Suspensions

Which FPL players are nearing a suspension?

Those who keep an eye on our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players – and indeed have already resulted in suspensions for a number of Fantasy assets.

The final international break of 2019 seems a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of 19 Premier League fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten yellow cards.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

Currently Banned

Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) will miss Brighton and Hove Albion’s match against Leicester City in Gameweek 13 after collecting his fifth yellow card of 2019/20 in the defeat to Manchester United last weekend.

Christian Kabasele (£4.3m) will sit out Watford’s clash against Burnley next Saturday after being dismissed for two bookable offences in the victory over Norwich City, while Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) serves the final match of a three-game ban in Newcastle United’s Gameweek 13 encounter with Aston Villa.

Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) will also be unavailable for Manchester City next Saturday, after being handed a one-match ban by the Football Association in relation to a message he sent on social media.

All four of the players above will return in Gameweek 14.

Already Served a Suspension

Six players have already served a one-match ban for collecting five cautions in the Premier League.

Jorginho (£5.1m), Ashley Young (£5.4m) and Jefferson Lerma (£4.8m) are available for their clubs next weekend after serving one-match bans in Gameweek 12, while Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m), Jose Holebas (£4.7m) and Danny Rose (£5.4m) have also missed fixtures in recent weeks due to their accumulation of bookings.

Milivojevic has collected more cautions (six) and committed more fouls (27) than any other Premier League player in 2019/20.

A total of 18 players have been dismissed in the English top flight this season, although Son Heung-min‘s (£9.6m) red card in Gameweek 11 was subsequently overturned and he didn’t serve a suspension.

If any of the players above (excluding Son) are sent off for a second time in 2019/20, they will incur an additional one-game ban onto whatever the punishment is for their next dismissal.

On Four Yellow Cards

Nine players are currently one booking away from a one-match ban.

Perhaps the most noteworthy name on the list above, certainly from a Fantasy perspective, is Raheem Sterling (£12.0m).

The Manchester City winger has already accrued more yellow cards than he did in each of the last two campaigns and no player in Pep Guardiola’s squad has committed more fouls than Sterling (16) so far this season.

Of the other eight names above, Ruben Neves (£5.3m), Issa Diop (£4.5m) and Fabinho (£5.5m) are the only ones owned by more than 1% of FPL managers.

Fabinho was benched in Gameweek 11, with Jurgen Klopp not risking his Brazilian midfielder for fear of him collecting a fifth booking of the season and subsequently missing the visit of Manchester City.

On Three Yellow Cards

A total of 31 players are on three yellow cards.

Amongst this cluster of Fantasy assets are five players with double-digit ownership: John Lundstram (£4.9m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m), Ederson (£6.0m) and Daniel James (£6.2m).

Callum Wilson (£7.8m), Ashley Barnes (£6.3m), Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m) and Dale Stephens (£4.5m), all of whom sit on three bookings, are among the 13 Premier League players who have committed 20 or more fouls this season.

While we’re on that subject, Sadio Mane (£12.1m) is joint-third among FPL assets for most fouls committed (22) in 2019/20 – although his owners can rest easy as the Senegal international has collected only one booking along the way.

When Are the Cut-off Points for Suspensions?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

For most players, that will mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 on December 26/27.

For Liverpool and West Ham United assets, who blank in Gameweek 18, their cut-off point will be after Gameweek 20 is over on December 28/29.

Any unexpected postponements between now and Boxing Day would, of course, affect the above.

The cut-off point for ten yellow cards is after 32 league fixtures, which will be at the beginning of April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

    BB week 15?

It's beginning to tempt me with this set up

    Guaita Pope
    TAA Soy Lund PvA Rico
    Mane KdB Pulisic Maddison Mount
    Vardy Abraham Ings

Biggest doubt is over potential benching of KdB. Lots of lovely fixtures for the triple Leicester and Chelsea, double Liverpool Ings and double Palace defence punt. Sort of fixture where Pope could let in 3 and still score nicely.

KDB should not be benched at any time.
Bench boost GW15 sounds good though unless you want to save it for a DGW.

Got a bee in my bonnet that KdB will miss either Burnley or Newcastle. I assume he gets lots of Belgium minutes and the matches either side of the "easy" fixtures are top 6 match ups where he's a shoo in. This is exactly the sort of time where Pep has historically rested Sterling and I assume KdB would get the same treatment - see the first IB for instance where he missed Norwich as a starter.

Assume Sterling will play now that he has missed the England games.

I thought about using BB in 15 but if I use it it's going to be in 17. Will make a decision after next weekends games weather to make the moves to do it or not.

