Grealish back on the FPL radar after eye-catching return from injury

Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Conor Hourihane (£5.7m), Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Jack Grealish (£5.9m), Hourihane
  • Bonus: Hourihane x3, Frederic Guilbert (£4.4m) x2, Matt Targett (£4.4m) x1

The final match of Gameweek 13 was the story of Conor Hourihane‘s (£5.7m) dead-ball expertise and Newcastle United’s inability to deal with it.

A non-descript game seemed to have all the hallmarks of a goalless draw in the first half an hour, with the Magpies’ trademark backs-to-the-wall approach to away fixtures initially working well.

There hadn’t really been a chance of note until Conor Hourihane (£5.7m) struck a superb free-kick past Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) after 32 minutes, with the Irish midfielder turning provider soon after when assisting Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) from another set-piece situation.

During the international break, we discussed how Villa had struggled at free-kicks and corners with Hourihane out of the side.

For all his limitations as a central midfielder, Hourihane’s dead-ball deliveries do give Villa an extra attacking dimension and they were ultimately the difference between the two sides on Monday.

He could indeed have had another assist late on, had Wesley (£6.0m) not fired at Dubravka from point-blank range.

Dean Smith said of the Ireland international after full-time:

He wasn’t happy when I left him out of the game against Manchester City away and I understand why, but it’s a squad game and I have decisions to make.

I knew we’d spend an awful lot of time defending and today I knew we’d have a lot more of the ball.

He’s answered me back in the best way. He scored against Norwich, he scored against Brighton and he’s scored again today, so I’m really pleased for him.

The Magpies, meanwhile, have conceded from a set play in each of the last three Gameweeks.

No side allowed more headed chances or efforts from set-piece situations in 2018/19 and a change of regime hasn’t improved much, with Steve Bruce’s outfit again joint-bottom for headed opportunities conceded this season and in the bottom seven for attempts from corners and free-kicks conceded.

Indeed, over the last six Gameweeks, no other club has allowed more of either.

This may well be of interest to owners of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m), with Manchester City up next for Newcastle in Gameweek 14.

Aston Villa assets may not be top of many Fantasy managers’ shopping lists at present, with the Villans third-bottom of our Season Ticker over the next four matches.

There are some appetising matches beyond that, though, and Jack Grealish (£5.9m) and John McGinn (£5.9m) may well be key midfield targets come Gameweek 18.

The returning Grealish, back after a month out, was at the centre of most of Villa’s play on Monday, having more touches than any other player on show.

It was a little ironic that, for all of his creativity and goal threat against the Magpies, his sole attacking return was an assist for a lay-off for Hourihane’s free-kick.

That was his fifth FPL contribution in six starts and the move to a narrow left-wing role from Gameweek 7 has only boosted his appeal.

Grealish is also the most fouled player in the Premier League this season, which, as we’ve seen with Wilfried Zaha (£6.6m) at Crystal Palace, can be a source of Fantasy assists.

Unsurprisingly, it was Grealish who won both of Villa’s free-kicks for the goals.

Smith said of his talismanic midfielder after full-time:

He’s a constant threat and he moves around the pitch really well into positions where people don’t want to come and tackle him.

The opposition get frustrated and two free-kicks against him end up with two goals for us.

Knowing Jack, he’ll be disappointed he hasn’t got on the scoresheet himself.

McGinn, the highest-owned player in the Monday night game, blanked for the fifth time in six Gameweeks but he too was a threat, if only in the last quarter of an hour when the game opened up.

The Scotland international fired narrowly wide from inside the box as the match entered stoppage time before striking the woodwork with the final kick of the game.

The fit-again Tom Heaton (£4.5m) and Villa kept their first clean sheet since Gameweek 5, meanwhile, although one look at the short-term fixture list will deter many from reconsidering the Villans’ defensive options for now.

Newcastle themselves have a tricky double-header against City and Sheffield United coming up and will likely not appeal to FPL bosses until Gameweek 16.

