Mourinho starts Alli as FPL managers hope for Kane resurgence

Jose Mourinho has named his first XI as Tottenham Hotspur manager, with few surprises in the ex-Chelsea and Manchester United chief’s selection.

Harry Kane (£10.8m) unsurprisingly leads the line, with FPL managers set to keep a keen eye on the England striker’s positioning under his new boss.

Dele Alli (£8.4m) looks set to line up as the ‘No.10’ in a likely 4-2-3-1 formation.

On the midfielder, Mourinho said yesterday:

“I asked him if he was Dele or Dele’s brother. He told me he was Dele. ‘OK,’ I said. ‘Play like Dele’.” – Jose Mourinho

Son Heung-min (£9.6m) and Lucas Moura (£7.0m) should staff the flanks either side of Dele, which leaves contract rebel Christian Eriksen (£8.7m) to warm the bench alongside Danny Rose (£5.4m).

“I need to understand what is in Christian’s mind and heart.” – Jose Mourinho

Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.5m) is between the sticks as Spurs’ only fit senior goalkeeper, Brandon Austin on the bench. The Argentinian could potentially provide a budget source of points if Mourinho has the desired effect on what has been a leaky Spurs defence up until now.

Jan Vertonghen (£5.2m) is not part of the matchday squad due to injury, so Toby Alderweireld (£5.4m) is partnered in central defence by Davinson Sanchez (£5.3m).

Serge Aurier (£4.8m) gets the nod at right-back, while Ben Davies (£5.4m) makes the XI after impressing for Wales over the international break.

Harry Winks (£5.3m) and Eric Dier (£4.9m) make up the remainder of Mourinho’s initial XI. Tanguy Ndombele (£5.9m) also misses out through injury.

Manuel Pellegrini has stuck with under-fire keeper Roberto (£4.4m) despite several unsatisfactory displays between the sticks for the Hammers.

Mark Noble (£5.0m) has recovered from a knock to take his place in midfield, behind attacking trio Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.9m), Robert Snodgrass (£5.2m) and Felipe Anderson (£6.8m). Pellegrini could use a variation of formations ahead of his back four, most likely 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1.

Angelo Obgonna (£4.5m) replaces Fabian Balbuena (£4.3m) at centre-back, while the other change for the Irons sees Pablo Fornals (£6.0m) drop out for Yarmolenko. Michail Antonio (£6.9m) has recovered from injury to make the bench at the London Stadium.

Line-ups

West Ham United XI: Roberto; Cresswell, Diop, Ogbonna, Fredericks; Rice, Noble; Yarmolenko, Snodgrass, Anderson; Haller.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Gazzaniga; Davies, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Aurier; Winks, Dier; Son, Dele, Lucas; Kane.

It’s certainly an interesting game of chicken that Mark (and all Vardy non owners) are playing

It’s just a question of who swerves first - their teams or the relentless points juggernaut that is Jamie Vardy since 26th Feb’19

Vardy will be £10m soon. What will Mark do?

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

Time will tell... I remember in pre season saying that a big reason I was so interested in Vardy for this season was actually as much Brendan Rodgers rather than purely Vardy himself

It’s not all that long ago (well 6 or 7 years, but time does fly) that Rodgers took a different premier league team to within inches of a title, with another extremely talented striker reaping extreme FPL benefits from being Rodger’s attacking talisman

We kept expecting that striker’s output to relax a little that season, but he just kept going and finished with 31G 17A from the 33 games he was allowed to play after his massive ban for an extremely unsavoury incident with a local rival had finished

I don’t think Vardy will finish with quite that many returns obviously (say what you want about Mr. Suarez’s temperament and disciplinary record,p, but he was/is an EXTREME once in a generation talent... although he also had the FPL price tag to go with that which Vardy doesn’t have to shoulder)...

But equally Vardy must already be on 25+ returns from Rodgers 23-ish games so it’ll be interesting to see if that regression does arrive or does the Rodgers factor keep him ticking

Either way he’s already paid his way and then some for those who got in at 9.0 anyways

The comparison with Liverpool's SAS season is so valid. Just like then, Rodgers had no European midweek games and had 7 days prepare for each game.

If you look at Vardy's FPL Goal Involvement since Rodgers took over, it's simply staggering. The points aren't being shared between Sturridge and Salah this time. Vardy is hogging them all.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              4 years, 4 months ago

Exactly - and even those who are holding off in anticipation of “regression” - it may not be wise - it’s a very broad term and it could drive folks to lose sight of the fact that “regression” in isolation isn’t necessarily always an automatic negative for pure FPL purposes

For example, Vardy could go from scoring 92 points in his first 12 games, to scoring 82 in his next 12 games...

That would be a “regression” (of over 10%!), and it also would be a direct regression specific to his FPL points into the bargain (rather than an indirect regression to one of his underlying statistics, such as goal conversion which isn’t directly linked to his FPL points)...

But even with that “regression” he’d still be churning out points like nobody’s business for a 9.0

It’s a tricky situation for non owners at the minute for sure, but I’m sure Mark has a thought process behind it

What I'm saying is Mark just think Maddison is a better option than Vardy. Coverage presupposes a superior asset.

Where it works is defenders who share one.

      17/18: 28%

Called this lineup in a previous thread (well, I picked Ndombele over Winks, but he's out).

    Davies over Rose.
    Alli as the #10.
    No Eriksen.
Dier back in the line up as the "Makelele".
Son and Moura on the flanks.

I'm also guessing Aurier is on a very, very short leash.

Kane, Son, Alli and Gazza could all be template-breakers from now on.

I have Martial looking to get Pulisic. I think Martial is likely better because he's nailed. Pulisic is potentially a rotation and injury risk.

Someone just sent me a screen shot of Dele Alli’s tweet from
    2012;

“Surely I can’t be the only one who thinks Mourinho is overrated and cocky.. it just make you look like a bad manager. I’m glad I’ll never have to work with him”

Let's weigh up my pre-GW transfer options:

    2 FTs:

    Son + Pulisic
    Firmino + Pulisic
    Rashford + Alli

So, so surreal seeing Jose in the Spurs dugout. Will take a long while before this sinks in...and of course I'm not even a Spurs fan!

i have no clue how Aurier has survived. i mean look how Jose threw Luke shaw under the bus and he's a league above Aurier.

Guess Salah isn't template or Son
Mousset is a good pick too with the fixtures IMO

That's a very good team he has. I like his picks. Doubling on Salah and Mane also something I'm very much thinking about. This week will show!

Dropping Eriksen is a very good move from Mourinho. He's looked disinterested the whole season and lowering the standard of the midfield
