Why I want to sign Sadio Mané before it’s too late

At 5pm last Saturday, I was on the cusp of being hit with a dark red arrow.

Four of my five players had blanked and I was going into Sunday without highly-owned players such as Kevin de Bruyne (40%), Mohamed Salah (27%) or Sadio Mané (35%) which put me at risk of my overall rank plummeting further.

Thankfully my trust in Jamie Vardy’s (£9.6m) form paid off with his 24 points as captain, as well as an unexpected clean sheet for Kasper Schmeichel (£5.2m).

This was further boosted with Anthony Martial’s (£7.7m) double-digit haul on Sunday.

How I got on in Gameweek 12

It was just a shame that my Manchester City coverage of Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) failed me. Then again the duo have a dire record as visiting players at Anfield so I shouldn’t have expected much.

Liverpool’s late loss of a clean sheet cost me four points with my ownership of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) but it probably was for the best as I ended up unpunished by anyone with a defensive double-up.

Previously, I had sold Salah and Mason Greenwood (£4.3m) for Vardy and Martial.

I felt that this made perfect sense as I was effectively obtaining two attacking players for the price of one.

I had numerous concerns last weekend with my squad and could have easily used a free transfer or taken a hit.

Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) could have swiftly been switched out for Youri Tielemans (£6.6m) with my cash in the bank.

Mané has really caught my eye recently

But ultimately I wanted the in-form, Mané. I should have bought him weeks ago. Aguero has demonstrated that he is a rotation risk too often this season, despite scoring nine Premier League goals thus far. However, only one since Gameweek 6 weakens his appeal significantly.

An easy move for me would be to sell Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) and the Argentina international for Mané and Aaron Connolly (£4.7m) without taking a hit.

But I would still be left with Yarmolenko.

Whether I make one, two or three transfers during the international break, I almost certainly need to crowbar in Mané. I simply have no choice but to do so.

Another option could be to sell my two attacking Manchester City assets for Salah and Mané if I wanted to put all of my eggs in one title-race basket.

However, after now trailing Liverpool by nine points, Pep Guardiola will be more motivated than ever before to convert their decline with a winning spree, even if they are facing Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in their next five Premier League games.

Owning Jamie Vardy has had a big impact on my season in recent weeks

I managed to end Gameweek 12 with a third consecutive green arrow and my best overall rank since the last week of August.

I finally have some momentum on my side with the international break providing me with much needed time to plan ahead for the upcoming winter fixture rush.

The 62 points I picked in Gameweek 12 seems modest in comparison to a lot of seasoned FPL managers but I do feel content with the 193 points I’ve amassed over the last three rounds.

It wasn’t long ago that I was ranked as low as 2.7 million despite having a more than reasonable start – so I’m very happy with my recent progress.

I’ve also surprised myself by being more cautious with my transfers this season with only two hits taken to date – each resulting in a red arrow.

My aim now is to make incremental gains with safe transfers and hope that my armband picks can deliver on a more regular basis.

December will no doubt be filled with variables in FPL, as it always is, so I need to make the most of my newfound traction and hope that I can continue my run of green arrows.

Any professionals about tonight. Need some help here. Narrowed my decision down nicely now to this.

    A) Perez (bha) + 4
    B) Rico (WOL) +4
    C) Grealish (NEW)
    D) Maddison (bha)

Not a professional but... Maddison the best option.

It's hard to guess, but I'm sure Gray is pushing for a starting sport over Perez. Maddison has form and won't be dropped.

I kinda don't rate Bournemouth's CS chances for this match, but who knows - they could pull it off again.

Grealish has the injury concern. Probably fine after the International Break, but I often like to see how they are performing post-injury before bringing in. Newcastle not -awful--either.

Plus, are you talking about taking a hit for C/D? Weird way to phrase it if so.

Your recent GW history suggests you are !

It is indeed a hit for C/D. I feel putting it that way gives people a better idea of how it affects their score this week.
Yeah banking on Grealish being fit but you are right, Newcastle not a defense to hit against.
Rico is who I am on atm, Wolves only scoring late Jimmy goals in all competitions, can only last so long, if traore is out seems a no brainer perhaps

You suggesting a hit for Maddison then?

Nope.....all good....Better to have a full squad over the coming weeks.

No such thing as a benching headache. If you have Mount on your bench for a loss of 10pts, as oppose to not having him at all, why is it a headache. You miss 10pts whether you have him or not....but you have him next week.

I will never understand why it is better to have a regular 2ptr on your bench instead of a 10ptr..it makes no sense.

You lose value on the field. If I'm consistently benching a 6.0m mid or forward vs someone who has a 4.5m fodder. That 1.5m is the difference between say Vardy or Wilson.

Over the course of the season, it matters. I've always put emphasis on team value. Having more efficient squads that use all your money consistently and leave little on the bench will end up making a difference.

well taking 1 approach for the full season is an FPL sin.

