Newcastle attack improves but viable assets still hard to find

Newcastle United 2-1 Bournemouth

Goals: DeAndre Yedlin (£4.4m), Ciaran Clark (£4.3m) | Harry Wilson (£6.0m)

Assists: Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), Federico Fernández (£4.4m) | Ryan Fraser (£7.0m)

Bonus Points: H Wilson x3, Clark x2, Aaron Ramsdale x1 (£4.6m)

Newcastle United’s latest win highlighted their drastic improvements going forward in recent weeks.

In the first 10 Gameweeks of 2019/20, not once did Steve Bruce’s side score more than one goal in a match, also blanking on four occasions.

However, in the last two matches, the Magpies have found the net a total of five times, scoring three timers at West Ham and twice against Bournemouth.

Not only was the win in London the first time Newcastle had scored more than once in a league match this season, but Gameweek 12 also represented the first time they had done so in back-to-back outings.

The last few weeks have yielded plenty of progress for the Magpies, perhaps spurred on by their 5-0 defeat to Leicester in Gameweek 7.

Steve Bruce has turned Newcastle’s fortunes around in recent weeks

Since their visit to the King Power Stadium, Newcastle have chalked up 10 points, beating Manchester United, West Ham and now Bournemouth, surging seven points clear of the relegation zone in that time.

However, Fantasy managers might be hard-pressed to find too many attacking assets worthy of inclusion in their squads just yet.

None of Newcastle’s players has netted more than two twice this season while Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) leapt from goalless to joint top-goalscorer in just two matches. The centre-back has also only recently come into the team, making his first start in Gameweek 8.

“The one thing you want is competition and Ciaran was probably questioning why there were times when I didn’t pick him in the squad. I’m leaving out people like Javier Manquillo, who’s done nothing wrong, Yoshinori Muto, who’s done nothing wrong. It’s the difficult part of it. All you can say to them is, ‘Take your chance’, and Ciaran is the prime example of it. He’s done remarkably well coming from nowhere. I’m delighted for him.” – Steve Bruce

Shelvey looks to once again be a key figure for Newcastle

Clark is level with Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) who scored in Gameweek 2 at Norwich as well as from a free-kick against West Ham last time out.

The former Swansea City man has now started two matches in a row alongside Isaac Hayden (£4.4m) in central midfield and appears to be very much back in the first-team plans.

When Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) was substituted in the 20th minute of the match, it was Shelvey who took on the captain’s armband. He may even hold onto it for Gameweek 13 if the centre-back is not back in time – he left the ground on crutches with his knee in support.

With Hayden also putting in another decent shift, it seems that Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m) and Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) may find it hard to get back in the team.

Saint-Maximin’s pace has helped Newcastle but he has struggled in front of goal

One of the most important contributing factors to Newcastle’s recent offensive improvements has been the pace of Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), although again, he does not look like a player who will be rewarded by the Fantasy system.

In the first half at St James’ Park, Bournemouth were proving difficult to break down as they were doing a fine job of reorganising their defensive shape when countered upon.

That changed towards the end of the opening period when Saint-Maximin found himself in space after a trademark sprint.

However, just as he did twice in such circumstances against West Ham, the rapid winger spurned a golden opportunity. No more than seven yards out of a sparsely defended goal, he opted to blast his shot, rattling the crossbar rather than rippling the net – another shocking miss from Saint-Maximin.

That move did open Bournemouth up a bit more and helped get Newcastle back into the game but it is very clear that Saint-Maximin is not a player to be trusted to put chances away.

Yedlin got on the end of a Saint-Maximin cross to equalise for Newcastle

That said, he may still offer some assist potential this season, setting up DeAndre Yedlin‘s (£4.4m) equaliser with a cross in the first half. Furthermore, his wayward efforts on goal could potentially lead to assists from rebounded efforts too.

Meanwhile, Miguel Almirón’s (£5.8m) wait for a first league goal of the campaign goes on although he can consider himself exceptionally unfortunate on this occasion.

On another of Saint-Maximin’s rapid forays into Bournemouth’s box, he fell to the ground as Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m) sallied forth to parry the ball. Almirón’s subsequent effort was fired straight into Saint-Maximin on the ground, in what turned out to be a fantastic save by his own player.

Either way, such was Newcastle’s desire to win this game, Bournemouth’s run of three consecutive clean sheets was brought to an end. It is worth perhaps considering that the Magpies are no longer the clean sheet fodder we once thought they were, potentially ominous for anyone holding defensive options from Aston Villa, Manchester City, Sheffield United and Southampton, their next four opponents.

Fraser was the one to benefit from Newcastle’s set piece problems, not Rico

Owners of Cherries defensive assets probably should not regret the decision to start them in Gameweek 12.

Some Diego Rico (£4.3m) owners started him hoping for returns at either end of the pitch. The expectation of a clean sheet was understandable given Newcastle’s scoring record up until this point, but there was also hope that the left-back, involved in set pieces, would benefit from their vulnerability to dead-ball situations.

