Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 16?

Fantasy Premier League managers have a tougher decision to make for the captaincy this weekend than they did midweek.

A relatively frustrating evening for owners of Leicester attacking assets was contrasted with high-scoring affair at Anfield.

It’s these two clubs at the heart of the conversation for Gameweek 16 and, as ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help.

We’ll be comparing all the individual assets on their own performances in the last four matches and weighing them up against their upcoming opponents defensive shortcomings.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up to either a season-long or monthly deal can access it in full.

Captain Poll

The captain poll for Gameweek 16 was considerably closer than it was midweek.

Sadio Mané (£12.3m) is the current leader on 23.2% ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Bournemouth.

The Senegalese international lit up Gameweek 15 with a huge 15-point haul that arguably should have been even bigger considering he missed two golden chances.

Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth pits Mané against a defence that is now without a clean sheet in each of its last four outings while the player himself has attacking returns in each of his last two league road trips.

Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) is not far behind in second place, currently on 20.9% of the vote ahead of Leicester’s trip to Aston Villa.

Vardy has been exceptionally reliable over his last nine Premier League matches, netting 11 goals over that period, scoring in each of his last seven.

Aston Villa have kept just one clean sheet since Gameweek 6 and should provide plenty of chances for Vardy to continue his excellent run.

As Son Heung-min (£9.8m) and Dele Alli (£8.6m) compete to be considered the best Spurs asset, the two of them are very close in the captain poll too, each in with a chance of claiming third place.

The South Korean is just ahead at the time of writing (Friday morning) with 11.9% of the vote after scoring 25 points across Jose Mourinho’s first three games in charge at Spurs.

Alli, meanwhile, is backed by 10.2% having secured attacking returns in each of the last three, scoring 29 points and averaging 9.7 per game.

Both Son and Alli will fancy their chances of further goal involvements in Gameweek 16 as Burnley come to their brand new north London stadium.

The Clarets have conceded six goals in the last week while last season’s top-six sides have netted 13 times against them in four matches so far in 2019/20, an average of 3.3 per game.

Nearly 12 months on from his famous Vitality Stadium hat-trick, Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) has very much fallen off the Fantasy radar ahead of his return to Bournemouth.

The Egyptian’s midweek rest arguably makes him a more likely starter in Gameweek 16 than perhaps even Mané. With two goals in his last four starts, there is some form there for Salah, who has attracted 4.9% of the captain poll vote.

Just behind him is Tammy Abraham (£7.9m), who registered a 12-point haul in his return from injury against Aston Villa.

This weekend Chelsea travel to a managerless Everton side without a clean sheet since Gameweek 9.

Abraham remains the Premier League’s top-scorer in away matches, having found the net seven times on his travels this season, which has convinced 4.8% to vote for him in the captain poll.

That’s slightly more than have gone with Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) on 3.7%. The USA international has scored more times than any Chelsea player since he broke into the team in Gameweek 10 but has blanked in each of the last three matches.

Ahead of a Manchester derby, Kevin de Bruyne (£10.3m) is the most popular option from Pep Guardiola’s men, backed by just 2.6% in the Gameweek 16 captain poll.

The Belgian may have assisted just once since Gameweek 8 but he has found the net in two of the last three Premier League outings.

That’s enough to give de Bruyne more support than Raheem Sterling (£11.9m) whose XX attacking returns in the last X matches was good enough for just 2.3% of the vote.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m), Mason Mount (£6.6m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.6m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

What we learnt in the runup to Gameweek 16…

You might notice a few teams are missing. This is mainly because I can’t find a press conference from their boss or because there was nothing that I saw to report.

When, or if, news comes out, it will be added in at the end.

    Liverpool

Little bit of confusion at Liverpool after Klopp mentions some “little concerns” impacting his planned lineup but then says that there’s no fresh injury concerns. Also mentioned the need for his players to have a rest and that he will make plenty of changes to give them this.
    https://twitter.com/neiljonesgoal/status/1202924704773943296?s=20

    Leicester City

Gray is fully fit and ready to go but there’s still doubts around Chilwell despite earlier reports that it was a very minor thing. No new injuries.
    https://twitter.com/BBCRLSport/status/1202950279878119425?s=20

    Man City

Zinchenko is back in training and ready but Pep doesn’t know how many minutes he could play. City are also bolstered by Gundogan returning from suspension. No fresh injuries for City, Aguero is definitely still out.
    https://twitter.com/jamesrobsonES/status/1202945479534886912

    Chelsea

Chelsea had their transfer ban reduced and can now sign players during January. Abraham is “good” but will be monitored as he hasn’t done much between games. Rudiger is nearly ready, the weekend comes just too soon. Expect to see him play with the U23s this weekend. Barkley is fit. Frank has to be careful with CHO, hence his lack of minutes recently.
    https://twitter.com/NizaarKinsella/status/1202941257401675776?s=20

    Wolves

Gibbs-White is improving and Nuno hopes he’ll rejoint the team soon. Boly has improved to the point where he only needs one crutch but will remain out for a while. There are no new injuries.
    https://twitter.com/TimNash_1/status/1202939564098240512?s=20

    Man Utd

Martial has jumped from a month out to being fit for the weekend, but might not be ready to start the game yet. Pogba remains out.
    https://twitter.com/RobDawsonESPN/status/1202890430343454720?s=20

