Why the stats are becoming hard to ignore in the Pulisic v Mount debate

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy looks ahead to Gameweek 15 in his latest Pro Pundits piece

I don’t like making late changes to my team – at that point, it all feels a bit rushed. Despite this I still found myself on Saturday morning chopping and changing between Jamie Vardy (£9.9m) and Sadio Mané (£12.2m) for captaincy, only to pick the wrong one.

It turned out to be a fairly average week, scoring 51 and seeing a 4,321 red arrow, down to 510,594.

Looking ahead to Gameweek 15 and I’m in that weird situation where I could transfer out one of three players or just make no transfer at all.

Nick Pope (£4.7m) has a bit of a fixture swing from this Gameweek, and not in a good way. Looking at the Season Ticker in the Members Area right up until Gameweek 30 (which is when I’ll start looking at using the second Wildcard), Burnley are second bottom in terms of fixture difficulty for defence.

I’m still reluctant to use a transfer on a goalkeeper however. The ceiling for points is fairly low and at just £4.7m he’s scored 55 points total, only five points behind current leaders Mathew Ryan (£4.8m) and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.3m). With the fixtures getting more difficult I would hope for an increase in save points to combat the likelihood of less clean sheets as well.

Mason Mount (£6.6m) is another player I’m looking at giving the boot to. He has just one assist to his name in the last six Gameweeks. There is a part of me that wants to give him the Aston Villa game, but that would definitely be the last-chance saloon.

If you compare Mount to Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) over the last six Gameweeks, there really is no competition: Pulisic has created more chances, registered more big chances and recorded more shots inside the box over the same period.

Despite all of this, it’s John Lundstram (£5.0m) that I’m looking to bring in (yes that’s correct, I still don’t own him).

It will be Harry Maguire (£5.3m) leaving my team to accommodate Lundstram. I have thought about keeping him, given that he’s nailed and has good goal threat, and instead transfer out Issa Diop (£4.5m), but that leaves a lot of money spread out over my defence, and would mean I don’t have enough flexibility for future transfers.

It’s been difficult to ignore Lundstram, and that is made even worse by their upcoming fixture run that includes Newcastle United, Norwich, Aston Villa, Brighton and Watford. Couple that with his 45.5% ownership and it’s hard to go any longer without him given the potential for clean sheets and attacking returns: he’s 12th for expected goals (xG) from open play in the last six Gameweeks for example.

As much as the fixtures look good for my team this week, I want to be more aggressive with my transfers in an attempt to get ahead of the curve. Lundstram doesn’t do that but he does provide a comfort blanket. That being said, after writing this article and looking at the stats for Pulisic, it’s difficult to ignore him with Villa up next. Maybe I’ll take my fourth hit in as many Gameweeks and just get it over with…

As for captaincy, that’s easy. I can’t look past Vardy at the moment and even though I bought Mané in under the guise of handing him the armband between Gameweeks 14-17, I think it’ll be the Englishman who becomes permanent captain now, at least for the next three weeks.

Brought in Mousset just last gameweek and benched! Lost 9 points.

        Any reason for your decision?

u cant bench any of the other 7. that's why one of ur front 8 has to be a '2 point' man like hayden. so there is no confusion.

Does Roy Hodgson actually have a history of rotating goal keepers? Is Guaita going to play every game?

    1. Camzy

He does. Hennessey has started occasionally when Roy wants a keeper with more height.

Another reason why Guaita is such a bad pick. I really don't understand why people are getting him. He's a 5.0m Crystal Palace goalie. For just 0.3m more you get Schmeichel who's the keeper for the best defense in the league.

      1. The Ejiptian King
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 3 months ago

Really? I only remember Hennessey coming in when Guaita has had a knock which he does tend to get fairly often for a keeper iirc.

      2. Jullepuu

If that is the case I'm probably better of sticking with Pope. Do you agree that if Guaita plays the next 5 he will get around 5 to 10 more points than Pope?

      3. FC Hakkebøf

This Schmeichel definetely a better pick.

He was benched last season tactically because Roy wanted more height from his keeper. I know because I got burnt by it >.

Yeah, just read above, interesting, thanks. I think I'm going Hendo instead anyway because I'm incredibly cheap and he could be an advantage over everyone starting Lund.

lol. more height. what an argument. i googled it.
            guaita is 1.90m
            hennessey is 1.98m

these 8 centimeters will cause rotation?

i think guaita is a good option even at 5.0 & would have got him in but i prioritised mount to pulisic this week

People are overthinking this. If you have Lund get Guaita. If not then Hendo. 0.3m more for Guaita is not going to break the bank.

That was what Roy said last season. Baffled me too. And screwed me out of my keeper cover for a blank GW that I was banking on.

It was the only game week though. Any reason why Hennessey was the starter for the first 16 games?

so in which matches are taller gk required? when the opposition has players who have more accurate shooting so the taller keeper can stretch longer? what a funny comment.

