Chunk of top 10k managers ride Vardy’s luck for captaincy

43.6% of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers were handed some much-needed luck on Saturday afternoon.

That was the percentage of those at the top level of the game who captained Jamie Vardy (£9.6m), more than any other option.

After assisting an Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) goal, the Leicester City forward missed a penalty which was converted by James Maddison (£7.5m).

That was set to reduce Vardy’s score by two points, with three added back on for the Fantasy assist.

However, completely outside of the player’s control, both a number of his colleagues and Brighton players encroached on the penalty area, forcing the referee to order a retake.

That wiped off the missed penalty from Vardy’s record, as well as the assist, and allowed him to score his seventh goal in five matches.

With a missed penalty no longer on his record, it also allowed Vardy to claim himself maximum bonus.

Therefore, the encroachment helped Vardy captainers secure a six-point swing, rounded up to 12 by the armband.

Meanwhile, Selhurst Park saw Sadio Mané (£12.1m) reward the 23.8% of top 10k managers who backed him for the captaincy.

With Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) rooted to the bench, the Senegalese was the primary goal threat and he duly delivered towards the end of the first half.

However, he was still four points short of Vardy’s total after that strange turn of events at the Amex Stadium.

The third-most popular skipper at this level was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) who, as has been characteristic of him recently, disappointed his backers.

Just under 8% of the top 10k gave the Arsenal man the armband against Southampton and were probably hoping for slightly more than one assist, which was just his second attacking return since Gameweek 8.

As the underlying data suggested might happen, Aubameyang was outshone by his colleague Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) who scored twice and secured maximum bonus points too.

While the captaincy separates the fortunes of many managers in the top 10k for Gameweek 13, there were very little changes in the so-called template over the international break.

The top five most-popular defenders at this level have not changed from Gameweek 12 to 13.

It is still comprised of John Lundstram (£4.9m), Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.9m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Martin Kelly (£4.1m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m).

However, the ownership figures have admittedly been tweaked within that group.

Just 38% of the top 10k managers were in possession of Söyüncü for the 2-0 win over Arsenal, but this rose to 51% for Leicester’s 2-0 win over Brighton, the Foxes’ fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Meanwhile, it was slightly more disappointing for Alexander-Arnold and Rico owners as neither side kept a clean sheet.

Despite providing plenty of chances for his team-mates once again, Liverpool’s right-back continues to be outperformed by colleague Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), who now has four attacking returns in five matches following an assist at Crystal Palace.

In the midfield, the template continues to be settled around five players.

However, there has been a shift towards Mané, whose ownership in the top 10k jumped from 69.5% to 80.1% over the international break.

Those who made the move from Salah to Mané were instantly rewarded as the Egyptian spent Gameweek 13 on the bench as his colleague scored nine points.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne dropped from 73.1% to 70.6%, while Sterling fell by an even larger amount, from 44.3% to 35.4%.

The Belgian managed to dish out some punishment with his first goal since Gameweek 6 in the Saturday evening clash with Chelsea but Sterling was denied the chance to by another questionable VAR offside call.

Conversely, a goal against Arsenal in Gameweek 12 triggered a rise in popularity for Maddison.

He rose from 31.4% ownership among the top 10k to 43.8% for Gameweek 13, but just as those captaining Vardy were a little lucky, Maddison owners were the victims of the corresponding misfortune.

He was the one who nodded home the rebound from the missed penalty, only to have it chalked off by the encroachment from both Leicester and Brighton.

With Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) largely outperforming his colleagues in recent weeks, it will be interesting to see if the decline in Mason Mount‘s (£6.8m) ownership will continue.

He was in 54.6% of top 10k teams for Gameweek 12 but just 48.7% of them for Gameweek 13, in which he featured only as a second-half substitute against Manchester City.

Finally, Raúl Jiménez (£7.4m) continues to justify a burst in his ownership among the top 10k, displacing Aubameyang as the third-most-popular forward at this level.

    KdB -> Son for free?

I imagine makes sense to wait till end of gw and then some, but don’t want to miss a price rise for a transfer I’m 90% convinced in.

It means for the first time this season that there is a nailed City striker and his ownership sits at 1.5%.

Pep will still shuffle the rest as he just can't help himself.

Asked this easrlier but just looking for a few more opinions please guys.

    Pope
    Soy - TAA - Lundstram
    Mount - Salah - KDB - Mane - Tielemans
    Vardy - Tammy
    ___________________________________________
    Button: Tomori: Rico: Connolly

    A) Salah + Connolly > Son + Jiminez (-4)
    B) Salah + Rico/Soy > Son + Robertson (-4)
    C) Salah + Mount > Son + Pulisic (-4)
    D) kKDB > Pulisic/Son

A would leave me with a much monumental benching headache so not fully keen on it.
B creates a pool defence double up, but we all know how those clean sheets are working
    C sounds ok i guess?
D straight swap which leaves me City’less but fine with that.

