Scoutcast Episode 309 – When FPL patience turns to stubbornness

When does patience stop being a virtue and become downright stubbornness?

This is among the issues tackled by Joe, Az and Lee on this week’s Scoutcast as they look at their own stubborn streaks and wonder whether impatience may actually be the wisest strategy this season.

Those who have been slow to catch on to Jamie Vardy’s sensational captaincy potential, and clinging to the hope that Raheem Sterling will eventually score in the league, will know about the cost of patience only too well.

There’s also plenty of input too from the community on this issue as they reveal how they may have been, perhaps, too set in their ways this campaign.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus’ credentials as a differential saviour is also on the bill, as are Spurs assets, who are already shaking up the template under Jose Mourinho. But which of the North Londoners’ wealth of attacking talent is the best to acquire?

Our trio also look back at their Gameweek 13 scores and detail their plans for the upcoming Gameweek 14 matches this weekend.

In this packed show, they also manage to squeeze in the regular features including clean sheets and Rough with the Smooth.

Finally, Az marks his return to the Scoutcast line-up to maintain his strong track record of picking differentials by taking his turn to select the next month’s best low-owned gem.

Will our trio continue to be stubborn this season, or will the patient approach prevail?

    guys
who will score more points in the coming weeks?

    A) son and mount
    B) maddison and pulisic

in option A: gameweek 15 i can downgrade TAA to any other defender and do mount -> maddison (-4)

      B

But in that case you have to include TAA in your calculations. Probably favourite to be highest scoring defender over next four.

Apart from that I'd opt for Mad and Pul, chiefly for security of starts. Definitely a close decision, though.

        Missed the negative four.

B by some distance as a choice, even though that is not your question.

Who are you lacking? Sterling to Mo/Mane and save the other seems more sensible.

If I had to pick one it would just be Alli for Sterling this week and reinvest next.

Chelsea's result tonight could affect rotation, whereas Alli gets next CL midweek off.

Salah + Otamendi to Son + TAA?

When considering captaincy, does anyone take into account the player's record against the team they are playing?

I often do it. If you constantly score against a team, you look forward to playing them again and it sticks with you. A physiological boost I guess. With an array of options this week, a quick search on a few players that interested me this week for what it's worth:-

Vardy has scored in 3 of his last 4 games against Everton. Never braced but I'm sure he'll be confident of adding to his record

Salah has also netted 3 times in his last 4 against Brighton.

Surprisingly, Mane has failed to score for Liverpool in this fixture.

Son has score 4 times in the last 4 against Bournemouth hitting a brace on 2 occasions.
    Kane just netting the once.

Sterling has 2 in the last 4 meetings with Newcastle.

When there are several strong candidates, then I use this to sway me. I must admit I personally think I'm going to go with Son whilst there is a buzz about Spurs.

"Son has score 4 times in the last 4 against Bournemouth hitting a brace on 2 occasions."

Not sure I saw a red card but yes... 2 blanks Jarvish. There's nothing concrete in my way of thinking. Usually I do it for a fun-exercise but usually find it interesting if I see a decent record

I never look at their track record against one team.

For me it's Eye test>form>fixture. The only player I can ever remember ever factoring this in was Haz against Bou.

I agree mate. A good few candidates fall into the 3 factors you mention this GW. I don't like overthinking it when there is more than one clear contender for the captaincy. It just helps me not overthink

In a word - No. I on't think a player's record against any one club is relevant unless (in italics) you can poinpoint the reason why. e.g. Vardy's pace against old, slow defenders such as Mustafi.

I do check this when considering multiple options after player and team/opposition form. Some players just have teams they like playing against like Rooney against Newcastle, Suarez against Norwich etc.

Nice to know I'm not on my own. Like I said, usually it's just to boost confidence I've already got in a player. Though every now and again there's a decent pattern to find. Cheers pal

Doesn't really help me this week though, there's too many options and I keep thinking about the Roberto factor, I almost wanna captain someone against him every week until he's dropped.

I disagree mate. From playing myself, there was always certain teams/players I looked forward to coming up against. Levels are different but I also remember hearing an interview with a player who was talking about a record against a certain team and how it helps. Ridiculously though I can't remember who it was. Pretty sure it was Kane against Leicester for what it's worth

Planning to do sterling > mane but need to raise 0.2m. Best options?

