Scout Notes

Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 13?

With the final international break of 2019 out of the way, Fantasy Premier League managers must once again make big decisions.

The most important one ahead of Gameweek 13 is, naturally, the captaincy.

In a season characterised by difficult debates for the armband, the latest one has followed suit.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you out by analysing the form of the candidates and the defensive capabilities of their upcoming opponents.

Captain Poll

Captain poll results as of Thursday lunch-time

For the second Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) sits at the top of the captain poll results.

That should be no surprise to Fantasy managers, considering that Leicester’s number one centre-forward is in the form of his life.

Over the last four Gameweeks, Vardy has found the net six times and has not blanked since the Gameweek 8 trip to Liverpool.

He is fast becoming a very reliable option for the captaincy as his ownership (36%) continues to rise. 32.9% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 13 captaincy too.

This weekend pits him against a Brighton defence that has kept two clean sheets in their last four at the Amex Stadium, although captain Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) will be missing through suspension.

Adam Webster (£4.4m) is also touch and go to start for the Seagulls.

It looks as if the 14.7% who have voted for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) this weekend are relying on the fixture rather than the player.

Southampton’s 9-0 to defeat at home to Leicester in Gameweek 10 has very much cemented their place amongst the ‘captain against’ category.

However, Aubameyang himself has registered just one attacking return in his last five Premier League matches, scoring against Wolves in Gameweek 11.

Furthermore, Southampton have tended to struggle more in front of their own fans than any way from home recently.

They held Manchester City to just two goals in Gameweek 11 and even managed to earn a 1-1 draw at Wolves in Gameweek 9.

So it will be interesting to see whether they can prove to be frustrating on the road once again when they travel to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.

Not far behind Aubameyang in the captain poll standings is Sadio Mané (£12.1m), who has the backing of 12.9% as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man remains the top-scoring midfielder heading into Gameweek 13 after finding the net late-on against Manchester City last time out.

No Liverpool player has more attacking returns away from home than Mané this season (four) which arguably makes him the most likely to secure a breakthrough against Crystal Palace.

Furthermore, as things stand, he is much more likely to start at Selhurst Park than Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) who comes into Gameweek 13 as an injury doubt and backed by just 2.6% for the captaincy.

Despite a swathe of sales over the international break, a portion of Fantasy managers are keeping faith in Raheem Sterling (£12.0m).

He may have just one attacking return in his last four league starts at home but Chelsea come to the Etihad Stadium still without a clean sheet away from home this season.

That is enough to convince 10.3% of our voters to back Sterling for the captaincy in Gameweek 13.

Heading up what Joe and David would describe as ‘barrel scrapers’, is Harry Kane (£10.8m) who prepares to face West Ham on Saturday lunch-time.

Just 4.5% of you have decided he is the best captain this weekend but interest in his services has certainly increased somewhat with the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

Kane does only have one attacking return in the last five Premier League matches but West Ham’s defensive form has been particularly poor of late.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Son Heung-min (£9.6m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Raúl Jiménez (£7.3m), Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), Sébastien Haller (£7.2m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) are the only other options selected by more than 1% of voters.

this site is pretty conservative when it comes to something outside the template! So here goes a couple of thoughts:

1 Why not take a punt at Richarlison (c) (in for mount) and then potentially sell him for pulisic or martial

    2. Spurs - general idea is wait and see, which in this case I probably agree. However, it is those decisions, for example get Kane / Son in that make you jump up the ranks!

      Agree with second point
First isn't good, Everton aren't setting the league on fire, plus richa is basically two transfers, being hard pressed for FTs, I'll pass

If you have 2 FT and no other pressing ... spend FT on Rich with potential good points should be ok ... and fun as well

you can get a defender in as well. Also the fact that he always relies on a striker to get the goals. has to be kane?

I’ve thought about this since last week r.e. An armband punt on Richarlison.....I accept the negative points on the Brazilian around Everton’s form and it being 2 transfers but the up side of a brace from a massive differential Captain is certainly intriguing. With my O/R quite high I’m tempted to give it a go to push into the top 5 k.

Looks like Aguero our for either Jiminez (not sure on him though) and either Cantwell/Yarmolenko our for Richa then would be either Maddison or Pulisic in for Richa. Tough one buddy.

aguero will score this GW (if he plays...) but I get your point. He has to go as this rotation is unsustainable.

would you play 4 or 5 mids?

