The dangers of taking hits to chase points in FPL

“It is by testing our ideas, subjecting them to failure, that we set the stage for growth.” – Matthew Syed, Black Box Thinking

Another Gameweek passes in the Fantasy Premier League, and it’s another hit for my team.

Greyhead’s constant nods to my transfer dealings in his ‘Great and the Good‘ series keeps reminding me of my aggressive approach to this season.

Using this article as a chance to reflect on my hits, it’s quite grim reading on first glance.

A -4 to bring in Dani Ceballos (£5.3m) in Gameweek 4 was a disaster. My second hit of the season involved me chasing the points of Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m) who was promptly benched and scored 1 point.

I managed to resist the urge for further hits until Gameweek 10, where I again took a hit to dump the underperforming Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) for KDB… who managed just a single assist.

In Gameweek 11, another hit, as Mason Mount (£6.8m) left my team for Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.7m), to fund a move for Jamie Vardy (£9.7m).

My most recent hit involved taking out Ricardo Pereira (£6.4m) and Hudson-Odoi for Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.0m) and James Maddison (£7.6m). It’s quite painful to see just how much the carousel has been spinning.

Hudson-Odoi has been one of a few ill-fated punts in my team this season

What’s interesting (well for me anyway!) is how I’ve been going about making the hits.

My latest was the third time I’ve made a so-called ‘sideways’ move.

To fund de Bruyne initially, I downgraded Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) for fellow Liverpool player Joel Matip (£5.3m). After selling him for an ill-fated fling with Mahrez, I lost Mount for teammate Hudson-Odoi.

To then upgrade Hudson-Odoi, I lost Pereira for Söyüncü.

To finally board the Vardy party, I even managed to swap Nicolas Otamendi (£5.2m), a non-playing defender, for Martin Kelly (£4.1m)… another non-playing defender.

On the whole, I think these were the right moves for my team, but in some ways, these hits felt like trading two players for one.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that all but my latest hit have got me big fat red arrows.

Looking back on these moves, it’s also made me realise that I’ve been putting too much money in defence this season.

Out of the three hits I’ve just mentioned, they all involved downgrading a defender. This is despite a normal strategy of mine being to avoid paying a premium price for defenders unless they are playing at Wing Back or have set pieces in their locker.

Alonso, when playing regularly, is a premium option I am willing to pay for

I’ve never been afraid of making a hit, and I recently watched the brilliant Meet the Manager video with Joe and Mark, where Mark talks about his own strategy.

His fear of being £0.1m or £0.2m off transfers further down the line fuels his aggression, making him more likely to take hits, and also make earlier transfers.

My most recent hit didn’t pay off this week but it’s already helped improve my team value.

Hudson-Odoi has dropped twice, while both Söyüncü and Maddison have gone up £0.2m each.

That’s a massive swing – and my team is in better shape for it.

Just because people are saying I’m taking too many hits doesn’t mean I’m likely to slow down any time soon…!

And in true Black Box style, my hits are often correcting my mistakes, such as bringing in Hudson-Odoi, who I do feel I was a little unlucky with, damn you Christian Pulisic!

Pulisic’s burst into the team has closed down Hudson-Odoi as an option

In fact, this season would probably be even worse for me if I hadn’t set about correcting mistakes in my own team.

Losing de Bruyne on the Wildcard for Mahrez was rash. It cost me four points to bring him back, but he delivered this week with a goal against Chelsea.

Not leaving an extra £0.1m in the bank for Vardy was idiotic, but my -4 to bring him in and ship Callum Wilson (£7.7m) a few weeks ago has more than paid for itself.

I have no doubt that the upgrade of Hudson-Odoi to Maddison will reap rewards soon too. He is my boy after all – despite his questionable taste in backpacks.

As people around me are getting itchy feet with players like Anthony Martial (£7.8m), Mount, and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) – I feel like I may finally be in a pretty strong position as we head into Christmas.

I’m banking the transfer this week, and then, barring a change in Arsenal manager or a monster haul, I’ll be looking at getting rid of Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and FINALLY bringing in the man they call Lord John Lundstram (£4.9m).

Yes, you read that right. I’m planning on losing last years golden boot winner to fund a move for a £4.0m defender… what a season this is.

So, while I do not have any hits planned in the near future, it seems inevitable that I will succumb to my cravings. When I do, let’s hope it comes from a position of strength, rather than to correct yet another mistake.

The team is doing great in last few GW but Auba and Ars keep disappointing. What to do?

    Pope Button

Thats the thing. Kept him for “the run” but Ras is sompoor that even the Norwich game is not good for them. Pukki has better chances then him in that game. Don’t know whats the point of keeping him when I can have double Lei or Che with that money.

Maybe C considering this weekend's games, but saving other FT might be best. Pulisic in explosive form, but can he keep it up? Madds will tick over all year. I do like Ings for next few, but doesn't bring in huge scores and has well known fitness issues.