You are theoretically correct, however, during December, you are very wrong. Bench Value plays more of a role than field team value.

          Tight phases require tight measures.

Then 2-3 transfers after new years, to regain team value.

He's dead on right with the selection

I dont see anybody to shift them out for the next game week, maybe Son, but i do think Man city will bounce back. Chelsea's defence isn't as good as the results they are getting suggests, Ajax absolutely picked them apart and i expect City to do the same. so it sort of feels side ways.

Three intriguing captaincy options for me after the IB:
      A. Sterling (CHE)
      B. Richarlison (NOR)
      C. Vardy (bha)

Currently thinking coinflip between A & B but Brighton could play into Leicester and Vardys's hands!

Brighton and the space they leave, coupled with no dunk, Vardy 100% for me. Wouldn't trust Sterling with captaincy until he improves. Richarlison could be amazing! But after the break could Norwich have had a real heart to heart and come back after the break more unified? Ahh who am i kidding haha.
Between B and C for me bud, preferably C.

How do this transfer plan sound? I know planning ahead usually is pointless, but it's nice to have some sort of plan on what to do as it affects which transfer I will make during IB

      GW13: Mount -> Martial
      GW14: save FT
      GW15: Son + Kelly - > Pulisic + Robbo

That would give me this team:

      Gazza
      TAA Robbo Soy
      Mane KDB Martial Pulisic
      Vardy Abraham Jimenez
      ____
      Button; Tomori Lundstram Hayden

      0.4 itb

A rather strong bench and benching headache every now and then. But Liverpool blanking gw18, potential injuries and busy Christmas schedule it might work out well. Alternative would be doing Tomori to Robertson.

      Thoughts?

This could be an unpopular opinion but as weak as SOU may be, I don't believe ARS' form and team strength are good enough to captain one of their attackers in gw13.
Only LIV LEI CHE MCI are currently reliable enough to justify captaining one of their players, imo.
Regarding gw13, I believe in Vardy v BHA and Mane v CRY more than MCI attackers v CHE.

      What do you think?

MCI attackers aren't reliable enough to captain - individually bad form and you don't even know who will start.

I've had the armband on Sterling all week but just switched it to Vardy. Some points below are obviously more important than others, but the picture they complete convinces me:

        1. I know he's 100% nailed on, although I also expect Sterling to start.
        2. Better -albeit FPL- form.
        3. Leicester playing much better and in a happier place than City at the mo.
        4. More rested (if Sterling plays the second international).
        5. Dunk is out.
        6. Chelsea's defence is improving, although I expect them to concede at the Etihad.

Southampton are an absolute disgrace atm. But i agree fully that Arsenal couldn't tale advantage if they started with 12 on the pitch. They are simply not consistent enough. They will win but by the odd goal.

Feels good seeing others too not favouring captaining MCI by default just because it's.. well.. MCI and it's a home fixture.
LEI deserve to be strongly considered.
There isn't a straight forward captain pick this gw, which will make results very interesting.

Jimmy. Utd are a game away from mediocrity. Brighton flattered them. Wolves are a well drilled, tactically sound team who have jimmy as their talisman. Great fixtures too. Martial is a bandwagon im steering clear of until he is tried and tested.

The only hit i have taken so far was a -8 back in gw7 to making 4 transfers which mainly worked out so maybe i should not be afraid to do it more often. 💡

Reading posts like this gives me itchy fingers.

Yeah, depends on one's team, my structure was all wrong with Kane, double Norwich, Otamendi, Mahrez, amongst others to shift...needed a complete overhaul so wasnt concerned about the hits as pretty much knew I'd be in worse shape if I didnt pull the triggers.

While setting my gw13 bus team on Saturday evening, I kinda automatically put the armband on KDB.
However, the more I think about it, the more confident I feel moving it to Vardy or Mane.

GTG, although maybe consider Heaton over Pope for home advantage. Newcastle have only scored 6 goal in 6 away from home and 3 of those at WHU.

If he's still injured Pope will come in anyway. Pretty tight between those 2 though so coin toss really.

That's almost my squad, with Button, Tomori and Rico instead of Heaton, Janmaat & Kelly, so GTG. I'm playing the same 11 too this GW.

Thinking of Sterling to Salah after next GW if Mo's fit.

Who is your captain? I'm on Vardy at the mo.

Mount could punish managers like you and me who plan to bench him.
Richarlison(C) feels quite risky, not sure he's a better pick than Vardy this gw.

Its definitely risky mate but Norwich are dire, agree on Vardy so that could change. I just like how attacking Janmaat is and Wat seem a much improved team of late. James was electric again last weekend and very unlucky not to grab a goal and a couple of assists.

Sterling (c), KDB, Madds, McGinn, (Cantwell)
      Vardy, Abraham, Jiminez

      (2) KDB -> Son (c) (and no.1 the following week)
