No room for the heart when playing FPL

Some Fantasy Premier League selections are made based on form, some on fixtures, some on a gut feeling and some come from the heart.

This season I am learning that the heart should not be trusted where FPL is concerned.

This is something that I have always known and I have tried historically to base my choices on tangible evidence but this season one man crept in.

This was, in part, due to the price reduction he had at the start of the season but also due to a need for a talisman, someone I really trusted alongside my maverick John Lundstram (£5.1m), John McGinn (£5.8m), Dean Henderson (£4.7m) and Diego Rico (£4.3m) picks.

Harry Kane (£10.9m), should have been the perfect striker – playing in a team who made it all the way to the Champions League final and at the low price point of just £11.0m at the time.

However, Spurs have been far from their best this season and Kane far from his, playing more as a defensive midfielder under Mauricio Pochetino than a striker.

Fast forward to Gameweek 14, Kane nearly left my team but the arrival of Jose Mourinho changed things. Would Spurs improve? Would Kane play as an out and out striker again?

Would the Fantasy hauls return?

Suddenly it was the wrong time to get rid, especially as he had a price rise with other managers bringing him in.

However, my gut feeling (which should always be followed) was to switch him for Dele Alli (£8.6m) who I spoke at length about on every FPL show and podcast that week.

Nonetheless, I held Kane who failed to return when Dele did. This has been repeated in both Gameweeks 14 and 15.

The stay of execution is over, this week Kane will go.

Having watched Kane against Manchester United revert back to playing deeper when Spurs fell behind, whilst Dele was in and around the box making all the right runs, it was apparent which Spurs asset is the one to own and it’s the one playing as the number 10 not the meant to be playing as the number 9.

Having two transfers going into Gameweek 16 means that I am able to make a change in my strike force and midfield without taking a points hit. McGinn is the unfortunate casualty in order for me to bring in Dele.

Whilst the Aston Villa man was fantastic in the early Gameweeks of the season the points have dried up of late and with a Kane downgrade up-top, I have plenty of budget to afford the upgrade to Dele. This leaves me with £8.2m for a third striker alongside Vardy and Abraham.

There are a few decent options in this price bracket.

Raúl Jimenez (£7.7m), Danny Ings (£6.2m) and Lys Mousset (£5.1m) are the three in contention for the spot.

Having used the Members Area to compare the players the results are interesting.

It was about this time last year that Mo Salah scored a hat trick at Bournemouth and I had what was probably my best gameweek of the season as I captained the Egyptian whilst others were moving him on. Could lightning really strike twice? I still have Salah now and whilst half of me is hugely tempted to give him the armband, the other half of me just thinks I should flog him for the in form Deli Alli and release some serious funds in the process!

Spurs will fancy their chances at home to a Burnley side that conceded 4 to Man City at Turf Moor in the week and have shown in the past that they do not cope well when the fixtures come thick and fast.

In the Captains Poll though it’s basically neck and neck between Sadio Mané and Jamie Vardy and whilst there might be a slight concern over a Mané start given the number of games he’s played this season and a crucial game in Salzburg to come on Tuesday, the Leicester talisman would once again look to be the ‘safe’ choice.

Maybe I’ll just go Vardy again then eh?

Who are you captaining this gameweek and why?

      Vardy(c).

Seems a good fixture for him. Against a team that concedes goals, but crucially away from home, so Villa can't just sit back and defend. His ownership and expected (c) percentage makes him the 'shield play'.

You can gain OR using your differentials this GW.

Going Vardy. Stats say Villa are bottom of shots conceded in box.

Was tempted by Alli but Burnley know how to defend, and I have the feeling Mane will be rested.

Thinking of cpt Sonny. My gut tells me he is maybe the one for this gw. Have Mo and Party also but not sure about them. Mo out of form and Vardy could be a little tired, the guy is a beast but he plays every game.

I’m going Vardy because I genuinely think Mane will be rested. I can’t see any logic behind Klopp needing to play Mane when Shaqiri and Origi have just proven that they can step up to give the front 3 a rest. I think their front three will be Salah Firmimo and Shaqiri.

Vardy captain, Villa will get hammered I think.

Salah. Bournemouth defence is woeful at the best of times and right now, as a whole, they're out of sorts. Fancy Liverpool will crush them. Salah more likely to start and play full minutes than Mane I'd guess so he's my pick. Vardy vc.

Alli, in a week when Captain choice is split I like to go slightly different to the top 2 choices, if I get it wrong it hurts less. Whereas last week Vardy was 70%+ captain choice so not picking him would have hurt massively if he had got say a hattrick.

Last year I had my best OR of the season after GW 15. Then I Wildcarded and took Salah out. It was all downhill for the season since then.

So I am filled with nostalgia as this year's GW16 comes along. This time, I still have Salah. And hence, going for the nostalgia captain pick in Salah.

By the end of this gameweek, I will have a story to tell - good or bad!

If there wasn't that threat of rotation for Mané, I'd go with him because as you said, Villa away is not such an easy fixture as people think. So I'm making the safe choice with Vardy. Could go Alli but for the time being I'm happy just owning him.

On the Liverpool fans forum (thisisanfield), just about everyone is anticipating Klopp resting Robertson and Mané with Milner and Origi coming in.

There can be a lot of nonsense posted on fans forums but when every line up is along the same lines, there’s usually something in it.

So, is Mané a start but don’t captain selection this week or are you considering a more aggressive tactic? Maybe ensuring your 1st sub is decent, especially with the Gw18 blank in mind?

For those not feeling the Vardy(c) this week, maybe even a maverick Mané to Salah(c)?

Play but not cap for me. Reckon it’s 2/3 chance he gets rested

TIA itself is calling for Mane rest; Robertson play.

If I had Salah this week I would captain him. I got Mane at 11.5 though and think he’s the better option long term

Have to start him with a good sub

But that might mean nothing if he makes a sub appearance, I hope he gets a complete rest or play majority of the game.

I think a complete rest makes more sense like Klopp did with Salah last week, but I guess it depends on how the game is going.

The fact Origi did brilliantly in his start makes me think it’s a low risk for Klopp to bench Mané, despite his form.

Salah over Mane for next two before blank could work out. Surely Salah scores more if he plays one game more, right?

I think that the point here is that if he doesn't start and Pool are winning he won't come on at all. So Mane (c) with Vardy (vc) is the call from me.

Yes precisely, but you could play it more aggressive with the blank in GW18 in mind.

Would you keep Mané if you knew he was blanking in GW16 and 18, for instance? That Watford fixture is very tasty though!

What to do ? Really stucked with my 2FT. Want Kane, but that seems stupid. Obviously a big Sterling fan aswell.

        Pope ( Button )

        TAA - Soy - Lord ( Tomori, Lascelles )

        Sterling - Mane - KDB - Pulisic - Mount

        Vardy - Ings ( Wickham )
