Mané no-show increases attention on Vardy for captaincy

Fantasy Premier League managers ranked inside the top 10,000 worldwide will be looking to Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) for the Gameweek 16 captaincy after Sadio Mané (£12.3m) failed to show for Liverpool.

The Leicester man remains the favourite captain option among this season’s highest-ranking managers, although his dominance is not quite what we saw in Gameweek 15.

The Leicester man was handed the armband by over 80% of the top 10k ahead of a midweek meeting with Watford but after he secured just five points on Wednesday night, and Mané exploded against Everton, the balance naturally swung away from him.

The top 10k captaincy picks for GW16

That said, Vardy’s majority at this level is still fairly large for Gameweek 16, a gap of 19.8 percentage points between him and Mané, who was backed by 22.5%.

Furthermore, it now looks as if those who backed the Senegal international with the armband will have to rely on Vardy now anyway, considering he was rested and remained on the bench at the Vitality Stadium, where Liverpool won 3-0 without him.

Vardy was vice-captained by 26.3% of the top 10k managers for Gameweek 16, a large portion of these likely to be Mané captainers.

A 5-0 win for Spurs was good news for those bold enough to hand the armband to either Son Heung-min (£9.9m) or Dele Alli (£8.6m).

The data shows us that, inside the top 10k managers, they were seen as the differential options for the armband this week with Son backed by 11.5% and Alli just 5.9%.

They both delivered for their brave backers, the South Korean registering a 12-point haul from a goal and an assist while Alli produced two assists for a total of nine points.

Support for Nick Pope (£4.7m) among the top 10k continues to diminish considering Burnley’s recent drubbings to top-six sides.

He was owned by 38.9% going into Gameweek 15 before conceding four in a defeat to Manchester City.

That led to just 33.8% for Gameweek 16, in which Pope and his team-mates were beaten 5-0 by Spurs.

However, the Clarets do go up against Newcastle at Turf Moor in Gameweek 17 so it will be interesting to see how many stick with Pope, with Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) recently bursting onto the scene.

A combination of defensive injuries at Crystal Palace and an upturn in clean sheets has helped Martin Kelly (£4.2m) climb the pecking order among the defenders.

He helped the Eagles to a third successive shutout on Saturday afternoon, in a 0-0 draw with Watford, earning two bonus points in the process.

Kelly is still a long way off John Lundstram‘s (£5.1m) ownership in the top 10k (90.5%), but a presence in over half of squads at that level is still worth noting, especially considering Palace’s appealing festive schedule.

In midfield, Son experienced a slight dip from 38.2% to 36.1%, punishing anyone who lost faith in him with that 12-point haul.

By comparison, there will be plenty of eyes on James Maddison (£7.7m), whose Gameweek 15 goal against Watford took him from 40.7% top 10k ownership to 50.3% ahead of the trip to Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, the in-form Alli is yet to surface in the top-five most popular assets among the top 10k, highlighting his continued potential as a differential.

The main shift among the forward players saw Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) consolidate his ownership inside the top 10k.

In Gameweek 15, just 40% of them were in possession of the Chelsea man, when he scored 12 points against Aston Villa.

However, that grew to 57.5% after the Gameweek 16 deadline, in time for Abraham to blank in a 3-1 defeat for Chelsea at Goodison Park.

By comparison, Raúl Jiménez (£7.6m) has lost considerable support among the top 10k.

He was owned by 50.7% of them for Gameweek 15 but has seen his ownership at this level plummet to 36.5% now that the Gameweek 16 deadline has passed.

It is believed that a number of his sales since Thursday have been influenced by the form of Marcus Rashford (£8.8m), although the Manchester United forward – who found the net at the Etihad Stadium – remains a potential differential among the top 10k as he is not in the top three for forward ownership.

It also means that, despite a goal in each of his last four Premier League matches, Danny Ings (£6.3m) can also be used as a differential at this level.

Finally, an examination of the chip usage shows that the Bench Boost was the most popular for Gameweek 16.

A total of 1.7% of the top 10k deployed it this weekend and may, therefore, have been somewhat frustrated by the number of rotated and blanking players across the division.

The Wildcard edges closer to complete consumption by the top 10k, as 0.8% of them played it for Gameweek 16.

At this point 78.8% of them have used it, while 21.2% are holding it to best exploit the Christmas period.

I just got him in as an enabler in a mini-wc. Although it seems he's considered an active member of the squad when fit, I'm not expecting much. So my bench is effectively Mount/Grealish & Rico until I WC after 19. Simpson is the other option at 3.9.

You don’t think Rashford captaincy in GW18 at Watford and then home to Newcastle is going to far outscore Vardy at City and home Liverpool? Easy switch for me

Rashford isn’t captaincy material. At Watford? Watford will sit deep and offer nothing to break on. Assuming Pep’s learned nothing from yesterday Vardy will slaughter the City backline.

as they say, you can’t have them all.

Sometimes you need to take a -4 or just take your time over 2 weeks.

Ings and Jimmi have been doing well but have a pretty low ceiling, however they finance 3 premium mids and a decent 4th mid

Tough decisions, but generally when I don’t know what to do I roll the transfer to have a better choice the week later

          Yeah he is.

