The dangers of taking hits to chase points in FPL

“It is by testing our ideas, subjecting them to failure, that we set the stage for growth.” – Matthew Syed, Black Box Thinking

Another Gameweek passes in the Fantasy Premier League, and it’s another hit for my team.

Greyhead’s constant nods to my transfer dealings in his ‘Great and the Good‘ series keeps reminding me of my aggressive approach to this season.

Using this article as a chance to reflect on my hits, it’s quite grim reading on first glance.

A -4 to bring in Dani Ceballos (£5.3m) in Gameweek 4 was a disaster. My second hit of the season involved me chasing the points of Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m) who was promptly benched and scored 1 point.

I managed to resist the urge for further hits until Gameweek 10, where I again took a hit to dump the underperforming Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) for KDB… who managed just a single assist.

In Gameweek 11, another hit, as Mason Mount (£6.8m) left my team for Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.7m), to fund a move for Jamie Vardy (£9.7m).

My most recent hit involved taking out Ricardo Pereira (£6.4m) and Hudson-Odoi for Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.0m) and James Maddison (£7.6m). It’s quite painful to see just how much the carousel has been spinning.

Hudson-Odoi has been one of a few ill-fated punts in my team this season

What’s interesting (well for me anyway!) is how I’ve been going about making the hits.

My latest was the third time I’ve made a so-called ‘sideways’ move.

To fund de Bruyne initially, I downgraded Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) for fellow Liverpool player Joel Matip (£5.3m). After selling him for an ill-fated fling with Mahrez, I lost Mount for teammate Hudson-Odoi.

To then upgrade Hudson-Odoi, I lost Pereira for Söyüncü.

To finally board the Vardy party, I even managed to swap Nicolas Otamendi (£5.2m), a non-playing defender, for Martin Kelly (£4.1m)… another non-playing defender.

On the whole, I think these were the right moves for my team, but in some ways, these hits felt like trading two players for one.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that all but my latest hit have got me big fat red arrows.

Looking back on these moves, it’s also made me realise that I’ve been putting too much money in defence this season.

Out of the three hits I’ve just mentioned, they all involved downgrading a defender. This is despite a normal strategy of mine being to avoid paying a premium price for defenders unless they are playing at Wing Back or have set pieces in their locker.

Alonso, when playing regularly, is a premium option I am willing to pay for

I’ve never been afraid of making a hit, and I recently watched the brilliant Meet the Manager video with Joe and Mark, where Mark talks about his own strategy.

His fear of being £0.1m or £0.2m off transfers further down the line fuels his aggression, making him more likely to take hits, and also make earlier transfers.

My most recent hit didn’t pay off this week but it’s already helped improve my team value.

Hudson-Odoi has dropped twice, while both Söyüncü and Maddison have gone up £0.2m each.

That’s a massive swing – and my team is in better shape for it.

Just because people are saying I’m taking too many hits doesn’t mean I’m likely to slow down any time soon…!

And in true Black Box style, my hits are often correcting my mistakes, such as bringing in Hudson-Odoi, who I do feel I was a little unlucky with, damn you Christian Pulisic!

Pulisic’s burst into the team has closed down Hudson-Odoi as an option

In fact, this season would probably be even worse for me if I hadn’t set about correcting mistakes in my own team.

Losing de Bruyne on the Wildcard for Mahrez was rash. It cost me four points to bring him back, but he delivered this week with a goal against Chelsea.

Not leaving an extra £0.1m in the bank for Vardy was idiotic, but my -4 to bring him in and ship Callum Wilson (£7.7m) a few weeks ago has more than paid for itself.

I have no doubt that the upgrade of Hudson-Odoi to Maddison will reap rewards soon too. He is my boy after all – despite his questionable taste in backpacks.

As people around me are getting itchy feet with players like Anthony Martial (£7.8m), Mount, and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) – I feel like I may finally be in a pretty strong position as we head into Christmas.

I’m banking the transfer this week, and then, barring a change in Arsenal manager or a monster haul, I’ll be looking at getting rid of Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and FINALLY bringing in the man they call Lord John Lundstram (£4.9m).

Yes, you read that right. I’m planning on losing last years golden boot winner to fund a move for a £4.0m defender… what a season this is.

So, while I do not have any hits planned in the near future, it seems inevitable that I will succumb to my cravings. When I do, let’s hope it comes from a position of strength, rather than to correct yet another mistake.

Haven't been able to shift Ota for weeks. He's hanging around like a bad smell and dropped loads. He's going for Aurier I think.

What are the poor unfortunates that have stuck by Aubameyang doing with him? I had hoped for more than an assist against Soton so is it time to finally get rid even if ARS are facing NOR? Kane for a straight swap or Jimmy plus Son for -4 are my options.

Thinking of doing KDB > Son already this week. I would like to hear opinions and these are my reasons:

    - Son nothing less explosive then KDB
    - Correct me if I am wrong, but Son blanked as many times as KDB (in games they started)
    - Looking at City fixtures: until New Year only Arsenal away looks like a good fixture
    - Citizens are realy nothing special in last 5-6 games and it seems like they give up

I haven't looked closely enough to decide whether that would be a good move or not.

But the reasons you've given are really quite superficial and not particularly helpful. I'd try looking at some stats.

