Wolves excel in a 3-4-3 again as owners await further Jimenez injury news

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Aston Villa

  • Goals: Ruben Neves (£5.3m), Raul Jimenez (£7.3m) | Trezeguet (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Joao Moutinho (£5.3m), Adama Traore (£5.2m) | None
  • Bonus: Jimenez, Neves x3, Trezeguet x1

Nuno Espirito Santo’s return to a 3-4-3 has helped unlock Wolverhampton Wanderers’ attacking potential in the past few months.

Since the Wolves head coach revisited the formation in earnest in Gameweek 6, the West Midlands club have shown steady improvement.

Santo’s troops are indeed unbeaten in the top flight since that 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, a run that stretches back seven league games.

They have also scored in every match over that period.

It’s not quite as simplistic as basic formation choices, of course: Wolves’ fixture schedule from Gameweeks 1 to 5 was tricky and they faced some of the division’s meanest defences during that run.

Since then, they have encountered rather more obliging backlines in the form of Aston Villa, Arsenal and Watford.

Still, there has been more than just circumstantial evidence to back up the increased goal threat.

Take the fixture against Newcastle in Gameweek 10: three shots on goal in a 3-5-2 in the opening 45 minutes and then ten attempts after the break when a 3-4-3 was deployed.

There were similar second-half improvements in matches against Southampton and Slovan Bratislava in October, with Santo again turning to a 3-4-3 at the interval.

Sunday’s victory over Aston Villa continued the trend, with the hosts racking up 17 shots at Molineux, taking their total to 51 since the second half kicked off at St. James’ Park a fortnight ago.

Yes, Villa were without key figures such as Tom Heaton (£4.5m), Bjorn Engels (£4.5m) and Jack Grealish (£5.9m).

And yes, Dean Smith’s side have made a habit of conceding a lot of chances this season.

But this was one of Wolves’ best offensive performances of 2019/20, with the narrow scoreline not reflecting their total dominance.

It had looked like being a frustrating afternoon for the increasing number of Fantasy managers who own Raul Jimenez (£7.3m), who had sliced wide on four occasions before latching onto Adama Traore‘s (£5.2m) cut-back on 83 minutes to put Wolves 2-0 up and effectively kill the game.

Diogo Jota‘s (£6.1m) owners didn’t experience such late-in-the-day joy.

The Portuguese striker blanked for the ninth time in ten appearances and collected a yellow card to boot but there were a handful of decent openings for the mid-price FPL forward, who nodded straight at Orjan Nyland (£4.3m) from close range and saw the substitute Villa keeper smother another effort from inside the six-yard box.

The man who replaced Jota late on, Pedro Neto (£5.0m), also fired wide when well-placed in stoppage time.

Santo hailed his side’s display but also bemoaned the profligacy in front of goal, saying:

We played very, very good – very, very well. We dominated the game, especially in the first half. We created a lot of problems for Villa, a lot of chances.

When you produce so many things, you must finish the actions. This what we’re going to analyse now as we broke a lot of times and we had chances, but some we didn’t finish.

Part of the reason why a 3-4-3 has been so successful has been the pairing of Traore with Matt Doherty (£6.0m) down the right flank.

The pair again wreaked havoc down the wing against Villa, with Traore crashing a shot against the bar in the second half and Doherty repeatedly getting into promising positions in the opposition area on the ‘underlap’ – much as he did in 2018/19.

Santo said of Traore’s performance:

He’s playing very well. He’s sticking to his tasks and helping the team. He’s unique, he gives you these moments that only he can produce.

One of the by-products of this move to a 3-4-3 has been the slightly more advanced role that Ruben Neves (£5.3m) is now occupying.

Previously the anchoring midfielder of a 3-5-2, Neves is now playing further forward alongside Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) and the two compatriots combined for Wolves’ opening goal – albeit from a free-kick, rather than from open play.

Santo said ahead of Sunday’s game:

This is a competition in which we have to adapt and find solutions and one of those was to start playing a different way. We need solutions in this situation and one of them is Ruben (more advanced) alongside Joao.

Some perspective has to be provided here, however: Neves and Moutinho still only had one penalty box touch between them this weekend.

Neves, like teammate Romain Saiss (£4.4m) is also now just one booking away from a one-match ban.

The international break now gives some Wolves’ assets a welcome breather following their brutal schedule of the past three months.

Traore will be one of the ones staying at home but – apparently – only because of injury.

The pacy winger is at the centre of a tussle between Mali and Spain on the international stage and received his maiden call-up by the latter this weekend, only to subsequently pull out.

Traore said yesterday:

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the call of the national team because of an injury in the game we played this Sunday against Aston Villa.

I am sorry I cannot be in this call-up, but I will continue working to be in the best possible way for the next list, God willing.

I want to thank for the confidence that the coach has placed in me. I will have medical tests at my club, Wolverhampton, to know the extent of the injury.

It remains to be seen if Jimenez is also spared international duty after the Mexican striker limped from the pitch on Sunday, with an ice pack swiftly applied to his leg on the home bench.

