The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice for FPL Gameweek 14

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Plenty to ponder for Fantasy Football Scout managers ahead of an enticing Gameweek 14, which offers up favourable fixtures for several big teams. The main breaking news today comes from West London, where Chelsea manager Frank Lampard gave us an update on the hip injury suffered by Tammy Abraham

We’ll know by the end of the weekend. He’s got some pain. He won’t be involved tomorrow. We’ll see by Monday.

– Frank Lampard

With Gameweek 15 following swiftly on the heels of Gameweek 14, many are pondering whether to keep or sell. Pro Pundit Holly began a discussion using the Rate My Team data from the member’s area. While Bemba_Da opened up the debate for all site users.

Rotation’s Alter Ego brought us a summary of the main points from the rest of this week’s press conferences, while Neale brought us the regular team news round-up and the usual line-up predictions. Pep Guardiola confirmed that 15.3%-owned Sergio Aguero will miss his side’s trip to the North East to take on Newcastle.

A timely article by Pro Pundit and former FPL winner Simon March looked at why opportunity trumps ability for goal-scoring FPL forwards. He pointed out that a change in the dugout at White Hart Lane could bring about an upturn in fortune for Harry Kane.

I examined Mourinho’s first two matches in charge with a discussion following on which Spurs players are set to benefit. An insightful comment was added by five-time top 1,000 manager and Meet the Manager guest Kenneth Tang, pointing out exactly why Pochettino had to go and why Mourinho is the perfect replacement.

Three Spurs players are included in this week’s Scout Picks.

Pro Pundit Ash (FPL Hints) highlighted a couple of striker options in Jesus and Danny Ings as his differential candidates. And he discussed how he is planning on investing money from the sale of Aguero and potentially considering an upgrade in midfield.

The Scoutcast trio this week of Joe, Lee, and Az debated the impact of Aguero’s absence as not only improving the prospects for Jesus but Raheem Sterling too. Joe shared a quote from Pep Guardiola made earlier in the season:

…for me striker will be an incredible position for [Sterling]. He can play in three positions up front.

– Pep Guardiola

While Lacazette wasn’t considered an option by the Scoutcast three on Tuesday night, the subsequent news of Emery’s sacking might mean there’s an opportunity for him now. Pro Pundit Andy canvassed opinion on the potential implications for Arsenal players.

Captaincy Debate & More Decisions

Offering not only advice on the best armband candidate but also food for thought on striker replacements, David’s members-only Captain Sensible is compulsory reading as ever.

For those who aren’t yet members, last week it was announced that monthly subscription options are available for £2.99 per month with an introductory offer of £1.99 for the first month for those signing up by December 2.

Jamie Vardy is emerging as a reliable captain pick following back-to-back 12-point hauls. As Neale pointed out in his analysis of the underlying stats, the Leicester forward’s five big chances against Brighton mean:

Vardy has had more of these gilt-edged opportunities in the last four Gameweeks (ten) than he had managed in the previous nine fixtures (seven).

– Neale Rigg

It seems the stats are starting to catch up with reality.

Brighton’s generous defending is also good news for those considering Mané or Salah for the armband. Indeed, in this week’s captaincy video, Joe highlighted that Brighton have conceded 17 big chances over their last four away matches

And Liverpool sit top of the latest DS stats, fixtures and clean sheet odds brought to us by G-Whizz.

While thinking of Anfield players, Pro Pundit Tom Freeman began a discussion on Liverpool’s upcoming fixture congestion, noting that their home game against Brighton tomorrow is the first of 10 in just 30 days. The underperforming Trent Alexander-Arnold was one name mentioned in the “when does patience become stubbornness?” discussion on the Scoutcast.

Greyhead dared to suggest in his the Great and the Good article that Mark and Ville’s refusal to buy Vardy could be on the stubborn end of the scale!

Az, in his capacity as a Pro Pundit, reflected on his decision making in his piece on the dangers of taking hits. While fellow Pro Pundit Lateriser, aimed to quantify the impact of FPL decisions. Andy then asked how do people react to both good and bad decisions?

It’s a subject that Pro Pundit and behavioural economics graduate, Simon March, has touched on in the past: the “What the heck? Effect” describes how we are more likely to take risks following a loss.