After letting a West Ham goal in by that route last time out, Newcastle did indeed concede from a corner once again, Rico owners were perhaps unfortunate enough for it to be from one taken by Ryan Fraser (£7.0m) instead.

Rico still got into some great attacking positions in the North East, overlapping well with Fraser. He had a fierce shot in the first-half well-saved by Martin Dúbravka (£5.0m), which could have easily ended up in the back of the net.

Ramsdale has offered good value for Fantasy managers this season

Ramsdale also continues to offer decent value, registering a four-point haul despite conceding twice. He made seven saves and claimed one bonus point to secure second place in the scoring charts for goalkeepers so far.

After 12 Gameweeks, the Bournemouth shot-stopper has 52 points, the same as Kasper Schmeichel (£5.2m) and just three short of current leader Mat Ryan (£4.7m) on 55.

That said, the usefulness of defensive assets on the south coast could be coming to an end soon with Wolves (home), Spurs (away), Liverpool (home) and Chelsea (away) four of Bournemouth’s next five opponents.

Meanwhile, Callum Wilson‘s (£7.8m) slide continued as he went a fifth consecutive match without an attacking return.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Willems, Clark, Lascelles (Dummett 20′), Fernández, Yedlin; Saint-Maximin (Atsu 90′), Shelvey, Hayden, Almirón; Joelinton (Carroll 83′).

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico (Solanke 66′), Aké, S Cook, A Smith (Danjuma 78′); Fraser, Billing, L Cook, H Wilson (Francis 66′); J King, C Wilson.

Given the state of City's defence, I would say Chelsea/Leicester nearly have a better chance of catching Liverpool.

      Morning Berbs!

This was a pivotal match for us and I must say it was great to see their confidence knocked like this. I know they will be bouncing back and their defence will be shored up soon enough but by then I hope we will be away with the wind 😉

Great GW rank! I only mustered 157k

    Morning!

So I share many others’ dilemma re LIV triple ups (or not). These are my main options, would appreciate the advice on which looks best!:

    A) Boly > Robbo (FT) - the dullard/ template/ safe move
    B) Boly, Dendo > Soy, Martial/ Pulisic (-4) - ignore LIV triple up, have an awesome squad but a benching migraine!
    C) Boly, Mount, Jimi > Soy, Salah, Mousset (-8) - risky/ more exciting / less benching headache

I could also do C) in 2 parts, holding off on Boly > Soy for a week and make it a -4 this week.

    1FT 3.7itb
    Pope, McGovern
TAA , Lunds, Willems, Rico, Boly*
    Mané, KDB, Maddison, Mount, Dendo
    Vardy, Jimi, Abraham

I like all the options tbh for different reasons which is why I need advice! Currently at 296k OR (was 1.2M 2 GWs ago!)

    Cheers

      Not keen on C.

I'm all aboard the triple up on pool train, so prefer a of the options presented. But have you considered bringing Salah in as your 3rd? It'd probably mean shipping KDB though.

      1. Don Kloppeone
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

That was the point of C because I have no intention of losing KDB but prefer the idea of Salah as the 3rd over Robbo just because of the defensive headache.

If I split the move does it make it more palatable? If you break it down, there are 2 big upgrades and 1 enabling downgrade (Jimi > Mousset)

I’m more excited by the prospect of Salah as the 3rd LIV than Robbo but they are both good options.

Save it for a rainy day. Never know when a premium will hit a purple patch - dunno why people are so keen to spend all their cash when the cheapies are performing like premiums.

It’s a fair point. I think people are (justifiably) excited by LIV form combined with fixtures (despite congestion) and looking for ways to get in the triple.

I will say one thing, that the rankings are very close this year so far so risky hits are even riskier in terms of potential rank impact

Also like you looking at Robbo but my calculation is Martial has the higher ceiling and Soy/Lund/Willems will get decent points at the back for 2 mill less. Cheap defenders and high scoring mids means 3-5-2 to me as default.

I've just got Ings in as my first bench option - though might play him ahead of Mount next time. Aiming for for this front 8 from 14. Could have gone Jim but I'm wary of his schedule

          Mane KdB Maddison Puliisc Martial
          Vardy Abraham Ings

          plus 1.5 itb

Robbo can come in when Liverpool defence has turned the corner - I'm thinking it'll be fairly clear when they become a good call for cs.

            Yep I don't disagree tbh.

I'm a bit annoyed that I have 3 decent players up top now - makes it much harder to play 3-5-2!

Robertson really is a nightmare not to own (TAA owner here).

Trent's cross-field passes to him are brilliant, which leaves Robertson with so much time and space to pick out a cross.

Clean sheets will come and his attacking returns will continue. Worried about not owning him but the likes of Lundstram, Soyuncu, Rico and Janmaat are over 2 mil cheaper and are proving great value.

        CS’s are a bonus.
Their matching midfielders at their price like Mount,Pulisic,Maddison.

