Why I want to sign Sadio Mané before it’s too late

At 5pm last Saturday, I was on the cusp of being hit with a dark red arrow.

Four of my five players had blanked and I was going into Sunday without highly-owned players such as Kevin de Bruyne (40%), Mohamed Salah (27%) or Sadio Mané (35%) which put me at risk of my overall rank plummeting further.

Thankfully my trust in Jamie Vardy’s (£9.6m) form paid off with his 24 points as captain, as well as an unexpected clean sheet for Kasper Schmeichel (£5.2m).

This was further boosted with Anthony Martial’s (£7.7m) double-digit haul on Sunday.

How I got on in Gameweek 12

It was just a shame that my Manchester City coverage of Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) failed me. Then again the duo have a dire record as visiting players at Anfield so I shouldn’t have expected much.

Liverpool’s late loss of a clean sheet cost me four points with my ownership of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) but it probably was for the best as I ended up unpunished by anyone with a defensive double-up.

Previously, I had sold Salah and Mason Greenwood (£4.3m) for Vardy and Martial.

I felt that this made perfect sense as I was effectively obtaining two attacking players for the price of one.

I had numerous concerns last weekend with my squad and could have easily used a free transfer or taken a hit.

Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) could have swiftly been switched out for Youri Tielemans (£6.6m) with my cash in the bank.

Mané has really caught my eye recently

But ultimately I wanted the in-form, Mané. I should have bought him weeks ago. Aguero has demonstrated that he is a rotation risk too often this season, despite scoring nine Premier League goals thus far. However, only one since Gameweek 6 weakens his appeal significantly.

An easy move for me would be to sell Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) and the Argentina international for Mané and Aaron Connolly (£4.7m) without taking a hit.

But I would still be left with Yarmolenko.

Whether I make one, two or three transfers during the international break, I almost certainly need to crowbar in Mané. I simply have no choice but to do so.

Another option could be to sell my two attacking Manchester City assets for Salah and Mané if I wanted to put all of my eggs in one title-race basket.

However, after now trailing Liverpool by nine points, Pep Guardiola will be more motivated than ever before to convert their decline with a winning spree, even if they are facing Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in their next five Premier League games.

Owning Jamie Vardy has had a big impact on my season in recent weeks

I managed to end Gameweek 12 with a third consecutive green arrow and my best overall rank since the last week of August.

I finally have some momentum on my side with the international break providing me with much needed time to plan ahead for the upcoming winter fixture rush.

The 62 points I picked in Gameweek 12 seems modest in comparison to a lot of seasoned FPL managers but I do feel content with the 193 points I’ve amassed over the last three rounds.

It wasn’t long ago that I was ranked as low as 2.7 million despite having a more than reasonable start – so I’m very happy with my recent progress.

I’ve also surprised myself by being more cautious with my transfers this season with only two hits taken to date – each resulting in a red arrow.

My aim now is to make incremental gains with safe transfers and hope that my armband picks can deliver on a more regular basis.

December will no doubt be filled with variables in FPL, as it always is, so I need to make the most of my newfound traction and hope that I can continue my run of green arrows.

Maybe you can help me? I have been trying to get Midfield Goal threat stats on the currently performing midfielders for the past 6 weeks.
The list of midfielders come up without any CHE players. I have tried this several times and don't know why this happens.
      Any idea? Thanks!

That makes him more nailed alright but Lascellas out is bad news for the Toon defense.

His opinions are probably ok but FPL General is a really poor writer. A bunch of short paragraphs with little relevance to each other doesnt make an article.

I totally blame FFS. FPL managers are not writers. A walkthrough of a bunch of ideas about who you could buy or who you could sell to do some things you're considering is just a feature length version of any one of 20 trillion posts made in these comment threads. It really has no relevance whatsoever to the FPL community as a whole. The entire article is basically a headline without an answer

Yea all headlines are written by people who try to maximize google hits. Its a science at this point... Thats why articles arent called "Frisking the fixtures" and "Prematch Preamble" etc anymore.

take it for what it is, a story from an experienced player in a certain state, in a certain part of the season, issues and problems that we all recognize in our own troubles and decisions

It's a totally acceptable differential if

      1. VvD starts racking up points
      2. Another premium mid or forward starts racking up the points

Both quite possible. Question is, do you want/need to gamble on that differential

        4 years, 4 months ago

Once again, that's kind of irrelevant. In 12 weeks time we could be saying the opposite with VvD offering the best value of all the premium defenders. Thing about Liverpool is they are only a wafer away from their defenders EASILY being amongst the highest scoring, and the best value players in the game. We needed to be aware of the wafer thin line between 3 Liverpool defenders being really poor and 3 Liverpool defenders being and unbelievable differential. One goal a game they're conceding. If that stops, and it likely will, it's a game changer

    9. bench boost for every gamew…

little bit too expensive for my liking, and he does not cover Robertson in terms of points or excitement when watching live. the pro is that he is nailed during christmas and he tends to score a goal or two

if i picked a pool def to go with TAA who is not Robertson i would go the one who plays alongside VVD

Not so sure yet what to do with my 2 FT (2.6 itb)

    Heaton, Button
    Robbo, Soy, Walker, Lundy, Montoya
Salah, KdB, Martial. H. Wilson, McGinn
    Abraham, Jiminez, Ings

Last GW I didn't had a goalie as Heaton was injured, so I feel I have to react there. At the same time I'm a bit concerned to be without Vardy, but could imagine that I could wait one GW as Leicester plays in Brighton who looked solid at home.
Any feedback and input would be appreciated

Mane/Salah in or hold? Feels foolish selling Auba/Sterling when they are both home vs weak defences and pool are away to a stubborn palace team.

