Defensive issues mount for Palace despite latest clean sheet

Crystal Palace 1-0 Bournemouth

Goals: Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m)

Assists: James McArthur (£5.2m)

Red cards: Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m)

Bonus Points: Diego Rico x3 (£4.3m), Vicente Guaita x2 (£5.0m), Martin Kelly x1 (£4.1m)

Despite keeping a clean sheet against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace’s defensive potential for upcoming fixtures was subjected to two damaging blows on Tuesday night.

Roy Hodgson’s men went into Gameweek 14 with just four active defenders following recent injuries to Gary Cahill (£4.5m), Scott Dann (£4.3m) and Joel Ward (£4.5m).

However, after 29 minutes that total was reduced to two as Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) and Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) had both left the field of play.

Van Aanholt had to come off with a suspected hamstring problem

That may be of some concern to owners of Martin Kelly (£4.1m) in particular, the most popular Eagles’ defender right now, sitting in 24.5% of teams worldwide – although the budget man did secure a seven-point haul at Selhurst Park.

Against Bournemouth, Sakho was making his first start since returning from injury but was sent off after just 18 minutes for a reckless challenge on Adam Smith (£4.3m).

Sakho, who was reunited in the starting XI with James Tomkins (£5.0m) for the first time in nine months, may have won the ball initially but his trailing leg was far too high and caught the Cherries’ right-back on the knee.

That left Palace competing with 10 men for most of the encounter but it went from bad to worse when van Aanholt pulled up with suspected hamstring problems in the 29th minute.

Sakho was sent off early-on against Bournemouth

Sakho will serve a three-game suspension and if van Aanholt does have to recover from hamstring issue over such a busy period of fixtures, he could also be missing for a similar time.

“We have been concerned about the full-back situation since the start of the season. We don’t have out-and-out replacements, but Martin Kelly has done a fine job in the last two games. We didn’t realise Jeffrey Schlupp would be able to go in and be so strong. We have been strong in central defence, but we have lost a few now, and that is quite amazing. All of a sudden, we are asking Cheikhou Kouyaté to go back and do a wonderful job.” – Roy Hodgson

Thankfully for Crystal Palace, and those invested in their defence, Hodgson was able to rely on some workmanlike performances from two midfielders as they slotted into a make-shift back-four.

After the sending off, Cheikhou Kouyaté (£4.9m) dropped out of midfield and played the majority of the game at centre-back alongside Tomkins while versatile man Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) filled in at left-back once van Aanholt had been taken off.

Either way, Fantasy managers may be a little concerned by the fact that Tomkins and Kelly are the only two FPL defenders without red flags to their names ahead of a Gameweek 16 trip to Watford.

It will, therefore, be important for those invested in Kelly, in particular, to keep an eye on Hodgson’s next press conference ahead of a trip to Watford.

In his post-match media commitment on Tuesday night, the Palace manager sounded relatively positive about van Aanholt and suggested that he did not want to rule out Dann and Cahill of Gameweek 16 just yet, although admitted he would know a lot more after a Thursday training session.

“(Van Aanholt) definitely felt something. But he came off early, we have to hope we can get him back quickly. He wasn’t under the impression that the was finished for a number of weeks, but Thursday will tell me more.” – Roy Hodgson

“Dann’s ankle is still swollen so it was a bit early to tell, but I am not writing either of them off. I won’t know until Thursday.” – Roy Hodgson

Kouyaté and Kelly were two of Palace’s best players on Tuesday night

We should probably also point out that despite the mounting problems at the back, Palace were still able to secure a clean sheet, their fifth of the season (joint-second best in the league). That fact should probably instil confidence in their defensive assets over their long-term set of appealing fixtures.

“I was delighted with the performance. For ten men to stand their ground and maintain their discipline, and we were still trying to come out with the ball and ask questions of them. I am really proud of the team and they deserve an awful amount of credit.” – Roy Hodgson

While Palace did well to keep a clean sheet despite playing most of Gameweek 15 with 10 men, they were helped by Bournemouth’s continued offensive problems.

In truth, the Selhurst Park encounter was a dull one with neither side looking likely to win it until Schlupp’s energetic run into the box late-on, which resulted in the only goal of the game.

Wilson’s goal-drought continued against Crystal Palace

Bournemouth struggled to create clear cut chances all night long, even after Sakho was given his marching orders.

Their best opportunity of the evening fell to Callum Wilson (£7.6m) who did not act quickly enough at the back-post to put it away, Kelly making an important interception.

That means the centre-forward is now without a goal in eight consecutive Premier League matches.