Would be 4-4-2 if I didn’t bring in Jiminez. 3-4-3 if it was a cheap bench striker. I hear ya on Aguero Andres for sure but as you say the rotation with great mid options are there to get.

Agree with both of these. I'm on a WC and have brought in Richarlison. Doubt I'll captain him but I plan to bring in Pulisic for GW14. Those who hopped on to Vardy before the Burnley game reaped the rewards. If Kane and/or Son hit form, those who go for them early on will be generously rewarded.

My genuine feeling is that the Salah injury is being slightly overplayed.
Hearing Klopp say he needs to see today's session before making a decision is one thing, but he also said if that wasn't the case he wouldn't have said if he was not available anyway.

I believe Salah and Robbo will both play. After a 2 week rest I'm sure they'll both want to play and Klopp could easily take Salah off after an hour or so to keep him fresh and match fit. These feelings are the reason why I won't be losing points to move Mo on.

I'm also hoping the Team News lineup for Arsenal is spot on. Auba and Lacca should be up top in a 2 every week. They love each other more than Yorke and Cole did. Auba (C) and out

Will keep a keen eye on how Jose uses Son in the West Ham game. If he is stationed very wide and doing a lot of defensive work I will be prepared to lose him next GW.

I agree, just caught up on all the news, i reckon by the sounds of it Mo will start bit may come off after an hour minimum at least.

Announcing Salah is out will get all the headlines and give the opposition a mental boost. I think Klopp has played it well. Wouldn’t be surprised with a Salah benching to ease him in

I also wouldn't mind as long as he was in the squad. I remember when he was rested against Stoke and came on to score a brace in 10 mins or so. I'm sure PVA will be hoping Salah doesn't make it

Or he could start him on the bench. The fact he did not train with the rest of the squad yesterday has to be a concern. Him and Robbo were left to jog around when the serious stuff started , no ?

I don't read too much into that mate. I believe today's session is where it would have got serious when it came to decisions. The whole point of it is to keep the opposition guessing I suppose

I have a midfield of Salah, Mane, KDB, Pulisic and Maddison.

I feel I should transfer Salah out for 1 gameweek without losing points or value, that means I can get any other midfielder in his place. Currently my best thinking is to get Sterling in, what do you guys think? Seems to me a lot of you are transferring him out is why I ask 🙂

Not worth all the trouble in my opinion in a GW where it looks to be rather uninspired anyway, and losing him for Sterling of all people is a no go for me. Others will disagree there but i’m glad i ditched him anyway.

My worry is that Pulisic doesnt play, and I really doubt Salah will either, in which case my bench of Tomori, Kelly and Greenwood woudl have to be utilized..

Pulisic is in contention. CHO not so much.
Salah will play I think. His minutes will be managed.

    Gazzaniga
    Soyuncu, Rico, Janmaat
    Sterling, KDB, Mount, Maddison
    Abraham, Auba, Vardy
    Pope, Lundstram, Tomori, Dendoncker

2 FT. 0.5 in the bank.

I'm struggling with transfers this week. Don't want to lose Sterling for Mane this week because i can see him doing well. Any suggestions?

Also think i will captain Auba as a differential.

Nice line up Rock agree Auba Cpt
But with no Pool I would start working to get Mane and TAA next week
Your'e starting Gazz so downgrade Pope to a 4 to get the ball rolling
Next gw lose a MC mid ad make decision from there

    A) Mount to Richa Captaib as a GW punt (plays Norwich) and then get Pulisic
    B) Just get Pulisic
    C) Save and play Rico instead of Mount (4-3-3)
    D) Save and play Mount

    Ryan
    Robbo* - VVD - Lundstram - Chilwell
    Salah* - KDB - Maddison - McGinn
    Abraham - Vardy
    (Button - Tomori - Hayden - Connolly*)

    A) risk Robbo & Salah being injured and play Tomori & Hayden from the bench
    B) do Salah > Mané for -4

Sometimes you over think these things. Was tempted by Mane as captain, then Sterling against a leaky Chelsea away defence, but if in doubt captain the man with form on his side and form of 11.5 makes it a no-brainer. #vardyparty
