly
Rough; seeing both Martial and Jimenez rack up good scores kind of ruined a very good week for me, and Maupay was a mistake who should have gotten points last game and for some reason managed to not score on the sole chance he had which was huge. Lundstram played over Mount, a risk that was so close to give me returns, annoyingly since so many benched him. And when he did not score it was so typical that Aurier was subbed just after SHU scored... benched last week when he got subbed just before they conceded.. got 2 bonus in the end
feels like every player i have misses just out in the bps system whereas other gets maximus, Aurier close to 3, Pereira right behind, both whom should have had an assist, Mané misses out on bps because he lost the ball 5 times last 5 minutes.. and then people get Martial on the right side of it, Jimenez as well. I know it´s not much in it but feels like this happens a lot.

      Smooth:

      - Vardy 24, Maddison 9, Ryan 7, Soyoncu 8, Salah 8, Tammy 8 - all helped me on my way to 75pts and a nice green arrow.
      - Up from 850k to 220k in the space of 3 GWs.

      Rough:

      - Double LFC defence still not working, need to lose VVD soon. Blanks from Mount, KDB, TAA, Lundstram - some of those unluckily so.

Nice to go into the IB with a big green arrow.

      SMOOTH!

      Time for a humble brag!
Had taken a -16 this week. It paid off handsomely.

Out - Alonso, Greenwood, Hayden, Dilva, Sterling, KDB
In - OConnell, Rashford, Maddison, Son, Teilemans, Martial

That is 40 points from the players transferred in and 9 from the players transferred out. (25 if -16 included)

15 point swing because of the hits. Strengthened my bench, plus dealt with the fixture swing as well.

      Took a -8
Got rid of Connolly (1) Aguero (2) Sterling (2)
Got in Vardy (12 captain so 24) Martial (10) Jimenez (9)

Overall I was 43 points up and 13 points down (with -8)

i got 71 points but i'm kicking myself that its not a lot more, i played my free hit to cancel a - 12 that i took, the hit would have worked out pretty well but since my defense ended up been a mess it would have taken more hits to fix it, hence why i used the free hit

6 of my 7 attackers, Martial, Mane Rich, Son, Tammy and Vardy, all returned points, but for some reason i also brought Pukki back in and captained him expecting a big performance from Norwich in a TV game under the lights smh 🙁

Everyone has him so there is no shooting up the leader board with him.
I think the best way to go "differential" is in defense.
          Willems/Schar Stevens Emerson Chilwell Janmaat
Can't go that wrong but a good week will send you onward and upwards.
          Lund you should keep though.

owned by below 30% so actually all his almost hauls could have been devastating for ranks.

Nice differentials, risky with fullbacks coming into more hectic times so would perhaps go with one or two cb´s

both Liverpool fullbacks got some issues defending but it comes with their positioning being so high and they run like hell for 90minutes, hence why Klopp plays the boring picks Henderson and Wijnaldum. Every time he tries to play one of Keita/ox defence are more exposed. It´s about balance, a word Guardiola now doing a search in library to find out what means-)

We are singing from the same hymn sheet.
There will be inevitable rotations this time of the year and I believe I have decently covered forwards. (McGinn my cheapest player) CHO/Pulisic All the Citeh players and many others need cover and the least expensive is doing it in defense.
My starting 3 are Soy Lund TAA and I need to upgrade Rico and Kelly. To spend an extra 2 mil on Robbo leaving me unsure of my starting 11 is a bit much for me.
Probable Chilwell, Emerson, Willems Schar Stevens Aurier are on my watchlist

    My midfield is:

    Salah - Stirling - Mount - Maddy - Martial
    Vardy - Tammy - Connolly

    A) Stirling > Mane - carry over 1FT
    B) Stirling + Connolly > Jimmy + ?
    C) Something entirely different?

Cieran Clark, is he nailed? Want to have him as 5th defender. Already have Rico+Lundstram.

Other 4,3 and lower defenders I should consider?

newcastle cb seems a bit up in the air with lascelles injured, but Lascelles and Schar has been regular and Lejeune is the best they´ve got but injured, so between Clark/Fernandez and Dummet for last spot. Taylor (BUR) and Janmaat comes to mind

Lascelles is important for Newcastle so if he is out defrnce will struggle, so i would wait a bit before i would make any transfers.

What would you with this lot?
    Pope
    Soy Lund TAA
    Martial Sterling Tielemans Salah
    Vardy Jimi Tammy

    Button Saka Diop Dunk

Initial thoughts are Saka to a playing 4.5 or Diop to Rico, any better options?

Hmmmm sterling or KDB to Maddison, then connoley. Have just enough for the KDB version. If I do Sterling gives me extra money to play with.

Just noticed that Scout Picks killed it this week. 85 with no captain points and 97 if they went Vardy!!! That's top 1k GWR

Looking at potentially wildcarding next week.

Salah and Sterling remain nailed in my team, which means I'd need to leave out one of the following:

    KDB,
    TAA,
    Robertson,
    Pulisic,
    Vardy,
    Abraham

Who would you choose and why?

TAA or Robbo. 1 is enough. We are all hoping for Pool cleanies.

Not at Palace. The game plan this season is very negative and those goals on the break just aren't happening.

But you "can't av em all" I would personally go Sterling downgrade.
Look at future captains over the next 6 weeks. Pool Chelski Leicester and 12 mil plus players must be a captain option.

            I'd be tempted too

My strong suspicion is that KdB and Sterling will miss one each in 14 and 15 or worse get 1 pointers. They'll be due a rest and this is a really busy time of season. But they'll both surely get Chelsea and that game has the whiff of a goal fest to me

      What is your defence?

TAA and Robbo start surely. I'm struggling to think of two more defenders I'd have ahead of them. I'd play Lund but Hendo will be absent.

Is it Soy? I'd fancy Brighton to score over Palace and that's not taking into account attacking returns.

Currently I have TAA, Soy, Lund, Saïss and Rico.

On a WC I'd consider dropping Saïss and Rico for Charlie Taylor and Robertson.

The added benefit of a wildcard then would be I could get a keeper for one week this week (I have Hendo + Button) then get Button back straight away...

It's a really tidy team though I'm not sure I'd blow the WC fiddling around the edges.

The template could blow apart in the next 6/7. If Chelsea hit a wall and United fire for instance then things could move very quickly.

The only way I'd WC that lot was if you fell out of love with Salah Sterling but if you've held this long then I guess you won't be moving soon.

Morning gents, entering another Int break and still just outside the 1million OR. Depressing stuff indeed.

    Team as it stands

    Pope Button
    TAA Otamendi Rico Lundstram Soyuncu
    Salah Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell
    Abraham Pukki Connolly

Held my FT in order to have 2 (1.2m ITB) during the Int break but should've pulled the trigger on Sterling & Pukki -->> Maddison & Vardy for a hit. Another poor decision by me this season.

Should I make those moves now or change it up? Otamendi to Robbo is another obvious one but don't know whether i should get Mane in with Salah.

    Thoughts appreciated

      mini wildcard territory this

Ota and Pukki you need to get rid of

then double City could be saved til after Chelsea but something like a good cheap def that you can play next week in 4-4-2, Pukki to Vardy who is only doable with downgrading Raz, hm, issue here is do you want double Pool def or do you want to beef up Cantwell/Connoly to more viable alternatives?