I looked more into this. Last year Hennessey played the first 16 games. Then he got injured and Guaita took the spot. After that Guaita has started all but 1 game if he has been fit.

I'm not really sure what to make of this. What do you guys think?

      Team is very inefficient.

Ryan-Pope is wasted value, you don't have a fodder defender so it's a headache every week, and you have no mid-price mids which is where the best value is.

Jose Mourinho believes using Dele Alli in an advanced role is getting the best out of him as he is more “comfortable” operating near the striker.
Mourinho: 'For me Alli is not a midfield player. We want him associate with attacking players, thats his best position"
Think that decides me to.bring in Alli for Mount instead of Pulisic

How come the tweets on this site didnt mention a Guardiola or Lampard presser for today but we got updates on what they said (abt Pulisic, Aguero, etc) ?

    So their presser WAS today?

Guardiola was mentioned for today (13.30).

Lampard's comments were not from a press conference. They were from Chelsea TV.

I will wait for news about Tammy but beside that, would you do Martial to Pulisic for a hit?
First transfer was Sterling to Son.

    Festive period differentials!

At a time when a lot of squads are similar - are there any players you own or are considering that you think will shake things up a bit?

For me, Auba has finally come good. He sits in over 20% of squads, but seems relatively unowned in FFScout circles - so his brace was a welcome points boost that has helped me climb my way up a couple of mini leagues.

At just 5.1 million, and with great fixtures, Mousset looks a great pick right up until GW 19.

As mentioned on the Scoutcast, I think Alli is going to continue to excel at no.10, the fixtures are a bit of a mixed bag - but he does look like a great pick to go with your turkey sandwiches on Boxing Day, when Spurs play Brighton at home - followed by Southampton and Norwich.

I'm also definitely going to be making a move I should have made a long time ago - and switching McGinn for Grealish - who just looks sensational at the moment. McGinn is playing too deep for my liking, and Grealish is involved in everything good Villa do. With Southampton, Norwich, Watford and Burnley to come in GW 18-21, I'm hoping he stays under the 5% owned mark (currently in just 4.3% of squads)

... then it’s fine to wait for GW18 to bring in Grealish, right?

Will go for Zaha for now and prob make the switch for GW18, bitter and disappointed at how poor Zaha proved to be

I am debating bringing him in sooner - particularly if he scores this week.

Leicester at home and Sheffield United are two tricky games, but still fancy Villa to score at the moment, they are looking great going forward.

Such a confidence player and with 2 goals in 2 he should be flying high right now. Neat little price drop down to 6.6 too but equally annoyed he failed to deliver at the start of the season!

Too many value options this year = money in abundance ... for now!

Im personally thinking of Mount to Zaha (After CHE's AVL game), then Zaha to Grealish in GW18. Then using that cash to do Tammy to Rashford.

Rashford is also in free flowing form and has some great fixtures coming up after TOT and MCI.

Currently have differentials to most of Rashford, Auba, Schmeichel, Aurier (had for ages), Martial, Cantwell. Happy with this lot. Will get Grealish if he maintains form. Also Boldock one to watch.

I've had Doherty and Harvey Barnes on board past couple of weeks. Just need a return or 2 from Barnes and I'll be happy. Tempted to captain Auba this week (had all season) but we shall see, Vardy's form makes this a difficult one.

I brought in Grealish last night for Perez. Sick of him being ripped off around the hour mark though he did have a couple of decent chances. I too own Aubameyang but worryingly his brace came from 2 shots in the whole game (let's not talk about how lucky we got with the penalty opportunity. That aside I do think the next 2 fixtures look very good on paper.

I'm happy Salah's ownership has dropped over the weeks. I'm looking at him for captaincy for the next 3 weeks (EVE, bou, WAT) He's currently down to 6th in the midfielders behind KDB, Mane, Sterling, Mount and Maddison.

I own Son but can't get myself to bring in Alli just yet. Though if he scores again United then I'll have to reconsider.

I currently have triple Liverpool with TAA and Robbo and even though clean sheets aren't there, I'm happy to hold and bench them in GW18. I may well bring Sterling in for Salah that week too as the Leicester game will be huge especially if they get 6 points from United and Arsenal.

2 weeks ago I brought in Grealish, last week I brought in Mousset and JWP.

Am hoping for lots of rotation over the Xmas period (which normally doesn't happen as much as people expect) to make use of my strong bench, which for this gameweek is: Grealish, Rico, Abraham.

Don't talk to me about Auba...chose him over Vardy (when Jamie was 8.9) on WC and stuck by him until last week. Then he gets a brace. Where was this man all these weeks I owned him?!

I think Doherty comes back on the radar and also liked the look of Djenepo if he can stay fit/in the team.

Hey Az, good to see you post 🙂

I have Aubameyang too, and will keep for Brighton then reassess.

Richarlison and Martial have just become Alli and Zaha. Alli due to his form and prominent role and Zaha, who seems to be clicking just as Palace are about to go on an amazing fixture run.

Oh, and the plan is for Perez to become Grealish in GW18.
