De Bruyne stars for Belgium as McGinn continues form

The final international break of 2019 continued on Saturday where a number of Fantasy Premier League assets saw some action.

We’ve got all the latest talking points from those matches in this Scout Notes article…

Euro 2020 qualifiers

Russia 1 Belgium 4

Kevin de Bruyne got himself two assists in Belgium’s 4-1 win against Russia

Big money transfers, loan moves and injuries mean that Belgium’s current line-up isn’t the Premier League all-star selection of old, but a key Fantasy finding was still there for the taking in Russia.

FPL’s most popular midfielder, the 39.9%-owned Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), was at his influential best for the Belgians, providing two assists, ahead of a massive Gameweek 13 clash with Chelsea.

He played the full 90 minutes, as did Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld (£5.4m), while the in-form Youri Tielemans (£6.6m) came on after 52 minutes and Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi (£6.6m) for the last 13.

Christian Benteke (£5.7m), Dennis Praet (£5.3m), Divock Origi (£5.2m) and Leander Dendoncker (£4.4m) were all unused subs.

Cyprus 1 Scotland 2

McGinn’s 2019/20 continues to go from strength to strength

The main news in the Scottish camp was the withdrawal through injury of Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), but a rising FPL star, John McGinn (£5.8m), kept the Fantasy fires burning in his absence.

The Aston Villa midfielder has produced three goals and two assists for his 11.9% Fantasy ownership and he was in excellent form as Scotland laboured to victory in Cyprus.

McGinn, who played the full 90 minutes, set up the opener and then scored the winner as the Scots moved ever closer to a play-off place. To seal the deal, they will need to avoid losing at home to Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

Sheffield United striker Oliver McBurnie (£5.7m) came on after 62 minutes, but his club-mate John Fleck (£4.8m) stayed on the bench, where he was joined by Southampton’s Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m).

Azerbaijan 0 Wales 2

Harry Wilson (second right) was on good form for Wales against Azerbaijan

Bournemouth’s Harry Wilson (£6.0m) was the star of the show as Wales kept their hopes of automatic qualification on track.

The Liverpool loanee, who has treated his 2.9% FPL fan base to four goals this season, scored and assisted in Baku.

Wales will secure second spot in the group with a win at home to Hungary on Tuesday, so Wilson is not in line for a rest just yet.

He played the full match on Saturday, as did club-mate Chris Mepham (£4.4m), Crystal Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey (£4.4m) and Spurs left-back Ben Davies (£5.4m).

Manchester United winger Daniel James (£6.2m) was subbed off with eight minutes remaining and, like Wilson, is unlikely to be given time off for the final qualifier.

Northern Ireland 0 Netherlands 0

Virgil van Dijk and the Netherlands have qualified for Euro 2020

A goalless draw meant the play-offs for Northern Ireland and an automatic qualifying spot for the Netherlands.

Burnley back-up keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell (£4.4m), Leicester City veteran Jonny Evans (£5.1m) and Watford’s Craig Cathcart (£4.4m) started and finished the match, while Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) played 81 minutes and his club-mate Michael McGovern (£4.0m) warmed the bench.

For the Dutch, Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) played 90 minutes, Brighton midfielder Davy Pröpper (£5.0m) came on after 36 minutes and Bournemouth’s Nathan Aké (£5.1m) joined them for a brief injury-time cameo.

Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) was reduced to doing bits on the bench, alongside Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.4m).

Euro 2020 round-up

Man City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan was in action for Germany

Elsewhere, Germany qualified for their 13th straight Euros with a 4-0 win over Belarus.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündogan (£5.2m) played the full match and set up the final goal, while Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno (£5.0m) watched on from the bench.

Croatia joined the Germans after coming from behind to win 3-1 against Slovakia.

Chelsea’s Mateo Kovačić (£5.3m) played the last 15 minutes. Aston Villa back-up keeper Lovre Kalinić (£4.4m) was an unused substitute.

