The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice for FPL Gameweek 14

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Plenty to ponder for Fantasy Football Scout managers ahead of an enticing Gameweek 14, which offers up favourable fixtures for several big teams. The main breaking news today comes from West London, where Chelsea manager Frank Lampard gave us an update on the hip injury suffered by Tammy Abraham

We’ll know by the end of the weekend. He’s got some pain. He won’t be involved tomorrow. We’ll see by Monday.

– Frank Lampard

With Gameweek 15 following swiftly on the heels of Gameweek 14, many are pondering whether to keep or sell. Pro Pundit Holly began a discussion using the Rate My Team data from the member’s area. While Bemba_Da opened up the debate for all site users.

Rotation’s Alter Ego brought us a summary of the main points from the rest of this week’s press conferences, while Neale brought us the regular team news round-up and the usual line-up predictions. Pep Guardiola confirmed that 15.3%-owned Sergio Aguero will miss his side’s trip to the North East to take on Newcastle.

A timely article by Pro Pundit and former FPL winner Simon March looked at why opportunity trumps ability for goal-scoring FPL forwards. He pointed out that a change in the dugout at White Hart Lane could bring about an upturn in fortune for Harry Kane.

I examined Mourinho’s first two matches in charge with a discussion following on which Spurs players are set to benefit. An insightful comment was added by five-time top 1,000 manager and Meet the Manager guest Kenneth Tang, pointing out exactly why Pochettino had to go and why Mourinho is the perfect replacement.

Three Spurs players are included in this week’s Scout Picks.

Pro Pundit Ash (FPL Hints) highlighted a couple of striker options in Jesus and Danny Ings as his differential candidates. And he discussed how he is planning on investing money from the sale of Aguero and potentially considering an upgrade in midfield.

The Scoutcast trio this week of Joe, Lee, and Az debated the impact of Aguero’s absence as not only improving the prospects for Jesus but Raheem Sterling too. Joe shared a quote from Pep Guardiola made earlier in the season:

…for me striker will be an incredible position for [Sterling]. He can play in three positions up front.

– Pep Guardiola

While Lacazette wasn’t considered an option by the Scoutcast three on Tuesday night, the subsequent news of Emery’s sacking might mean there’s an opportunity for him now. Pro Pundit Andy canvassed opinion on the potential implications for Arsenal players.

Captaincy Debate & More Decisions

Offering not only advice on the best armband candidate but also food for thought on striker replacements, David’s members-only Captain Sensible is compulsory reading as ever.

For those who aren’t yet members, last week it was announced that monthly subscription options are available for £2.99 per month with an introductory offer of £1.99 for the first month for those signing up by December 2.

Jamie Vardy is emerging as a reliable captain pick following back-to-back 12-point hauls. As Neale pointed out in his analysis of the underlying stats, the Leicester forward’s five big chances against Brighton mean:

Vardy has had more of these gilt-edged opportunities in the last four Gameweeks (ten) than he had managed in the previous nine fixtures (seven).

– Neale Rigg

It seems the stats are starting to catch up with reality.

Brighton’s generous defending is also good news for those considering Mané or Salah for the armband. Indeed, in this week’s captaincy video, Joe highlighted that Brighton have conceded 17 big chances over their last four away matches

And Liverpool sit top of the latest DS stats, fixtures and clean sheet odds brought to us by G-Whizz.

While thinking of Anfield players, Pro Pundit Tom Freeman began a discussion on Liverpool’s upcoming fixture congestion, noting that their home game against Brighton tomorrow is the first of 10 in just 30 days. The underperforming Trent Alexander-Arnold was one name mentioned in the “when does patience become stubbornness?” discussion on the Scoutcast.

Greyhead dared to suggest in his the Great and the Good article that Mark and Ville’s refusal to buy Vardy could be on the stubborn end of the scale!

Az, in his capacity as a Pro Pundit, reflected on his decision making in his piece on the dangers of taking hits. While fellow Pro Pundit Lateriser, aimed to quantify the impact of FPL decisions. Andy then asked how do people react to both good and bad decisions?

It’s a subject that Pro Pundit and behavioural economics graduate, Simon March, has touched on in the past: the “What the heck? Effect” describes how we are more likely to take risks following a loss.

