The Scout Squad picks for FPL Gameweek 13

The first of nine Gameweek deadlines in the space of 40 days is fast approaching and the Scout Squad panel have returned from their international hiatus to submit their Fantasy Premier League player longlists for the coming weekend.

In this recurring feature, our four regulars – editorial staff Paul, David and Neale plus community manager Geoff – each proposes an 18-man squad of Fantasy assets for the coming Gameweek and explain their notable inclusions/omissions.

The 72 nominations listed below will then be narrowed down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83m) for the weekly Scout Picks selection ahead of the Gameweek 13 deadline at 11:30 GMT on Saturday.

There are requirements for at least one sub-£5.0m goalkeeper, at least one defender under £5.0m, at least one midfielder priced £6.0m or below and at least one forward priced at £7.0m or lower.

Each panelist is restricted to no more than three players from the same team, as is the case in FPL.

We will again be adding a captaincy to the Scout Picks, with details of that revealed on Friday.

DAVID SAID…

I’ve gone for a double-up on the defences of both Liverpool and Everton for Gameweek 13.

I’ll start with Everton as they host a Norwich side that has failed to score in all of their away matches since a trip to Anfield all the way back in Gameweek 1.

Lucas Digne naturally carries more goal threat but the cheaper Mason Holgate also presents an interesting alternative. He has started each of the last three matches at Michael Keane’s expense and has assisted in two of those.

For one week only, I think owning two players from the Reds’ backline is a smart decision given Crystal Palace have scored just four times at home all season.

Meanwhile, over the last four Gameweeks, the Eagles have conceded more headed shots on goal than any other team – excellent news for Liverpool’s sensation crossing full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

That also bodes well for Sadio Mané who, over the same period is top for headed attempts on goal among FPL midfielders.

I fancy Raheem Sterling to punish his sellers in Gameweek 13 as Manchester City host a Chelsea side still without a clean sheet on the road this season.

While he has just one attacking return in his last four league starts at the Etihad Stadium, Gabriel Jesus is the only one of his colleagues to boast superior minutes per expected goal involvement (mins per xGI) over the last four Gameweeks.

I think Gameweek 13 could be when we finally see Sheffield United struggle to contain a top-six side as they welcome Manchester United to Bramall Lane.

They will do so without Dean Henderson, who is ineligible against parent club and potentially John Egan, who picked up an injury for the Republic of Ireland over the international break.

Given that Chris Wilder has preferred not to change his defensive line-up at all this season, being enforced to replace two members of the squad could have a detrimental effect.

Let’s not also forget that since Anthony Martial returned to the Manchester United team, he and Marcus Rashford have been recording some impressive numbers and I expect them both to benefit from some potential problems in the Blades’ defence.

Even though there’s some clamour for a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang captaincy in Gameweek 13, I’d rather have his colleague Alexandre Lacazette in my squad.

Over the last four Gameweeks, the Frenchman has registered more than double the number of touches in the box, more shots, more of them in the penalty area, more shots on target and more key passes – that’s despite playing just 261 minutes compared to Aubameyang’s 360.

Furthermore, over the period in question, Southampton are third-bottom for headed attempts conceded while only Jesus has managed more of these than Lacazette among forwards.

Meanwhile, Chris Wood looks the most likely to break down Watford’s recently improved defence at Vicarage Road. Over his last five Premier League starts he has five goals to his name.

Finally, I still believe that Diogo Jota can offer a cheaper alternative to Raúl Jiménez, despite the Mexican’s impressive form. Over the last four Gameweeks, the Portuguese international has a superior minutes per xGI compared to his more expensive colleague and he went close to scoring in Gameweek 12.

NEALE SAID…

A Gameweek with no stand-out captaincy choice doesn’t necessarily mean that the usual suspects have to be overlooked in the Scout Picks.

Manchester City v Chelsea may be off-putting on paper, for example, but Pep Guardiola’s defence hasn’t convinced ever since Aymeric Laporte was stretchered off in Gameweek 4 and the Blues have themselves shipped 12 goals on the road despite not facing any of the top six on their travels.

Jamie Vardy, Anthony Martial, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane also make the cut despite their respective clubs having far from straightforward away fixtures.

I’m banking on defensive injuries and ineligibility aiding the first two, while Palace’s reputation for being a tough nut to crack hasn’t stopped them from being ranked bottom for headed chances allowed and chances conceded from their left flank during an admittedly tough last four Gameweeks: weaknesses that Mane and Alexander-Arnold can potentially exploit.

Norwich’s travel sickness (one goal scored and 12 conceded in six away games) is reason enough to triple up on Everton, who quietly have conceded the joint-lowest number of big chances over the last six Gameweeks.

