Vardy’s goal streak continues as FPL’s best defence banks another clean sheet

Leicester City 2-0 Watford

  • Goals: Jamie Vardy (£9.9m), James Maddison (£7.6m)
  • Assists: Jonny Evans (£5.1m), James Justin (£4.8m)
  • Bonus: Evans x3, Maddison x2, Ricardo Pereira (£6.4m)

They can’t all be 9-0s.

The bar was set ludicrously high by Brendan Rodgers’ side in Gameweek 8 and since then the Foxes have recorded more modest victories, scoring exactly two goals in each of their last five league matches.

With in excess of two million Fantasy Premier League managers and over 82% of the top 10k handing the armband to Jamie Vardy (£9.9m) ahead of Leicester City’s home match against managerless, bottom-of-the-table Watford, there were wildly optimistic predictions of another mauling and a deluge of FPL points.

What followed was a game strikingly similar to the Gameweek 14 victory over Everton just three days earlier.

In both cases, a struggling Premier League team had frustrated the Foxes until well into the second half and forced Rodgers to shuffle his pack.

With a busy December ahead, the Leicester boss had hinted at rotation in his pre-match press conference, highlighting the probable need to freshen his starting XI up in order to maintain his side’s “energy and intensity”.

Despite these comments, Rodgers’ only alteration to his starting XI was an enforced one: Christian Fuchs (£4.3m) replacing the injured Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) at left-back.

It was perhaps no surprise, then, that some of Leicester’s players looked leggy against the Hornets on Wednesday, with the exertions of their last-gasp victory over Everton just over 72 hours before this latest match taking its toll.

Youri Tielemans (£6.7m), an ever-present this season and a player who had lasted at least 80 minutes in all 14 previous league fixtures, appeared to be particularly jaded and was substituted midway through the second half.

Ayoze Perez (£6.2m) has been mostly ineffectual in the last two Gameweeks, meanwhile, and, having been hauled off for Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.7m) on Sunday, he failed to make it out after the interval against Watford last night.

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Rodgers makes a change or two against Aston Villa this weekend, then, with Tielemans and Perez among the leading candidates for a breather in the Midlands.

The Leicester boss said after the game:

We’ve played better this season. However, the mentality of the team and the ability to keep going… Hayden [Mullins] set the team up very well, Watford were very compact, very tight, deep, tried to frustrate. So that’s always difficult. But we had to keep our perseverance and keep going.

Harvey Barnes (£5.9m) looked anything but fatigued and, despite a fifth blank in a row, was one of the Foxes’ brighter players, especially in the first half.

A one-two with James Maddison (£7.6m) resulted in Barnes firing into the side netting before the left-winger danced his way through the Watford defence, only to be denied by Ben Foster (£4.8m) from close range.

The Watford goalkeeper was at it again after just after the break, thwarting Barnes from inside the six-yard box.

This was the young midfielder’s tenth start in a row for the Foxes; it was also the tenth successive game in which he has been substituted. Therein lies one of the downsides to Barnes, especially with Rodgers blessed with attack-minded options on the bench and threatening rotation over Christmas.

As was the case at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, it was a Vardy goal that set Leicester on their way to victory.

There is now almost a sense of inevitability that he will get on the scoresheet, regardless of how anonymous he looks.

Ever since Rodgers took over earlier this year, Vardy has wrestled FPL hauls from the jaws of a blank.

The late braces against Fulham and Arsenal, plus belated attacking returns against Huddersfield Town, are still fresh in the mind from the back-end of 2018/19.

Ten of his 14 goals this season have come in the second half and, although his latest strike came courtesy of a generous penalty award after a foul from Adam Masina (£4.3m) on Jonny Evans (£5.1m), he had arguably earned a lucky spot-kick decision, having been harshly penalised – and booked – for simulation in the Watford box earlier in the game.

The in-form premium striker, who remains FPL’s leading points-scorer, almost doubled his tally soon after, only to see his dinked effort hacked away from near the goal-line by a retreating Masina.

