Defensive issues mount for Palace despite latest clean sheet

Crystal Palace 1-0 Bournemouth

Goals: Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m)

Assists: James McArthur (£5.2m)

Red cards: Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m)

Bonus Points: Diego Rico x3 (£4.3m), Vicente Guaita x2 (£5.0m), Martin Kelly x1 (£4.1m)

Despite keeping a clean sheet against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace’s defensive potential for upcoming fixtures was subjected to two damaging blows on Tuesday night.

Roy Hodgson’s men went into Gameweek 14 with just four active defenders following recent injuries to Gary Cahill (£4.5m), Scott Dann (£4.3m) and Joel Ward (£4.5m).

However, after 29 minutes that total was reduced to two as Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) and Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) had both left the field of play.

Van Aanholt had to come off with a suspected hamstring problem

That may be of some concern to owners of Martin Kelly (£4.1m) in particular, the most popular Eagles’ defender right now, sitting in 24.5% of teams worldwide – although the budget man did secure a seven-point haul at Selhurst Park.

Against Bournemouth, Sakho was making his first start since returning from injury but was sent off after just 18 minutes for a reckless challenge on Adam Smith (£4.3m).

Sakho, who was reunited in the starting XI with James Tomkins (£5.0m) for the first time in nine months, may have won the ball initially but his trailing leg was far too high and caught the Cherries’ right-back on the knee.

That left Palace competing with 10 men for most of the encounter but it went from bad to worse when van Aanholt pulled up with suspected hamstring problems in the 29th minute.

Sakho was sent off early-on against Bournemouth

Sakho will serve a three-game suspension and if van Aanholt does have to recover from hamstring issue over such a busy period of fixtures, he could also be missing for a similar time.

“We have been concerned about the full-back situation since the start of the season. We don’t have out-and-out replacements, but Martin Kelly has done a fine job in the last two games. We didn’t realise Jeffrey Schlupp would be able to go in and be so strong. We have been strong in central defence, but we have lost a few now, and that is quite amazing. All of a sudden, we are asking Cheikhou Kouyaté to go back and do a wonderful job.” – Roy Hodgson

Thankfully for Crystal Palace, and those invested in their defence, Hodgson was able to rely on some workmanlike performances from two midfielders as they slotted into a make-shift back-four.

After the sending off, Cheikhou Kouyaté (£4.9m) dropped out of midfield and played the majority of the game at centre-back alongside Tomkins while versatile man Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) filled in at left-back once van Aanholt had been taken off.

Either way, Fantasy managers may be a little concerned by the fact that Tomkins and Kelly are the only two FPL defenders without red flags to their names ahead of a Gameweek 16 trip to Watford.

It will, therefore, be important for those invested in Kelly, in particular, to keep an eye on Hodgson’s next press conference ahead of a trip to Watford.

In his post-match media commitment on Tuesday night, the Palace manager sounded relatively positive about van Aanholt and suggested that he did not want to rule out Dann and Cahill of Gameweek 16 just yet, although admitted he would know a lot more after a Thursday training session.

“(Van Aanholt) definitely felt something. But he came off early, we have to hope we can get him back quickly. He wasn’t under the impression that the was finished for a number of weeks, but Thursday will tell me more.” – Roy Hodgson

“Dann’s ankle is still swollen so it was a bit early to tell, but I am not writing either of them off. I won’t know until Thursday.” – Roy Hodgson

Kouyaté and Kelly were two of Palace’s best players on Tuesday night

We should probably also point out that despite the mounting problems at the back, Palace were still able to secure a clean sheet, their fifth of the season (joint-second best in the league). That fact should probably instil confidence in their defensive assets over their long-term set of appealing fixtures.

“I was delighted with the performance. For ten men to stand their ground and maintain their discipline, and we were still trying to come out with the ball and ask questions of them. I am really proud of the team and they deserve an awful amount of credit.” – Roy Hodgson

While Palace did well to keep a clean sheet despite playing most of Gameweek 15 with 10 men, they were helped by Bournemouth’s continued offensive problems.