Lucas Digne is actually creating opportunities on a more frequent basis than he was last season, while Richarlison is third among FPL midfielders for shots in the box in 2019/20.

A Villa double-up is rooted in their own decent home form and Newcastle’s vulnerabilities: the Magpies are bottom for headed chances conceded and chances allowed from their right flank over the last six Gameweeks, which may be to the benefit of Wesley and Matt Targett.

While many of my weekly selections are more “logical”, statistically-sound picks, sometimes FPL is all about the gut choices.

There is little to further Moussa Djenepo‘s case for inclusion aside from a couple of early-season displays that caught the eye and he plays for a relegation-threatened side who are woefully out for form.

However, he was one of the few bright spots in the defeat to Everton last weekend and he ought to experience a bit of joy down the left flank against an Arsenal side who concede chances for fun, even on their own soil.

PAUL SAID…

I’m willing to overlook Chelsea’s form players away to Man City, although the hosts’ key attackers could still deliver big points against a defence that is particularly suspect on the road.

The arrival of Jose Mourinho at Spurs could also influence our thoughts – I’ve found a place for Paulo Gazzaniga and Harry Kane away to West Ham in my selection.

Among my differentials, Daryl Janmaat has been a big success in Watford’s recent matches.

Owned by just 2.1%, the wing-back has produced 34 of his 36 points in the last five Gameweeks.

Janmaat’s five key passes over Gameweek 8-12 sit joint-top with Gerard Deulofeu for the Hornets, while his five successful crosses were more than double any team-mate.

Watford served up three clean sheets over that period and could add another one against Burnley at Vicarage Road.

Away from home, the Clarets’ total of 16 shots on target is better than just two other sides.

Harvey Barnes offers a cut-price route into Leicester’s attack away to Brighton.

Costing £5.9m and sitting in just 1.2% of squads, the winger has supplied four of his five assists for the season in the last four Gameweeks.

Barnes’ six shots inside the box during that period sat second only to the 10 of Jamie Vardy for the Foxes.

And his four shots on target bettered both James Maddison and Youri Tielemans, who managed three apiece.

Aston Villa’s Wesley entertains a Newcastle side who have lacked resilience on the road.

The Magpies have conceded 14 away goals, more than any other side.

Crucially, they have also allowed their opponents a league-leading 42 headed attempts – a weakness that can be exploited by the Villa target man.

Owned by 2.5%, Wesley has already shown his potential against teams that struggle to defend crosses.

He produced two goals and an assist against Norwich in Gameweek 8, serving up his season-high haul of 14 points.

The Canaries have conceded 39 headers, a total better only than Newcastle.

GEOFF SAID…

I’ve tripled up on Everton assets, who host a Norwich side with only one away goal all season and none in their last five games on the road. Jordan Pickford gets a goalkeeper slot and the attacking threat from Lucas Digne makes him a strong defensive pick. My third Everton player is Richarlison, who has attacking returns in three of the last four Gameweeks.

While the Arsenal defence doesn’t fill me with confidence, their home fixture against Southampton could hand them their third clean sheet of the season. David Luiz has strong home form, with two goals and a clean sheet in his last three home games for a total of 23 points.

Turning to Sheffield United, John Lundstram was unlucky to come out of the Tottenham game with only two points, and with three goals and as many clean sheets in six home games should be a strong pick, even if he doesn’t keep a clean sheet.

In midfield I’m counting on Sadio Mane, Raheem Sterling and Anthony Martial to return big. Sterling is arguably the biggest worry of the three, but despite being the most-sold midfielder ahead of Gameweek 13, I see him profiting against a Chelsea defence who are without an away clean sheet this season and who have shipped 12 goals in their six away fixtures.

Up front, I’ve opted for Harry Kane to get back on track after one attacking return in five Gameweeks, with the expectation that his new manager will tell him to stay forward and not come deep to collect the ball.

Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy have every chance to continue their strong form, as does Gerard Deulofeu and Watford, who now have a win and three draws in the last five Gaameweeks. Deulofeu has 19 points over the last two Gameweeks.

THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION

In Gameweek 12, the Scout Picks beat Kadhai Paneer FC 96-80.

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

Irfansheikh and AK’s 17-point winning margins from Gameweek 6 and 10 remain the current targets to beat.

Our Scout Picks article on Friday will have further details on who is representing the community this week.

    Utd Fans;

Would you can OGS to get Pocc at this stage? No doubt he won't be on the market for long... Would you roll that dice?

Not a United fan but suspect Ed Woodward will have the same fear that Poch is snapped up before long. Expect a sudden decision from the board as soon as United get another couple of poor results.

It's probably the best job Poch could get too.

I think the likes of Bayern/Madrid will have concerns over his ability to win and more relevantly to those clubs, manage the biggest egos in football.