    2FT & 0.5itb

    Pope
    TAA - Robbo - Lunds - Soy
    Sterling - Mount - Kdb
    Vardy - Tammy - Auba

I would bring in Mane for Auba (plus some cheap options obviously) and then Sterling to Salah the week after.
Salah scores better at home, so wouldn't bring him in for an away game. Mane scores equally home and away

Last year I had great TV for all season and finished in top 1k. Made right bw choices more or less.

This year I have not been that convinced on the bandwagons (got Tammy 7.6) or old bulls (got Vardy 9.2, Mane 11.9) and I also still have Greenwood and Cantwell from which I have lost 0.2 from each (and Salah). If I had jumped on those bws earlier my rank and tv would be significantly higher. And if I had made more good choices I would have had fts to get rid of at least Cantwell.

I like the idea of high correlation between high tv and rank.

it´s about prediction for future points, not past for everyone who says Mané. I have Mané and i think Salah will do better than him from no until february.

Save the transfer. Currently a nice rotation of budget defenders that's working well but 4 budgets is always a risk and you should be ready to be able to move on Robbo or a Leicester winger if they show big scores

    A) Pieters to Janmaat with a view to getting Salah in for KDB for GW14
    B) Pieters to Robertson with a view to getting Mount out and switching to a 4-3-3

What’s people thoughts on a few dilemmas many may be facing including myself

    1) Sell Sterling or De Bruyne? I am looking to sell one to change back to a 343 formation with Jiminez. Sterling costs a lot more especially for me as I have had KDB since GW1, so I also have lots of value tied up in him. The money can also allow Maddison over Tielemans or possibly Pulisic over Mount but is this worth it when losing an explosive asset.

    2) Is Maddison over Tielemans worth the extra 1mil? Yes he is on set pieces but he has actually only scored an extra goal and provided the same amount of assists. 1Million can go along way and for me it would allow me to keep Sterling instead of KDB if that is what I decide.

    3) Is double Liverpool defence a good idea? Obviously both full backs look great. I’m still without TAA and don’t really want to shift Robertson, so the double up may be good. However both means benching Soyuncu or Lundsram etc which will cause a lot of points to be benched.

Sterling. KdB getting ruined from the cb situation

In theory, yes, dead balls is an automatic plus point. Both look great and if you're short on cash, Tiele will do perfectly

For me yes, I've gone TAA, Robertson and Mane. They're essentially acting like midfielders with CS benefits. Alison is back and they should get a few cs over the favorable fixtures.

I'd rather Sterling + Mane and the double Liverpool defense

Thanks. Keeping Sterling would mean I get Tielemans over Maddy which I don’t mind as you say. It would also mean double Pool defence out of the window in the near future which I’d like but not overly bothered if I can’t do. Only thing which sways me to keeping KDB over Sterling is the value I hold in him otherwise I think I’d be selling him to Sterling

KDB wasnt suffering at all against LFC, his teammates let him down - with a striker in form instead of Kun he would have had couple of assists atleast.

      1. KDB. Think Sterro will come good. Stats and general eye test indicates he will

      2. Yes

      3. I think so, but only if you are playing 4 at the back

Thank you. As above Sterling is my preferred player to hold bar the value tied up. I could only afford Double Liverpool defence with Tielemans, even if I held KDB I couldn’t afford Maddison and the double up, but would be playing 343 anyway so not so much of an issue. Got a few injury concerns this break to. Lots to think about.

    3. bench boost for every gamew…

A, Sterling, because KDb gets more points pr million
B, He might not be worth the 1m but his pricepoint is easier to navigate from, if and when you decide to sell. More good options in that bracket than if you are at 6.6 and below
C, In isolation double up seems very good but with all the cheap defenders that rack up points and have decent fixtures still, one have to ask is it really that wise? Lundstram has perfect fixtures, Soy/Tomori decent ones etc, and 2 or even 2.5 million can have a lot of influence on your midfield and strikers options. It also influence on set up and formation, if you have both i would prob go more 4-4-2 perhaps? Seems kind of boring but if you take into consideration 2 defenders that are practically wingers and a defender that plays as an AM then perhaps this could be a valid strategy?

That is true. Fact that he continued till 86th minutes even when the game was practically in the bag & 70/75 minutes mark gives me some positive light. We'll see how it goes.

Maybe to see how he’d cope. Can’t carry a player vs City. If it continues to be an issue he could become 70/75 mins or missing minutes in midweeks.

Not ideal, hopefully the two weeks does him well. Shaqiri reappearing over Xmas would be nice.

Richarlison one week punt, Then the switch to Martial for two home fixtures
And then Pope to Henderson for Newcastle and Norwich games

I like and own Jimenez. More reliable than the other two. And I wouldn't waste a FT on a GK personally.

Tough call as Richalison vs Norwiich; then Martial/Utd have two good home fixtures.
Guess I have to make a call on it. Have Jimi now and just wondering if time to move to a differential

        2. Deulofail

I would do that. KDB and TAA are FPL gold. Salah and Tamori are good options, only.

I just see KDB still at 40% ownership - prob too much risk to swith to Salah who has an ankle boot on according to news. So KBD and Trent it is.

              • 8 Years

I don't see risk in ownership. The risk is missing out on points you could have got if you made a better decision 😉

I think Trent vs Palace, Brighton, then three more good ones
