Chunk of top 10k managers ride Vardy’s luck for captaincy

43.6% of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers were handed some much-needed luck on Saturday afternoon.

That was the percentage of those at the top level of the game who captained Jamie Vardy (£9.6m), more than any other option.

After assisting an Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) goal, the Leicester City forward missed a penalty which was converted by James Maddison (£7.5m).

That was set to reduce Vardy’s score by two points, with three added back on for the Fantasy assist.

However, completely outside of the player’s control, both a number of his colleagues and Brighton players encroached on the penalty area, forcing the referee to order a retake.

That wiped off the missed penalty from Vardy’s record, as well as the assist, and allowed him to score his seventh goal in five matches.

With a missed penalty no longer on his record, it also allowed Vardy to claim himself maximum bonus.

Therefore, the encroachment helped Vardy captainers secure a six-point swing, rounded up to 12 by the armband.

Meanwhile, Selhurst Park saw Sadio Mané (£12.1m) reward the 23.8% of top 10k managers who backed him for the captaincy.

With Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) rooted to the bench, the Senegalese was the primary goal threat and he duly delivered towards the end of the first half.

However, he was still four points short of Vardy’s total after that strange turn of events at the Amex Stadium.

The third-most popular skipper at this level was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) who, as has been characteristic of him recently, disappointed his backers.

Just under 8% of the top 10k gave the Arsenal man the armband against Southampton and were probably hoping for slightly more than one assist, which was just his second attacking return since Gameweek 8.

As the underlying data suggested might happen, Aubameyang was outshone by his colleague Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) who scored twice and secured maximum bonus points too.

While the captaincy separates the fortunes of many managers in the top 10k for Gameweek 13, there were very little changes in the so-called template over the international break.

The top five most-popular defenders at this level have not changed from Gameweek 12 to 13.

It is still comprised of John Lundstram (£4.9m), Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.9m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Martin Kelly (£4.1m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m).

However, the ownership figures have admittedly been tweaked within that group.

Just 38% of the top 10k managers were in possession of Söyüncü for the 2-0 win over Arsenal, but this rose to 51% for Leicester’s 2-0 win over Brighton, the Foxes’ fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Meanwhile, it was slightly more disappointing for Alexander-Arnold and Rico owners as neither side kept a clean sheet.

Despite providing plenty of chances for his team-mates once again, Liverpool’s right-back continues to be outperformed by colleague Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), who now has four attacking returns in five matches following an assist at Crystal Palace.

In the midfield, the template continues to be settled around five players.

However, there has been a shift towards Mané, whose ownership in the top 10k jumped from 69.5% to 80.1% over the international break.

Those who made the move from Salah to Mané were instantly rewarded as the Egyptian spent Gameweek 13 on the bench as his colleague scored nine points.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne dropped from 73.1% to 70.6%, while Sterling fell by an even larger amount, from 44.3% to 35.4%.

The Belgian managed to dish out some punishment with his first goal since Gameweek 6 in the Saturday evening clash with Chelsea but Sterling was denied the chance to by another questionable VAR offside call.

Conversely, a goal against Arsenal in Gameweek 12 triggered a rise in popularity for Maddison.

He rose from 31.4% ownership among the top 10k to 43.8% for Gameweek 13, but just as those captaining Vardy were a little lucky, Maddison owners were the victims of the corresponding misfortune.

He was the one who nodded home the rebound from the missed penalty, only to have it chalked off by the encroachment from both Leicester and Brighton.

With Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) largely outperforming his colleagues in recent weeks, it will be interesting to see if the decline in Mason Mount‘s (£6.8m) ownership will continue.

He was in 54.6% of top 10k teams for Gameweek 12 but just 48.7% of them for Gameweek 13, in which he featured only as a second-half substitute against Manchester City.

Finally, Raúl Jiménez (£7.4m) continues to justify a burst in his ownership among the top 10k, displacing Aubameyang as the third-most-popular forward at this level.

