Southampton’s ongoing full-back problems bode well for FPL wingers

Southampton 1-2 Everton

Goals: Danny Ings (£6.0m) | Tom Davies (£5.3m), Richarlison (£7.9m)

Assists: Sofiane Boufal (£5.5m) | Mason Holgate (£4.4m), Djibril Sidibé (£5.3m)

Bonus Points: Davies x3, Richarlison x3, Holgate x1, Ings x1

Southampton’s problems at full-back continue to boost the attacking potential of their opponents.

This problem appears to be especially causing the Saints problems at home, where they are yet to win a league match since

After six outings at St Mary’s this season, Southampton have drawn once and lost the other five, scoring five goals and conceding 21.

Obviously, that goals conceded column is skewed by the nine they shipped to Leicester but this was yet another encounter where Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men were torn to pieces in wide areas due to questionable tactical decisions.

Hasenhüttl still hasn’t solved his full-back problems this season

The Gameweek 6 hosting of Bournemouth saw Josh King (£6.3m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m) expose left-footed centre-back Kevin Danso (£4.3m) when he was deployed at right-back.

When Chelsea came to Hampshire in Gameweek 8, four different wide players emerged with an assist to their name, specifically Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.8m), Willian (£7.1m), Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.4m).

Of course, we all remember what Southampton’s defence did for Leicester in Gameweek 10, Ben Chilwell (£5.7m) quadrupling his total of attacking returns for the season in one 90-minute session and Harvey Barnes (£5.9m) spent the whole evening unmarked.

Well, it was exactly the same story on Saturday afternoon as yet another one of Hasenhüttl’s failed experiments at full-back fell flat on its face.

Cédric Soares was deployed out of position before being hauled off at half-time

This time, he played right-footed Cédric Soares (£4.8m) at left wing-back in a 3-4-2-1 system and stationed attacking midfield Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) as the right wing-back.

That allowed Richarlison (£7.9m) and Theo Walcott (£6.2m) complete freedom to terrorise Southampton’s back-three, who were once again horrendously exposed by incapable and out-of-position wing-backs.

While it was Southampton’s right that had the biggest problems in the 9-0 defeat to Leicester, it was their left, staffed by Cédric, that was most susceptible in Gameweek 12.

That saw Walcott get the most joy, getting past the wing-back too easily and further exposing Jannik Vestergaard‘s (£5.0m) distinct lack of pace.

Thankfully for Southampton, Everton have hardly been in the most clinical form in front of goal this season, so in the end, they actually only exploited the home side’s defensive issues once, Tom Davies‘ (£5.3m) opening goal coming from a corner.

Southampton’s chances of a clean sheet in any of their upcoming home matches seem very low

However, Fantasy managers should probably keep an eye on full-backs or wingers who face Southampton in the coming weeks, especially at home where their problems in wide areas are more pronounced.

Over the next six Gameweeks, the Saints host Watford, Norwich and West Ham, which could see Daryl Janmaat (£4.3m), Jose Holebas (£4.7m), Onel Hernández (£5.3m), Emi Buendía (£6.0m), Todd Cantwell (£4.7m), Robert Snodgrass (£5.2m) or Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) enjoy their visits to St. Mary’s.

Furthermore, if those assets can provide decent delivery in those matches then the likes of Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m), Teemu Pukki (£6.7m) and Sébastien Haller (£7.3m) should be present with plenty of decent chances.

Watford forward Deulofeu is perhaps the strongest consider from that bunch. After a 12-point haul at Norwich in Gameweek 12, he went some way to reminding Fantasy managers that his speciality appears to be double-figure hauls away to relegation-threatened clubs. After all, a large proportion of his 2018/19 points came in large away wins at Huddersfield and Cardiff.

Sofiane Boufal did make a difference for Southampton after coming on

It must be said that Hasenhüttl did manage to alleviate some pressure on his defence by replacing Cédric with attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal (£5.5m) at half-time.

He was officially stationed in a central location, with Moussa Djenepo (£5.2m) tasked with providing width on the left.

Boufal had an immediate impact on the Saints, his powerful shot from range representing their first effort on goal in the whole match.

It was the Moroccan international who provided the assist for Southampton’s equaliser too.

Following a corner, he took advantage of Morgan Schneiderlin (£4.4m) having to drop into left-back, pushing past him and getting around the back to square the ball for Danny Ings (£6.0m), who netted a simple tap-in.

“The first half was horrible. No-one wanted the ball any more. You could feel the lack of self-confidence. It took us until the second half to get positive body language. The second half was OK. We went very offensive and it gave us a little more quality but you expose the defence and the goal killed us. It is not a nice situation. I can guarantee the players try to fight to win games. At the moment we are not good enough.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

Danny Ings scored a much-needed goal for Southampton against Everton

That was Ings’ first goal since the Gameweek 9 trip to Wolves, although his two goals in the last four Gameweeks is the joint-highest of any striker priced at £6.0m or below. That said, while Sheffield United’s Lys Mousset (£5.0m) is also on two goals, he has three assists to Ings’ zero.

