Scoutcast Episode 311 – Rashford, whipping boys and the wealth of cheap defenders in FPL

There is a nostalgic theme to this week’s episode, with Joe joined by fellow seasoned Scoutcasters Andy and Az.

Meanwhile, Joe’s ‘nostalgia pick’ of Harry Kane also comes under deserved scrutiny, especially as other strikers, most notably Marcus Rashford, are looking far more appealing.

Our trio consider the merits of drafting in the Manchester United talisman, even before a derby clash this weekend in Gameweek 16. They also reveal their favoured front three going into the festive fixtures.

Formation comes under the spotlight in their lively discussion about how the wealth of cheap defenders this season have altered the thinking of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Whipping boys are also looked at as the Scoutcast crew consider the defenders to avoid, while Az also reveals the best teams for clean sheets over the next six Gameweeks.

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy takes his turn choosing a differential after recent successes for Az’s Alli selection two weeks ago and Sam’s James Ward-Prowse punt last time out.

Elsewhere, chess champion Magnus Carlsen (and number nine in the FPL world rankings) is the star of Gameweek 15’s ‘Rough with the Smooth’ round-up of your latest scores.

This retro-charged episode also reveals Joe, Andy and Az’s strategies for Gameweek 16, including their transfer and captaincy plans.

    Bournemouth v Liverpool

I expect a big response from Salah. One of the most selfish players in the premier league.
He will be fresh and should be raring to go after seeing how Origi and Shaq stepped up.
Dare I say it, I believe any Liverpool defensive double-ups will reap their patience this week.
Bournemouth wouldn’t have scored against the 10 men of Palace if the game was still going on now
    Bournemouth 0 – 4 Liverpool

One to watch – Mo Salah

    Spurs v Burnley

Whilst I expect Alli to keep his form, I believe Harry Kane will add to his 7 league goals this season.
He’s been a frustrating figure this season in FPL terms. His positioning etc. He has a good record against Burnley and I think Burnley will feel the wrath this weekend.
I expect a haul from Kane whilst Son and Alli will also prove to be good acquisitions this week
    Spurs 3 – 0 Burnley

One to watch – Harry Kane

    Watford v Crystal Palace

I can’t see Woy looking forward to this game. After their midweek efforts for 70 minutes with 10 men. A few too many defensive casualties thrown in there too, I believe Hayden Mullins will get all 3 points in his first game in charge at the Vicarage.
One man who I think will make this happen is Troy Deeney. The beast is back and I can’t see him settling for anything less than 100% and the win.
    Watford 2 – 1 Crystal Palace

One to watch – Troy Deeney

    Man City v Man Utd

The once eagerly anticipated derby of the season. 11 points separate the 2 teams in 3rd and 6th position respectively.
I think it’s going to be a tight affair. There is just something about how Utd approach the bigger games that make them all up for it.
Whilst Jesus looks like he’s up for being Man City’s main man up top, I just have a feeling that he could well be on the losing team.
Surely, Raheem Sterling has to step up and prevent this happening. The brilliance of KDB is too much for any opposition. Though with just 2 CS in their last 11 league games, I think United will fancy this.
    Man City 1 – 2 Man Utd

One to watch – Marcus Rashford

Sunday brings us 4 games which doesn’t scream Super Sunday…. But it’s football so I’m far from complaining!