Worth a call from woodward to sound him out,see if hes willing to wait to the end of the season, but I think you have to give Ole the season and see how it goes.
No doubt hes a better coach than ole, but in the time solskjaer was at utd last season they would have finished 3rd. Hes earned a chance to get top 4 this year.

Surprised Jamie Vardy wasn't the first name on the Scout picks for each of them. He plays a leaky Brighton without their two first choice centrebacks. Brighton are very open to counterattacks.

Vardy vs Sterling is a major headache for me re. the captaincy.

Feel that Vardy is more reliable for a goal, but Sterling's ceiling is much higher. Might just with Vardy as the 'safe' option - been burnt too many times this seaosn with the captaincy so I'll take a solitary goal!

Same but with KDB instead of Sterling. I’ve ruled Auba out pretty much, too many obvious logical reasons not to be him.

Vardy makes the most sense on paper but KDB at home back in an attacking role, good form in IB, with City wounded from Pool game against a team that usually concedes away. Risk is Frank plays a more pragmatic defensive game this week though.

            Agree with your points.

"Vardy makes the most sense on paper" especially rings true. He and Leicester are in such good form, and Brighton's defensive stats aren't great lately combined with the fact that Dunk is out and most likely Webster too.

KDB is a shout but there's always that worry he plays deeper, and pretty much the entire City team are returning from the IB might play a factor too.

A rested Vardy against a weaker Brighton who will come out and attack is the best option I think.

KDB in the deeper role is not a good captain option but he has only played there to assist Gundogan while Ferna/Rodri not available. No reason he shouldn’t be attacking this GW. His points output this season is amazing when in that role. Currently the on Vardy with KDB vice but I may do a switcheroo yet!

I feel Vardy vs. Sterling is a no-brainer. It's like people are forgetting Chelsea are a very in-form team, joint-second (on points) with Leicester.

Sure we're a bit leaky here and there but...

Don’t think people are forgetting that, I fully expect them to score and maybe more than one, I expect the same from City though. Sterling isn’t a captain option because of his clean sheet potential.

Do you think Frank will pick a more defensive midfield though? That’s a big factor.

Yeah this is a very fair point. It's not like Man City are playing a bottom half team etc.

Leicester will surely score vs Brighton and Vardy has such a high GI when they do find the net.

Don't know why but I think Mourinho and Tottenham are a good fit. It looks like Mou chooses clubs that haven't won trophies in some time so that players/fans are more likely to accept his strict style of football. the likes of Harry Kane, Eriksen or Alli seem to be trophies starved so I think they will get along quite well. There won't be such huge expectations as in Man United too I think. Spurs also have very good team after all, imho they just need some good wingers and are good to go.

take a -4 to get TAA in for lowton? Team for weekend currently:

    Gazza

    Lowton / Lundstram / Soyuncu

    Sterling (C) / Mane / KDB / Djenepo

    Vardy / Jimenez / Abraham

    Button / Rico / Dendonker / Tomori

Any other LFC fans joining me in the misery of another joke of a members’ ticket sale this morning?

        You actually managed to get?!

Past 4 years straight I’ve paid for membership, dutifully joined the members sale twice a year at the right time. Never got a single ticket. Don’t know why I bother 🙁

        What’s your secret Berbs?

We've got 3 cards and you need 4 or more games on each card for the previous season etc. The only way to get on the ladder is to go to the crap games and build up points like that - the downside of being this good is that it's harder to get tickets for the crap games too. Luckily we've been doing this for years..

Whereabouts do you live? I'm more than happy to give you the cards for any games we/friends don't attend.

Yeh I know re the 4 credits but I was always told the 4+ sale is just as random as the free for all so was impressed you got!

Trouble is if have to get tickets for the crap games first to get on the ladder. Also always check in late availability sales and never get lol.

Last season only match I managed to get tickets to was last pre-season vs Torino and the Carabao in the Auto-enrolment neither of which count 😆

            V kind of you mate. I’m London-based.

Been a fan for coming up to 30 years. Just a frustrating mess these ticket sales. Just rewards touts and people who are able to splash on hospitality tickets

The 4 game rule works for sure - the queue is chaotic but we've done well for a few years.

We're in London too so shouldn't be a problem giving you the cards and getting them back. I'll definitely give you a shout if we/friends don't go to any. We're going United in Jan next!

Yep and it pains me to say, but it's the local Liverpool fans who are the biggest touts and they're the ones who moan most about 'wools' getting tickets!

                Really appreciate it Berbs.

United in Jan will be a great one!!

The only consolation is I know I’m not alone. People decades older than me from generations of fans still not getting year in year out. I read RAWK forum around the time of the sales and it isn’t pretty!

