Rashford hits 100 points and makes strong case for Christmas investment

Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United

Goals: Nicolas Otamendi (£5.0m) | Marcus Rashford (£8.9m), Anthony Martial (£7.6m)

Assists: Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) | Daniel James (£6.1m)

Bonus Points: Rashford x3 Martial x2 Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m) x1

Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) became the third player to hit the hundred-point mark in Fantasy Premier League this season as he helped steer Manchester United to a deserved derby day victory.

The forward joined Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) and Sadio Mane (£12.3m) at the top of the FPL tree courtesy of the opening goal and the maximum bonus point award from the visitors’ impressive 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Rashford earned and converted a penalty awarded, belatedly, by VAR following a foul by Bernardo Silva (£7.9m).

Rashford celebrates putting Manchester United ahead at the Etihad Stadium

That made it five goals and two assists from his last five starts for the England international, a run that has added half a million managers to his cause, prompted a £0.3m rise in value and put him at the top of the list for Gameweek 17 transfers-in.

Rashford brought in nine points for his 20.5% ownership against Manchester City and, on another day, could have treated them to a hat-trick.

He hit the bar with one long-range effort and missed a big chance when put through by one of United’s many dazzlingly speedy counter-attacks.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side broke fast and often on City throughout a pulsating derby, with the pace of Rashford, Anthony Martial (£7.6m), Daniel James (£6.1m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.3m) proving far too much for the hosts’ fragile backline.

Martial’s surprise start handed Solskjaer plenty of speed on the counter

Indeed, the personnel at Solskjaer’s disposal make United most effective on the counter, which is a major reason why they’ve taken points from the ‘big’ teams – Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal and even Liverpool – while struggling to break down opponents who sit deeper and allow them more measured possession.

That should be borne in mind by Fantasy managers eager to tap into a United side unbeaten in five matches (and with 12 goals to their name over that period) ahead of an excellent six-fixture schedule through to Gameweek 22.

The Red Devils will host Everton, Newcastle and Norwich and travel to Watford, Burnley and Arsenal. All six look winnable, but it is the supposedly toughest test of that run – a Gameweek 21 trip to the Emirates – that will probably offer them the best chance to showcase their counter-punching skills.

Those attributes were there in abundance against City, who dominated possession (71%) and attempts (22-11), but had only five shots on target to United’s seven.

Manchester City’s defence struggled to cope with Manchester United’s counter-attacks

The visitors doubled their lead from another sweeping raid forward when Martial, set up by James, caught out Ederson (£6.0m) with a near-post shot.

The Brazilian keeper wasn’t the only one surprised by Martial – nearly 200,000 managers had sold him on the back of two straight blanks and an injury that had left Solskjaer suggesting the Frenchman was only likely to make an appearance from the bench, only for him to play 71 minutes and produce a second double-digit haul from his last four starts.

The 2-0 scoreline certainly didn’t flatter United – Ederson was by far the busier keeper – but they rode their luck to keep it that way until half-time.

City had two penalty appeals for handball waved away by both referee Anthony Taylor and his VAR back-up, while Gabriel Jesus (£9.6m) should probably have scored with a flying header from a pin-point Kevin de Bruyne (£10.3m) cross.

Jesus led the Manchester City attack in the absence of Sergio Aguero

The match was considerably more nervy, and tetchy, after the break, with the mood not lightened by some unpleasant incidents in the crowd that included what has now officially been reported as racist abuse of midfielder Fred (£5.3m).

Back on the pitch, City huffed and puffed and finally forced David de Gea (£5.5m) into a save or two before substitute Nicolas Otamendi (£5.0m), on for the injured John Stones (£5.3m), headed home a Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) corner with five minutes remaining.

The Algerian then fired in a low shot that de Gea did superbly well to push away, but an equaliser would have been harsh on a United defence, which included the returning Luke Shaw (£5.4m) at left-back, that blocked and tackled heroically throughout.

The pick of the bunch was Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m), who earned a bonus point and the praise of his manager for his efforts.

“Aaron, he’s playing against Sterling out there, Mahrez out there, De Bruyne out there and they just couldn’t get past him.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Wan-Bissaka had an excellent game up against Sterling

Raheem Sterling (£11.8m) was certainly kept relatively quiet throughout.

His form is at the major end of worrying now. He has blanked in all but one of his last six starts, losing 800,000 owners and £0.2m in value along the way. He’s also started every match since Gameweek 7, marking him out as a big rotation risk heading into the Christmas fixture pile-up.

