The dangers of taking hits to chase points in FPL

“It is by testing our ideas, subjecting them to failure, that we set the stage for growth.” – Matthew Syed, Black Box Thinking

Another Gameweek passes in the Fantasy Premier League, and it’s another hit for my team.

Greyhead’s constant nods to my transfer dealings in his ‘Great and the Good‘ series keeps reminding me of my aggressive approach to this season.

Using this article as a chance to reflect on my hits, it’s quite grim reading on first glance.

A -4 to bring in Dani Ceballos (£5.3m) in Gameweek 4 was a disaster. My second hit of the season involved me chasing the points of Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m) who was promptly benched and scored 1 point.

I managed to resist the urge for further hits until Gameweek 10, where I again took a hit to dump the underperforming Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) for KDB… who managed just a single assist.

In Gameweek 11, another hit, as Mason Mount (£6.8m) left my team for Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.7m), to fund a move for Jamie Vardy (£9.7m).

My most recent hit involved taking out Ricardo Pereira (£6.4m) and Hudson-Odoi for Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.0m) and James Maddison (£7.6m). It’s quite painful to see just how much the carousel has been spinning.

Hudson-Odoi has been one of a few ill-fated punts in my team this season

What’s interesting (well for me anyway!) is how I’ve been going about making the hits.

My latest was the third time I’ve made a so-called ‘sideways’ move.

To fund de Bruyne initially, I downgraded Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) for fellow Liverpool player Joel Matip (£5.3m). After selling him for an ill-fated fling with Mahrez, I lost Mount for teammate Hudson-Odoi.

To then upgrade Hudson-Odoi, I lost Pereira for Söyüncü.

To finally board the Vardy party, I even managed to swap Nicolas Otamendi (£5.2m), a non-playing defender, for Martin Kelly (£4.1m)… another non-playing defender.

On the whole, I think these were the right moves for my team, but in some ways, these hits felt like trading two players for one.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that all but my latest hit have got me big fat red arrows.

Looking back on these moves, it’s also made me realise that I’ve been putting too much money in defence this season.

Out of the three hits I’ve just mentioned, they all involved downgrading a defender. This is despite a normal strategy of mine being to avoid paying a premium price for defenders unless they are playing at Wing Back or have set pieces in their locker.

Alonso, when playing regularly, is a premium option I am willing to pay for

I’ve never been afraid of making a hit, and I recently watched the brilliant Meet the Manager video with Joe and Mark, where Mark talks about his own strategy.

His fear of being £0.1m or £0.2m off transfers further down the line fuels his aggression, making him more likely to take hits, and also make earlier transfers.

My most recent hit didn’t pay off this week but it’s already helped improve my team value.

Hudson-Odoi has dropped twice, while both Söyüncü and Maddison have gone up £0.2m each.

That’s a massive swing – and my team is in better shape for it.

Just because people are saying I’m taking too many hits doesn’t mean I’m likely to slow down any time soon…!

And in true Black Box style, my hits are often correcting my mistakes, such as bringing in Hudson-Odoi, who I do feel I was a little unlucky with, damn you Christian Pulisic!

Pulisic’s burst into the team has closed down Hudson-Odoi as an option

In fact, this season would probably be even worse for me if I hadn’t set about correcting mistakes in my own team.

Losing de Bruyne on the Wildcard for Mahrez was rash. It cost me four points to bring him back, but he delivered this week with a goal against Chelsea.

Not leaving an extra £0.1m in the bank for Vardy was idiotic, but my -4 to bring him in and ship Callum Wilson (£7.7m) a few weeks ago has more than paid for itself.

I have no doubt that the upgrade of Hudson-Odoi to Maddison will reap rewards soon too. He is my boy after all – despite his questionable taste in backpacks.

As people around me are getting itchy feet with players like Anthony Martial (£7.8m), Mount, and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) – I feel like I may finally be in a pretty strong position as we head into Christmas.

I’m banking the transfer this week, and then, barring a change in Arsenal manager or a monster haul, I’ll be looking at getting rid of Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and FINALLY bringing in the man they call Lord John Lundstram (£4.9m).

Yes, you read that right. I’m planning on losing last years golden boot winner to fund a move for a £4.0m defender… what a season this is.

So, while I do not have any hits planned in the near future, it seems inevitable that I will succumb to my cravings. When I do, let’s hope it comes from a position of strength, rather than to correct yet another mistake.