The Magpies had scored six goals in the three previous Gameweeks but five of those strikes were by defenders; not a sustainable source of goals, you’d think.

The occasionally brilliant Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m) was by some distance the pick of United’s players, registering more than three times as many take-ons as anyone else at Villa Park and testing Heaton with a curling, 46th-minute effort.

With a continued lack of support around him, however, attacking returns may be irregular at best, despite his eye-catching trickery.

A Federico Fernandez (£4.4m) header and an Andy Carroll (£5.4m) volley – both of which were saved – were as close as the Magpies came to ruining Heaton’s clean sheet but in truth, Villa looked more likely to score a third than concede a consolation.

Bruce cited the absence of skipper Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) as a mitigating factor, saying:

The first half, in particular, we did not do enough with or without the ball. We felt we were harshly done by with two free-kicks, but the way Conor Hourihane has executed them made it a difficult night.

Conor is very good, I have seen it many times and he has the accuracy and power to score. The second one, our defenders have to defend better, too many stood and watched it.

Jamaal Lascelles is our captain and has been playing very well. Last week the defenders were excellent but you are always going to miss your best players.

    Thought on these dilemmas

    1) Son or Kdb? Don’t have any other Spurs/city cover. Bought kdb at 9.5m if that makes a diff

    2A) Mount + Rashford or
    2B) Pulisic + Jimenez

      1) Tough to call without hindsight. Try not to get too attached to how much value you have tied up in a player if you think another will outscore him mid to long term

I'm leaning towards Son but you've got a few £ tied into KDB so I'd be skeptical in your situation.

      Pulisic + Jimenez.

      1) If it was a question of who to bring in at this stage then I'd say Son over KDB but if you have KDB already I wouldn't take him out personally if that makes sense.

Son. I know it sounds like captain hindsight but I got him 2 weeks ago on a wildcard. Everyone said it was crazy to drop KDB but it’s been a profitable move already and helped me climb the ranks.

Son was in crazy form last Xmas too

I'm stuck on the same dilemma as you with regards to KDB. if I want to bring him back in its going to cost me 0.4m extra. I think Son has a higher ceiling. Not sure what to do arrrhh

Playing TAA, Robbo and Soy. Lund statistically has the worst fixture for an attacker or defender in the top 10 EPL teams for this GW, so it's the one last week I feel I can get away with it. He can score or assist, yes. A haul isn't as likely

He's been a flat-track bully so far, anyway. GWs 15 to 19 are perfect (except his suspension)

      TAA better than Pereira
      Mount better than Moura
      Sterling better than Pulisic

Not worth getting Kane in and taking -8 to downgrade three players

      1. Athletic Nasherbo

TAA has not been performing better than Pereira who now is in a top 3 side keeping clean sheets.

We will compare Mount to Pulisic then considering you’ve decided to simply compare- Puli far superior.

Sterling performing like a 7m mid so yeah I’ll take my chances with Moura

        Kane will come good.

Form follows fixtures. Look at Zaha's last 5 games. MCI ars LEI che LIV.

He scored 10 points vs Arsenal mind.

Part of being a really good FPL manager is getting players in BEFORE they haul. Sometimes it won't work out, but when it does, you can really gain ranks. As long as you're not neglecting essential players, this is the way to get a really good score.

                  Ah was looking at Milivojevic.

But yeah that doesn't bode well I guess. We will see. I'm not set on it. Ideally Martial comes to life and scores big vs Villa and does enough to prove he should stay.

But CPL are the differential team to consider. Zaha and Mili are interesting and hey, we need some differentials because by god every single team seems to have the same like 9 players.

I will have Pulisic this week. Ignoring Maddison for the time being. His heat map and shooting outside the box are not appealing. He's easily the worst out of the midfield trio - Martial, Pulisic, Maddison imo.