    Crystal Palace

Roy is hopeful at least one of his two injured CBs will be fit to play with Sakho suspended. No estimated return date for PVA. Ward could be looking at remaining out for over a month more. Meyer is ill and will be a doubt.
    https://twitter.com/CPFC/status/1202624349854994433?s=20

    Tottenham

Lloris, Vorm, Davies and Lamela remain out for Spurs. Lo Celso needs time. Mou doesn’t see Sissoko as a CM but has been playing him there as Ndombele and Dier weren’t in a condition to start.
    https://twitter.com/Dan_KP/status/1202946057333813248?s=20

    Sheffield Utd

Sheffield United continue to have a fully fit squad at their disposal, after having given the 3rd and 4th choice forwards a spin vs Newcastle.
    https://twitter.com/JamesShield1/status/1202913251727675392?s=20

    Newcastle

Amid the celebrations after their 2-0 win, Bruce mentioned ASM is currently not at his physical best and he’s carrying a nasty ankle injury.
    https://twitter.com/raisbeck10/status/1202712692143853568?s=20

    Burnley

Long, Barnes and Westwood will all be doubts for the weekend. Taylor is on his way back and so will also be a doubt as is Bardsley who didn’t train on Thursday. Gudmundsson is out but making good progress.
    https://twitter.com/adjones_journo/status/1202582886110695424?s=20

    Brighton

Potter spoke of today being a day to take a “body count” and recover as best as possible, but so far he has no problems to report.
    https://twitter.com/AndyNaylorBHAFC/status/1202931762474688513?s=20

    Bournemouth

3 confirmed injuries for Bournemouth with Adam Smith, Steve Cook and Josh King all out, paving the way for Francis, Mepham and Solanke to play. Harry Wilson is ineligible, Stanislas remains a way off and no further update on Brooks.
    https://twitter.com/peterrutzler/status/1202880461602775048?s=20

    West Ham

Fabianski and Lanzini will remain out until the end of the month. Antonio is a doubt, his fitness will be tested tomorrow. Wilshere and Reid are working with the squad. No mention of Snodgrass.
    https://twitter.com/Sam_InkersoleTM/status/1202930086850256897?s=20

    Southampton

Boufal has been hurting after losing his fight vs the Coffee table, so hasn’t been training. Will get a run out in training on Saturday, however will inevitably be a doubt.
    https://twitter.com/Ankaman616/status/1202945585768259594?s=20

    Everton

Duncan Ferguson will be in charge of Everton vs Chelsea, which dominated proceedings. Confirmed Mina is a doubt whilst Coleman and Delph are ruled out.
    https://twitter.com/philkecho/status/1202945673513066497?s=20

    Norwich

With a few training sessions to go before the next game, everyone seems ok according to Farke. Tettey got through 45mins and looked good despite being a doubt so should be completely fine for the weekend.
    https://twitter.com/michaeljbailey/status/1202607172015808513?s=20

    Watford

Kabasele and Pereyra are back in full training and in contention to start. Dawson is approaching a return but the weekend comes too soon.
    https://www.watfordfc.com/teams/first-team/team-news-crystal-palace-4

    Edits:

    Aston Villa (Delayed news)

About time! Davis will return to training in 10-14 days, El Ghazi will return to training tomorrow (Saturday) and DS hopes he will be in contention. Davis and Steer the only two out.

Wasn't mentioned in their team news article, but he won't be back.

Funnily enough, the official twitter made no mention of him, but the official Spanish speaking Watford one did confirm him out, if my GCSE Spanish didn't fail me.

    Ryan (Button)
TAA - Soyuncu - Lundstram - Tomori (Rico)
Sterling - Mane - KDB - Maddison (Saka)
    Vardy - Jimenez (Connolly)

Still have wildcard intact to be played for either GW18 or GW20, but it really gives me a headache thinking on what to do with my FTs this gameweek. I feel that removing Sterling could backfire big. Possible transfers I could figure out, any opinions appreciated!

    A) Connolly to Mousset and save FT
    B) Saka to Fleck and save FT
    C) Jimenez to Abraham and save FT
    D) Sterling to Alli and Connolly to Abraham
    E) Connolly to Pukki and Sterling to Son

    Ryan / Button
    TAA Robbo Lund Rico Tomori
    Mane Son Maddison Pulisic Dend
    Vardy Laca Mousset
    0.0 ITB 2 FT

I am not sure what to do with my team and I have 2 FTs. I am debating selling Tomori for Kelly as Palace have good fixtures and can keep CSs and I only use 3 defenders anyway and it is going to be Lund and the Liverpool lads. This will give me 0.7m I can then carry 2 FTs to next week. Or is there something obvious I am missing and should correct/change?

    Open to suggestions and opinions!

Got 2 Liverpool defenders and 2 FTs. Thinking of removing Robbo and Martial.

    A: Robbo/ Martial to Son/Dunk
    B: Robbo/Martial to Son/Willems
    C: Robbo/Martial to Alli/Aurier
D: Martial to a 7.6 midfielder and save FT.

Have to make the transfers tonight as several of the players in question raises in price tonight.

    Pope
    VVD, Soyuncu, Lundstram
    Salah, Alli, KDB, Mount
    Vardy (c), Jimenez, Jesus
    Button, Cantwell, Dunk, Mings
Expecting to see points on my bench and 1s and 2s on my 11 but I think I have to go with this.