Mount prone to rotation or getting subbed off unlike Zaha, who is more nailed @ that price range given the period we are in

Lundy is not a 4m defender... that ship sailed before you took your first hit.

I do agree with the sentiment, though, because the aim of the game in the first half is staying with the pack and increasing team value. Around December and post January is where the stronger squads will make a break up the rankings.

You can take hits and improve your team in the long run.

You can take hits and see immediate results.

Taking hits is like any other form of transfer in that if you bring in and get rid of the right players then they are worthwhile. Four points is nothing in the big scheme of things as long as you get your transfers right. This isn't a given, even with the most meticulous planning, but it will be the 37 FTs you make in a season that will hold the balance of your fortunes, not the odd -4 or -8.

I see the term "chasing points" used too often as well. A player scoring points is the best possible indicator that they will continue to score points.

By all means if you're getting in someone like Jorginho if he scores a brace that is almost certainly points chasing, as is getting a player who is significantly outperforming his expected goals and/or has terrible fixtures on the horizon.

            BUT

Too often, "points chasing" as a negative term falls into the gamblers' fallacy category of error where we convince ourselves that someone has scored all the points he's going to get, as if having fulfilled some sort of quota and is done.

            Also, morning everyone!

Very true, I think your first point is often undervalued. One may say that e.g. taking a hit for a defender is not likely to pay off in a given GW. But then waiting with a transfer for a hit, that should pay off long term, has the cost of not being able to do another viable transfer next GW for free.

One of these things is not like the other ...

But anyway, I’m a bit torn on Kane. Spurs have looked good and Mourinho is usually good for points from his lone strikers (Drogba, Costa, Lukaku). But so far they’ve only faced West Ham and Olympiakos who aren’t exactly a tough test.

I’m sick of KdB and my template strikers are doing just dandy so I’ve just got Son and will monitor Kane.

So many good options this week. Of all of them, I'd say there's no point having Kane if you're not going to captain him in this sort of fixture

Have 2fts and want to shift Sterling.

              Sterling >> Son

              Sterling + Wickham >> Kane + Cantwell (5th mid)

The dangers of not taking a hit: I was on the verge of doing Diop -> Soyüncu for a hit but cs odds and score predictions swayed me to play conservatively. Result: 2 points worse off, and taking the hit this GW instead....

I have taken hits to the worth of 52 points. My -12 in GW9 hurt big time, will not go there again but since then I have taken three -4 hits to sort out my team which has resulted in climbing the ranks.

Now I have two spots to fix which will be with FT's after GW14.

Hopefully that will see me not having to take anymore hits and then just change up using FT's if need be as I have a settled team now and will have my bench sorted GW18 when my triple Pool blank.

Yep, my thinking exactly. Finally feel like my team is a bit more "settled" and that I don't need major surgery.
Little things like Ward's injury, and Kelly's spot in the team looking more secure helps. I probably do need to get rid of Saka for someone that at least plays a bit, but doesn't seem like a priority.

                    Good luck to ya!

                  Who’s getting Jesus?
Does the Brazilian increase Sterling’s attacking output? He is much more likely to turn his back to goal and have the wingers run beyond whereas Aguero always likes to play on the last defender’s shoulder. Sterling tends to score more points with Gabriel rather than Sergio playing up top.

Im not sure this is true. If you want to count the West Ham game then yes he has a great PPG with Jesus but removed that and its not even 6 PPG in the remaining 3 games.
The 2 seasons before this Sterling was great with Aguero up top.
City just dont look as threatening as they have past couple of seasons.

Kane, Vardy, Tammy, Rashford & Jimenez all better options than Jesus imo.

Come on mate, Sterling is unreliable this season. I doubt Jesus is going to improve that.

                        City have regressed.

"Sterling tends to score more points with Gabriel rather than Sergio playing up top."

This has been debunked. Forgot who did the analysis, but I remember reading it. Sterling scores more with Aguero because City are better with Aguero.

And no, I'm not interested in Jesus at all. Fixtures are bad, better alternatives too in Rashford and Firmino.

So not sure yet..Bou seem as pretty good fixture to get points and be ahead of Son's train.

Currently have the following set up - Tielemans + Mount + £2.4m
Is it worth making either of the following moves over the next few weeks
                  A) Maddison & Pulisic
                  B) Son & McGinn or Grealish

Djenepo is a bigger rotation risk, Redmond is Redmond, JWP has been turd other than set pieces, though some signs of improvement lately. Wouldn't go for any really, but if I had to pick it would be JWP.