I should explain the -12, Camzy

My entire bench got injured/out-of-favour in one GW, so I needed some spring cleaning without a wildcard. Janmaat, Connolly and Nakamba became Pulisic, Greenwood and Williams... Allowing Soy or Lund (or Madders sometimes) to be the first sub in these hectic winter times, and at least a point or two from the two other subs... While enabling me to afford Pulisic for Nakamba after going Sterling to Son. So this was more of a necessity than those my more luxurious hits 😀

I think it's unnecessary. A lot of those transfers you made don't impact your starting XI.

                  Sterling > Son + Nakamba > Willian (-4)

Would have done just fine. And stopped you losing 8 points on bench players who don't affect your starting players and will be benched anyway. Also gives you Willian over Pulisic which could be an interesting differential.

Tempted to WC even though i have 2ft's and 0m itb. In hindsight, wish i had pulled the trigger on Sat to save some funds

    Current team:
    Pope -- HEATON
Taa Lundy Tomori -- Rico LASCELLES
Kdb STERLING MARTIAL MOUNT -- Cantwell
    Vardy Tammy RASHFORD

    Potential WC team:
    Pope -- BUTTON
Taa Lundy Tomori -- Rico MONTOYA
Kdb MANE SON PULISIC -- Cantwell
    Vardy Tammy INGS

    Abraham Jimenez Vardy

    4m - Lundstram Cantwell Rico

    Cheers

    Chilwell Coady mings Janmaat Tomori

    2.7 in the bank. 1ft
What should I do after the next game week?
    A. Coady > taa
    B. Mings > taa
    C. Connolly > 6.x attacker? And who?

Keep Martial for GW 14 or transfer him with Son for a -8 (I already did another transfer). Money not an issue ...

I reckon Perez might have turned the corner looking at his stats the last 4 weeks.

Maybe he will now be the bandwagon he was pre season?

    Penalty touches=2nd
    Goals=2nd
    Big C=1st
    SoT=3rd
Min/chance better than Martial, Mane, pulisic,Sterling and KdB

It's good to see he's now becoming an option, so many of us tipped him pre-season.

Happy with your Heaton points? 🙂

I don't like how Rodgers treats his wingers

High chance of anything from 1 point to 24 points from Perez, and it's quite difficult to know what you'll get and/or when, so he really tests the patience when 90-minute assets are firing

How risky in a scale of 0 to 10 is a move from abraham to Rashford in gw 15?

On a -4 after doing Aguero, Hayden, Mount -> Mousset, Son, Pulisic. How’s the team looking?

      Pope
      TAA Lund Soy
      Mane KDB Son Pulisic Maddison
      Vardy (c) Abraham

Button Mousset Janmaat Rico (0ft 1.5m itb)

Can’t see many ways to use the money itb for future moves - mid-priced/low premium options performing too well. Will probably just look at getting in Henderson and Tomori

      I can do:

Wildcard burning a hole in my pocket. Don't like the idea of WC in 19 purely as it's bloody Xmas and don't want to be stuck on my phone tinkering.

Go for it or not worth it for 5 players?

      HENDERSON - 4
Trent - Soy - Lund (Rico - TAYLOR)
      Mane - Kdb - SON - PULISIC - ZAHA
      Vardy - Abraham (Connolly)

(ditching Heaton, Tark, Sterling, Mount, Saka)

Zaha apart you are moving to a very template team. How's your rank? Personally I would wait a week or two.

Fair point on template. I'm hovering around 200k and feel I need a freshen up.

Maybe a hit this week will do the trick - or just a Sterling > Son/Salah and reassess

going template will be my strategy over xmass. save 2-3 puns ofcourse.

but dont be afraid of template, if they're generating, THEY'RE GENERATING.

People will be so pissed over December and will force moves, or have inadequate benches, hence they'll drop.

Dont think of rises in December, just think of not dropping, because that's when people drop points most.

Just had a look at your team - bad luck with Tarko.
I'd probably change Sterling to Son or Pulisic and reassess. The following week we have 2 full programmes in one week. After that there might be some clarity.
