Strength in depth will be key for FPL managers ahead of a busy December

In her latest column, FPL Community’s Holly Shand has one eye on building a trustworthy FPL squad ahead of a busy month of Premier League football.

Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, not least because there’s tons of football to watch, with the Gameweeks coming thick and fast.

Having two free transfers has been great for tinkering so far in this international break, with a final gap to take stock and set up before the relentless festive schedule sets in.

The mathematician in me can’t help but crunch the numbers: there are nine Gameweeks between now and January 2. We can then add into the mix two more group games for the seven teams still involved in Europe, League Cup quarter-finals – and don’t forget Liverpool head off to the Club World Cup. That’s two more important games for Liverpool, creating a Blank Gameweek 18 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for themselves and West Ham United. That’s 12 matches in 41 days for the Reds.

So during this busy stretch, we Fantasy managers need to have a squad of reliable players who ideally start every single game and aren’t prone to injury.

We know rotation will happen during this period and we will need our benches, particularly in Gameweek 18 when our Liverpool and West Ham assets are without a Premier League fixture.

The midweek Gameweek 15 and the quick turnaround between Gameweeks 19 and 20 (less than 15 hours separates the culmination of the former from the start of the latter) will also be pinch points.

The likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) were benched in the early-December midweek round of fixtures last season, while Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) was among the cluster of players who faced substitute duty at least once over the busy festive period.

A lack of press conferences will do little to help us Fantasy managers, too – only a handful of managers held media gatherings in the run-up to the Boxing Day fixtures in 2018/19.

So looking at my own squad, I’ve got some problem areas and a Christmas wishlist!

Neal Maupay (£6.0m) has done little to impress since transferring him in two weeks ago. I’m snookered with Chelsea assets, having already tripled up, but Christian Pulisic (£7.4) is tempting. I feel over-invested in Manchester City midfielders, given their patchy form and tricky fixtures: Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) and Sterling feels too much right now. Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) seems to pick up injuries very easily and his starting berth is under threat. Erik Pieters (£4.7m) has lost his place in Burnley’s back four and Grant Hanley (£4.0m) has barely played. Why do I even have a Norwich City defender?

The problem list is lengthy and beyond what two free transfers can fix. I’m not against taking a hit or two though.

Onto my Christmas list, then.

I want to jump on board the emerging template front three, by bringing in Raul Jimenez (£7.3m) to go alongside Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.6m). The only issue here is that Jimenez is flagged with injury, although he has reported for international duty with Mexico.

Vardy is my only Leicester City asset, with temptation to move for a triple-up. I find it difficult to separate James Maddison (£7.5m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.6m) beyond their price and I could be tempted to buy both if it wasn’t for the solidarity and value in the Leicester defence, which would also be nice to tap into.

Top of the list was a triple-up on Liverpool, bringing in another star to sit alongside Sadio Mane (£12.1m) and Alexander-Arnold. Double defence or double attack? Well, it’s emerged that Salah and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) both have niggling ankle issues, which is enough to deter me for now over this busy period.

So, the big issue I need to decide on, is which Man City midfielder to ditch. The underlying statistics aren’t great for Sterling or De Bruyne, with Sterling seemingly stuck on the wing and banned from cutting in, without Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) in the side.

De Bruyne’s key passes haven’t converted to ‘big chances’ of late, but he can make a mockery of his underlying statistics with just one set piece. De Bruyne seems the better value in the long term and with Sterling already on four yellow cards and a ban looming, that might give me just the excuse to part company for now.

So it looks like this week, I’ll take a -4 which will involve selling Maupay, Sterling and Pieters for Jimenez, a Leicester midfielder and a Foxes defender. That will leave me plenty of cash in the bank, with Hanley and Cantwell set to be moved out in future weeks to strengthen the bench – if there aren’t other fires to fight!

I may take a -8 so that I can avoid playing two Chelsea attackers away at Manchester City, but it does feel a bit unnecessary right now.

That’s the loose strategy – let’s see what the international break throws at me to scupper all those grand plans!