But they aren't matching center backs from teams on form. Leicester and Sheffield are the best defences in the league statistically so I'd MUCH rather double up on them before Pool until we see more cleans. Chelsea are clean sheet bankers at home so I'd throw Tomori into the mix as rotation fodder

That’s a fair comment. Might look at Pope > Henderson myself for the Sheff UTD double up after United game.
That’s why I’m considering 4-4-2 Robbo,TAA,Lundstrum,Soyuncu. With Rico as backup.

Rather just have 2 CHELSEA attacking options with an optional 3rd open for Pulisic but Tomori is ok if you want a CHELSEA defender.

Points on the bench, yes but I’ve had some nice points come in for non starters too.

Playing three at the back but considering Rashford to a cheap striker and playing 4-4-2 so I can upgrade Yarmolenko to a better 4th.

Robbo owner here. It's tough not owning TAA!

I think when it's all said and done they'll finish the season on similar points.

My strategy is therefore - have at least 1 of them at all times, and if if the opportunity presents itself, and it doesn't mean sacrificing too much value elsewhere in your squad, get both. At the moment there is good value in the premiums so sticking to just the one uintil things change.

      Pope
      Trent Lundstrum Robertson
      Martial Maddison Tielemans Salah

      Pope
      TAA - Lundy - Soyuncu
      Mane - Sterling - KDB - Mount
      Vardy - Abraham - Connolly

      (4.0 Cantwell Rico Tomori)
      1ft & 1.6m

      A) KDB & Connolly ➡️ Maddison & Jimenez
      B) KDB & Connolly ➡️ Martial & Jimenez
      C) KDB & Cantwell ➡️ Maddison & Martial

A leaves me with enough money to do Mount to Pulisic in GW14 if needed.

B leaves me with exact cash for the same move but I will be priced out with a Mount fall and Pulisic rise.

C means I can't do Mount to Pulisic.

      Thoughts?

      Mane KDB Maddison Mount Cantwell
      Wilson Vardy Abraham

You see the problem with these IBs is it gives the opportunity for fools such as myself to rip up a perfectly good team for the sake of something to do:

      A. Current team:
      Pope Button
      TAA Soy Lund Tomori Rico
      Sterling* Mane KDB Tielema Mount
      Vardy Abraham Connolly

0.4 ITB *to Salah next GW

      B. Super- knee-jerky WC team:
      Pope Button
      TAA Robertson Soy Lund Rico
      Mane KDB Maddy Pulisic Martial
      Vardy Abraham Mousett/Ayew

      0.1ITB

I think I know what the consensus will be, but will ask nevertheless:

      a) Cantwell > Tielemans (Mid: Salah, Mane, Mount Tielemans, Dendonk)

      or

      b) Mount > Pulisic (Mid: Salah, Mane, Pulisic Cantwell, Dendonk)

Planning on doing Mount and Deulofeu > Mane and Mousset for GW14 and with 0.1 in the bank. Can afford one price rise or drop but not more than that. If Mount lowers in price one more time, Ill lose 0,1 in selling value which will leave me in danger of not being able to afford the move should one of Mousset or Mane raise in price. How likely is Mane or Mousset raising in price until beginning of GW 14?

I prefer A. TAA/Robo are matching most mids at the same price for output and CS are looking more likely in the next 5GW’s. Salah, though has a higher ceiling is struggling to reach it.

I had him when he had BOU, SHU and CP. blanked all

CP and SHU agreed, but BOU? Traditionally not great at defending and just conceded 2 against Newcastle. And if he’s taking a space over Vardy, Abraham or Jimenez then I’d sell.

Bournemouth went on to keep 3 clean sheets after the Arsenal match, in which they only conceded 1.

Hard to look past that front three, but tough to move on a proven goalscorer with those fixtures also.

I don’t disagree. I bought him in 5 weeks ago over Vardy having looked at his fixtures. He’s this seasons Kane. We’ll be towards the top at the end of the season, but will haul when you least expect it!

Sterling for example has blanked vs Nor, Sou and Bha. Too small sample size. Jimenez blanked vs New, Wat and CP

I am definitively keeping him over these plum fixtures, (unless he blanks next two). C material and probably best differential.

Seriously flagging behind this season so I’ve taken action and made 2 early transfers already:

      Hanley* > Robbo
      Aguero > Vardy (c) -4

      Pope
      TAA Robbo Rico
      Salah(v) KDB Mount James Martial
      Vardy(c) Tammy

      Button Lundstram Connelly Tomori

      1.0 ITB

I know early transfers especially before IB are risky but outside of that do you think these changes are positive?

      Gazza
      TAA Lund Robbo
      Mane Mount KDB Maddy
      Abraham Jimenez Vardy

      Subs: Button, Rico, Willems, Hayden

      1 FT, 1.3M ITB

      If no injuries in Internationals:
      A) Mount to Richa for 1 GW punt (plays Norwich) and then comes Pulisic
      B) Just get Pulisic
      C) Save and play Rico instead of Mount next GW (4-3-3)
      D) Save and play Mount
