No room for the heart when playing FPL

Some Fantasy Premier League selections are made based on form, some on fixtures, some on a gut feeling and some come from the heart.

This season I am learning that the heart should not be trusted where FPL is concerned.

This is something that I have always known and I have tried historically to base my choices on tangible evidence but this season one man crept in.

This was, in part, due to the price reduction he had at the start of the season but also due to a need for a talisman, someone I really trusted alongside my maverick John Lundstram (£5.1m), John McGinn (£5.8m), Dean Henderson (£4.7m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m) picks.

Harry Kane (£10.9m), should have been the perfect striker – playing in a team who made it all the way to the Champions League final and at the low price point of just £11.0m at the time.

However, Spurs have been far from their best this season and Kane far from his, playing more as a defensive midfielder under Mauricio Pochetino than a striker.

Fast forward to Gameweek 14, Kane nearly left my team but the arrival of Jose Mourinho changed things. Would Spurs improve? Would Kane play as an out and out striker again?

Would the Fantasy hauls return?

Suddenly it was the wrong time to get rid, especially as he had a price rise with other managers bringing him in.

However, my gut feeling (which should always be followed) was to switch him for Dele Alli (£8.6m) who I spoke at length about on every FPL show and podcast that week.

Nonetheless, I held Kane who failed to return when Dele did. This has been repeated in both Gameweeks 14 and 15.

The stay of execution is over, this week Kane will go.

Having watched Kane against Manchester United revert back to playing deeper when Spurs fell behind, whilst Dele was in and around the box making all the right runs, it was apparent which Spurs asset is the one to own and it’s the one playing as the number 10 not the meant to be playing as the number 9.

Having two transfers going into Gameweek 16 means that I am able to make a change in my strike force and midfield without taking a points hit. McGinn is the unfortunate casualty in order for me to bring in Dele.

Whilst the Aston Villa man was fantastic in the early Gameweeks of the season the points have dried up of late and with a Kane downgrade up-top, I have plenty of budget to afford the upgrade to Dele. This leaves me with £8.2m for a third striker alongside Vardy and Abraham.

There are a few decent options in this price bracket.

Raúl Jimenez (£7.7m), Danny Ings (£6.2m) and Lys Mousset (£5.1m) are the three in contention for the spot.

Having used the Members Area to compare the players the results are interesting.

Don't fancy either tbh. Chelsea score a lot of goals, Bournemouth at home next week. Think mount will keep ticking over all season

Yeah. Agree. Can't have em all. Rashford is on the form of his life imo, I've had him since gw 11 I think. In no mood to get rid

Same back 5 n im probably starting kelly over soy for the fun of it.

Kdb to alli/son is a 50/50 call. Might work, might hurt. I did kdb to son to double up with alli last 2 GWs so its down to your preference

Leicester have the best defence in the league. Get soy in there for Baldock. I've also been debating Kelly or lundy. Sheffield have started conceding. And Norwich have started scoring again.

I am starting both of them for possible attacking returns, I see the match ending up like 1-3, 2-3 or 2-2....so these too cud be involved in the goals?..

Soy - Villa at home cud score against Leics?

Kelly - They have kept a CS against Bou with 10 men, but with all the injuries they cud leak away from home where they arent as solid as they are at home?

Any Villa fan here or someone who watches them alot? Thinking of bringing Trezeguet in as 5th mid from gw18 onwards to cover rotations. 3 goals from last 4 starts looks promising or has he been lucky? Most likely won’t be able to afford Grealish.

Grealish is top FPL pick - consistent and focal point of attack. Rest is fpl points spread over.

Grealish is moved up front, so that means just one slot left open and Jota is back too, that means 3 fighting for one spot. El Ghazi is the one that is the most talented of those, but hardly nailed with so many games

    On WC!

    Heaton
    TAA, Dunk, Lundstram
    Mane, KDB, Alli, Cantwell
    Vardy, Jesus, Rashford

    Martin, Trezeguet, Kelly, Rico

    Anything you'd change?

Any better cheaper options than Trez? Thinking maybe Shelvey or Traore?

Will prob take out Jesus once Aguero is back, for someone cheaper and upgrade elsewhere

      1. Don't like Heaton, Villa concede way too many shots
      2. Midfield seems a bit thin with both Cantwell and Trezeguet. Traore better in that price range than Trez
      3. No Chelsea is a bit of a gamble but that could pay off. I'd rather have Abraham in there over Rashford

        • 4 Years

Cheers which goalie would you rather have at same price?

One of Cantwell or Trez will always be on bench, is Traore more attacking?

I think Cantwell is a decent pick, Trez is the one I don't like as he isnt nailed to start every game. Traore is.

Goalkeepers at 4.5 is tough. Can you spare another 0.2 for Henderson?

Jesus on wc, that´s says no. Heaton is fine i think, oddly not getting much point like the other 4.5 goalies, not sure why. Nice fixture run for a long time.
Defense is likeable, Rico i think is questionable but not from an FPL pov but will Howe keep him in his side, still not convinced. Cantwell is playable at home not so much away, so being a fourth mid with Trezeguet as fifth, it kind of gives you Kelly as good option to play in contrast many just have him as bench cover and could prove to be smart as Palace racks up cs.
Your front line is good but feels like it shakes your team structure, Rashford is a fine pick, and on wc you might as well go for him now rater than wait: Jesus is the one i would forego.
Abraham at 7.9 gives 1.6. That´s Trezeguet to Grealish and then some spare cash, Ryan is 4.8 but Targett is 4.4, Guilbert is also 4.4 and they offers a bit more attacking wise than Heaton, could it be an option?
Auirier at 5 is perhaps a stretch but alongside some good options he is a perfect defender if you have cover as his upside is so high.

problem is will they , if benched, not figure at all? Two players that i can see getting a rest is Mané and Pulisic and if their team is up by a comfortbale lead within an hour played, then there´s a slight chance, perhaps.

Considering Klopp didn't hesitate resting Bobby and Salah midweek, every chance it's Mane's turn.

Not going into detail, but not sure you can apply same logic on different players. Firmino is so vital to how Klopp wants to play and that he needs to be fit to do, therefore he needs a rest once in a while. Salah could well be injury related but most likely, based on some of the performances before Everton a reshuffle of the side is the most reasonable cause i think. But there is a possibilty for it, but could say the same about some of the Spurs attackers, City players, Jimenez, etc.

What is odd though is that being 4-2 up 20 minutes left, why do you sub Origi and not Mané if the latter needs a rest?

could be rested for that joke of a tournament in mid december, could feature his U23 team in that semifinal and still win. And to be fair, both those games will be kind of training matches in terms of intensity, not exactly suberb quality in those teams. A bit of travel but also nice and warm weather.

I’m looking to make up ground, but Vardy doing well could make me lose even more ground with a more than favourable fixture. Mids are mostly all low owned ti counter it somewhat, but maybe not the week for a far left field pick for cap. Just my take on it.

Lots of games lately so rotation a factor across the teams in Europe. Not for Vardy though
Personally very tempted by kdb who averages 9ppg at home

Yep agreed, just that assurance factor with Vardy as well even though he is heavily owned.
Sadly i ditch KDB as part of a risk i was willing to take but plan to bring him back in maybe down the line once they pick up, hopeful my replacements keep up.

Prepping Origi and Shaqiri to play home against Everton is different than vs Bournemouth away. Klopp knows that. So his "gamble" were not to play them in that one, the gamble is to persist in playing his second choices in a tough away game at the south coast.