    Aston Villa v Leicester City

Unpopular opinion… I believe Villa will take something from the game. Only a fool would predict that Leicester won’t score. They are brimming with confidence and I really hope they can keep this up (again).
Vardy should score, it’s what he does. 14 league goals in 15, scoring in his last 7 consecutive games including that hatty against the Saints.
Though that said, I am a huge admirer of Jack Grealish. He is a delight to watch and looks like the captaincy really took him to the next level. I think he will have a say in the end result.
    Aston Villa 2 – 2 Leicester City

One to watch – Jack Grealish

    Newcastle v Southampton

Well Newcastle surprised a few last night when scoring 2 past Sheff Utd, or should I say, Lundstram owners.
Shelvey and Saint Max are playing well. But don’t let this deter you from the fact that Sheff Utd dominated the game. 73% possession, 13 shots to 6, 8 corners to 1. Some could argue that the score could have been very different on the night. NUFC appeared gritty and may have found a bit more belief in the tank since the draw with City.
Dany Ings has scored in his last 4 games, already surpassed last season’s total of 7 goals and I think that run could continue.
    Newcastle 1 – 2 Southampton

One to watch – Danny Ings

    Norwich v Sheff Utd

Has Teemu Pukki started having a party and not invited anyone yet the swine? He’s returned in his last 3 but hurt many when he blanked 8 consecutive games.
Farke has said they are finally getting the ball to Pukki and playing to his strengths again. I think this will continue.
Yes it is a tricky tie against the Blades but I believe they could get something from this game.
Mousset will be back in the starting 11 and he may well get on the score sheet, but my gut says it won’t be enough.
    Norwich 2 – 1 Sheff Utd

One to watch – Teemu Pukki

    Brighton v Wolves

An excellent victory last night for Brighton albeit against a lacklustre Arsenal side.
This fixture should prove much more difficult against an in form Wolves side sitting 5th in the Premier League.
I can see Wolves scoring a couple of goals in this one. My bet would be Jimenez will almost certainly add to his 6 league goals this season.

    Brighton 0 – 2 Wolves

One to watch – Raul Jimenez

That just leaves Monday night. I wanted Freddie to do well. I had a feeling that he was going to get an instant success out of Pepe and remind him how wide forwards should really play.
Not quite happened just yet. Lacazette managed to get on the scoresheet against Brighton, and on another night, Aubameyang would have got on the end of a couple of great crosses from the left.
Though ifs and buts are all I can say about Arsenal’s last 2 performances.
What West Ham will we see Monday night? The team which frustrated Chelsea even though completely dominated it must be said… or the poor performance which saw Wolves win 2-0 the other night.
Martin made a couple of fantastic saves to keep the score down. It’s the perfect game for Arsenal to restore confidence in my opinion.
    West Ham 1 – 3 Arsenal

    Man to watch – Aubameyang

Worth noting that Kane hasn't scored in the league at home against Burnley for five years. Last goal was Dec 2014. Burnley play a tighter game away against Spurs and the games at the North London clubs home have been tight.

Kane's main threat has been away against them - proving effective on the counter arguably.

Dele Alli on the other hand has scored twice at home to Burnley since 2014.

The stats are there Joe and I did see that with the hatty coming at Turf Moor.
I just expect Spurs to start with more urgency to get the job done. I only own Son in my team. I just believe Kane will be the man at weekend. We shall see

Mate I apologise. I was only going to do a little piece on Liverpool at first and that's why I missed the early kick off.

        Everton v Chelsea

What will Big Duncan Ferguson bring to this team for the short term future?
Aggression, more fight, more pride. Just a few I'd expect.
But I don't think he will be able to restore their confidence for a tie against Chelsea. Tammy Abraham was quickly back with a bang and when confidence is that high, like Vardy, you'd expect it to.
Though this could be an extremely tight encounter and I think Chelsea will have a battle on their hands.
        Everton 1 v 1 Chelsea

Player to watch - Tammy Abraham

Interesting re Brighton - they are proving the set piece kings.... for good and bad.

Most of their recent goals for are from set pieces and scored by defenders.

Most of their recent goals conceded are from set pieces (eg see how VVD tore their defence apart).

Mountinho or Dendonker (c) anyone? 😉

Happy Jiminez owner...as long a Brighton score more than him 😉

If I had a spare place in defence I'd go for Dunk I reckon.

Worth noting that Mooy has become the surprise star for the team.