“Very disappointing. The sending off was a good chance to give us an advantage to go and get some points. But we became a bit predictable and a bit stale. They defended well, but we didn’t do enough. Our innovative, attacking play wasn’t there today.” – Eddie Howe

“Yes, we have to be concerned with the sequence of results. I have to take responsibility and we have to put it right.” – Eddie Howe

Zaha did not show a great deal to encourage Fantasy owners or potential punters

That said, Crystal Palace were hardly a dominating attacking force. They were on the front-foot until Sakho’s dismissal but offered very little until the closing stages after he was sent off.

Schlupp’s 75th-minute goal was the Eagles’ first shot on target of the match after a determined run into the Bournemouth penalty box.

Crucially, it was something of a poor audition for Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) who had earned plenty of Fantasy attention ahead of Gameweek 15.

Crystal Palace’s appealing fixture run does continue for some time, with Watford (away), Brighton (home), Newcastle (away), West Ham (home), Southampton (away) and Norwich (away) their next six opponents.

However, Zaha himself has not particularly been showing too much form that suggest he can be a reliable source of points over that period.

His goal against Liverpool was the first he had scored at Selhurst Park all season and he had a characteristically quiet night on the goal threat front in the win over Bournemouth.

Despite showing some decent penalty area presence, Zaha still only registered one shot on goal all game, although that may have been influenced by the sending off to some extent.

Owners of the Ivory Coast international may be hoping for a better performance against Watford on Saturday.

Rico was the only Bournemouth asset to come out of Gameweek 15 with much to write home about

Finally, there were also injuries at the back for Bournemouth, which could encourage owners of Liverpool assets in Gameweek 16.

Steve Cook (£5.0m) missed the trip to Selhurst Park after a wrist impact against Spurs was revealed to be a fracture, although true to form, Eddie Howe chose not to reveal this in his pre-match press conference but waited until after the Gameweek 15 deadline had passed.

“Steve Cook’s injury was a bizarre one. He got hit on the wrist by a cross against Spurs and it turned into a fracture. We don’t know how long he will be out but it’s too painful to play tonight.” – Eddie Howe

“You do miss someone as experienced and vocal as Steve. You need others to come in and perform.” – Eddie Howe

Smith, recovering from an illness had to limp off in the closing stages at Palace and is now also a doubt for Gameweek 16.

Despite Bournemouth’s frustrating performance, there was still some success for Fantasy asset Diego Rico (£4.3m).

The left-back was substituted in the 64th minute and therefore banked a clean sheet that none of his defensive colleagues were able to share. Furthermore, he also tacked on three bonus points which nobody was able to dislodge in the final 26 minutes.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; van Aanholt (Schlupp 29′), Sakho, Tomkins, Kelly; McArthur, Milivojevic, Kouyaté; Zaha, Ayew, Townsend (McCarthy 46′).

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico (Francis 64′), Aké, Mepham, A Smith; Danjuma (Fraser 64′), Billing (L Cook 82′), Lerma, H Wilson; C Wilson, Solanke.

Anyone know what Pieters was on on FPLstats before he fell last night? Didn't expect his drop and missed the Pieters price drop. Now priced out of easy move to get Abraham back in. This game is unforgiving....

I'm against selling a Liverpool full-back now, due to those fixtures. The Alisson red card was an anomaly for the Brighton game. TAA and Robbo were cruising to 20+ points. It's just been a weird season

Also, the problem with selling one of them is... Who are you buying?

Kouyate plays at CB for his country. Every time. So he's no newbie to the position

Schlupp is a versatile placeholder in any position (like Young). I'm not even sure what his best position is

Kelly is already known as an effective replacement across the backline. Heck, he brings them clean sheets this season

Two injured defenders have a chance of returning this weekend, meaning an even higher chance next weekend. Palace also defends as a team, so I wouldn't be too bothered

Why are we all ignoring David Silva?

8th top points scorer IN THE GAME this season. I've stuck with the Sterling/KDB double-up but I think the Silva/KDB double-up has legs.

Sure, Silva is prone to the odd rotation and is usually subbed off early. But he does provide consistent returns.

What do we think? Can Silva be accommodated into a 5 man midfield alongside the likes of Mane, Pulisic, KDB and Alli/Son?

    1. MC Hammer

I feel he provides a way into the City attack without the weight of feeling like you have to captain him (e.g. Sterling and KDB who have, recently, shown that they're not the most reliable captain picks).

City's points are so spread out (evidenced by their games against Newcastle and Burnley) that someone like Silva could be a great pick just to consistently chip away with the odd goals and assists.

Could be done with Ings as cheap 3rd striker
Has merits and definite differential. It’s more a hedge your bets strategy but could pay off
City fixtures aren’t as good as some other teams but they generally find a way to score, you just don’t know which players will do it

I think Mousset could work even better as that 3rd striker if you're planning on a 5 man midfield (I currently have Ings but as part as a 3-4-3).