Despite getting Everton on the back-foot for the first time, Hasenhüttl’s tactical changes still did not plug the gaps at full-back.

Cédric’s departure at half-time ensured that Southampton spent the entirety of the second period without a recognised full-back on the pitch.

It should be no surprise then that Everton’s winning goal was a direct result of this problem.

Richarlison exposed Southampton’s problems at full-back in Gameweek 12

Right-back Djibril Sidibé (£5.3m), whose four consecutive starts suggest he has now claimed the starting berth from Seamus Coleman (£5.4m), powered up his side of the pitch and his looping cross to the far-post was poked in by an unmarked Richarlison.

Interest in Everton assets had decreased in recent weeks but they probably only have one more week of viability for Fantasy managers.

They host Norwich in Gameweek 13 which could be high-scoring one for options such as Richarlison, although he is probably the only attacking player who is completely nailed-on to start.

Sigurdsson was back in the Everton team at number 10, Alex Iwobi dropping to the bench

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) was back in the team in Gameweek 12 but it was just his third start in the last five Gameweeks. Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi (£5.7m) was benched at Southampton and while Walcott has started each of the last four, in none of those has he completed 90 minutes.

However, once a Goodison Park meeting with the Canaries is out of the way, Everton embark on a truly horrendous fixture schedule.

Between Gameweeks 14 and 18 they face Leicester (away), Liverpool (away), Chelsea (home), Manchester United (away) and Arsenal (home).

Southampton XI (3-4-2-1): McCarthy; Vestergaard, J Stephens, Bednarek; Cédric (Boufal 46′), Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong (Obafemi 90+1′); Djenepo, Redmond (Adams 81′); Ings.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Holgate, Mina, Sidibé; Schneiderlin, T Davies; Richarlison (Keane 89′), Sigurdsson, Walcott (Iwobi 74′); Tosun (Calvert-Lewin 74′).

Why you still want Sterling? Think I just really want to have Vardy and Robbo and Sterling is my enabler for that move.

Yeah it will probabily be a bench headache but it are all cheap players who are getting some points so I think it's a plus

I still found him really dangerous against Liverpool and he can bag a hat trick any given GW. Last year I sold him and then bought him again all year long and he always punished me so I think I prefer to keep him. But that's a personal preference obv.

    On WC

If you cannot afford to do either

    Robertson/TAA, Salah & Mane

    or

    Robertson, TAA, Salah/Mané

    as a Liverpool triple up

    is

Robertson, Mane and Firmino a good alternative

    Any ideas would be welcomed

He better perform or you are giving the majority team value as their alternative is Vardy or cheaper and the 3rd Pool player others have is probably outscoring him too.

Yeah I've had him all season. Was brilliant for a while but has faded badly. I will give him till their blank gameweek, injuries permitting and then reassess. But yeah you're right I've lost a lot of points not going for vardy or Jimenez or Abraham. Actually still got a third Liverpool spot though. Was thinking lovren/matip. See how that injury situation develops.

He's been a tad unfortunate and a little wasteful tbh.
However, I strongly feel his points total at present are wholly unflattering and confidently expect him to rise in the striker rankings before too long.

Yeah I agree mate. I've got Mané too and the amount of times I've seen those two combining and just missing out is crazy. Villa offside goal ofc. Quite streaky I think too so one goal could bring about plenty more (I hope).

After my potentially season-defining/ ending comedy fail last night (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2019/11/12/martial-having-a-positive-impact-on-uniteds-other-fpl-attacking-assets/?hc_page=2&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_21171945) I am fully expecting this to happen before/ during GW13:
    - Salah is declared out with an aggravated ankle issue
    - Robbo plays and mega hauls
    - KDB smashes CHE to pieces
    - Soy own goal

Should the universe instead be smiling on me, here is the team that will be taking me to glory:

          My team:

          Pope - Button
          TAA - Soyuncu - Rico - Lundstram - Kelly
          Sterling - Salah - Maddison - Cantwell - [Mount]
          Vardy - Connoly - [King]

Is [Mount + King] to [Martial + Abraham] for a hit a reasonable move?
Or just do [King] to [Abraham] and upgrade somewhere else?

Need help here; I have 2 FT but 0.1 short on my transfers

Sterling + Conolly to Son + Jimenez

          How can I find 0.1 here;

          Schmeichel (Button)
          TAA | Lund | Rico | Tomori | Janmaat
          Sterling | Mount | Mane | KDB | Maddison
          Rashford | Conolly | Tammy

          Thanks!

Who's not going to play? Got to have 3 defenders and I assume with Rashford/Tammy/Jimenez you are not going to drop one of those so the midfielder who sits on the bench is where you get your 0.1 from.

Really wanting to have both TAA and Robo.

Would you consider - Auba + Tomori - Laca + Robertson for -4?