In truth, the Selhurst Park encounter was a dull one with neither side looking likely to win it until Schlupp’s energetic run into the box late-on, which resulted in the only goal of the game.

Wilson’s goal-drought continued against Crystal Palace

Bournemouth struggled to create clear cut chances all night long, even after Sakho was given his marching orders.

Their best opportunity of the evening fell to Callum Wilson (£7.6m) who did not act quickly enough at the back-post to put it away, Kelly making an important interception.

That means the centre-forward is now without a goal in eight consecutive Premier League matches.

“Very disappointing. The sending off was a good chance to give us an advantage to go and get some points. But we became a bit predictable and a bit stale. They defended well, but we didn’t do enough. Our innovative, attacking play wasn’t there today.” – Eddie Howe

“Yes, we have to be concerned with the sequence of results. I have to take responsibility and we have to put it right.” – Eddie Howe

Zaha did not show a great deal to encourage Fantasy owners or potential punters

That said, Crystal Palace were hardly a dominating attacking force. They were on the front-foot until Sakho’s dismissal but offered very little until the closing stages after he was sent off.

Schlupp’s 75th-minute goal was the Eagles’ first shot on target of the match after a determined run into the Bournemouth penalty box.

Crucially, it was something of a poor audition for Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) who had earned plenty of Fantasy attention ahead of Gameweek 15.

Crystal Palace’s appealing fixture run does continue for some time, with Watford (away), Brighton (home), Newcastle (away), West Ham (home), Southampton (away) and Norwich (away) their next six opponents.

However, Zaha himself has not particularly been showing too much form that suggest he can be a reliable source of points over that period.

His goal against Liverpool was the first he had scored at Selhurst Park all season and he had a characteristically quiet night on the goal threat front in the win over Bournemouth.

Despite showing some decent penalty area presence, Zaha still only registered one shot on goal all game, although that may have been influenced by the sending off to some extent.

Owners of the Ivory Coast international may be hoping for a better performance against Watford on Saturday.

Rico was the only Bournemouth asset to come out of Gameweek 15 with much to write home about

Finally, there were also injuries at the back for Bournemouth, which could encourage owners of Liverpool assets in Gameweek 16.

Steve Cook (£5.0m) missed the trip to Selhurst Park after a wrist impact against Spurs was revealed to be a fracture, although true to form, Eddie Howe chose not to reveal this in his pre-match press conference but waited until after the Gameweek 15 deadline had passed.

“Steve Cook’s injury was a bizarre one. He got hit on the wrist by a cross against Spurs and it turned into a fracture. We don’t know how long he will be out but it’s too painful to play tonight.” – Eddie Howe

“You do miss someone as experienced and vocal as Steve. You need others to come in and perform.” – Eddie Howe

Smith, recovering from an illness had to limp off in the closing stages at Palace and is now also a doubt for Gameweek 16.

Despite Bournemouth’s frustrating performance, there was still some success for Fantasy asset Diego Rico (£4.3m).

The left-back was substituted in the 64th minute and therefore banked a clean sheet that none of his defensive colleagues were able to share. Furthermore, he also tacked on three bonus points which nobody was able to dislodge in the final 26 minutes.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; van Aanholt (Schlupp 29′), Sakho, Tomkins, Kelly; McArthur, Milivojevic, Kouyaté; Zaha, Ayew, Townsend (McCarthy 46′).

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico (Francis 64′), Aké, Mepham, A Smith; Danjuma (Fraser 64′), Billing (L Cook 82′), Lerma, H Wilson; C Wilson, Solanke.

      Dilva I like a lot

He’s been on my watch list a long time now. A quick look at the goals for column says City attack is a decent buy and he’s getting good minutes too.

Ignore Zaha but Grealish McGinn are both very decent options imo

Think he'd be best as right sided centre back in a 3/5.

