Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captains for Gameweek 14?

Leicester and Liverpool options go head-to-head for the captaincy this weekend.

They both face favourable home fixtures in Gameweek 14 as Everton and Brighton come to the King Power Stadium and Anfield respectively.

To help you make the tough decision we’ve got another edition of Captain Sensible.

As ever, we’ll go through the underlying statistics for each of the candidates and compare them against the defensive data of their upcoming opponents.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

For the third Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) is the most popular captain option.

Ahead of a home meeting with Everton, 29.9% of the voters have leant their backing to the Leicester City forward.

It’s not hard to understand why. Over the last five Gameweeks, Vardy has been remarkably reliable, scoring seven times during that period.

Furthermore, since Gameweek 4, he has registered just one blank at the King Power Stadium, registering 9.6 points per game there between then and now.

Meanwhile, Everton are without a clean sheet away from home since Gameweek 1 and are potentially about to lose manager Marco Silva to the sack.

Not far behind Vardy in the poll is Sadio Mané (£12.2m), who has a 24.8% share of the votes as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man and his colleagues will host a travel-sick Brighton side on Saturday afternoon, who have conceded an average of 2.3 goals per game in their last three away matches.

Meanwhile, Mané himself is on an encouraging run of form at Anfield. He has registered an attacking return there for the last four Premier League matches in a row and you have to go back to Gameweek 3 for the last time he blanked in Merseyside this season.

A long way off in third place is Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), backed by just 6.6% of the voters in the poll.

Arguably, the Manchester City man was unfortunate not to get his eighth league goal of the campaign against Chelsea after a controversial VAR call, and there are clearly some Fantasy managers left who believe he has more to deliver.

This week it’s a trip to Newcastle which is perhaps cause for patience. The Magpies have conceded at least twice in three of their last four matches although they have been much harder to beat at home.

In front of their own fans, only Leicester (three) have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle this season (four).

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) is currently fourth in the poll with a 6.1% share of the vote.

After 90 minutes midweek, there is certainly less concern about his ankle problems and, like Mané, he gets to face a defence that tends to be quite obliging away from home.

The Egyptian himself has scored in all but one of Liverpool’s home matches in the Premier League this season.

The 5.8% of managers who backed Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) in the captain poll will be hoping for good news from Frank Lampard in his Friday press conference after he sustained a knock to the hip in the Champions League.

If he does start against West Ham then he could have an enjoyable Saturday afternoon. The Hammers have been very poor defensively recently, conceding three goals in each of their last three matches.

As Fantasy managers continue to get positive vibes from Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Son Heung-min (£9.7m) are naturally attracting some support for the captaincy.

They have been backed by 4% and 3.9% respectively for the visit of Bournemouth to north London.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) who has more points than any other Chelsea player since Gameweek 10, has been garnered the support of 3.2% for that meeting with West Ham.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Benjamin Mendy (£5.8m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) are the only other options with more than a 1% share.

Everton with some of the best defensive stats away from home in the league. Will they play for Silva? Fancy a tight match and Leicester to concede

You aren’t looking at how that ranking system is weighted. He has 1 better finish than me. I have 3 better than his second best. It’s simple

Nope, not for the stats bit. The numbers are what they are. But for the eye test bit, and their interpretation in terms of Everton scoring. Lower scoring game, I can see that happening based off the stats. That’s probably the only thing holding some back from captaining Vardy.

I don’t know which stats you found which suggest that but numbers aside the morale and play doesn’t look too inspiring. Al the rumours about Silva leaving can’t have helped. Correct me Everton fans, but Silva doesn’t look like he’s being disliked by the fan base as much as just being rather incompetent for the job at hand.

One positive thing I will say about Irbox, is that at least he sticks with it on here through the tough times. Most FFS posters of his style bugger off and are never heard of again at the first sign of their rank starting to go south.

Once again misleading stats. Why use away games only. Considering the teams they have played away : Palace, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Burnley, Brighton and Southampton no wonder they're best. None of them are good attacking teams.

It doesn't work like that. Good defences are good both home and away, more so at home. They're playing Leicester this week. Would you only their past games against Leicester only? No.

Their stats are also good at home. The stats say they have been unlucky. I’m not saying they are good by any means this season, I just can’t see Leicester mauling them and there are better options than Vardy captain

I think City need a big win. Newcastle was really bad against Aston Villa but that being said they will probably now have learned how to defend but I think there is something in it for City and KdB but that's my opinion.

Keeping KdB for this game and monitor the Spurs is what I'm doing

According to my dream... The leicester Everton game is at 4pm today so I miss the deadline and Maddison, tiels and Vardy all haul in a 3-0 win

        Heaton
        Robertson | Mings | Tomori
        KDB | Mane | Maddison | Mount
        Abraham | Vardy | Jimenez

Button | Dendonocker | Rico | El Mohamadey

        1 FT 2.4m ITB

        I was thinking of either;

        Robertson - TAA
        Mount - Pulisic

Leaving my FT for this week.

Aye, he's been on my bench for a while. Haven't a clue what CPL is. But maybe El Mohamadey to Williems is a good option. I am looking at a WC in a few GW though, so maybe hold tight?

Amazing the toxicity prevalent here.. used to be a site full of wisdom and encouragement. No wonder the migration to Twitter from the mods and accomplished managers. I’ve provided at least 10+ hot topics over the years through statistical analysis and thought provoking insight but just can’t deal with the shite around these parts anymore

I think there's a lot of tension convergence. Lots of frustration in fpl with established players/methods not working out. Throw in the dark time of year, existential crisis, political division stoked up by a nasty media... Et voilà!

I’m sorry to say it mate but you need to take a look through your history and ask yourself why you are experiencing so much toxicity. You’re aggressively defensive if anyone disagrees with or questions you. Treat others better and you’ll get it back

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

WC headache. Had planned to wait until GW19 to play WC to set up team for Christmas season, but with Tammy probably out and Mount a doubt to play, there's a strong case for playing WC tonight for a Liverpool double-up and shift Mount for Pulisic. Hate a rushed WC though, really would like a whole week to tinker. Apart from Tammy and Mount, team is OK, but no FT left:

        Pope
        TAA Soyuncu Tomori Lundstram
        Mané Son Maddison Mount
        Vardy Jimenez
        (Button Lowton Guendozi Tammy)
        0 FT, £3.7

        Would you WC this lot?

Txs. I must say I don't share you faith about Mount - and I have Guendozi coming in for him.. And just thinking, if wanting a Liverpool triple, this is the GW to do it. E.g. Tammy -> Firmino could be a shrewd differential.