The winger is currently third for Gameweek 17 transfers-out. More surprisingly, de Bruyne is top.

The Belgian has been City’s driving force in recent weeks, but he doesn’t have the Fantasy points to show for it, with two goals and no assists from his last six starts. Much of that is down to the profligacy of team-mates who he has provided with excellent chances to score, opportunities they have all spurned.

De Bruyne was unfortunate not to get any attacking returns against Manchester United

Sales were minor heading into the weekend, but have now picked up as an increasingly fragile City prepare to visit Arsenal and then host Leicester City over the next two Gameweeks.

That second game, in particular, looks fraught with danger for a side struggling to nullify opponents’ counter-attacks, as Pep Guardiola highlighted in his post-match comments.

“We conceded a few chances on the counter. We lost balls, but in general we did what we like to do. We arrive in the final third many times. I like my team. We have to try and improve the amount of counter-attacks we conceded, or the way we play, press, push. Teams defend deep and make a counter-attack.” – Pep Guardiola

Defensively, the side’s reliance on Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) to provide some measure of stability is neither here nor there as the centre-half has been injured for so long now.

But the issue, as yet undiagnosed, suffered by Stones on Saturday is another blow to a backline that might have to rely on Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Otamendi to see off the pace of Vardy – a scary prospect for City fans and those Fantasy managers still clinging onto the hope of returns from their defensive assets.

Writing off their players, from a Fantasy perspective at least, is still premature, especially when they’ll face the defensive basket case that is Arsenal next.

But for the first time in a long time, it is United’s stars who are more likely to catch our eye this Christmas, with Rashford in particular offering form, fixtures and great value.

Kelly, mostly because now Palace defense will get tested, Brighton much better than last two opponents attacking wise. Jimenez seems to be in the points every week.. Bournemouth is team i would target these days, without Aké and Cook, plus they don´t seem good at all.

    Morning all!

    What's everyone's thoughts on Rashford?

Going to keep this up, or will he and United struggle against teams who sit back a bit more?

On paper the fixtures look nice over Christmas, and he has penalties too, potentially even if Pogba ever comes back.

He’s becoming hard to ignore. But im finding it difficult to fit him in. I’ve had KDB since day one and don’t want to lose him. Rashford is sitting at a very awkward price right now

Psychologically annoying but the way they're playing does it matter?

Often on the counter he gets left up with Martial, essentially as a striker.

Only Jesus, Jimenez and Vardy have more shots in the box than Rashford (forwards only)

Like all strikers with counter attacking teams that face a deep sitting defence and then bus’, he will have a few low points but overall should outscore the alternatives.

That said, from experience he can quite easily go 2 or 3 games without a return and Pogba in the starting lineup messes with his involvement

Jiminez will tick over pts rather than haul. Not one for the double digit performances but at around 7.5m still decent.
Likes of rashford & Abraham do have those double digit hauls and as such make them captaincy material - something Jiminez rarely is.

Want to see Utd against a side that doesn't come at them. They've struggled all season vs those sides. Lack of a mid that can open defences glaring although Fred has looked a different player last few weeks.

When i look at fixtures think the first ones look a bit iffy when you count in that United struggles vs team that does not want to play but fight, actually i think the last 3 games of that segment (Burnley/Arsenal/Norwich) looks good, Everton seems to be in fighting mode, Watford also in a fighting spirit and United does not have the quality to outplay them, hence the hesitation. But seems to get a decent amount of pens though.
I have Ings in that spot so that makes it harder, but Southamptons fixtures do stiffen up a bit towards christmas, and he is the only striker at 6-6.5 i want, so could be an option but moving from 6.1 to 8.9 is quite a huge difference, but manageable with a restructure of my team.

Becoming to hard to ignore with the upcoming fixtures and with current form he is the standout captaincy pick for GW18 WAT (A), and should be good to at least GW22 NOR (H). Ticks all the boxes for the festive period nailed starter and talisman for United. Only problem for many is how to find the extra millions to upgrade the already contested striker slots, with Vardy and Ings in red hot form.

            There are loads of options

            Rashford could do well

Vardy could have a field day away to THAT city defence

Kane, Son, Alli vs dodgy Chelsea defence

Don't panic Daniel - it's all going to be OK 🙂

He is the best forward lately only behind Vardy whose returns are out of this world. I got him in 2-3 weeks ago and pretty happy to keep longer term, especially now that Abraham doesn't look as appealing (playing with 2 fwds)

I'm keeping Tammy - I've moved funds from KDB into attack and going with Vardy - Tammy - Rashford from GW18 onwards.