I see a lot of teams going without Sterling. Is that just restlessness and people thinking they could spend the money elsewhere? He surely remains a good investment?

He hasn't been a good investment so far, except for GW 1. But I'm keeping hoping he shines in Aguero's absence.

I’m not sure that Ings can physically play 3 games in a week so Abraham to Ings could backfire if Abraham is back mid week, although that is a big if. Personally I wouldn’t sell KDB for Son.
I know it’s boring but maybe punt on the 4.0 Utd defender in for Rico or get rid of one of your keepers to free up some cash and play Kelly.

I miss being able to view how many transfers other teams make, during the week; coupled with their squad value/in the bank numbers. Really makes FPL drag, as many of us could enjoy working out who had transferred whom. Tactics could be deployed on the back of this etc.

I too miss this feature as it was a game within a game for me predicting my rivals moves then eagerly awaiting the game to update to see if I was correct.
This being said there may be some merit to not seeing rivals moves and just focusing on your own team as I never crack 100k before Christmas but currently I am well within that.

Ha, one mans meat and all that. Because this feature has been taken away, it's taken some of my edge, and after finishing in the top 1500 last season (PB), i'm languishing cattle class at 1.2 million (sobs uncontrollably into morning tea).

But yes, you hit the nail on the head, indeed a game within a game.

Sounds like it's going well for you thought. Keep it up.

That's high, how many transfers have you done all season? I'm at 105 with circa 20. It feels to me. compared to seasons gone by, that the price movements are far less aggressive, and almost passive, which really benefits the casual. Years ago 110 TV could be achieved by Christmas, whereas now, it's got to be 40% off that number (and i'm not talking about playing the game for TV sakes).

13 transfers but I’ve made 2 for the sake of it in the past 3 gameweeks because I didn’t want to burn any.

Some great TVs aroubd. Player I'm against in the cup has 106.5.

Temptation is to hold onto players too long though if you have lots of value in them - I made that mistake last year

      1. Zladan
        • 6 Years

Absolutely this. I’ve so far managed to avoid holding on for too long and been quite aggressive. Sold Pukki when he was at his price peak.
I will be moving Mount on soon and won’t hesitate to remove Tammy now that Kane is an option once more.

I agree. Take Tammy, I know many on here have around 0.5 locked up in him. He's down 0.1 overnight, what do you do. For me, you need confirmation as to how long a player will be out and then use that information for your move. He's been great form, so happy to swallow 0.3 paper loss (it's not a loss if you don't realise it right) if he's back in a couple of weeks.

On the flip side, maybe Ings has some good fixtures, you could swap into him and if things go your way, your gonna make 0.2 on Ings at least over a couple of weeks, so net/net you'd buy back Tammy with no overall loss. Along these lines anyway.

Mousset and Ings are nice enablers who will rise in price. I’ll likely pick one of them up for Tammy.

you may well be right about that, but that also goes for someone like Jimenez with all his games played, City and Chelsea assets, even Liverpool assets could be benched as we saw last year in same fixture. I´m more worried about injury, i´ll take a sub appearance in midweek, 30 minutes vs Norwich i can see worse scenarios than that. When i have watched Southampton Ings looks back to his fitness levels from Burnley stint, and the other strikers has really struggled to impress.

        Soy for CS potential.

Famous last words but Wolves have scored every home game this year so Lund is unlikely to get CS points which he really needs for Baps

It's a toss up between a liklier clean sheet or a liklier attacking return. On balance, I think soy comes out on top given wolves almost certainly won't concede more than one and Leicester have kept four straight cleans

      Good morning everyone.

Regarding Tammy's injury how come people are saying it is a problem with his hip?

When i seen the incident in slow motion and seen how Tammy was clutching his lower rib cage/abdomen area i presumed the lad either had a bruised or cracked lower rib.

Maybe it is his hip so or maybe a bit of both maybe.

The defender got both legs under Tammy as he fell and he came right down on top of his shin guards.

Scan Monday should let us all know for sure anyway.

I think that´s because the hip is affected if the lower region of rib cage is hurt, there is bone fractures that connect them. And if you landing heavily on them it tends to stiffen when you rest, also affecting the upper part of the hip. I´m not a doctor though

That makes since to me as i have suffered a few falls like that in my time and that sounds familiar.
