Jimenez points run ends as Wolves extend unbeaten streak with West Ham win

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 West Ham United

Leander Dendoncker celebrates his goal
  • Goals: Leander Dendoncker (£4.4m), Patrick Cutrone (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Joao Moutinho (£5.3m), Pedro Neto (£5.0m)
  • Bonus: Dendoncker x3, Moutinho x2, Conor Coady (£5.0m) x1

Leander Dendoncker (£4.4m) was the most-owned Wolves player to deliver a return at Molineux on Wednesday night as Raul Jimenez (£7.7m) failed to make it five consecutive Gameweeks with an attacking return.

The 22.5%-owned Mexican may have blanked against a leaky West Ham outfit but it was not for a lack of trying, with Jimenez topping the shot charts in the Gameweek 15 clash.

Dendoncker – still in 9.4% of squads despite being part of Wolves’ back three in the absence of Willy Boly (£4.8m) – poked home in the 24th minute directly from a Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) corner. The Portuguese midfield maestro has three assists and a goal in the past five Gameweeks.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s troops are now unbeaten in ten Premier League matches – perhaps not the most significant stat in Fantasy terms but it does illustrate Wolves’ excellent form following a ropey start to the season. On the other hand, Wednesday night’s shut-out was the club’s first since Gameweek 8.

Nuno, who gave his players Thursday off following their victory, was pleased with his side’s effort in defence. The Wolves boss said:

It was a good game, a good performance, I think we played very well. We had to be organised and manage the game.

West Ham are a very good team but we got a clean sheet and I’m very happy for that. I’m giving them a day off after 21 days without a day off.

However, Nuno did feel that his side might have made better use of counter-attacking situations, adding:

We had chances, clear breaks and counter-attacks that we should define better, clear chances.

Jimenez was probably the guiltiest party in that regard. The forward’s loose touch after a rapid Adama Traore (£5.2m) break saw the Mexico star shoot straight at David Martin (£4.0m) in the 73rd minute.

Jimenez sees an effort saved by Martin

West Ham’s current no. 1 made five saves against Wolves, putting him joint-third for that particular statistic among goalkeepers across Gameweek 18.

Martin kept the score at 1-0 in the first half with a good stop from Diogo Jota’s (£6.1m) drive, while he also prevented Jonny (£5.4m) scoring from close range on 54 minutes after the defender was put through by Jimenez.

West Ham’s only big chance of the game fell to Robert Snodgrass (£5.2m) after he was set free by Pablo Fornals (£6.0m). The Scot’s control let him down, however, as Rui Patricio (£5.2m) claimed the ball in a collision that ended the Hammers man’s involvement in the tie.

On his opportunity, Snodgrass explained:

For my chance I took a good first touch, the second I tried to go on my left and the keeper’s just come out and done well. I’m disappointed because it’s a chance I should have taken, and have done most of my career.

We’ll just go back to the drawing board and take the positives from the game because I thought there were some good performances and on another day I take that chance to make it 1-1, so I’m gutted.

Wolves ended the contest late on as Jimenez’s 84th-minute replacement Patrick Cutrone (£5.6m) slotted home a pass from fellow substitute Pedro Neto (£5.0m).

West Ham have now conceded 62 chances from set plays this season, fifth-bottom in the league. On that problem and his side’s performance, Manuel Pellegrini said:

I think that, for me, the big mistake we made was conceding from the set piece again. It was a very tight game in the first 45 minutes. We dominated most part of the second half.

We had one option [chance] to draw the game, but we didn’t take that option and finally they counter attacked and found the space for the second goal.

Before this game, we have conceded too many. Newcastle scored three from set pieces, Crystal Palace two, Bournemouth by set pieces, it’s at least eight or ten goals.

Questioned on why the impressive Michail Antonio (£6.9m) was not part of the matchday squad, Pellegrini stated:

It was a risk for him to play this game. He is not able to play and I hope he will be recovered for Monday.

The Irons boss added on Snodgrass:

I think [he will be fit for Gameweek 16]. We will see tomorrow, he had a big kick to his chin but hopefully he will be OK.