Aye, I was at City too and I think that was up there with the best atmosphere's - CL reminiscent. Times are great at the mo and it's not going to last forever so everyone's enjoying it.

The club are clamping down on the ticketing service and to be fair are improving - although it isn't enough. One of the biggest issues is that those inheriting season tickets of the deceased and renewing in their names so they get automatic renewal - which is why they introduced a new ID verification system. Small steps, but hopefully the right steps into ensuring a fair policy for all.

I'll definitely give you a shout if we get games and can't make them.

A lot of money but you’ll have an amazing experience!

I took my son last year to the only match I could get tickets to which was pre-season vs Torino. Got train up from London, good seats next to the Kop, hung around after to see the players leave, stayed in a hotel and did stadium tour next day.

It’s these things the kids remember!

Is it more bandwagoners in the Klopp era. Talked to a lady who goes over to three or foylur games a season. Not only has he not gone for more than a year but the fella who got him tickets can't get tickets.

Our recent success is of course a massive factor but the whole ticket system that supposedly is a benefit for paying members that don’t have season tickets is a joke and unless you can somehow get to at least 4 matches then you never have a chance in the sales.

Repost for some feedback on the team and the question please...

    Pope
    Chilwell Soyuncu Lundstram Robertson
    Mount KDB Sterling Salah
    Vardy Abraham

    Button Rico Dendoncker Greenwood

    2 FT, 0.3 ITB

If ruled out, shall I use my 2FT for Robertson Salah >> TAA Mane ?

Hi, current team below with 1 FT:
    Ryan (Button)
    Soyuncu Lundstram Robertson (Rico, Reid)
    Mount KDB Sterling Salah Maddison
    Jimi Abraham (Greenwood)

Initial plan was to do: Sterling Greenwood -> Dendocks Vardy
But with Salah and Robbo likely out:
    A) Salah -> Mane and go without Vardy for one more week
    B) WC to team below:
    Ryan
    Soyuncu Lundstram TAA (Rico, Reid)
    Mane KDB Son Maddison (Dendocks)
    Jimi Abraham Vardy

    Cheers!

    Tielemans or Maddison?

Worried about Maddison's ongoing small injury problems since the past few weeks.
Also he creates less quality chances from open play than Tielemans.

    1. Dave Bauer

I suspect you might get a few less points from T, but he’s a bit cheaper. So swings and roundabouts.

      1. Karan14
        • 7 Years

Over the season he might score marginally less points but if I can catch him for a few gameweeks when he outscores the highly owned Maddison it would be gold.

I think Maddison has a higher points ceiling, but tielemans is cheaper so depends on where the spare change is used.

Overall i think Tielemans is a stronger pick for me

Well I have no plans of using the spare change anywhere yet but it always comes handy doesnt it?

Mou is a Kane fanboy and Kane will go back to staying up front. Son will probably be forced out on the wing or he might favor a player like Moura over him aswell.

I wonder whether Son will become one of MOu's all time favourite players

His work rate & energy are off the charts (cost of entry requirements for Mourinho)

He has lighnting pace and is a superb finisher into the bargain - I'd imagine Mourinho will love having him in the team

Remains to be seen exactly what it does to his FPL output...

But in fairness his FPL output has been relatively modest for 9 of his 10 GW's this season so it may not take much to maintain or even improve under MouMou

My guess is that Mou will indeed love Son but will ask him to work A LOT defensively, more than he had to under Poch. And Son will. But that could hamper his FPL output - the start of this season doesnt really count, am talking abt last season for instance in that comparison.

On the other hand, I expect Mou to want Kane to score goals. Shiiiitloads of them. Will demand he focuses on that and play around and in the box as much as possible. I think there is a Kane-bandwagon coming our way.

In short, under Mou I think best options will prove to be Kane > Alli > Son.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              4 years, 4 months ago

I think Tom made a great point about Mourinho's love of a #10 and how that might re-ignite Alli

I always think of Mourinho's original Chelsea side and the way he had Robben/Duff/Drogba scoring huge & assisting amounts of goals

That was a long time ago though so interested to see just how much defensive work he assigns Son with

Son is a fairly good proxy for the Robben/Duff roles, and Kane obviously isn't a Million miles away from Drogba so he has the raw materials there to form a fairly potent attacking unit

How does he get those fullback slots shored up though? Rose/KWP/Aurier aren't exactly great defensively... I wonder whether he tries Vert at LB and Sanchez RB, or a back 5 even

Dier strikes me as a Mourinho type player too

Can't wait to see ho this works out, very intruiging

Agreed, and me too! Very tempted to jump on Kane straight away tbh but that would suppose getting rid of Sterling + one of in-form Vardy/Abraham/Jimenez for a hit! So... wont do it and will have to hope to not have to regret it. He could destroy WHM tbh.
