Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captains for Gameweek 14?

Leicester and Liverpool options go head-to-head for the captaincy this weekend.

They both face favourable home fixtures in Gameweek 14 as Everton and Brighton come to the King Power Stadium and Anfield respectively.

To help you make the tough decision we’ve got another edition of Captain Sensible.

As ever, we’ll go through the underlying statistics for each of the candidates and compare them against the defensive data of their upcoming opponents.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

For the third Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) is the most popular captain option.

Ahead of a home meeting with Everton, 29.9% of the voters have leant their backing to the Leicester City forward.

It’s not hard to understand why. Over the last five Gameweeks, Vardy has been remarkably reliable, scoring seven times during that period.

Furthermore, since Gameweek 4, he has registered just one blank at the King Power Stadium, registering 9.6 points per game there between then and now.

Meanwhile, Everton are without a clean sheet away from home since Gameweek 1 and are potentially about to lose manager Marco Silva to the sack.

Not far behind Vardy in the poll is Sadio Mané (£12.2m), who has a 24.8% share of the votes as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man and his colleagues will host a travel-sick Brighton side on Saturday afternoon, who have conceded an average of 2.3 goals per game in their last three away matches.

Meanwhile, Mané himself is on an encouraging run of form at Anfield. He has registered an attacking return there for the last four Premier League matches in a row and you have to go back to Gameweek 3 for the last time he blanked in Merseyside this season.

A long way off in third place is Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), backed by just 6.6% of the voters in the poll.

Arguably, the Manchester City man was unfortunate not to get his eighth league goal of the campaign against Chelsea after a controversial VAR call, and there are clearly some Fantasy managers left who believe he has more to deliver.

This week it’s a trip to Newcastle which is perhaps cause for patience. The Magpies have conceded at least twice in three of their last four matches although they have been much harder to beat at home.

In front of their own fans, only Leicester (three) have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle this season (four).

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) is currently fourth in the poll with a 6.1% share of the vote.

After 90 minutes midweek, there is certainly less concern about his ankle problems and, like Mané, he gets to face a defence that tends to be quite obliging away from home.

The Egyptian himself has scored in all but one of Liverpool’s home matches in the Premier League this season.

The 5.8% of managers who backed Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) in the captain poll will be hoping for good news from Frank Lampard in his Friday press conference after he sustained a knock to the hip in the Champions League.

If he does start against West Ham then he could have an enjoyable Saturday afternoon. The Hammers have been very poor defensively recently, conceding three goals in each of their last three matches.

As Fantasy managers continue to get positive vibes from Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Son Heung-min (£9.7m) are naturally attracting some support for the captaincy.

They have been backed by 4% and 3.9% respectively for the visit of Bournemouth to north London.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) who has more points than any other Chelsea player since Gameweek 10, has been garnered the support of 3.2% for that meeting with West Ham.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Benjamin Mendy (£5.8m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) are the only other options with more than a 1% share.

Damn emery sacked. As a gooner I was really hoping he would be given time to make his dynasty at Arsenal, he should have been given ten years.
I understand we are no longer a big club these days and lucky if we can even scrape top 4 or europa league qualification.
Seriously envious of Spurs these days, brilliant stadium, world class manager, incredible team and Levy is a great business man - everything Arsenal isn’t

But was there any sign of progress? Some of the kids got to play from time to time, but still.
Wouldn't be envious of any team appointing post 2015 Mourinho.

Nobody who has followed the recent career of Jose mourinho should be envious. Some things are not important than trophies and one of those things is not having your club turned into a desolate toxic wasteland and football hell

Would love some feedback. Have been as high as 140K, about 300K currently. I won't be making a transfer (-4) unless it's revealed that Tammy is crocked for a fortnight, i.e. 3 games.

    Pope
    TAA, Robertson, Mendy
    Sterling (C), KdB, Tielemans, James
    Ings, Vardy, Tammy

Ryan, Traore, Lordstram (yes, yes I know, we play him for attacking returns, but not sure here... Wolves do not get European hangovers), Rico

The (C) is not at all fixed. It's just sitting there since last weekend. Vardy is the obvious choice. But Ings and even Sterling could be amazing. Raheem does do better away from home, at least on paper.

Good enough for this week. 2Fts next week could be useful to fix James and maybe Mendy. Sterling (c) a monstrous punt.

This is possible... But Newcastle have 5 goals at home, shipping 4 (so, maybe more defensively minded) and Citeh have 16 scored on the road in 6 matches. I shall see. Have 22 hours.

Guys really lost this GW, 2FTs.

    Pope
    Trent - Robbo - Soy
    Martial - Maddi - Mane - Kdb
    Jimmi - Vardy - Tammy*

    Button - Lund, Rico, Hayden

    A) Tammy to Ings if out for over a week (although Lund and Soy can cover all those weeks)
    B) Martial to Pulisic, could backfire royally as Puli might get benched
    C) Kdb to Son
    D) Something else
    E) Burn...

    Cheers!