However with the team stacked with a lot of home players next GW, shall i just roll the FT?

    Cheers gents.

Cheers bud, i like A as well. Good moves on your behalf. If i wanted to do A i'd definitely be priced out by 0.1. It's just, arrghh! Salah is a huge differential in my ML, hardly anyone has both mane and salah, don't want it ot bite me in the behind 🙂

I had the same thought about owning both Salah and Mane with the fixture run-in.

But you can’t have both if Salah is clearly still struggling, the no-show earlier forced my hand. (Also, Vardy is too essential for me at this point)

Not wanting to jump on a specific post on here, but..

I often see comments like XXXis great value, when the player in question is returning okay-ish at best, but not really that much in terms of actual form - and definitely not enough o the context of them being 9, 10 or even more million in cost.

Ive seen it a few times in the last few days re KDB (and some other city assets to a lesser extend recently too)

Okay so KDB is a great player. Obviously.
But his form just now is 4.2. That’s what you’ll have got if you’ve held on to him.

    And his value(form) is 0.4

Compare that with Puli or Perez who have value(form) of 1.3. (Or Madds, Tielemans, Moutinho, etc around 1.0)

So those guys are basically delivering 2 or 3 times more points per million cost than KDB.

For context, just in case you cared, yes sterling is worse with a form of 4, and value(form) of 0.3 (so 4 times less delivered per million spent than Puli / Perez)

    Nope. Mahrez is no better.

    Nor is Dilva.

    Yes. Kun is even worse!

    Thoughts?

can't have them all, so you need a mix of
      - value (points per m) - lundstrum, soy, tom, rico, tielemans
      - coverage - liverpool, city, chelsea, leicester
Within coverage you need to cover explosive players who can get 15 points+ = Vardy, Mane, Sterling, Son, Aguero, Salah etc. But these need to be held at the right time, as you can captain them.
Sterling from eye test has been out on wing, when there are many. If you can't captain a player at 12m.
I think you are right about KDB too, i don't think i'd captain him but i think that's more about city rather than the player currently.

Form is 4. Expensive. Lots of on form alternatives. Can always get him back.

Looking at the next 6 fixtures I'd predict Pulisic to score better. Could be worth the extra cost getting him back if you gain enough points

New coach effect and having been burned by Son last year. No way am I ditching Auba before Norwich.

I'm kneejerking real hard with the -8 but I guess it's worth. I'm getting rid of 2 players in bad form for 3 that are at least decent.
Auba, Maddison, Sterling -> KDB, Vardy, Son

I would just do Auba, Sterling > Vardy, Son

Maddison has to go. I already have triple LEI. Maddison and Tielemans double up was just my plan to make up for not having Vardy, but I messed up.

No way of keeping Maddison?! He’s a definite lock for me

    Wilder vs Ortiz 2

Who wins in what round or will it go the distance?

Yeah it is hard not to fancy Wilder in that fight but Ortiz really put it up to him in the first fight and nearly had him out before Wilder clawed his way back into the bout.

You just never know what can happen in heavyweight boxing, one punch can change everything.

Ok, if you had Salah, along with Mane, but the rest of your ML rivals have only Mane, would you keep Salah, or still move him on?

      Keep

Do you think he will score really well?

Honestly, i don't know, i'd like to hope he would, but it's this pesky ankle issue of his, i don't want to delude myself saying 'it's nothing', yet he continues to be monitored and protected. Even with two weeks just off was still unable to make today, leaves a sour taste.

I wouldn’t have salah on current form and given injury concern

Especially if I had mane (I do)

Chers James, makes sense i suppose, and he's not the only player my ML rivals don't have, a lot without Son + Pulisic also

No worries mate. My front 7

          Mane Son Pulisic Maddison
          Vardy Abraham Jimmy

Tielemans first on my bench - winter is coming...

Awesome front 7. I suppose the only reason if i did a rushed move now would be if i wanted Jimmy along with Son, and even though he'd make a nice addition, i like my mids too much in the 352 setup i have.
Can always ditch either Salah, KDB later in the week as i feel i need more time to decide.

Too expensive to have both imo.. Better to get Son and spread funds

Yeah true, and it's a strong reason to hold aint it. I hope it works as well as i've decided to hold off just for now at least until midweek games are done with.

What time do price rises usually happen, or can they be any time? Literally the only thing stopping me from taking my -8 is that it's a -8, but I will have to do it before the price rises.