I would trust City to put a few past Newcastle this weekend. They have injuries to their key defenders and just lost to Villa.

If you look at the stats they are fairly similar, KDB will get more assists Son more goals, it's the move i'm making simply because i think Son has a higher ceiling in next few weeks. Not convinced City will thump Newcastle, they'll defend deep and take a 2-0 defeat whereas can see Spurs scoring a few against Bou home.

Way too little talk about Liverpool assets.
Leicester and Liverpool are the best teams with great fixtures and little rotation fear.

Likely because most already have them, and there has been plenty of discussion on Trent vs Rob and Salah vs Mane. Likewise most have 2/3 leicester already as well, between Vardy, Tielemans/Maddison, Soyuncu/Chilwell/Pereira.

Depends on the severity of Ward's injury. His route into the starting XI looks to be at right-back now, with Tomkins/Cahill settled at centre-half.

Very standard. It's a bit problematic though with that defense. You'll be playing TAA, Lundstram, Soyuncu every week for the next while (at least that's what I'm planning to do) so Aurier just ends up being annoyingly benched.

Would consider doing something like Aurier > Reid and looking to find some funds for Jimmy > Rashford.

I've taken a few hits this season as well:

GW13 - Maddison and Jiminez in for Sterling and Connolly (worked well)
GW11 - Vardy and Soyuncu in for Callum Wilson and Otamendi (worked well)
GW9 - Callum Wilson and Mount in for Pukki and James (mixed)
GW4 - James and Ashley Barnes in for Ndombele and Diogo Jota (mixed)
GW3 - Martial, Pukki and Ndombele in for Perez, King and Fraser (mixed as Martial and Ndombele got injured)

Overall, these transfers have moved my squad into a position I like, although I need to potentially start searching for differentials if my good scores start to produce small green arrows. At the moment, they're still giving me big ones. However, my team is very much "template", certainly compared to Twitter teams anyway, so as I get nearer to some of those teams in the higher rankings, I might need to bring in different players to help me climb that bit further.

Slow day in the office this morning so having a look at my team:

    Pope (Button)
    TAA Lundstram Soyuncu (Rico) (Janmaat)
    Guendouzi Maddison Sterling KDB Mané
    Abraham Vardy (Connolly)

    1FT 0ITB

Any obvious moves here? I'm keen on the likes of Son & Jiminez as they're in great form but I'd have to lose Sterling (against Newcastle) and take a hit or two for that. Leaning towards saving the transfer. Connolly's going down in price but I've missed the rises on Son & Jiminez... tough one.

Something I have been pondering and wanted to get some thoughts.

All this talk about captain choices this week and the foreseeable fixtures. Is there an argument to just auto captain Vardy/Mane (Salah if fit) for the next 4 weeks?

    Vardy - EVE, WAT, avl,NOR
Mane - BHA, EVE, bou, WAT

Assuming no suspensions, injuries in my head this strategy (something I have never done before) seems sensible, especially in Vardy's case. He may get the odd blank in the next 4 games but be a brave person to bet he doesn't return over the next 4 weeks. It also eliminates jumping between captains week in week out and potentially missing one haul while your captain blanks and vice versa.

Just thought I would open it up to discussion.

Sure, but I'm chosing Mane autocaptain for the run - he gets so many chances and I still feel Liverpool will score more over those 4 weeks

Welcome to my semi-permacap plan. It was on Salah and Sterling for a while, then I had to dump it. Vardy/Mane does look good, but I like the certainty of teams facing West Ham for now

Also, what you listed isn't a clear armband rotation. You'll still have to choose one of the two each week, so there's still room for jumping between captains and missing hauls

I was just showing two different choices to captain one permanently for the next 4 (so either Mane or Vardy for the next 4, no rotation). That way it eliminates your second point about jumping between captains and missing hauls.

Yeah, although I think that's what most of us have been/will be doing anyway as they've performing well for a while now. City's fixtures are tough as well...

I was heavily considering just leaving the captaincy on Vardy for the next few but I can't ignore Chelsea playing West Ham this weekend if Pellegrini is still around.

No there is good reason to include new information.
If I choose Vardy as my cap and he blanks and looks dire and Mane scores 3 with Salah on the field, I will go for Mane the week after. Just like you always include all information abour the past, as to come to Mane vs Vardy and not Auba vs Pukki in the first place

C Taylor instead of Tomori? Chelsea isn't really bothered about clean sheets this season... Just like Liverpool with Klopp's high line

Some context might be needed, as I guess Lowton wasn't a starter for you anyway. Taylor easily slots into that bench slot, probably as second sub

Definitely lundstram imo. He's a midfielder. Decent chance of an attacking return and possibility of a clean sheet. Chelsea still haven't convinced me with their defence

Rate my wildcard team: pretty template im guessing

        Henderson / 4.0
        Trent / Chilwell / Lundstram / Aurier / C.Taylor
        Mane / Son / Pulisic / Maddison / Hayden
        Vardy / Jimenez / Tammy

1.3 in the bank to upgrade Jimenez to Rashford in 3 weeks i think

When are we going to stop referring to Lundstram as “a £4.0m defender”?

If you’re bringing him in now, he’s a £5.0m defender now.