Meanwhile, Southampton’s Jan Bednarek (£4.5m) played 90 minutes for Poland as they won 2-1 in Isreal.

AFCON qualifiers

Pépé was kept away from penalty kicks by his Ivory Coast colleagues

Arsenal winger Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) and Tottenham defender Serge Aurier (£4.8m) played the full 90 minutes as Ivory Coast edged past Niger 1-0.

It was an eventful evening for Pépé, who earned a first-half penalty and then lost an argument with Max Gradel over who should take it. Gradel promptly missed and Pépé was denied a second chance when Franck Kessie won the game from the spot after the break.

Ivory Coast play again on Tuesday, in Ethiopia, where they could welcome back Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), who missed Saturday’s match as he continues to manage a foot injury.

Under-21s Euro 2021 qualifiers

Patrick Cutrone (£5.6m) scored twice for Italy Under-21s as they beat Iceland 3-0.

Everton’s Moise Kean (£6.5m) was suspended for the match following a recent red card on international duty.

Under-19s Euro 2020 qualifiers

Bukayo Saka scored for England Under-19s on Saturday

There were an unprecedented four goals scored by FPL assets for England Under-19s as they beat their North Macedonian counterparts in Euro 2020 qualifying on Saturday.

Two of those were stuck away by Manchester United midfielder James Garner (£4.4m).

More pertinently, Arsenal’s budget man Bukayo Saka (£4.5m) also found the net on Saturday.

As Everton continue to struggle for goals, a strike by centre-forward Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) for England Under-19s might endear him to Marco Silva some more ahead of Gameweek 13.

Can't get on board the Laca punt unfortunately.

Emery's rotation is Pep-like, and Laca gets hooked on 70 minutes pretty much every week. Arsenal aren't scoring many goals, and Laca's price point is a bit awkward.

I'd rather 3-5-2 with Martial instead of Laca, and upgrade KDB > Sterling or upgrade one of your rotating defenders.

It'll look more templatey but I don't like Laca as an FPL prospect.

I don't like Lacazette purely because Arsenal are kack. Would rather be boring and get Abraham and sacrifice Jimenez for a better midfielder instead.

Rashford definitely tends to score quite well when Martial is fit - would be interesting to see his record with/without Tony M to see if it's as stark as the team level equivalent

Which is something like 14 wins out of the last 18 that Martial has started vs. about 11 wins out of the last 20 without Martial starting, and something close to double the goals scored per game with martial starting vs. without plus double the league points obtained per game

Sorry I got that wrong - the record is actually even more dramatic:

        With Martial starting
        Played: 15
        Won: 11
        Lost: 3
        Drawn: 1
        Goals for: 33
        Goals against: 15
        Points per game: 2.26
        Win rate: 73.3%
        Loss rate: 20%
        Goals per game: 2.2
        Goals against per game: 1

        Without Martial starting:
        Played: 18
        Won: 5
        Lost: 6
        Drawn: 7
        Goals for: 19
        Goals against: 22
        Points per game: 1.16
        Win rate: 27.8%
        Loss rate: 38.9%
        Goals per game: 1.05
        Goals against per game: 1.22

    Just for banter and discussion.

Based on teams on paper, whom would you punt to win the Euros 2020?

For me, I'm probably going with Belgium as a favorite (I actually had them to win the last world cup) and Netherlands as a dark horse.

They probably are the best European side currently, up there with Belgium, since the other usual teams seem to be declining like Spain, Italy and Germany.

France are favourites, England 2nd favourites, but I'd probably go with Belgium. Netherlands, Spain & Portugal are also looking quite good atm. Germany have Gnabry and Sane if fit, so they'll be deadly on the counter. It's going to be tough to call.

Are we actually second favourites or that just with domestic bookies and weight of home support?

Every bookie in the UK has us as joint favourites or 2nd favourites. So yes, almost certainly domestic bias influencing the odds. Bookies are not reliable indicators of actual chance, odds are influenced by their popularity.