Taking hits is really not easy part of this game. Its like a knife that you can use to cut bread or cut your finger. Making hits is really powerfull thing in FPL. It can get you up or correct your mistakes but also can get you down and make your team worse.

I know many managers who take hits every 2-3 GWs and also those who take 1-2 hits all season. For me both strategies are (usually) wrong. Well you can be so lucky using your FT that you wont need -4 but doubt its really possible in 38 GWs with blanks and double GWs included.

Its my 5th season and I used to make many hits so during last season I decided to stop and look back where those -4 moves took me. The answer was terrible cuz like I thought most of the time they didnt pay off. I decided to "sacrifice" rest of last season and make 0 hits (if I can field XI) and simply write down every hit I want to make. Like you can guess 0 hits was much better than those I planned to make. For example one of those hits would cost me about 15 points but than another hit would give me something like 5-6 points. All together hits would give me worse result at end of season.

This season I took 2 hits: first in GW3 where I did a mini WC to get KDB and it pay off stright away and second hit was to sell Zinchenko who lost his place. It didnt pay of (cost me -2) but was good long term for my team and my TV too.
After that I always managed to bank FT and next week was doing just 2 FT so about 3-4 times and now Im on WC and obv plan to bank FT next week too.

From the other hand I planned to make Salah > Mane last week for a hit and it would hive me 5pts (Rico 0p autosub) but Salah was in treaning and that confused me.

I look at -4 as a goal for my striker that I was so happy about last week or a CS of my defender last week or a week before that I was so scared that he will loose in last mins of game and than was cheering it...now do I want to give it away? Really? Need to think twice before I will do so.

Hits can be ok but only smart/obvious ones made for long term pick. Before you make a hit think do you want that player long term even if he will blank this GW and are you really sure you dont want a player you sellin.

Interesting way to look at a hit as a reverse goal for a striker or reverse clean sheet.

But, one way you can also look at it:

"If Jimenez score now - It's like im being offered Pulisic for Mount, or Mane for Salah - for as long as i want! Do I want that?

Sometimes the answer is yes. People are afraid of negatives, a hit will reverse a goal. but look at it the other way, a goal will give you a "free hit" then thats a bit nicer 🙂 people like "free" and hate "negative".

Just a matter of how you look at it, and using it with proper balance.

      1. StoichkovFPL

Thing is that all look like you said so look a reverse and ask yourselfe do you still wanna do it?
CS or goal in previus game is a fact, a hit for -4 is a fact but a posibility of player you get for a hit scoring is still a posibility, nothing more.
Problem is people dont think straight when they want/afraid of a player they donr have and they imagine he will score brace or hattrick but its just they wishfull thinking most of the time.

Hits are not always so easy to calculate whether it paid off right away. Getting on board early gives you team value swings and also can set you up better in future. If the position is a problem, it will need to be addressed eventually. Doing so quickly to gain team value at the expense of -4 could well be worth it because the following week, you don't have to take a hit to handle the next issue and you get 'ahead of the curve' so to speak.

However, I don't think you should EVER take more than a -8. There are just too many things that could go wrong, variables you can't calculate, and you should instead wildcard or just think ahead.

I held Aubameyang for instance the week after Vardy got his hat-trick even with a FT available. He scored 8 vs Vardy's 6. But I lost 0.2m in team value. Could those 2 points have been worth the 0.2m? Maybe. I did the transfer the following week anyway but it's interesting.

      1. StoichkovFPL
        • 8 Years

Agree. Thats why I wrote about long term picking etc.
Also agree about very important thing I forgot to add - a hit is also a FT next week that you can use for other things as you already have a player you wanted but again it works only long term. Those moves also build TV but shouldnt be done just for value imo.

So Vardy is good example that a hit for player in form who you want long term with good fix MAY be worth it even he blank next game after that hit.

But making a hit selling ok player for another just for one game "cuz player x has tasty fix and Im afraid not owning" is most common mistake.

    Pope -- heaton
Taa Lundy Tomori -- Rico Lascelles
Sterling Kdb Martial Mount -- Cantwell
    Tammy Vardy Rash

A: Sterling + Lascelles >> Mane + Taylor but got a feeling I won’t be happy with martial/rashford/Mount next gw

    B: Sterling + Mount + Rashford >> Mane + Pulisic + Jimenez (-4)

C: Sterling + Mount >> Son + Pulisic + 1.5m....like this move but no mane could hurt badly!

D: Sterling + Lascelles >> Son + Robbo...but that also means benching tomori which is a good and bad thing. Also means no mane

Well it would be a push imo to get a sub 3. I'm not saying it's impossible, just really tough. If you have never done that sort of distance, building up the stamina just to go that distance is a great deal of work. Then you need to get the pace once you get to the distance.