Anyone considering Pope to Guaita after next week?
Guaita played 90 minutes 19 times in the PL against non top 6+ Leicester this season, keeping 10 CS. Won't play any of those in the next 7 and only 2 in the next 16.

More Norwich come in form, more they are prone to score against them IMO with the style of play.
Maybe Lundstram feels too much, but Vardy & Jimenez looks nailed on for © unless Injured by then

    GW18 going to be fun:

    - Liverpool not playing
    - Man City vs Leicester
    - Spurs vs Chelsea

5 best teams in the PL with no or tough fixtures. Man Utd away at Watford might provide some points.

I'm not a fan of the double up. I mean sure they have been defending great but they have also been overperforming the stats and they are a promoted team. It just feels too risky but the fixtures are so nice.

      No I don’t think so

Ryan doesn’t have better fixtures really and Pope looks ok over festive period.

Henderson and Guaita look better but it doesn’t seem a priority move if you ride out 15/6

Now after looking at it again I don't see Brighton keeping many clean sheets in the near future. Gazza and Henderson aren't really long term choices. Palace's fixtures are really good for a long time.

Wow another GW, another rollercoaster 🙂

Seeing Vardy misses the penalty and Maddison getting a goal was the peak of the day (I also have Vardy but many of my many leagues had him captain - I was on Mané and also have Maddison)
So that cost me like maybe 20points turnover if not more 🙁
Than that Sterling last minute goal disallowance kind of compensated (still some people in my ML have him and a few captained him) so this absurd VAR decision worked well for me this time 🙂

Overall I expect a green arrow with 68pts so far and Lord Lundy to play!

How is you GW so far?

Honestly I'm not a fan of double pool Defense Because firstly they're not keeping any clean sheets and just getting them for attacking returns is not worth it.

Secondly there are other cheap defenders providing excellent value and u could end up benching them.

I'd just do Digne Mount to Soy/Chilwell and Pulisic

Do you think it’s worth -4 for Mount to Pulisic then?

I don’t see why you hurry up to get rid of Digne - I am seeing a very good starting 11 at least for the next couple of fixtures. Who are you benching even if you had the 0.2 to get Robbo?!

    Hi gang

Would you do Haller and cantwell to ings and tielemans for free?

    Would leave me with

    Pope Adrian

Van djik. Lundstrom Rico soy timori

Salah de brunye sterling mount tielemans

    Ings Abraham Connolly

Obviously quite frustrated as sterling owner but if aguero is injured could be a blessing and feels wrong getting rid ahead of Newcastle. I'm also on the wrong Liverpool player but if Salah is fit at home to Brighton he could also do damage so they don't feel like priority moves just yet.

Yeh I don’t see any point really in keeping him another week unless it’s searching time.
I don’t really want Moyes long term but could be a good stop gap until the end of the season to shore defending up and build a little confidence.

Cantwell to Pulisic would be tempting. Could lead to benched points and weekly headaches but could be a good differential having a strong bench with games coming thick and fast.

Bit of an early post fail there.

Meant to say Salah is a bit of a differential already but this injury issue is unlikely to go away quickly as Klopp will have to have him available with crazy fixtures coming up.

Nope, Mount will play in that number 10 role when Chelsea have easier fixtures like they do now in this run in.

Against the bigger teams they'll have a 433 starting with a power mid 3

I'm being stubborn i guess, but having my team under Mou for 2/3 years, i can feel that Spurs won't keep scoring goals for fun. They need to tighten up the Defense which will come at the expense of attacking flair IMO. I'm at least giving it 2 weeks when Spurs play United that is

It’s a fair point and I agree I don’t expect Mou to suddenly become Klopp or Pep. He’ll get frustrated with players and revert back to his old ways. You may be right to avoid for now

1.1M to 270K in a few weeks. Down to be bold with hits, getting in Pereira, Chilwell, Martial, but mainly getting mane in 9, ditching all city and finally getting Vardy in 12 and capping the last fortnight.