Maddison added gloss to the scoreline in injury time, bundling his way forward and firing past Foster to seal the win.

The England midfielder was himself not at his best last night but his owners would have felt they were due some luck after the penalty-taking farce of Gameweek 13 that deprived him of a goal against Brighton.

Normal service was resumed at the other end of the pitch, with Leicester keeping their seventh clean sheet of the season and their fifth in six Gameweeks.

Caglar Soyuncu (£5.1m) and co were seldom troubled, with Kasper Schmeichel (£5.3m) not making a save until injury time.

A Will Hughes (£5.5m) shot that struck Troy Deeney (£6.2m) was as close as the visitors came to breaking the deadlock before that.

Chilwell missed out on the shut-out points, with Rodgers saying of his injured left-back:

Hopefully, will be OK for the weekend. Slight problem with the top of his leg, the hip area. We’ll see how he goes over the next couple of days but hopefully OK.

Watford assets will be low down on many Fantasy managers’ watchlists, certainly until we find out who will succeed Quique Sanchez Flores at Vicarage Road.

Whoever steps into the managerial hotseat has a lot to tackle, with the Hornets seven points adrift at the foot of the Premier League and offering next-to-no attacking threat at the King Power despite their wholehearted performance.

Finding the back of the net has been a real problem in 2019/20 and Watford are the only top-flight team still in single figures for goals, with this latest defeat seeing them muster only four shots in total.

Mullins showed a bit more attacking ambition in deploying a 4-4-1-1, with Deeney in for the injured Jose Holebas (£4.7m), but there was little joy to be had against the Premier League’s meanest backline.

Owners of Crystal Palace and Liverpool defenders will be hoping that Watford remain shot-shy ahead of their encounters in Gameweeks 16 and 17 respectively.

Leicester City XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel; Ricardo, Evans, Soyuncu, Fuchs; Ndidi; Perez (Praet 46′), Tielemans (Choudhury 69′), Maddison, Barnes (Justin 80′), Vardy.

Watford XI (4-4-1-1): Foster; Femenia, Mariappa, Cathcart, Masina; Hughes (Quina 83′), Doucoure, Capoue, Sarr; Deulofeu (Success 77′); Deeney (Gray 87′).

I don't own Vardy, so was on Mane... but Lundstram looked a nice option, so switched. Regrets, I've had a few. But it was my decision. Got to own it.

Newcastle put everything into that City game. Clean sheet looks possible and Lunny is legit more dangerous in the attacking third than the current holder of the World Cup Golden Boot right now. Mad game we watch.

    Marcus Rashford.

Now the 5th highest points scorer in the game.

When do we start taking him seriously as an FPL asset?

3rd for Big Chances across the season.
2nd for Goal Attempts across the season.
2nd for xGI across the season.

Sure, he plays for a stuttering Utd side but they've still been able to score goals. He's nailed, on penalties, and is their talisman (if you buy into the talisman theory). Pogba's imminent return could also provide even more of an upside for him.

After this week, they play: EVE, wat, NEW, bur, ars, NOR, liv, BUR, WOL. Only the Liverpool fixture really looks tricky in that.

I currently have Ings/Abraham/Vardy, but am firmly eyeing up Rashford when Ings' fixtures worsen.

Owned by 18% of team. Suspect that it's a lot lower in the top 10k and across active teams, but happy to be proved wrong?

Kane, Vardy, Abraham, Jiminez and Greenwood all seem to feature more prominently in teams on here than Rashford. Might just be my observation though.

Rashford away at Watford is even a potential captain candidate in GW 18.

I think he will be coming in to my team as part of an Auba/mount --> Alli/Rash move. Watching the match last night he was at the end of everything good for utd. Originally I was gonna go for Ings instead but that convinced me - plus, he's a good differential in my mini leagues!

Whilst I joked about hitting the 100-Club this week and made this post, deep down I did think I potentially could do well. I'm sat on 23 points (19 given a hit I took) Ohhhhh if I didn't try to see the funny side I'd cry.

