Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 13?

With the final international break of 2019 out of the way, Fantasy Premier League managers must once again make big decisions.

The most important one ahead of Gameweek 13 is, naturally, the captaincy.

In a season characterised by difficult debates for the armband, the latest one has followed suit.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you out by analysing the form of the candidates and the defensive capabilities of their upcoming opponents.

Captain Poll

Captain poll results as of Thursday lunch-time

For the second Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) sits at the top of the captain poll results.

That should be no surprise to Fantasy managers, considering that Leicester’s number one centre-forward is in the form of his life.

Over the last four Gameweeks, Vardy has found the net six times and has not blanked since the Gameweek 8 trip to Liverpool.

He is fast becoming a very reliable option for the captaincy as his ownership (36%) continues to rise. 32.9% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 13 captaincy too.

This weekend pits him against a Brighton defence that has kept two clean sheets in their last four at the Amex Stadium, although captain Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) will be missing through suspension.

Adam Webster (£4.4m) is also touch and go to start for the Seagulls.

It looks as if the 14.7% who have voted for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) this weekend are relying on the fixture rather than the player.

Southampton’s 9-0 to defeat at home to Leicester in Gameweek 10 has very much cemented their place amongst the ‘captain against’ category.

However, Aubameyang himself has registered just one attacking return in his last five Premier League matches, scoring against Wolves in Gameweek 11.

Furthermore, Southampton have tended to struggle more in front of their own fans than any way from home recently.

They held Manchester City to just two goals in Gameweek 11 and even managed to earn a 1-1 draw at Wolves in Gameweek 9.

So it will be interesting to see whether they can prove to be frustrating on the road once again when they travel to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.

Not far behind Aubameyang in the captain poll standings is Sadio Mané (£12.1m), who has the backing of 12.9% as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man remains the top-scoring midfielder heading into Gameweek 13 after finding the net late-on against Manchester City last time out.

No Liverpool player has more attacking returns away from home than Mané this season (four) which arguably makes him the most likely to secure a breakthrough against Crystal Palace.

Furthermore, as things stand, he is much more likely to start at Selhurst Park than Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) who comes into Gameweek 13 as an injury doubt and backed by just 2.6% for the captaincy.

Despite a swathe of sales over the international break, a portion of Fantasy managers are keeping faith in Raheem Sterling (£12.0m).

He may have just one attacking return in his last four league starts at home but Chelsea come to the Etihad Stadium still without a clean sheet away from home this season.

That is enough to convince 10.3% of our voters to back Sterling for the captaincy in Gameweek 13.

Heading up what Joe and David would describe as ‘barrel scrapers’, is Harry Kane (£10.8m) who prepares to face West Ham on Saturday lunch-time.

Just 4.5% of you have decided he is the best captain this weekend but interest in his services has certainly increased somewhat with the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

Kane does only have one attacking return in the last five Premier League matches but West Ham’s defensive form has been particularly poor of late.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Son Heung-min (£9.6m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Raúl Jiménez (£7.3m), Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), Sébastien Haller (£7.2m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) are the only other options selected by more than 1% of voters.

How? Trent starting at a -4 meaning even if he gets a cleanie he's only 2 points up... the player coming off the bench could get that. I get Trent can explode but surely it's not easily worth it.

If Liverpool get a cleanie and Chelsea get hammered by City it might be a zero sum, which would make it worth it. And I see that scenario as fairly likely.

Kane far too expensive as a differential. Vardy you should have otherwise likely to get stung on ownership.

          1. soup natsi
            • 9 Years
            4 years, 4 months ago

He's just 1.2m more over Vardy and ownership is the reason why he's a differential in the first place. You're not helping.

          2. Eze Really?
            • 9 Years
            4 years, 4 months ago

Ignore me if I am not helping. I was trying to.
Just think about it. You are getting on a bandwagon based on a change of manager that costs a lot of money. Vardy on the other hand will hurt you big time if he gets points. What I am saying is you are taking 2 risks, not one.

            1. soup natsi
              • 9 Years
              4 years, 4 months ago

I get you mate but risk is the name of the game isn't it, of course it's risky to ignore the high ownership player in form and go for the low ownership player with a new manager. Question is how likely is Kane to outscore Vardy, if you think he's not then fair enough, but cost and ownership are measurable factors that feed to this question, not the answers themselves.

Go for a differential captain you already own. Saves a transfer and the risk is one week only. Mane at 12% vs Vardy at 40% will stir things up, good or bad. A differential is another word for a punt on long odds. Great if it works but generally fails.

We got off to a bad start. Sorry if I offended you. I can be a bit of a know all.
A risk Salah does not play or minutes managed. A perfect time for a diff captain.
Digne could be a beauty. Involved in everything against a side who is poor atm.
If you need to make ground, leave it to a single risk.
I wish you well but I would stay away from Spurs unless Gazza for this week at least.
If he ha Vardy, choose someone else. If he does not, get Vardy.