Maybe mate. If City didn't get the 3 points they desperately need, they could be up against a 14 points gap come Saturday evening. The pressure is on them no doubts. We knew they'd miss the presence of Kompany, but Laporte's absence has wreaked havoc

If he hauled, would you still get shut before wol, CHE, BHA, nor, sou over the festive season? I think he, like most thrives on confidence. He knows he's going to score for England... especially with the opposition they've faced. An early goal in that game for Spurs would decide the game. Though as Joe said, if it's tight, the longer the game goes, then who knows

        1. SHOOTER MCGINN

Initially, no. I thought Kane would be perfect for the Xmas period, but now it's more the fact that Rashford and Abraham are so good that even if Kane does well this week, there are cheaper and more reliable options, even if Kane scores a few goals over Christmas.

Really like this, ta Pep Pig.

Only bit I'm unsure of is ManCity ManUtd:
I can see ManC believing their reputation is somewhat at stake here, given the gap behind Lfc and Manu's recent climb up the table. They'll want to show the noisy neighbors are just that.
Rashford looks fantastic, but how much will he actually see of the ball.

I've got a very similar team and also the same Tielemans and Kane problem. I benched Mount for Cantwell last week so scared of benching Tielemans for him this week in case the same thing happens again.

I'd be tempted by the Aurier switch and playing ahead of Lund.

Thankfully I started Mount over Cantwell last week.
Norwich play better home and Tielemans was exhausted midweek he could be benched. Really fancy Cantwell for this week.

Yup I'm leaning towards getting Aurier. Low risk High reward punt.

zaha, people seem to be forgetting that grealish is um, grealish. Dont go doqwn that road, his popularity baffles me. Get Zaha and keep until Norwich. Sure there might be some blanks but its ez call imo

        Why does it baffle you?

Since Grealish moved further forward in GW7, he's returned 3 goals and 2 assists in 7 games vs Chelsea, Man Utd, Newcastle, Man City, Brighton, Norwich and Burnley.

        ... and he's only 6.0.

typical bad fpl player, gets points when no one has him. Drys up when he gets popular. Maybe could say the same about Zaha but he is proven

Just my opionon i guess and maybe im wrong, but dont see him outscoring zaha over that xmas period.

I'm not sure I get the bad FPL player bit, he's been in the Championship last three seasons, and nobody around his price point has outperformed him this season.

Looking at the last three, so since Mourinho arrived, Alli is the one to own.

I know Son has been creating more, but Alli's Goal Threat, xG, Involvement etc is all superior.

Do the same with Son. His xG has dropped under Jose but his xA goes up. Think the stats point to Alli being the better option under Mourinho.

check the touches in the final third or the penalty area over the last 2 games or since Poch left - you may be surprised.

Son is offering goals ‘and’ assists, Alli is more of a goal machine, agreed on that.

That said, with hindsight I wish I had bought Alli, but I wouldn’t be using a precious transfer to do Son to Alli

                It's easy. Sterling > Mane.

Pulisic > Alli for free? Frees up a Chelsea space to get Tammy back next GW.

I would be tempted as i think pulisic won't start vs everton after playing 9 games in a row.

Bournemouth have an incredible run of fixtures GW18-27. If only Wilson could regain some of last season’s form

Think my keeper on WC is likely to be Ramsdale.

He'll probably score goals in the next 3-4 gameweeks and then start blanking when everyone finally gets him around that time.

              What’s going on with Puli?

His returns are dropping off. Is he playing in a different position? Is it firm? Fatigue?

Far from dropping off in form he's very consistent. Just hasn't had the breaks last few games. No reason to get rid imo.

                Just lacking returns.

Looks great, he has that silky dribbling technique that so few players have. The returns should come eventually and he's been unlucky not to have notched anything recently

He's only 21 so no Fatigue for him... He should be raring to go every game

Odoi is fit again, so might see his minutes managed slightly more on the LW