Santo said after full-time:

We have to assess Raul now, the medical department will assess him.

Villa were also blighted by injury on Sunday, with Heaton (who has now pulled out of the England squad), Engels and Grealish failing to recover ahead of kick-off.

Jed Steer‘s (£4.4m) Premier League debut then lasted all of eight minutes before he was substituted with an Achilles injury, while Matt Targett (£4.4m) suffered a blow to the head and was also replaced after complaining of blurred vision.

Smith said after full-time:

Tom Heaton’s been struggling with a calf so I knew he was going to pull out of the game. Jack was always 50/50. Bjorn (hip) came to see me yesterday morning so I always knew we were struggling with that.

In the game, you get Jed Steer going down after three minutes on his first Premier League start with an Achilles injury.

What the international period will do will enable them to be fit for the Newcastle game. I’m not too sure about Jed Steer, I’ll wait for the prognosis on his Achilles injury.

Smith was critical of his players’ first-half performance especially and refused to blame injuries, saying:

It still doesn’t affect your desire to go and win a header, a tackle, a second ball and just help your teammates out and I didn’t think we did that first half.

That’s as bad a first 45 minutes I’ve had since Wigan away last year. Very poor, didn’t start.

It appeared the game was bigger for them than it was for us, we didn’t win any balls, duels, didn’t pass it well. The best thing I got out of the first half was it was only 1-0 at half-time.

Indeed, Ezri Konsa (£4.3m) performed well enough in Engels’ stead and Nyland didn’t do a lot wrong between the sticks.

Instead, there were off-days from some of Villa’s regulars, with the three central midfielders – including John McGinn (£5.8m) – ineffective and hot-and-cold wide players Trezeguet (£5.2m) and Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) very much towards the chilly end of the scale at Molineux.

It was Trezeguet who snatched Villa’s consolation in stoppage time from a corner-kick situation.

After their excellent display against Liverpool, we can probably forgive Villa’s assets for this one below-par performance – although Fantasy interest may be lukewarm until the fixtures really turn favourable in mid-December.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Rui Patricio; Dendoncker, Coady, Saiss; Doherty, Neves (Bennett 85′) Moutinho, Jonny; Traore, Jimenez (Cutrone 90′), Jota (Pedro Neto 83′).

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Steer (Nyland 8′); Guilbert, Konsa, Mings, Targett (Taylor 45′); McGinn, Nakamba (Lansbury 69′), Douglas Luiz; El Ghazi, Wesley, Trezeguet.

Mousset is a reasonable bench option no more really. Will be on a similar set up but with Ings instead. A decent first bench is needed as KdB will get a rest soon for SU or Burnley probably.

Expensive? Look at his track record over the last 30 games or so - 9.5 or whatever he is is cheap as chips.

KdB will come again too in my view and offers great value at 10.5 - City and Leicester have goals aplenty in them and they'll be at the heart of it. Getting the pair of them even now for 20 mill is a steal more especially when you add in all the Chelsea attack and Martial and overperforming cheap defence.

Salah and Sterling will likely come again but they need to outperform their form last season by some distance while there is such range of value options elsewhere.

Morning DZ. On a WC, which set of players you would go for

    A) Tomori, Martial
    B) TAA, Trossard (or someone else under 6.5)

Also is KDB enough coverage for City? Can't afford Sterling with Mane, and a decent strikeforce. Or forget City altogether and get Son instead?

I'd keep KDB, with Rodri back he'll play attacking Midfield again now.
Re players choice i prefer B with McGinn/Grealish/Barnes till gw 16 & then Trossard when the fixtures improve for Brighton

      1. Eze Really?

I actually think fixtures won't affect Trossard.
Such a small sample size but his movement is off the charts.
I was thinking McGinn to Trossard in 2 weeks time.

          Hello 🙂
You're probably right. Have you watched him against at City this season start (3rd gw i guess)
          He was relentless !

I'm going to play the odds though with fixtures. Also, have Tielemans in my team as placeholder/punt till gw 17 & then will swap with Trossard in gw 18.
His Rotation with Gross is problematic though. Will have to monitor the situation before jumping in. Sold CHO this GW so circumspect about Rotation risk player's

          1. Eze Really?
            • 9 Years
            4 years, 5 months ago

Correct plan but when my gut starts working I will regret not getting Trossard, especially when I have been shouting his name from the tree tops. I can see Potter prefers Trossard over Gross. (Work rate alone). Also McGinn has Grealish breating down his neck when getting forward.
I have a mini league contestant who is lying second with Trossard McGinn Ings Mount all in his side. Allows him to carry 2 Pool defenders comfortably.

Tiny sample size and we're still learning about Potter.

Think McGinn is still just ahead on basis of absolute nailedness and he has returned against 3 of the top 6 so far. Really underrated as an asset and his price doesn't begin to reflect his returns. Can see him ticking over at the same rate until season's end.