I've maintained a decent rank all season but the last few gws have been slipping 5 or 10k at a time. I was a FT away from the Vardy Abraham Jimenez frontline but just felt it wasn't going to help me climb the ranks so took my 5th and 6th hits of the season to gamble on Rashford.

But the argument for keeping Jimi is just as strong as that for getting Rash. Im already concerned about Everton's resurgence under big Dunc for Rash's next supposedly 'easy' fixture.

Not “unfoulable” but totally undefendable running at that pace with the ball at his feet - Ibrahaimovic for Ajax, Maradonna for Argentina, R9 for Inter - all could have been stopped with an illegal foul - they’re still undefendable

A lot of my coaches over the years have said ‘if you don’t get a yellow card, you’re not playing hard enough’. Sometimes it’s the best way to keep your team from conceding (ie a defence against a likely goal)

If you have to step outside the laws of the game to defend, its a sign that your natural defensive capabilities have been exceeded, in this case by an undefendable contribution from Mr Son

Those who watched Manchester derby, which was your favorite moment of the match ??

    For me there were many:
    A. AWBeast blocking everything from Raz
    B. Rashford's effort that hit the post.
    C. Hitting them so cleanly on counterattacks.

But my favorite was when Lindelof blocked as goal bound SOT & celebrated like he scored one himself. I want to see that kind of commitment from the players wearing the Jersey !!

McTominay’s rye smile after diving. Again.

But to be fair the best part of the match was watching Pep take 40 minutes to even try to adjust to the bus and counter. His comments post match are either a man lost or a man living on another planet. Not often Pep looks like the coach of a schoolboy team but yesterday was embarrassing. Ole only has one plan, starting the game ignoring it was unbelievable given how poor City’s defense is.

ordinarily I would agree, but the big lead that Liverpool have now after the City loss can only mean more rotation through to 11 Jan, then they have 2 tough fixtures.

You will need both Mane & Salah probably to get a starter each week and I don’t like 12 mill sitting on my bench

Fabinaski: Had him for 33 minutes and he got injured which led to a failed 1-week DDG punt and then a go at rotation which has largely failed. He originally replaced Ryan who went on to a series of big scores.

TAA: Started with Robertson who was getting outscored by TAA, as soon as I switched so did their scores for a bit, but the Liverpool defence has been largely disappointing to own overall.

Aguero: Swapped Sterling for Aguero in GW9 WC and he played 14 minutes total in 2 games. Took a hit in GW11 to swap them back and Aguero played and scored immediately while Sterling blanked 3 in a row.

Salah: Owned him till the start. At GW7, got Mane in place of him on my WC draft. Switched back to Salah just before the deadline because of pen duty. From GW7-11 he got 14 points, while Mane got 34. Rectified the mistake by bringing in Mane in GW12 for a double up. But Salah kept disappointing me. Finally I sold him this week for Alli and Salah gets his first double digit haul in 13 weeks!

4th midfielder choice: Everyone was in good form just before I bought them!
      Cantwell (GW6-8: 2, 2 ,2)
      Mount (GW9-11: 3, 5, 1)
      Barnes (GW12-13: 3, 3)

That's the key, the plan is clearly dribble into the box at speed and see what happens. So frustrating watching Chelsea with 70% possession not going anywhere near the box, or constantly going wide and putting in god awful crosses.

It's weird but looks like Chelsea are now better off without kante in the 11, but he's such a big name it's like he's always gonna be crammed in somewhere. Also weird that lampard seemed to have found some rhythm and form with this 11

True. It's going to be more headaches when Ruben is fit and if we buy any players in January too.
Transfer ban and injuries were a bit of a blessing in disguise, but it couldn't last forever and there were clear weaknesses in certain players. Between the young kids and aging Willian they were always going to burn out.
James is a definite upgrade on Azpi and Emerson has to play on the other side, but he's not totally convincing. Surely Kante has to be in there, even if it's for his recent scoring exploits.
Christensen's recent introduction has been terrible, especially it's effect on Zouma moving to the left of the two.
The team just doesn't seem focused or composed enough.

Tammy is only safe FPL option from your team i guess.

I'd say so. Lacking the clinical finishing needed but he should get enough chances and get the scores on the board.

Nothing new there, they had the most penalties awarded in the league last season - a function of their style of play - should continue as such

With James, Martial and Rashford attacking will always be getting more pens than most teams

Imagine having Duncan Ferguson as your manager, you'd be terrified to lose.

Everton'll be comfortably in the top half by Christmas.

I'm keeping for sure, not gonna waiver on this think he's a quality player and will get plenty of points. Of course his starting position is now in doubt as it is with a few of their players but I'm willing to take the risk

2 FTs with nothing to really do. Honestly I would consider moving him out if (and I expect he will) he plays midweek. He has looked ropey lately though, needs a rest.

What to do here, loads of options going through my head (including wildcard) but could do with some feedback please:

          Henderson
          TAA Lundstram Soyuncu Chilwell
          Mane KDB Alli Mount
          Jimenez Vardy

          Button Dendoncker Rico Greenwood

          1FT, 3.8 itb

          1. Greenwood >> Abraham
          2. Save
          3. Other?

          So Pulisic?
Jimmi to Rashford and Pulisic to Grealish?

            Pulisic has looked really dangerous.
            Bournemouth @ home next.

            Grealish can wait!