Giroud looks in great form for France atm. I think he complements Greizmann and Mbappe nicely. Dembele is a superb option to have too. They played a 3412 last game with Ben Yedder partnering Giroud and that worked nicely. They have options and strength in every area.

Surely..They were businesslike to qualify one of the first for the event. They are ruthless on setpieces and their attack is only getting better every year as Sterling Kane and Rashford hit top of their career. Sancho is another. Plus amazing fullbacks and CB in TAA Chilwell Maguire

Yeah, I don't agree with it. KDB is a such a huge factor for me, I think he's one of the best players in the world. Hazard isn't bad either. Their ageing defence is the only thing that concerns me. No more Kompany, Vertonghen is 32, Toby is 30, Vermaelen 34.

    Hi all
Looking for a piece of advice on this lot with 2 FT bf this gw and 0 itb:

    Ryan / Patricio
    Rico / Lowton / Pereira / Soy / Cancelo
    CHO / Sterling / Martial / Mané / Saka
    Tammy / Vardy / King

Given the lack of Liverpool defence and don't wanting to burn a FT, I could replace Cancelo with Lovren this week although I am not a big fan of him. Any other recommendations?
I'm thinking of going King+CHO --> Ayew+Mount before the gw next week, and plan on keeping Lowton for the next two gws and then move to a SHU defender, but not even sure if Lowton will start now.

Look forward to hear your thoughts, thanks!

So many people are suggesting hits to bring in Jimenez. I don't understand it.

The same drawbacks about Europa League fatigue still apply. He has a few decent fixtures but that's it. His underlying stats are okay, not great, and more concerningly, there is nobody at his price range to switch to right now. If he goes cold or worse, are you planning to switch to Barnes? King? Deulofeu? Pukki?

Meanwhile, he takes a mid 7.0s price point away from midfield which looks far stronger right now. It looks so much better to take 2 or 3 of Tielemans, Mount, Maddison, Pulisic, Martial over him. They have form, fixtures, play for better teams, and score midfielder points.

Why play 3-4-3 when you can go 3-5-2 instead?

I am planning on 352 over christmas. it allows for more flexibility as theres so many viable choices in the midfield.

Also the emergence of Connolly means theres a playing 4.5 striker that is capable of delivering, makes it that much easier to have a deep squad at 352

I agree. But that doesnt make him a bad option.
Its just a personal choice, preference I guess.
In a busy schedule Id trust him more than a Pulisic,(rotation) or martial(injury prone)

Great fixtures. Good form. BPS magnet. Fixture proof. If I didn't have him for the last few weeks, sure I wouldn't be 100% sure. But see zero reason to shift him out when I have him already. I wouldn't pick him over a fit Martial though.

100% Agree Id be very cautious with Bringing in Jimenez !!!

Wolves play 10 games between November 28th - January 1st

From 11/28 - 12/15 they play 6 matches with only 2 days of rest in between each match.

From 12/15 - 1/1 they play 4 matches (2 of which are against top 6 sides (Liverpool & Man City)) with only 1-day rest between the Man City & Liverpool fixture.

Wolves are notorious for not having the depth to rest players in multiple competitions. This means Jimenez will face inevitable fatigue affecting his fpl output.

I'm looking at a 442 formation if I decide to bring in Robertson to partner TAA. Soyuncu and Lundstram have good fixtures and are really cheap which leaves a lot of money to invest in midfield.

Camzy, what do you think of Danny Ings after this week @ 6.0 in a 3-4-3?

I think I'm planning on holding Sterling and KDB long-term, so a lot of my budget is taken up with them 2. Throw in Mane, Mount, Vardy and Abraham and suddenly I only have 6mil for a striker/midfielder.

The mids you mentioned are great value but I think there's value around the 6.0 striker range (Ings, Wood, Maupay, Josh King) where funds are maybe already tied up.