Up front might be sideways, but huge upgrade in the back

appreciate that, they get almost regular returns without CS, imagine a few games run without conceding + the attacking return. If I had 2 FTs, would do it straight away, just wanted to check whether the impatience is regarded worthwhile for -4 😉

          Pope Button
          TAA Chilwell Lundstram Lowton Kelly
          Mane KDB Maddison Mount Cantwell
          Wilson Vardy Abraham

          1FT / 1.9ITB

          This week : Lowton + Wilson --> Robbo + Ings (-4pts)

Don't think that's much of an issue considering so many are outscoring them for a lot less.

Sorry, but there's just too many great options right now. My rank has been absolutely battered by hanging on to players like Salah and Sterling. Keep if you want. I'm going to be much more aggressive now, much like my moves from last week. Got me shed ton of points

I found it slightly reassuring that an 'on his way back from injury' Salah actually outscored Mane & Sterling last week too

Sterling has been a bit of a disaster zone though - 41 points last 10 GW's to Salah's 57, again despite Salah's injury and despite Sterling having fixtures such as (BHA, WAT, WOL, AVL, SOU, nor, bou) in that run

Martial needs to be on that list also imo

That's why my midfield is Salah, KDB, Maddison, Martial, Mount

Yeah in my very humble opinion Jimmy comes unfortunately 4th in the competition between:

                  - Jimmy
                  - Martial
                  - Maddison
                  - Mount/Pulisic

No shame in coming last out of that bunch though - and when the Martial injury comes I'd intend to replace him with a third chelsea attacker (Mount/Pulisic) rather than a third striker (Jimmy/Rashford)

There's only one way to play this game imo & its to back yourself

At the end of the day backing yourself and being wrong is A LOT less painful than going against yourself and being wrong

This totally applies if you fancy Jimmy over one of Martial / Maddison / Mount-Pulisic and vie-versa

I’m in need for some advice here.

I am already on a -4 after some early transfers in frustration. I was planning to WC but now I’m having second thoughts. Partly because I’ve had Auba for so long and it’s typical if he hauls now after I transfer him out. And partly because I don’t know how many transfers I would end up doing since so many players are must haves. My team:

            Heaton
            TAA Soy Lund Kelly Williams
            Mane KDB Maddi Mount Cantwell
            Auba Vardy Tammy

            Would you wildcard this(given I’m
            Already on -4)?

Would probably switch Auba to Salah and change goalkeeper as my main moves.

            Heaton (Button)
            TAA Robbo Soy Rico (Lowton)
            Salah Sterling KDB Barnes (Cantwell)
            C.Wilson Abraham

0.4m itb, 1 FT, WC available

Had planned to save this week, do one LIV fullback + C.Wilson to a 5.5m + Vardy, (then Sterling to Salah the week after if all goes well). With Heaton & Robbo now doubts & Vardy killing me each week, I'm not so sure. Any suggestion?

Wouldn't lose any Liv to get Vardy. Raheem or KDB out + Wilson to Vardy & Martial or Madds seems to be popular (& I did something similar last week).

Thanks. Another reason I'm thinking of losing one is so I can go for Salah + Mane in this run of fixtures.

Not a medical man, but I think Robbo injury might be timed just right, seems like he reported for duty (so not so bad) and was sent back to Anfield (bad enough). Salah exactly the same.

Vardy "essential" since Rogers took over.

Just don't think I have enough firepower in midfield with City's inconsistency & there's a few nice budget defenders that have emerged recently. I agree about Vardy, painful not having him but I may just hold out one more week.

As Rupert has said, plenty of cheper mid options who are flying at the moment.

Of all the times to lose Liverpool players, now is a bit bizarre.
Just get rid of City players asap.

I'd wait it out, certainly wouldn't want to spend that much on Salah these days.

Hmm thanks. So you'd save this week & do those move next week, or take a hit for them now?

Who makes the most points in the next 4 gws:

            A) Jimenez
            B) Robertson
            C) Other defender or forward below the same price-level

Hmm, that's a difficult one. I'm on WC, so both an option

              B

On WC you get naturally both, downgrade elsewhere. There is a better way, since those names are pretty easy first picks with TAA and Tammy.

            Pope
            Robertson Trent Lundstrum
            Salah Maddison Tielemans Martial
            VardyC Jiminez Abraham

            Mount Lascelles Mings

Dropped all city and not overly bothered tbh

            Anyone looking at Jota?

Posting similar stats to Jimmy for 1.2 less or so. Could be a good option if budget doesn't stretch to Jim?

Had him GW1, seemed by far best option at 6.5 at the time (wasn't the case). Rise of Traore having an impact on him?
If he turns the corner (and picked up mid-season last year) then would deffo consider.

He's been really unlucky not to return past couple of weeks, good option I think.

            "Ditch Sterling or KdB?"

Sometimes there are decisions to be made. Usually the rule called "KISS" cannot be used. Yet, the decision whether to ditch the more expensive asset or the one who has less points, has rarely been this easy 😉