England could let Trent play as a right-sided playmaker and AWB could cover his defensive duties very comfortably.

He's definitely a FB in the style of that vintage, although probably a bit early for that comparison.

While I have you, could you recommend a Palace defender to get in? Is Ward out long enough to get Kelly? Is Cahill a safe choice when he's fit?

                    Really tough to say

Don’t know who are the first choice at the back. Theoretically I’d go Sakho Tomkins but Cahill is a Roy favourite and those two are rarely fit simultaneously

Kelly is the one to have I guess if you don’t want Guaita but he’s likely to have a shortish shelf life and may miss the festive fixtures.

Didn't Roy say he was out longer term? Sure I read somewhere we wouldn't see him again this year, which would mean 5-6 GW's for Kelly.

Think he said a few weeks - so hard to say. Perhaps given Ward came back too soon from previous injury he’ll get a proper run.

Caveat emptor for any with weak benches. And despite my bullishness about Palace defence being based on systems not personnel it’s all very second choice right now

Can't really make my mind around it - straight swap KDB to Son would be the easiest move, however, i'm not sure about losing 100% on the other hand can switch to 352 losing Auba Hayden to Son Mousset, which will give me nice bench with Mousset but no Auba for WH game...

I really want Alli in. I can use 1ft and take him in for KDB, but his ever increasing ownership makes that a little daunting. Only other 2 mids i'd be willing to lose would be Pulisic and maybe Maddison but either would require a second transfer (also free).

    A) KDB -> Alli
    B) Maddison -> Alli
    C) Pulisic -> Alli

    and if not (A) then:

    1) Jiminez -> Ings
    2) Tammy -> Ings
    3) Downgrade One of Rob / TAA.

    Ryan / Button
    TAA / Robbo / Soyuncu / Lund / Rico
    Mane / KDB / Maddison / Pulisic / Cantwell
    Vardy / Tammy / Jimi

Thanks in advance, i'm normally quite decisive but I cant see any obvious option here :S

Definitely doing Mount to Alli with one of my FTs tonight.

Which move would you make with the 2nd FT or take a hit?

    A) Tielemans ➡️ Grealish
    B) Tomori ➡️ Aurier
    C) Tomori ➡️ Targett/Mings
    D) Tomori ➡️ Kelly
    E) Kane & Tielemans ➡️ Tammy & Son (-4)

    Reason behind selling Tomori is:
Want to cover Soyuncu's fixtures in GW16, 18 & 19 (avl, mci, LIV)
    And also Lundy's in GW20 & 21 (mci, liv)

B gets you an FPL backline of real world midfielders

Wouldn't lose Leicester or Spurs assets with those fixtures. Looks harder to defend if it goes wrong than Tomori to Aurier. I like the Villa boys and may get one for GW18, but they're far from Aurier's ceiling

Kelly is nice, but the problem is you want GW21 coverage. He could easily be out of the team again by then

Yup I agree Aurier covers those fixtures the best and is the most exciting option.

Tielemans to Grealish I can do in GW18 also no issues with that.

Still not sure about losing Kane as I think he could easily start outscoring Alli/Son and it wouldn't surprise me.

How did you fall into the Kane trap? We had such a similar team two weeks ago and now we've diverged quite a bit. Would just do the one honestly.

It can wait. Don't use a FT if it doesn't affect your starting XI. Only do that if you have 2FTs already and nothing else to do.

Got out from Sterling's trap to get into Kane's trap it was aided by the Tammy injury. I still think he could come good as I doubt Alli & Son will only be the ones getting points every game.

I like Aurier honestly he will start over Soy this week for me if I get him.

Think I’m leaving mine until after GW18 (No Liverpool) or GW19 (Liverpool away to Leicester) any thoughts on which teams to go for with decent fixtures?