The other in the same bracket is Ings. I've gone that way as he has a track record now from last season where he returned at a similar rate to this in a struggling side. Class act if he remains fit and great value.

The other one in the same bracket for me is Jota. Different case as he has clearly really underperformed but he has the biggest upside of them all. Suspect that all those on Jim will start to wonder about their choice soon.

With KDB Mane Mount and Martial, I have no choice but Mings. I agree with what you say and have him since GW1. Jota hit and miss. Ings is good if he stays fit. I suppose it is a Trossard/McGinn choice and it will be made soon.

        Cheers Amey.

Yes I really want TAA but have to sacrifice Martial for him, which I think I might have to. Leaning towards keeping KDB too. Another option is forget TAA and Martial and get Sterling for KDB and Tomori and a McGinn/Grealish as you suggested for the other slot, but don't like that much sacrifice.

Had a look at your team how about Sterling to Mane instead.
      I will probably hold Sterling.
How else do you get someone like Pulisic
Without downgrading Sterling as I wouldn’t want to lose KDB but then you got a chunk of change and what do you do with it?
Easier option is Tomori and you are not risking a triple attack.

        Ta
Looking at the fixtures from 14 for 4 game weeks , LEI, SOU, CHE and LIV all have 3 out of 4 fixtures at home.
All of those fixtures are blue...points all over the place here.

Agree I can't go into BHA EVE bou WAT without a Liv attacker. And downgrading Sterling would leave a huge chunk of money which wouldn't be much use. But even if I get Tomori - I'd have to rotate him with TAA, Soy and Lundy who all have great fixtures

    Pool Lei Che and City
GW18 is a nightmare it’s not just the pool blank the other fixtures are dire too.
If are going to need some huge hauls over the next 5 weeks to compensate for what could be a massacare of a GW in 18

The other fixtures concern me more than the Pool/Hammers blank. Spurs v Chelski and Citeh v Leicester will mean I have 5 players wrapped up in those games as well as 3 Pool not playing.
The only light is everyone is a similar boat. I am keeping KDB for this very reason being fixture proof IMO.

Salah ankle issue is a worrying sign for owners right?

Klopp maybe extra cautious with him and manage his minutes by taking him off early when leading or giving him the odd rest in buxy schedule

Hence i think Mane TAA Robbo is the best liverpool trio to own for their lovely run of fixtures

    1. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years

There are a few teams with good fixtures and the likes of Leicester and Chelsea defensive assets with Lund might not require 2 Pool defenders.

they dont offer the attacking threat as TAA + Robbo does. TAA + Robbo are basically wingers classified as wingbacks and are oncourse for another season of 10+ assists

Obviously not. We all know this. But:
They have scored well but nowhere near expected potential.
We are all waiting for Pool clean sheets and it has cost us dear.
A large proportion of players had 2 Pool defenders in the beginning and soon changed. What has made it necessary to change back?
A 7 mil defender should be getting the same points as Mids and Forwards in the same bracket. There are players below 7 that are as good.
Not saying don't double up but wanting to play Lund Soy Tomori etc will create headaches.

Pound for pound there is little difference between Tieleman and Maddison, and Pulisic only been playing well a few weeks. I think Tieleman shouldn't be a worry for you. It's Sterling and KDB who are the biggest concern, as their price means you can't afford a third forward and have to play four at the back every week. City seem to be having a bit of a meltdown at the moment, and I would keep a careful eye on that after the international break. Hopefully for you I am being over sensitive to indicators of discontent there, but overnight news about Sterling at the England camp adds to concern.

If you cannot afford to do either

    Robertson/TAA, Salah & Mane

    or

    Robertson, TAA, Salah/Mané

    is

Robertson, Mane and Firmino a good alternative

VAR, as quoted from BBC: “Asked how he would rate the introduction of VAR out of 10, Swarbrick, the Premier League referees' lead on VAR, told BBC Sport: "I'd give us around about seven-ish.”. 🙂

He seemed to think seven was a really good score! The poor communication between the two referees is the problem. The classic for that was Cho done for diving after penalty awarded against Burnley. VAR ref watched a dozen times in slow motion for evidence of a trip, whereas ref gave it for a push, which VAR ref didn't even look at.

        Agreed

Think the key is current set up. Mount CHO and Puli are all babies really. Lampard has said he's ben surprised by playing Mount so much. I think it quite plausible Kova Kante and Jorgino will form a central axis as the season develops. That could lead to a formation change in attack.

I think CHO carries the ball better and probably has better crossing/assist ability (similar to Willian) and Pulisic looks to get into dangerous positions and score goals (almost like a 2nd striker, someone like what sterling at his best does). Really like him in my team.

CHO only 18 years old. Minutes being managed. So for this type of fantasy game he is unlikely to be a great choice. I really must transfer him out soon! Seriously there aren't many teenagers who play regularly well week after week. Look at all the Greenwood, Connolly, Nketiah, Foden Solanke enthusiasms on here which turn out to be damp squibs for example.