Snodgrass leaves the field after his clash with Patricio

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Saiss, Coady, Dendoncker; Jonny, Neves, Moutinho, Doherty; Jota (Neto 72′), Jimenez (Cutrone 84′), Traore (Bennett 89′).

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Martin; Cresswell, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Fredericks; Rice, Noble (Holland 71′); Fornals, F. Anderson, Snodgrass (Yarmolenko 62′); Haller (Ajeti 80′).

    EVE- potential new manager bounce
wat - potential new manager bounce
    NEW- improving quickly

Utd's form and confidence are fragile at the best of times. Think I'll just stick with Jimenez.

Could we see a few years of Lei always being top 4 and some other teams filling the top 6 spots. Tbf Ars, Utd and Spurs to an extent are a mess and I don’t see any of them getting much better anytime soon.

looking at your gw scores off the bat you have been pretty consistant and averaging ok, maybe on the low side a bit but not bad. Then you look at your hits which cost you 44 points and that has essentially cost you a low scoring GW.
      So yea less hits

Cheers man, i realise it’s whining and the whole poor old me stuff, but yeah, certainly less hits. Just used to playing aggressively, has worked for me in the past, but yeah change of tactics there is essential.

look at your gw history not your team to fix it, and it looks so much more clear.
When I bring players in its normally about form, but i will look at their fixtures and depending on them, be like ok he has 4 weeks to perform during those good fixtures and he stays until then.
If he does really well, like Rashford has done for me then I will give him a bit longer. But rarely I would take out a player I only had for 2 weeks unless he has been shocking, or reduced minutes etc.
Despite who is a good option that week, only try to move on players out ur team who are doing bad, find the best option that you can afford to replace them. People taking out good players to fund other moves are just asking for trouble

            • 12 Years
            4 years, 3 months ago

Yeah that all makes sense, give them a period to perform, and if not showing any good signs or reduced mins like you say, then move on. Need to be a tad more patient. Also have moved on the wrong players, for example Tielemans over Maddison, and not moving on Mane quick enough.
Just concerned if i can pull anything back from here.
Leader a 100 points ahead of me now, but then i’m only 60 points off third place. Meh, just a case if forgetting this week, LEARN from mistakes now, and push on i guess?

True, good sensical talk here. A lot depends on captaincy. Already thinking Alli this GW to make up ground? Knowing my luck Vardy will be the obvious choice and i’ll be left banging my head against a wall haha.

at this point dont pay attention to rank so much, focus on beating the average every week. See that as your goal, you realistically wont achieve great rank over night and will be depressing that way waiting. So have aim each week.

Lol pep talk over, gl 😀

Haha yeah true, it’s similar to me being a low handicap golfer, i play against the course, not rivals. So treat the average as the aim and should keep me more balanced each week.
We can never know what the average is though beforehand in order to beat it, but i get what ya mean hehe.

Based on your season history we're pretty similar (and both FFS "8"s). This is a weird year. The old tricks aren't working. Or at least, they're working but every other f**ker now gets on the same rank vectors as us before they can be profitable. I always knew the Vardy pardy from GW8 would be a slipstream to get in; did so, but then he bloody went and got a hattrick and 50% of players bought him. Getting on Spurs 2 weeks ago similar, but now everyone has them.
You're where I was a few weeks ago, I'm now respectable (but still, this time last year I was 2000, so this sucks). Our hope is the DGWs and blanks later in the season. With Mr Crellin's help, we'll make up some ground. But this game is getting way harder.

It sure is, and depending how passionate we are and how we are as people, it can make us feel dreadful when, dare i say it, casuals in my ML, are doing miles better. The Vardy hat trick timing was unfortunate as everyone jumped on him. Now double spurs is my differential but for how long? I’m guessing two weeks max.
True though, DGW’s, chips to use. Fair few rivals have already burnt some of theirs, so there’s that too 🙂

Double Spurs was a great decision. If it hasn't worked doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision. I really think the cognitive tricks you learn playing a fair amount of blackjack are helpful in FPL.

You will kill the casuals in the end. Still 2/3 to go.

Yeah i like the double spurs, not just because of their resurgence, well.....maybe Alli’s, but Son i like regardless, so with their form and doubling them i’m happy with.
I agree, and i hope so, still a massive long way to go, half a years worth if season to go yet haha.