Hi all, a bit of assistance since I’ve got it in my head that I don’t want triple Chelsea attack on my wildcard:

    Pope, Gazza
    Robbo, Trent, Soy, Baldock, Lord,
    Mane, KDB, Pulisic, Maddison, MOUNT,
    Vardy, Abraham, CONOLLY

For better or worse, I’m tempted to trade out Mount and Connolly for Ings and potentially Djenepo for a bit of fun - is this madness? Djenepo can always be downgraded to upgrade elsewhere.

I always have double keepers, stung in the past.

Tomori is not on my radar, I don’t rate Chelsea defensively and I’m trying to avoid a triple up on their part. Question was mainly about the Mount/Ings aspect

I'd agree about the Chelsea triple up. Djenepo not guaranteed game time, is he? I'd prefer Ward-Prowse over him, but not sure I'd double-up on SOU even with a decent fixture run. Conolly's out for this week, which may be fine, but his fixtures really are dire. Can you stretch to Ayew as playing fodder with a good fixture run and maybe Ward-Prowse or a Villa mid (Grealish or McGinn)?

Seems a waste - Mount by far the best players of all those you'd lose or bring in. Ings is a nice differential atm but I'd hold for now.

Start Robbo then and hold the transfer IMO... I think Frank will set up rather defensively tomorrow

Want to know this too. Athletic reported he hasn’t trained but no word from presser yet that I’ve heard.

Best forward & mid combo for 17.9? (Have Mane, KDB, Vardy & Abraham)

    A. Kane/Auba & Tielemans
    B. Laca & Maddison/Pulisic
    C. Jimi & Son
    D. Jimi & Maddison (Allowing Traore > Martial/Pulisic next week)
    E. Other

D... Kane looks a good punt but I would wait and see what sort of bus Jose will be driving this week before making the move

    2 FT, 0.2 ITB.

    Schmeichel (Button)
    TAA | Lund | Rico | Tomori | Janmaat
    Sterling | Mount | Mane | KDB | Maddison
    Rashford | Conolly | Tammy

No idea what to change, should I burn the FT?

    1) Start Heaton (NEW) or Pope (wat)
    2) Cantwell or Tomori as 1st sub? leaning towards cantwell if there is indication that he starts
    3) Captain sterling, vardy, or rashford?

Any Man Utd fans here? Thoughts on the likelihood of Brandon Williams keeping his place for the Sheff Utd game this weekend? Young back after ban and apparently Shaw back in training (though Solskjaer mentioned lack of match fitness).
I hear that Williams has been getting rave reviews. I’ve had him on my bench for a few weeks. Worth playing this weekend or not? Cheers!

Basically it’s start Williams, Rico or Lowton.

Rico I guess should play vs Wolves at home. Williams away at Sheff Utd but may be benched. Lowton probably on the bench again for Burnley (vs Watford away) so probably not a viable option.

      Thoughts?

Yeah, leaning that way I think. Williams probably too much of a risk (1 point cameo incoming). Cheers!

That's a tough call. Ole may revert to Young for experience as Sheff Utd in good form and will give us a tough game. He'll prob get criticised for doing so as Williams has indeed played well the last couple of games.

However, we have a Europa league match on Thurs so I wouldn't be shocked in Williams gets promised that game and Young starts on Sunday. Shaw won't play.

Anything I can do here or save? Have 1.1 in the bank with 1 FT ...

    Pope
    Lund TAA Chilwell Masuaku Kelly
    Martial Sterling Mane Mount Maddison
    Abraham Jiminez Greenwood

    Cheers

Bench 1 of Mount (mci) Rico (WOL) and Guilbert (NEW)

    Currently leaning towards Mount.

Wow, surprised at you both on this. must have been on another planet these past two weeks. The amount of people who are benching Mount over the likes of Rico, Dendonker, Yarmo SOKARTIS !!!!!!! etc, etc,..........Mount had a very good IB with England and an attacking CFC against a makeshift City defence who will simply try and outscore you is a perfect storm for CFC and Mount.......I predict 3-3

Tielemans out for Maddison, for a hit.

    Not worth it is it?
Or is it worth, it long term?

No way - Tielemans has more attacking returns than Maddison since GW26 when he joined last year and is cheaper.

Literally one of the hardest C decisions this year because nobody stands out!

    A) Vardy
    B) Mane
    C) Sterling

Happy to have all 3 but can't decide

All good options. I'd probably go for Vardy if I had him, he'll be the most popular pick, so will protect yourself from a rank drop if he does well. Owning Mane and Sterling should be enough.

Seriously thinking about a free hit with Auba Laca Kane Rich Digne etc. Poor Chelsea fixture, average Leicester one, no keeper and serious doubt over Salah, no Connolly. Picture might be a bit clearer next week