Seeing a no show for my captain Salah hurt my eyes. Jimmy was vice. To rub salt in the wounds, I was convinced I'd made Auba the vice but didn't think for a second Salah would be benched with no minutes.

A 700K rank drop as it stands with Auba, Lundstram and Guendouzi to come in.....

      Happy Thursday people

I'm my own worse enemy as I refused to bring Vardy in through pure stubbornness if anything as I know he's going to keep scoring. The logic isn't logical at all.
Though I ended sitting on a 1m plus OR last Christmas and ended up 50K so the motive is still there

Tbh that's a bit marginal to justify the WC - 3 out of 5 are upgrades.

I suppose it would be GW20. I'm not necessarily holding for anything specific, im sitting nicely in the top 100K at the moment, and top of my ML. I'm not desperate but i suppose i have 3 weeks to use it. Seems like a nice time to jump on the Alli bandwagon.

Alli is def looking great but I'm not sure he justifies the WC on his own.

The difficulty is it would mean KDB or Son out which are big risks!

It's a no for the WC for me but on whether Alli is worth the risk is prob one for your gut feel!

After playing my FT (Pope > Guaita), this is how I'm currently lining up for GW16. What do you think?

I am leaning towards making no further moves - nothing seems worth a hit.
        I am weighing up doing:
GW17: Mount or Maddison > KDB or Son
        GW18: Dendo > Grealish

        0FT 6.3itb :O
        Guaita
        TAA, Lunds, Willems
Mané (v), Alli (C), Maddison, Mount
        Vardy, Jimi, Ings
        (McGovern) (Soy, Dendo, Rico)

Agree with the plan or would you make any other moves this week?

        Cheers!

          Liverpool defence...

Even Jonny Evans has taken over Robertson, and is joint with TAA on points.

They're still right up there, but obviously come with a hefty price tag.

It's difficult to get rid before Bournemouth (a) and Watford (h) but with Fabinho expected to be out until 2020 and a 7 Gameweek run of:

Blank, Leicester (a), Wolves (h), Sheffield United (h), Spurs (a), Man United (h), Wolves (a)

Could it be time to do the unthinkable and get rid? It may be difficult for them to add to their measly 2 clean sheets.

Or are the attacking returns enough to keep you interested for the long haul?

TAA will get enough points to justify his price.

Liverpool have only fielded their first choice defence once in 15 games so I'm not surprised they're not keeping many clean sheets.

There's a clear drop off from Alisson to Adrian, Matip to Lovren, Fabinho to any other midfielder.

TAA is just so unbelieveably creative that I will be holding onto him all season long I think.

The current double up with VVD may go for that run of fixtures though, despite VVD's heroics last week! The money saved by downgrading VVD could enable me to get on an Alli or Son for Spurs nice run over the same period from GW18 onwards. It would also give me an extra player for the blank.

I was wrecking my head on how to get Alli. After hours of tinkering decided to do TAA & Pulisic => Aurier & Alli.

I think two home games for Aurier beats TAA points in those two GW's followed by a blank... + i finally have Alli.

            I feel good 🙂

Examining the TAA and Robbo double-up prior to my WC. Invested since day 1 of season. When a team gets accustomed to conceding (knowing they will score more), it becomes a habit. Whereas Leic have definitely gotten into the habit of keeping it tight as their results show.

TAA seems to buck the typical attacking defender mantra of 'clean sheets first, attacking points as a bonus.'
            .
I'm treating cleanies as a bonus. 10 pointer last week without one. He's basically a midfielder.

That's a fair point, and there's only 2 midfielders on more points priced £7.7m or under

On the flip side though there's plenty of cheap defenders not far behind, maybe not so many midfielders. Although it's still all so close!

There are, but you'd expect most of those to regress over the course of the season, whereas I expect TAA to still be top 3 by the end of it.

                Definition of set and forget.