      (1) held Salah too long
      (2) held Sterling too long
      (3) you are taking too many hits
      (4) you were late to the DeBruyne and Pukki party, that is a 50 advantage to the week-1 holders and you missed the Pukki -12 pt game when you owned him

But your team is always good, you just have faith in non producing, expensive players

      Hey bro,
From what i know coming from behind in FPL is most fun part i guess 😀
      Relax. It's easy as f...
Keep up with the template + take 1/2 bad template players out for some nice differentials.

Getting IN Vardy in GW 9/Jimenez in GW 10/Ings in GW 14 etc

You'll be fine IMO. Don't get affected by the wagons over here though. Many times our team suffers alongside OR.
Re hits, I have different view. If you're taking out dead assets for exciting ones, it's great to take hits IMO. Best feeling when they pay off.

Hey mate! Was hoping i’d see your reply haha, been a tough GW to swallow this one. Agreed and i do enjoy the comeback, just need to relax more and realise there’s time instead if impatiently trying to make up ground every week with hits.
That’s true, and i need to focus less on OR.
I agree, hits are good when they’re for taking out dead assets, but i have been going overboard with them.
Feel like i’ve shot myself in the foot removing KDB but i’m oddly comfortable at the same time going City’less for a bit.

You say bench headache. I say bounty of good players to choose from. We all get too stressed about bench points (I'm looking at Tammy's 12 on mine right now). But the good thing about Tammy's 12 on my bench is that I can have his next haul in my team for free next week. I'd rather have him there than think "f**k who do I transfer at -4 to get him". "Bench headaches" are only a problem in cognitive bias-land, not the real world. But yeah, it's also annoying to have Dendo as 3rd sub when he finally returns.

I personally would agonize over which defenders to play but I think you have the front 7 correct.
If transferring I'd rather have Alli than one of Zaha / Tiele but I wouldn't take a -4 for him, so depends on cash.

It is what i'm struggling with atm. Pretty set on front 7 apart from Mount over Ings. I feel like playing Kelly over Lund is a mistake so might change that. Would leave me with Mount, Soy and Kelly on the bench. Thoughts?

    (2) KDB

Salah is not giving points but he got his rest and will do well in the coming two games?

The usual suspects - Maddison, Zaha and the 2 above.
2 Pool defenders limit your moves.

What should I do with this team? Currently, have 2 FT

    Pope (Button)
    Soy TAA Tomori Lundstram (Mings)
KDB Mane Son (C) (Martial Hayden)
    Vardy Jimi Abraham

Thinking of doing either 2 out of these 3 transfers

    Pope -> Mccarthy
    Tomori -> Kelly
    Martial -> Grealish / Pulisic / JWP

may as well keep pope now the city game is out of the way, mccarthy isnt better

    Need some advice. Team is

    0 ft 2.4m itb
    Pope
    Taa Lundstram Aurier
    Mane KDB Pulisic Son
    Vardy Jimenez Ings

    Button Soyuncu Rico Donkey

Plan currently is to downgrade Son to Alli next gw in order to accommodate Rashford for Ings in GW 18.

          He's a enigma 😮
I've read a lot of news that he's forcefully avoiding to play though & will force a move out in January.
Can use the massive influx from his sell to bring IN a good CM & RW though so let's see what happens

Please, Pogba's a joke. There are plenty of decent and *hungry* mids around that would kill for a first team berth at a club like United. Think of those who have been signed by other clubs recently. Sissoko, Ndombele, Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Kante, Kovacic, Jorghino, Tielemans, Ndidi, Rodrigo, and that's just off the top of my head in the prem

United have got it so wrong on player recruitment for a while now

12 goal difference in xg between city (40) and liverpool (28). thats larger than the difference between liverpool and watford/norwich (17), who rank 18th. same applies to shots and other related metrics. insane how far ahead of the pack city are in terms of chance creation

Creation yes but not completion 🙂
Its not easy to get many of those shots on target when you have the majority of the opposition team blocking the goal

I was going to bring in Tammy for a hit but a bit reluctant to do so now with the Silva sacking. Then again, if you look at Arsenal it's not like they've gotten any better after sacking their manager