Really not sure what do now if Salah is out for a month , already took a hit , but would it be worth another one to get Mane or Sterling?

Just wait until the pressers, no point worrying about some random article when there has been no other sources. I suspect there will be no truth in it and the 2 week break will give his ankle plenty of time to recover from the knock he has been carrying.

I don’t think we’ll ever be in he luxury position of getting any certainty - more like a drip feed of “we hope he’ll be ok for next week”

The Fernandinho tackle definitely hurt him, you could see it straight after, and the Choudry tackle obviously caused the situation in the first place

But he seemed to be coping by the end of the City game and missing palace would give him a full three weeks between city & Brighton GW14 so I think he’s a hold

Unless we get a definitive 4 week or 6 week abscence confirmation from KlippityKlopperty

If you have bench cover then stick with Salah. You do not want to take a hit and then have to bring him back afterwards.

Silly question but they are both pretty cheap can you not have both? If not I'd go Soyuncu and maybe someone like Baldock to cover some of Lundstram's clean sheet points.

Grealish. When fit he will start every game and over the season get you more than the other two players.

After I use my bench boost chip in 17 he will likely be my 5th midfielder. Also McNeil is a better option than Barnes IMO.

That’s funny I actually think Pereira is a rare Leicester player who has regressed (from a pure FPL perspective obvs, he’s still quite a decent fullback) under Rodgers compared to Puel

Puel favoured playing him OOP quite regularly, and he got 7 attacking returns in 24 games under that regime - The BRodgect favours him as more of a RB though, and his attacking output has declined as a result (4 attacking returns in 23 games under Rodgers - not terrible, but not the level that generated his price increase)

Whilst his price was also increased over the summer primarily due to his OOP attacking returns under Puel, an FPL benefit that he technically doesn’t get to enjoy any more - so you get a bit of “the worst of both worlds” with Pereira there... still a good FPL pick though if you’ve a spare 0.5-1.0 burning a hole in your pocket

But overall at their respective prices, my leaning would presently be towards Chilwell, who looks to be really kicking on & growing into his role 😉

The only thing that would put me off Pereira are him being

*The only thing(s) that would put me off Pereira are him being more expensive than the Chill Machine (Chillers, The Big Chill), and him not enjoying the same OOP privileges that generated his summer price increase

You got TAA who you will play most weeks, Lund has nice run until 18-19, playable apart from them. Cahill goes on a nice run so could be played most times and Janmaat has some good and some not so good. I would not invest much in that spot, take a cheap one, nailed preferably. Newcastle defender, Villa defender, Bou defender. Take a look on the fixture list and see who suits best for rotation during december. No ponint going for one that you will like to play most weeks, but one that you can use in emergency, gw18 it´s nice to have both Villa or New defender for instance. Having Tomori for example not that good vs Spurs..

Thinking of doing Cantwell to Tielemans ( .1m short for Maddison) and benching Mount but is giving myself this benching headache going forward a help with busy schedule or something I really should avoid?

    Pope
    TAA Soyünücü Lundstram
    Mané KDB Martial Tielemans

    McGovern Mount Rico Diop

Nope looks like a decent move and nothing wrong with having a benching headache, if there is points left on your bench so be it.

We have a similar attack except I've now got Richarlison (C) & Maddison instead of your Martial & Tellyman and I'm benching Mount too 🙂

    2. StoichkovFPL
      • 8 Years

I can do similar move but not sure itsngood idea. First its not flexible and second thing is that headache every week and flustrating points on bench too

      1. Another Hoops
        • 8 Years

I disagree I think his move is very flexible especially because if he is 0.1 short of getting Maddison he will have money in the bank to upgrade a defender for example.

It agree it can be very frustrating to leave points on the bench and is one of the reasons I have the Ryan/ Button combo in goal for my team but at the same time it's not the end of the world as long as you can justify why you've played another player ahead of Mount for example.