Last year WC'ed as late as possible. Was OR about 2,000 at that point.
Used the WC to rip up whole team and start again with what looked good going forward.
      Ended up about 20,000.
Moral of the story: if it ain't broke, down try to fix it (just tidy up a bit)

Great advice from above. I took a bit of stick for posting up a WC team the last day that was only 4 players different from my current squad (and 2 of them were the goalkeepers). My thinking being: if my squad needed wholesale changes, that doesn't say a lot for my management skills for the last 14 weeks and the second thing was exactly what you mentioned: the Wildcard curse. Make wholesale changes and watch in horror the following week as you collect 40 points.

I had planned to swap Pieters to a 3.9 fodder and Ings back to Abraham. Had exact money but sadly missed Pieters price drop last night so now priced out. Only way to do that move now is if Abrahams falls again which is looking unlikely - damn FPL with their price fixing...

started season with him. Got rid.
had him back when he returned and got rid this GW after his last 2 performances.
a number 9 just not hitting the box - james has been putting balls in great areas for strikers.
a 7.5m mid playing centre forward should be a good option.

These are the moves I am planning over the next 2 (possibly 3) GWs. Which would you do for GW16?

      A) McGovern or Pope > Guaita / Henderson (to replace or rotate with Pope)
      B) Mount > Pulisic
      C) Maddison > KDB or Son
      D) Dendo > Grealish

I'm leaning towards doing A + B for -4 this week but unsure which of Guaita/ Henderson to get and whether to just dump Pope or rotate!
C and D can wait until closer to GW18 imo.

      1FT 6.7itb
      Pope, McGovern
      TAA, Lunds ,Soy, Willems, Rico
      Mané, Alli, Maddison, Mount, Dendo
      Vardy, Jimi, Ings

      Cheers 🙂

Totally agree but do it with the GK move and which option?!

Pope has NEW, bou, eve, MUN, AVL after Spurs.
Surely a couple of clean sheets in there?

Mount is the biggest priority there imo.

You’re right. Prob worth a hold on Pope.

Mount has been on chopping block for a while and Pulisic is likely to remain a better option.

Hope Mount gives a nice farewell present tonight

Not if you can bench him easily and then get rid of him 😉

It's a tough one. Are you considering bringing Abraham back?

I’m happy enough with Ings for now tbh or even longer term. Tammy is great (when fit) but the cheaper striker gives great flexibility

In that case go for Pulisic. I don't think that you should take a hit

        Mount out.
If doing the keeper move I'd go for a replacement rather than a rotation option, but not for a hit. Lev Yashin and Buffon combined would have struggled yesterday against City.

Where would you go from here?

Got 2FTs but 0ITB. Looking to ship Martial and possibly Pope, Tomori or Tammy. Can take a hit if needed. Thanks 🙂

      Pope
      TAA • Soyuncu • Lundy
      Son • KDB • Mané • Maddison • Martial
      Vardy. Tammy
      (McGov. Tomori. Greenwood. Rico)

Tammy should most likely start this weekend so I would keep him now.

I would consider Martial & Maddison to Alli & Grealish.

Yeah, seems a shame to drop Maddison, see how he does tonight. What about Tomori or Pope? And should I not be targeting Pulisic?

Got the same dilemma with Tielemans honestly so I'm monitoring him tonight.

No point selling Pope right now he has 3-4 good fixtures after Spurs. Once you get rid of Maddison I'd then sell Pope for Schmeichel after a few weeks.

I'm considering Tomori to Aurier if I don't sell Tielemans this week.

had a absolutely atrocious start to fpl, but have climbed from on OR of about 5 million from GW5 to a touch outside the 1 million mark. I expect to get inside the top million this week with a bit of luck. It's been fun gaining 4 million places in about 8 fpl gameweeks and seeing lots of green arrows!

If he can only play an hour and score 9 points he is surely undroppable.

      Kelly didn’t get any bonus.
      The order is:
      3 Rico
      2 Schlupp
      1 Guaita