As long as you have adequate bench cover (e.g. Mousset and some of the low-priced, performing defenders) I think Silva is a good option in a 5 man midfield.

At this stage it's clear that TAA and Roberton should be treated as a 6th and 7th midfielder and players should adapt accordingly. We've long done this with Lordstram but for some reason we're focusing on his mid-labeling as a defender versus the full-back duo's very clear and evident advanced attacking roles... Anyone not running 0-8-3 has issues.

Seen a few people wondering whats happening with Abraham’s price. He was red flagged on the 29th meaning he needed more transfers to fall than usual (it used to be 2.5x, but I don’t play and keep up with the game as much as I used too so could be more).

He was changed on the 1st (Sunday) to yellow status IE the 25%, but once a player moves off a red flag they’re locked for either 7 or 9 days (again can’t quite remember now). So basically once he didn’t fall Saturday and his status changed on Sunday he was never going to fall regardless of how many ins or outs.

The game may well be intervening in prices but this looks like they’ve used their tools here to keep his price high.

This has happened for years, I remember when Fabregas at Arsenal got injured and everyone piled onto Arsharvin circa 2009/10. Fab had gone up loads (was when RVP was there too) was changing from red to yellow every few days, but he was out for about 3 weeks and hardly dropped due to the flags and locks.

For the record, Abraham's price was never officially locked. You'd have to go from red (for some specific reasons) to no flag to get locked. More details in the notes here: http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/ (bottom of the page)

Ah fair enough. I learnt about all this stuff when crack the code was the best and most reliable price prediction tool, many years ago.

Have never gone back to it.

Morning...am I correct in thinking the "five yellow card" amnesty is GW19 ,literally the half way point in the season? Have three players on 4YC and what with Scouse blank in GW18 feel like the sky is going to fall in..

As a United fan I don’t know how I feel about Martial injured. Rico 9pointer 1st sub but United really need him to play..

What to spend the 1.7 in the bank on?

    A) upgrade Janmaat to Willems/Dunk/Aurier

    B) Upgrade Cantwell to Perez?

    C) kdb to Alli? (Would leave even more cash...)

Know all this will lead to A benching problem, but need solid benc to deal with rotation.

    Henderson
    TAA, Soyuncu, Lundstram
    Mane, Kdb, Pulisic, Son
    Vardy, Abraham, Jimenez

    Subs: Button, Cantwell, Janmaat*, Rico

A lot contemplating dropping a fixture proof KDB for Alli or another Spurs asset i see. Let’s see how Spurs get on once the Mou honeymoon period ends. West Ham, Olympiakos and Bournemouth, albeit 3 good wins, aren’t good sides.

Get KDB back If Spurs start playing badly? It's not that difficult a decision ._.

Much like Abraham it depends what price you bought at
I sold Tammy cause I bought at 7.9 so nothing to lose
Kdb at 9.5 is a different story and would not want to buy back at 10.3

My plan was to do Jesus back to Abraham this GW, and then Jimenez to Kane in GW19, should i still stick that?

Pretty much all of my recent transfers not working out. Thoughts on next week lads? 1.7 itb

    Heaton (4)
    TAA - Soy - Lund - Tark - Rico
    Mane - KDB - Pulisic - Zaha - Saka
    Kane - Vardy - Connolly

    A. Saka > Grealish (3-5-2)
    B. Tark > Any defender up to 6.7. Considering Blades double up with Baldock
    C. Save and play Connolly vs WOL
    D. Something else

Ideas on the best move with 1.6m itb. Planning to WC in gw19/20

    Heaton -- Pope
Taa Lundy Tomori -- Rico Lascelles
Mane Kdb Pulisic Mount -- Cantwell
    Rashford Vardy Ings

    A: Mount + Lascelles >> Alli + Hanley (-4)
B: Mount + Lascelles >> Maddison + Aurier (-4)..this way i can bench Tomori (eve) this gw
    C: Mount + Rashford >> Alli + Tammy (-4)....if tammy scores
    D: Mount + Rashford >> Son + Pukki (-4)....if rashford blanks

I went with Henderson for this GW, but I also have Heaton and they rotate really well.
Even with a non playing GK on your bench I'd go Henderson personally, but that call is tighter since you have City (away) and Liverpool in 20 and 21

I would under no circumstances (barring injury/suspension) get Salah out ahead of playing Bournemouth. As a matter of fact, he'd be my captain if I had him.

      Personally I'd either:
      A) Lowton --> Kelly and hold the other
      B) KDB --> Son / Alli and hold the other
      C) Combine on of those with Mcginn --> Grealish

      good luck either way