You've a good first sub in case Tammy doesn't play. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need to use a transfer if you've two banked. I'm sure one of the pros has posted an article to that effect in the past.

My solution would be to set your bench as you need them to come on, because that XI is fine. They'll all start if fit. Tammy won't be risked if not starting.

I'm a bit lost. Has it been confirmed how long is Abraham out for?

    Ryan Pope
    TAA Soyuncu Lundstram Willems Rico
    Mane Sterling DeBruyne Maddison Cantwell
    Vardy Abraham Connolly

    A) Sterling & Willems > Son & Robbo (2 FT, exact cash)
    B) Sterling & Connolly > Son & Ings (or Mousset?)
    C) Sterling & Rico > Son & Aurier
    D) Sterling > Son (save the other FT)

It's already started. TAA benched in UCL this week

Should be Robbo next. Once within the next three GWs, and that should be all

Mane and Salah should be dropped once each as well. Salah less likely since he was rested for his injury in GW13

Just don't try to predict when. Klopp has promised it anyway... And my guess is each would only be dropped once since we need to keep the race going

Did anyone go for ings? I was about to last night, then decided to look for youtube clips of his recent goals.

In almost every instance his chances have come from a complete balls up in defence. Arsenal turned off for a quick free kick, lloris handed him the ball on the line, wolves defender missed the ball completely.

Surely he can't keep being given chances, even against the shoddy up-coming defences

Obviously hope Abraham's OK, which he seems to be, but if the injury rules him out for a week or two, anyone else think it could potentially be quite fun from an FPL point of view?

In as much as it might force people (me included) to move away from the template, open up a few options...

I sat on 2FTs last week so I'm getting twitchy and want to use mine, just waiting to hear how long Abraham will be out for. Can't decide how I'll make the changes though!

    1. Klaren

It's not fun for people like me who got him in at original price. I lose a lot of value if I sell him and if not, I need to keep a +7.0m player and a striker position for someone who isn't playing.

If red-flagged, most likely just a maximum -0.2M over 6 GWs

Right now it's 0.5m. There seems to be some price protection mechanism in place for players who were originally mispriced (Martial, KDB, etc) so unless he is injured for 2+ weeks, I don't think he'd fall more than 0.2. It could be worse but 0.3 price loss isn't great either.

When an injury occurs in the template, it shifts into a slightly altered version of the same template

Remember when KDB got injured? There were template moves to replace him if it was long-term

The template is based on form, fixtures and prices anyway, so it will always be a limited pool

I actually view it the other way around - I'm happy to sell Tammy at 7.5 (bought for 7.0) and then buy him back at 7.9 or 7.8

TV is vanity - being worried about losing some of that TV (not SV) is even worse
The nearer my SV is to my TV, the better it is when it comes to the next wildcard

Yeah, don't hold that long. But would still prefer to hold this week (if I had your team, funds etc), then go into next week with 2 free transfers. You can only really replace him for Ings this week without a hit and Lundstram/Soy could easily outscore Ings and then you would have 2 transfers next week.

With a bench of Mount, Lordstram, Cantwell, who have excellent fixtures between them I guess it's actually a bit of a result for me if Tammy does miss 2-3 GWs as I have very solid replacements and won't need to jiggle my team about using valuable free transfers to ship and re-sign Tammy.

    Sensible thinking or wishful thinking?

Sensible but doesn't mean it will work out. Some people with worse benches and no planning will pick the right replacement who absolutely smashes it. Obviously others will pick somebody who has consecutive blanks. I think it all depends on whether or not Abraham hits the ground running when he returns, punishing sellers before they have chance to bring him back. If he blanks first 1 or 2 when he's back, holders will regret keeping him for sure. Not decided what to do personally.

I think I'm going to put my trust in my bench and bank the FT's for picking up other players with form and fixture. It's precisely what I went with a stronger bench at this time of year for, so I think I should use it

Yeah definitely, use it. I'm only considering selling because I have 2m in the bank. Your bench is very strong to be fair. Just saying one of the potential replacements is bound to do well - it's just guessing which one it is.

Are Jesus or Lacazette worth bringing in for Tammy? Kane would take a hit. Don't want Rashford because I have Martial and I want rid of him after the Villa game.

I suspect Michy Batshuayi will start Saturday irregardless of Abraham’s recover progress. It’s an easy call for Lampard imho.

If Abraham was cleared, I'd guess Lampard would probably start him as he has already started Mount twice right after impact injuries mid-week but Abraham's injury seems a little bit more serious than that based on the initial comments and his recent instagram post.

Well I'm a bit salty now.
At the very beginning of the week I did a huge -8 involving selling Auba and Sterling for Vardy, Son, and KDB. Now Tammy's hurt and Auba looks just a bit more attractive with Emery gone. I don't have a WC either. I could free hit but I don't want to touch that until the blank GWs.

Whats the general consensus on Mount and who are the best replacements in the same price bracket?

      Pulisic, Tielemans, maybe Zaha.

Probably most are doing a straight swap for Pulisic. I think it's wild considering his fixture.