A sub 1:30:00 half is a great pace. I have never managed to get that fast. Well done to you.

      A. Half of B is shuffling deckchairs - if you were to do it I'd go Hayden over Cant and keep the change for a rainy day.

I have a similar conundrum with an almost identical team. It would be Kelly instead of Montoya for me. Didn't consider the Kane option to be honest, I like it though. Leaning towards A) at the moment, fancy Liverpool to get some CS out of the next 4 so like the idea of the TAA robbo double up. Happy to be persuaded otherwise though....

        Too early for Zaha.
For Martial vs KDB - something seems off at City, I'd keep Martial if you are dead set on doing something - extra cash could let you do something exciting in next few weeks.

You likely know you will move Auba after Norwich game regardless. Might as well save for one more week

1FT, 1.2M ITB. Who to go first? Diop to a CP defender?

    Pope
    TAA Soy Tomori
    Mane Sterling Tielemans Mount

    Button Lundstram Cantwell Diop

    Should I do Sterling > Mane for -4 ?

    Rest of the team

    Pope
    Rob Taa Lundstram Rico Soy
    Sterling Son Martial Maddison
    Vardy Abraham Jimenez

Really tempted as my I took a -4 hits in GW12 & GW13 and gained around 20 points.

    GW12 - Ota + Mount > Soy + Martial
    GW13 - Azpi + Haller > Jimenez + Robbo

Tight enough. Vardy because if anyone will score for Leicester Vardy most likely. Nice attacking miss but I wouldn't call them goalscorers. A few in Pool team could upset Mane, Firmino, Salah, TAA, Robertson etc.

      Mane hasn't scored against Brighton.
Vardy loves a party against Everton

Interesting article and very relevant because i'm considering a -4 hit this week.

I'm top of my mini league by around 25 points and i'm considering the following looking at form and fixtures for the next 4/5 gameweeks.

    a) Salah, Cantwell & Jimenez
    b) Pulisic, Son & Mouset

Stick with (a) or go with (b). I keep flip-flopping between the two.

      A is more stable.
      B is more explosive

      A give you 2 players
      B gives you 3

Always risk of rash challenge and yellow/red card but for attacking potential and baps probably worth risk

The Mother of all questions - please help

Even with the amazing front 3 in Tammy Vardy Jimmy, we might have amazing treasures and differentials.

We have 3 amazing budget strikers, who is the best? looking at the below i think we have 2 seasonal set and forgets, and 1 short term mega punt!

    () means hard fixture
Ive looked 17 GWs in advance (YES 17! we might have 3 special cases here)

    Ayew - Mousset - Ings

    Ayew
    5.1 - 48 pts - 951 mins - NAILED 100% 90 mins mostly - Bonus Point Magnet (11 Points)
    bur/BOU/wat/BHA/new/WHU/sou/nor/ARS --- (mci) --- SOU/SHU/eve/NEW/bha/WAT/bou
16 theoretically good games in the next 17 !!!!!!!!!!!!! (only mci away is the exception)

    Mousset
5.0 - 44 Pts - Injured???? (updates pls) - Never plays a full 90 - 415 minutes played only. (I think he has the highest value/minutes of all players!)
    wol/NEW/nor/AVL/bha/ --- (TOT/mci/liv) --- WHU/ars --- (mci) --- cry/BOU/BHA/avl/NOR/new
13/17 theoretically good games. not a bad shout!

    Ings
    6.0 - 58 pts - Injury prone - amazing short term fixtures - 821 minutes played - 10 BPS not bad!
    WAT/NOR/new/WHA/avl --- (che) --- CRY --- (TOT/lei) --- WOL/cry --- (liv) --- BUR/AVL/whu/NEW/nor

13/17 theoretically good fixtures! for Ings id definitely be interested in the short term though and not 17 GWs for such an injury prone player.

For Ayew, I'd suggest that he might lose his place in January if - as seems likely - they bring someone in. Some talk of one of the Chelseas spares coming in.

        Money isnt an issue.

Main question being, given there are 3 amazing forwards, is it worth it to drop one of them for any of these 3 as a differential and extra cash?

Or safer to stay on the 3 proven template strikers?

the 3 budget strikers have unreal fixtures ive never seen anything that green. 17 GWs here lol

My team value sitting at 104.8m, selling value 102.4.

Not sure when I will be using my next WC but at the moment not sure where I can improve my team. I am moving on Pope and Rico after GW14. Then my squad should see me through.

Guess form and injuries will play a big part from now through December.

GW18 is going to be interesting and will be playing my bench. Salah, Mane and TAA on the bench that GW is bloody crazy but I am sticking with these three players right till the end so no point shifting them for one GW and then having to take hits to bring them back.

Could use my free hit GW18 but then again, could be handy later on. Still have all my chips except for my WC.

    Really looking forward to GW14!
