Scoutcast Episode 311 – Rashford, whipping boys and the wealth of cheap defenders in FPL

There is a nostalgic theme to this week’s episode, with Joe joined by fellow seasoned Scoutcasters Andy and Az.

Meanwhile, Joe’s ‘nostalgia pick’ of Harry Kane also comes under deserved scrutiny, especially as other strikers, most notably Marcus Rashford, are looking far more appealing.

Our trio consider the merits of drafting in the Manchester United talisman, even before a derby clash this weekend in Gameweek 16. They also reveal their favoured front three going into the festive fixtures.

Formation comes under the spotlight in their lively discussion about how the wealth of cheap defenders this season have altered the thinking of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Whipping boys are also looked at as the Scoutcast crew consider the defenders to avoid, while Az also reveals the best teams for clean sheets over the next six Gameweeks.

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy takes his turn choosing a differential after recent successes for Az’s Alli selection two weeks ago and Sam’s James Ward-Prowse punt last time out.

Elsewhere, chess champion Magnus Carlsen (and number nine in the FPL world rankings) is the star of Gameweek 15’s ‘Rough with the Smooth’ round-up of your latest scores.

This retro-charged episode also reveals Joe, Andy and Az’s strategies for Gameweek 16, including their transfer and captaincy plans.

At a bit of a loss of what to do this week... 2FT and 0.5 ITB

    Henderson
    Lundstram TAA VVD Soyoncu
    Mane Son Maddison KDB
    Vardy Abraham

    (Button -- Kelly, Cantwell, Greenwood)

Tempted by Kane... we know he's going to haul soon and I also think he'd be a great BGW18 captain.

Is it worth transferring out Pope and getting in Ryan?

Looked at fixture ticker until GW30. Don't want to be wasting Goalkeeper transfers and would like to Wildcard around future blacks if i can.

Ryan is further up the ticker.

But looking at the fixtures, how many CS's will both these teams really get anyway?

If you got a free transfer or no fires to put out, sure

Bit of a lottery with keepers at the minute so I'm of the mind stick with who you have until jan WC

You had Pope for his hardest fixture, is it worth selling now?

Interesting now that Chelsea are now able to sign players in January. Wonder what type of players Lamps is looking to bring in. A decent backup striker looks a must.

The January transfer window is fast approaching, with clubs looking at how they can improve their squads.

The window in England starts on New Year’s Day, and closes at 11pm on January 31.

But who is likely to be splashing the cash and what will the main talking points be?

Will Man City reinforce their defence? Jadon Sancho is attracting interest, will he or Erling Haaland be on the move? Who will press the panic button at the bottom?

… and what does your club need, and who can help them kick on?

Chelsea's transfer ban reduced on appeal. They can now sign players in January.

Is this the end for Tomori, Mount and Abraham as Abramovic and co demand Chelsea sign established players?

Maybe 1-2 players? Established players bring big price tags and they current fellas are performing decent enough

The young dudes they brought in have been great and the experience they're getting is invaluable

Abraham is great, but they looked f***Ed the moment he got injured. Batsman and Giroud not good enough. The amount of times they were statues as the likes of James delivered easy crosses into the box is a sackable offence. A backup striker, basically an Origi.

My club, Villa, aren’t expected to spend big, but if funds are available, I’d like to see us sign a new centre-forward – an alternative to Wesley.

Wesley shouldn’t be judged solely on goals (he’s scored four), he’s often isolated and works hard for the team, but I’d like to see a bit more competition for him. An upgrade on current squad players Kodjia and Davis.

If we can get a few more goals from our forward, and Grealish, McGinn, El Ghazi etc continue scoring, we should be okay.

Us here at Southampton desperately need a good centre back who can make a decent impact. Ideally young but heck, a loan for an experienced defender might suffice. Our high press means the defenders must be quick and intelligent to cover the spaces left behind
Stephens and Bednarek doing well for now, but no guarantees it'll work long term.
A midfielder who can link up the defence and attack is also another need to be filled. At times it looked like both sides of our team, def and att, looked disjointed and unable to work together.
And lastly, Ralph needs an assistant. Rohl leaving has left him an isolated figure on the pitchside. Needs a partner beside him.

433 not our current flavor, but 442/4222 hybrid. But yeah, that's basically our team selection. Stephens has stepped up big time, a savior of sorts. But I can't help feeling he's a disaster wiaitng to happen, hence why I want another CB.

Age, really. Our centrebacks need to be quick to cover the spaces left by the high press, and his pace has left him with age.

Yes we have. Abandoned that 3 at the back. And loh and behold, 2 wins in a row.

I'm happy with Ings, JwP, Armstrong, Djenepo etc. Attacking wise, it's looking good enough.
It's those base midfield options I'm questioning. Romeu has been poor, Hojbjerg inconsistent. JwP has played a few times there with mediocre success.

        Interesting.

Re Spurs - Sissoko and Winks isn’t a viable central midfield pairing, IMO.

If Dier isn’t fit enough to start games in quick succession, they need to address it.

They probably need new full-backs too. Mourinho is doing pretty well at covering that up, playing to Aurier’s strengths and moving Vertonghen to left-back, but I’m not convinced it’ll work long term.

Everton still in desperate need of a good number 9. Moise Kean (age factored in), has been a disappointing signing and Tosun and DCL are not up to scratch. Iwobi and Bernard/Walcott are not good enough in wide areas either. Fuming that we didn’t secure Zaha at the beginning of the season. We also require a strong defensive midfielder to fill the void left by Gueye and another centre back would be nice. Not asking for much!! The clubs transfers in recent seasons have been very very questionable

With a few shouts about Mitrovic on this thread. It's hard to believe he is only 25. I think a team like Man Utd could do a lot worse than going in for him. 27 league goals in 38 games in his last 2 seasons since Fulham got relegated. Managed 11 goals in the EPL the season before until Fulham's form nose dived.

Roy Keane was adamant Utd should be going in for Harry Kane. Just can't see it.

Haaland is ripping it up on the domestic scene and there will be lots of interest in him. I'd love to see him in the prem.

Arsenal need a few replacements. Crying out for a centre half more than anything.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Prem interest in Bradley Dack at Blackburn Rovers. Another 25 year old who has so much potential. He literally is a class act

All West Ham need is a CM and perhaps a new manager. Noble and Rice very little competition at all currently and we're screwed if one of them gets injured. The rest of the squad should be more than capable of performing a lot better than we are

We need an additional striker to support Haller. Pellegrini is making him look bang average without a support act. Pellegrini's inflexibility to alter tactics in response to the opponent and find a winning formula could be his undoing. The Wolves defeat was almost inevitable.

Could definitely see Chelsea re-sign Ake; in need of a good CB and he ticks all Lamp's boxes. Due to his buy-back clause, Chelsea could additionally sign for about half price at which Bournemouth rate him.
Chilwell would be a fantastic addition, but I don't really see him leaving Leicester mid-season. Kepa could use some competition, but neither do I see such a mid-season signing. So, I don't expect Chelsea to spend big, unless we unexpectedly win a bid for Sancho.

But I'll settle for a solid defensive midfielder and a central defender.

      Zielinski.

Kimpembe from PSG, or one of the Leipzig defenders.

            Worth the risk imo.