Anyone captaining Salah or is it too risky? Should I play safe with Vardy

Play it safe with Vardy - more positive variables: fitness, mid-week rest, pens (is Milner playing?) etc.

I've gone for Salah and have Vardy VC. Vardy is perfectly capable but I look for hat-trick potential and it feels like it could be Salah's week (does well at home).

    My team:
    Pope
    TAA Robbo Lund Soy
    Mane KDB Mount Maddison
    Vardy Jimenez

    Button Cantwell Montoya Tammy
    1FT

    1) Starting XI and bench order correct?
    2) Save 2FT and do Tammy & cantwell to Pulisic & Ayew/mouset

    Cheers

People tend to wait for double gameweeks. I used mine to great success on Salah against Huddersfield last season in a single gameweek. So, really there is no perfect time for it!

Serious question, after kdb price gate earlier, as well as martial, how is it that tammy could well drop 0.2 in 2 days?
After he has been red flagged as well, how does it work?!

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

      Repost:

      Two FPL market concepts clashing:

      - Price protection for red flags
      - The increased pace of price changes during fixture congestion

For Tammy, it seems the increased pace is overriding price protection (reduces the rate but doesn't actually lock the price). That's combined with the sheer number of sales due to the plethora of replacements and need to get those replacements quickly (unlike KDB and Martial)

Tammy might end up being the fastest dropping red-flagged player since GW1. Stars are aligned

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

For comparison, the price protection is working on Aguero

      2. jason_ni

I dont have the figures, but kdb was sold by a lot of ppl, in a short period, and it barely moved.
It has to have been some manual intervention in the background, which seems wrong.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

No, it's not manual. Think of every red-flagged player, both high and low profiles, and track how many times they changed

Fabianski, Alisson, KDB, Martial, Connolly... It's a long list, which now includes Aguero

I study the FPL market for fun and have tried to bring this up as a hot topic many times over the season 😀

            • 8 Years
            4 years, 4 months ago

What was the deal with kdb? Are you saying if 650k sell over a 7 day period, that can mean no drop vs 550 is 3 days = 2 drops?

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 5 Years
              4 years, 4 months ago

It's not the number of sales, but the percentage change in ownership that affects prices

In my original post, I said two concepts are clashing for Tammy: price protection and increased pace during fixture congestion

FPL prices are allowed to change faster during congested periods, so those who stay active are "rewarded" for making their moves. There's also the fact that many live teams would be making faster decisions... Let's just say a number of factors contribute to that factor itself

In the balance of things, a relatively high percentage of Tammy owners are selling within a short time, giving little time for the price protection to kick in, as the price protection reduces the rate of price changes for red flags but doesn't actually lock the price

Aguero, on the other hand, isn't experiencing sales as frantic as Tammy, even though they're both red-flagged, so the protection has been able to keep up a bit. He'll still drop faster than KDB due to the rapid turnover of GWs in this period, which is another FPL market concept

I'm just annoyed I've used my ft and couldn't shift him!
Hopefully William's starts vs villa and utd battle out a the nil nil draw!

I have Tammy and Williams as well 😀

Jimenez's rise has locked me out of a Williams => Kelly move, and also means I might have to go Tammy => Jimenez today before the dude even plays

KDB wasn’t sold by as many people, Tammy has been sold by almost a million ppl already.

Kdb was sold by 650k.. tammy was sold by 550k and got his first price drop.
Am aware that % ownership comes in, but dont think they would have been that different overall ownership

Are the people selling Tammy for Ings not worried he's back in a week and you're priced out due to how much he's risen since most got him in?

I have the bench to cover a GW or two and at this rate he might even become a differential of sorts.

Or am I missing something and he's definitely out for weeks?

Well there’s a midweek game next week, so he could miss two gameweeks in which Ings plays WAT + NOR. Pricing out not an issue if you have enough itb.

I just did it. Sterling and Cantwell to Pulisic and Son

Sick of Sterling, no doubt he’ll have a blinder this weekend and the others will blank.

Cantwell scored last match and now they have Arsenql at their home. One of worst defences around

So many stats supporting it that Mane (c) almost seems too obvious

Ings or Jimenez? Should I just play safe with Jimenez if I don't need the cash?