I'm a TAA owner for the season, but transferred Robertson out last night - I would have needed to do this before GW18 anyway, but if Liverpool are incapable of keeping clean sheets, as seems to be the case, having the 2 most expensive defensive assets in the game is unsustainable, and there are lots of ways to invest the extra £3m from bringing in Kelly.

Plan is to keep for the next 2, then drop him for a cheapie and use the released funds to get in Son.

Having Son & Alli should cover any Christmas rotation with a resurgent Spurs.

I’m keeping double defence for next two then plan to do Ings to Rashford and downgrade Robbo to 5.5 or below.

Right now i don´t need the money so that is what makes me unsure, but it might be interesting come gw18, a downgrade could be 2-3m extra budget, that is massive.
Problem is that he goes up in price so would be even harder to get him back in and if you look closely at that fixture run i would say at least that double header between chrismtas and new year look good for cs and while the other is tough TAA could get some points even there.
If there opens up a very tempting move around that time things will look different, but my mind was set on keeping before you posted this.

Under normal circumstances I'd say yes, but I'm struggling to spend the money this season. There are so many value options throughout the pitch and the big hitters are hopeless. It would be pointless to bring in somebody like Jonny Evans for TAA in the hope he can keep up because I'm not sure I could improve my team with the savings.

I added Robbo to TAA two GWs ago and it failed miserably.

Cant stand the sight of that double up anymore. And I want Alli.

In order to get Alli Ive got several options:
            A. Mount and Zaha/Pulisic to Alli and cheap 5th mid.
            B. Robbo and Mount/Zaha/Pulisic to Kelly and Alli.
            C. Mount/Zaha/Pulisic and Jimenez to Alli and Mousset

And I think it’s B I like the most. Not sure which mid to get rid of though.

If I wanted an attacking right back who links well with a dynamic frontline and rarely will get a clean sheet, why would I pay £7.3m for TAA when Aurier is £4.9m?

I WC back in GW3 and went with an uber cheap backline of Lundstram, Rico, Kelly, Aurier and Reid. I was largely rinsed on here for doing it but I felt Liverpool’s defence looked weaker than last season, especially as Allison was injured. Shoving all funds into my front eight meant a rise from 2.5m to 250k. I’m not bringing in Liverpool defenders until the New Year and their first choice back four is playing regularly.

I've made my bed with TAA & Robbo & I intend to stubbornly lie in it until the end of the season so help me god (not literally)

Only Leicester have a better XGc than Liverpool, only Leicester have a better goals conceded than Liverpool... Yet in the entire league only one team has less clean sheets than them (guess who - no cheating!)

I'm in too deep to turn back now

A double is a no no but think one of robertson or TAA is ok with those fixtures.
I see him as an attacket who might get me a CS.
If money with an issue i would get rid but with Salah/Sterling & premium strikers not performing money is not an issue with my team

Amazon did great with their coverage.

I really hope we move towards a single subscription service that provides all football (especially for UK residents!) in one package for a fixed cost per month.

All games should be accessible for everyone at the same price. 🙂

I wish that would happen but it's so unlikely.

In Ireland they had something similar (being able to pick every game) but it was on normal TV last night which is nice for someone with pretty bad internet.

The coverage itself looked good on Amazon though, and competition is good to get some innovation.

🙁 It really sucks that *legally* we have to have Sky, BT + Amazon to watch football and still not get access to all games. It's why IPTV has become so popular.

                I completely agree, it's frustrating.

In Ireland we're kind of lucky because when you pay for BT you get Premier Sports and that has 3pm games (although you don't get to choose which one is on).

Last night it was Premier Sports that had 2 games on 2 channels and red button meant you could choose any other.

Not happening. They all want a piece of the pie and Prem League greed will make sure they get it at the cost of the punter

Yep, it's not going to happen while private companies exist + PL greed.

Blame the Government Competition Commission & OFCOM who see the ability for providers to bid on bundles leading to reduced prices for consumers. Forgetting that many PL fans want to have all matches so end up paying for multiple subscriptions.