Not sure about it thb..yes, can live with points on bench (but dont like it) but having even more ITB (this season we are spoiled with cheap players) and some 4.5 cheap fodder gives you faster way (even in one move) to get some big hitter if needed like Son or KDB etc. If you sped it on bench player than you cant make easy swap from 5.8m - 7.4m player to more expensive one. Also with Lundstram, Soy, Tomori etc we have enough cover on bench for coming busy period

          1. Another Hoops
            • 8 Years
            4 years, 5 months ago

I think I understand what you're saying but if we break it down to just doing Cantwell to the Tellyman this week with around 0.8 left ITB then I think it's a good move.

            1. StoichkovFPL
              • 8 Years
              4 years, 5 months ago

This week yes, long term no 🙂
having no bench fodder around 5.0 mil always ends up with -4 (or wase of FT) as you will find one of yours 8 attackernas a cash cow for upgrade elsewhere.
But everyone have his own strategy so Im not saying its a crazy move. GL.

      Pope
      TAA, Robbo, Pereira, Chilwell, Lundy
      Mane, Martial

If you feel happy with the defense then bench headache should not be an issue. If for the sake of argument Robbo for example is firing then you will need to spend your FT. My approach is to have £5M-ish strong mid/fwd to cover busy period: Moutinho, Traore, Trezeguet, Mousset etc. To allow flexibility an instant change in defense when required.

    5. bench boost for every gamew…

The old bulgarian playmaker got a relevant point about flexibility, but at the same time, your team will be well rounded with good options from bench. What it could prove to be trouble is if you really want to have Son, or if one of the premium strikers hits it. Then you will be having a difficult time trying to squeeze them in. That Spurs run of 3 games in christmas is one that really can distinguish between managers i believe. Brighton, Norwich and Southampton.

19 Liverpool play Leicester away and 20 they play Wolves at home, I would probably wait until the next WC to get them back.

        I don't have a WC but if you do now is probably a really good time to use it or even better GW 17 has some really juicy fixtures;

        Liverpool v Watford

Leicester away is tough granted, but Wolves home is tough on paper but Wolves is unlucky to play friday night and vs City, so a better time for Liverpool to have Wolves can´t be found.

Plan is to get a playing keeper this week.
Then wildcard next week and go Hendo + Button again.

Looking at something along the lines of:
      Hendo, Button
      Robbo, TAA, Lund, Soy, C.Taylor
      Salah, Sterling, Tielemans, Pulisic, Nakamba
      Vardy, Abraham, Ayew.

That said, if Mount and KDB suddenly start firing again, I may hold off a bit longer.

I’m not sure. Keep reading that people are using in GW18 but what do you actually do? Remove your Liverpool assets and then spend the next few weeks bringing them back in?

      My team is:

      Ryan/ Pope
      robbo/ Digne/ lund/ rico/ soy
      Sterling/ kdb/ madison/ james/ dedon
      Tammy/ vardy/ jimi

Think I’ll probably wait until the forward line starts misfiring or want to spread sterling/ kdb to liverpool/ better mid priced assets

Posted this on the wrong article before, thoughts?

    Is a front 8 of...

    Mane KDB Mount Maddison Martial
    Tammy Jimmy Vardy

... a benching headache and a waste of resources?

Or is it sensible depth into a busy period?

I feel it's bit too much, drop one to a good 5-ish mid/fwd if you wanted a depth in the team

I'm not a Newcastle fan but saw some people talk about this the other day on the site and the general consensus was yes but the concern was that Schar was back soon. Then again maybe Clark is more nailed than Fernandez.

I just looked at minutes played tbh and IMO it looks like Clark could be ahead of Fernandez but both have scored recently so I think if you have a decent back up to come off your bench it could be worth the risk going for Clark.

Following weeks will give benching headaches with Che fixtures and heavy backline though.
Nothing wrong with that, but cant see the point in downgrading those 2 def mids. For whom?

            • 9 Years

There isn't really that much in the way of benching headaches. Lundstram rotates reasonably well with players to reduce the benching headaches to one, and I want one strong player on my bench throughout the busy period, so that's fine.

There are no great options. My only real question is do really NEED to be looking at releasing that money