      Liverpool v Watford
      Leicester v Norwich
      Chelsea v Bournemouth
      Burnley v Newcastle

      Pope - Ryan
Lundstram - Robertson - Soyuncu - Tomori - Van Dijk
      KDB - Maddison - Mane - Mount - JWP
      Abraham - Jiminez - Vardy

Ooh that looks interesting - hadn't seen that. Might think about that.

Fly in the ointment for me would be Palace Brighton - not expecting good things there for Palace and expect to be on probable double Palace defence by then

      Can work out for sure.
"Just" need 20+ points from "Real" bench for it to be a success 😉

I think one thing to bear in mind is that it's likely to be a pretty insignificant decision in your season. Even if you get 20 points, which I agree would be a success, the swing over a failure is probably less than ten points. All this is why working weeks of transfers around it is a mistake, imo.

The only "forced" transfer would be Guaita in for Button and not Pope.

I really like Guaita on fixtures and historic form but he does miss some and a second keeper is on budget and feels sensible (circa 105.0 TV currently)

Shaw but William's looks good and for his age Ashley Young has done well. Shaw just can't stay fit long enough to cement a spot and show he's #1.

I think it will have come down to Vardy and Mane when its all said and done for GW 13

Do you trust Vardy's form against a Brighton team that have been very good at home recently in terms of chances conceded.

Or do you go with Mane against CP who have not been as good at home recently but your perception and history says that Selhurst is a tough venue.

Tough! I actually have the same choices and one of the reasons I'm doing Yarmelenko to captain Richarlison for free this week. I'd go Mane mate and good luck.

I strongly consider having Richarlison in my WC team for one of Martial / KDB original place. Just to have and cap him for NOR at home. Then get Martial / KDB afterwards in Richa’s place

        1. Another Hoops
          • 8 Years

Agree I'm going to have a power 8 attack (see below) which I'm not in love with but that transfer makes the most sense to me.

          Ryan
Lundstram - Soyuncu - Van Dijk
          KDB - Maddison - Mane - Richarlison (c)
          Abraham - Jiminez - Vardy

          Button - Mount - Maguire - Lowton

The potential plan with 0.8 ITB is to do Richarlison > Martial in gw 14 and then downgrading my 5th midfielder from gw 15 onwards.

I have to admit, I didn’t realise Liverpool and West Ham players have to go an extra game as they miss a game prior to that yellow card deadline.

Do you have a full playing bench?
Are any of them likely to get more than 2 points?
Do you have quality players that are rotation risks?
Do you have high scoring wing backs that have a chance of being rotated?
Do you have quality players that have more away games than home games in the next 6 weeks?
Are you relying on differentials who tick the negative boxes above?

Then use your WC if you have one.

I am currently wildcarding this week.

My wingbacks are TAA, Rico and Janmaat.

All my premiums have 3 home and away game splits over the next 6 other than Liverpool who have a blank in GW18.

      Hope this meets your approval.

Poor team value combined with lateness to jump on players mean I’m either left with:

    A) One of Pope/ Gazzaniga, 4.0 goalkeeper and a 4.5 defender or
    B) Pope and Gaza with a 4.0 defender (probably Williams)

It has been close with Litmanen, Hyypiä and Hodgson, but only close. The history of failures is long, 32 failures to qualify to final tournament (Euro or world). So he is national hero now.

Not important info atm, but some here may still perhaps own him and want to know. Yes, he scored two goals and "got" one fantasy assist. Goal involvement 100%

All other teams in PL know now that he is the main threat in Norwich attack. So no defender is left alone against him anymore. Everyone remembers what happened to VvD.

If Farke had somebody else who also can score to play close to Pukki, he could perhaps do something. But Norwich has less than zero squad depth and even bigger problems elsewhere. Pukki party in PL is over at least for now. But Pukki is still in form and he cannot be blamed for that.

People thinking about bench boosting gwk15, aren't you worried about it taking place midweek? Means there's just as much chance of rotation as there is during double gameweeks (same time between games), only if your player is rotated that's, that. There's no second game to pick up points.

I definitely see the argument in using it in a single gameweek rather than saving it for a double and then riding out the end of the reason with lots of money on the bench, just think a midweek gameweek is a little risky.

    1. George Sillett
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

Can't see the difference between using it in a midweek game as opposed to a weekend one tbh. The risks are identical with players from the bigger clubs who people will have most of frequently playing midweek anyway.

      1. LSK
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

I guess. It's just I saw people mentioning rotation in double gameweeks, but surely it's the same thing. It might not be a double gameweek in FPL terms, but there's still the same amount of days between 1 premier league game and the next as there will be in the double gameweeks later in the season. Anyway, just a thought. I'll be saving mine because I'm boring like that and always use the same chip strategy.

Tough one as I like both striker options and I'm not a fan of either mids (never see Dilva as a long term option personally) but I think you need Vardy to protect yourself from his hauls, as so many people will captain him most weeks for the next month or so.