    Pope — Heaton
Taa Lundy Tomori — Rico lascelles
Mane Kdb Martial Mount — Cantwell
    Tammy Vardy Rashford

A: Mount + Rashford >> Pulisic + Jimmy(-4)....can then look to do martial > maddison in gw15 but no idea how to get Son
B: Martial + Rashford >> Son + Ings (-4)......not sure what to do thereafter with mount
C: Lascelles >> Kelly and take a hit next gw to remove two of Mount/martial/rashford
    D: Something else

Option C is the easy answer but feels a waste of a transfer so leaning towards A even though it involves removing Rashford

These are challenging times for FPL managers.

For me its this period, up to completion of GW 21 that defies my season. There is a late flurry around GW33 for the DGW's and choice of chips. But having a good foundation for 14, 15 and 16 and then again for 19, 20 and 21 is vital.

I'm looking for teams with good fixtures for the majority of this period.

I'm struggling to see obvious choices to pick candidates to maximise the close fixtures. Its trickier as FT's can be made 2 or three days apart so most of the team will look different between now and then.

I would love a pick and stick player for the entirety.

Anybody got one MUST HAVE player they wont touch based on this method?

I think it might be a Son/Moura. Cant see many other meeting my criteria.

I'm looking at Aurier, due to a collapse in funds elsewhere. I went for Aubameyang on a punt and I instantly regretted it, although the assist and (c) was 10 points I needed.

Are you a 'take a hit for Christmas' type of player?

I have CHO still, and now an injured King up top, with Mendy lurking on the rotation loop I need surgery to conform to my plans.

Lundstrum since Day 1 so thats cool.
        Tammy and Tomori for Chelsea.
I think Jiminez looks a great shout but Man City and Liverpool for 19 and 20 is risky.

Some of the most expensive players in the game right now. It isn't doable to have them all, hence the need to find better options.

Kane and Vardy - they have no similar backup option so surely nailed and in form, certainly the latter. I think this matters more than the fixtures which are fairly decent anyway.

Guita, PVA and Zaha from Crystal Palace offer set and forget options for this period. I'm not saying get all of them but one or two fitting in to your squad should last as long as their good fixtures last.

I am seriously considering Sterling>Salah(c), KDB>Son for a -4......subject to Salah looking healthy today. Is this madness?

    A) Bring in Son (KDB Out and no City players)
    B) Bring in Jimenez
    C) Do both for -4

    Mane KDB Maddison Mount (Dendoncker)
    Vardy Abraham Greenwood

    Thanks

Really unsure on what to do with my 2 FT here. Was originally doing Mount & Auba to Son & Rashord but was 0.4 short and not really keen on Utd still. Only have 0.2 ITB.

    Pope
    Lord Robbo Tomori
    Maddison Mane KDB Mount
    Aubameyang Abraham Vardy

    Button Soyuncu Kelly Dendocker

Missed the Jiminez price rise but could do Mount to Son and Auba to Jiminez?

Or Auba to Kane and save 1FT? Not sure on what else to consider?

Saw this on noted by someone else but think it's worth sharing again...

Lord Lund has more points than Salah and Sterling.

    Let's play patient or stubborn.

    If you don't have:
    1. Vardy
    2. Jimenez
    3. Son
    4. Pulisic
    5. Robertson

    If you still have:
    6. TAA
    7. Sterling
    8. KdB
    9. Mount
    10. Salah

      I have 1.

      I have 6,7,8,9

Why I’m looking at a -8 to get Pulisic in and Sterling, Mount, and TAA out.

Have Vardy and Robbo and stubbornly sticking with them. Increasingly impatient with Sterling and KdB, and increasingly attracted by TAA, Pulisic and Son.

Too nervous to go without any City attack, but currently too attached to Sterling/think he's due a haul with Jesus alongside him to sell. More taken with TAA than Salah given attacking threat, fixtures, set pieces, and mega-savings to spend elsewhere.

Sticking with vardy and robertson is not stubborn. Stubborn is if you are sticking with someone who is not scoring well.

Regarding KdB, we all saw when Laporte was injured along with Rodri that KdB was falling deeper to help the defence while Fernandinho slipped into CB. Now that Rodri and Gundogan are fit, and with Aguero injured, I feel KdB will do the opposite and push further forward to support the creativity in attack. Jesus cannot do what Aguero can outside the box in terms of supporting play, so KdB will probably find himself spending more time between the halfway-line and the final third than in previous games. I don't have the numbers to back this up or the precedence, but this is just my gut feeling.

City in general i'm not massively keen on atm but they have the capability of absolutely ripping a team apart!

I think if this happens KDB regardless of Aguero inj, Sterling not firing etc will be in the points.

That's the reason for me keeping.

Agree with Gundo and Rodri points you made though