Midfield of Son, Mane, Maddison, and another around 7.8 - possibly Richarlison.

I want him but can't afford him until GW18 when I will have 2FT and can do Salah (blank fixture) and Greenwood to a 7.8 - 7.9 midfielder and Rashford. Currently thinking Richarlison but I might be 0.1 - 0.2 out by then.

I sold Jesus for Rashford on Saturday. Probably my first early transfer this season. He looks really dangerous in the last few weeks. His shots out of the box are insane, could easily scored a couple more goals with a little bit of luck. Penalties and FK are a big plus too. I have him now, hope he delivers nice points in the next few weeks.

Difficult to ignore, and he is keeping my ML rival above me.

i never do early transfers but did Jimi->Rashford on Sat as I expect a double rise this week.

With an extra FT in my pocket, trying to be more aggressive until the new year plus he has Form (returns in 7/8 against top and bottom half sides) and Fixtures (sea of green. Not green? Arsenal which might as well be).

Rashford is poor mans Ronaldo without the headling ability but definitely the speed, drive, and shot. Plus he is fixture proof as he actually plays better in big games. So he will come on my WC in gw19, and I know he may blank vs stuffy NewC but he will repay over the busy Dec-Jan

Yes, but he is not TOP priority. I went for it early this week, silly gamble really but needed to go early, gives me a decent front 7 now

        Kdb, Mane, son, Maddison
        Vardy, Rashford, Abraham

He played extremely well last two but I choose to be stubborn abt it. Hate that Utd team, they have been lacking character for too long. And I still think they are bad when they cant play their counter attacking game. In other words, better fixtures mean worse performances and results for them. Have been the case for months - when that changes I will consider Rashford.

Happy with Vardy Abraham Jimenez for the next two, then will reassess.

It's common enough at this time of year. Lots getting Son/Vardy/Alli so the table's going to change tonight a fair bit. Main thing is to have Alli/Son/Vardy/Mane IMO - then event with some luck bandied about you're still keeping pace at worst. (alli was a great pick this week and could have been awesome of Vardy wasn't Vardy)

For once i i got some points out of it, Ings coming in but the amount of mané cappers was it that high? Apart from my own blatant cap call i´m mugged by those two 1 pointers from Cantwell and TAA, and the reason is if Lovren was not hurt he would have stayed on bench and Cantwell would not have been subbed in if they were up and Pukki missed that golden chance early in the game, Frake would have subbed in defensive players, while i´ve so often seen teams that have 2 or even 3 non starters getting lucky with them not coming in.
But my only regret was that stupid captaincy call, even ifit was a though behind it and it´s not like KDB were a bad pick

Spurs have conceded in 7 or the last 8 games, Jimi has returned in 6 of the last 8.

Sheff Utd one clean sheet in the last 6, Villa have scored in 5 of the last 6.

So, a defender that can’t keep a clean sheet against a team that is scoring .... or .... a forward that is scoring against a team that can’t keep clean sheets ?

They have a defence that kept 20 in 38 last year, including the current European footballer of the year, the only centreback to ever win the award, they’ve also probably the best GK in the world, they’ve the second best goals conceded in the entire league, they have the best XGc in the entire league (if you put stock in that kind of thing), and defenders who churn out attacking returns that midfielders would be proud of

Yet they have basically the lowest cleansheet count in the league

            Correction imminent imvho

selling, a blank, fixture congestion too much after 18, traveling to Qatar, big lead in the PL and the reserves that have come in to the team have scored for fun

Klopp can afford to shuffle the pack, and is doing just that.

Will bring the back in in GW25

      A) Mount -> Grealish
      B) Save ft (Mount -> Grealish probably next week)

      My current team:

      Gazzaniga
      TAA - Lundstram - Kelly
      Mane - KDB - Son - Mount
      Vardy - Rashford - Abraham

      Button - Willems - Rico - Dendoncker

I'd save, Mount could do something v Bournmouth and then 2FT for next week if needed

TAA, Lund, Rico all on 4 yellow cards .... and so is Grealish - not great in GW18 with Mane and TAA blanking

Pukki + Pulisic > Abraham + Grealish or James or Ward Prowse? 2FT
      Feel silly for dumping Abraham...

      to go with:
      Son, Mane, KDB, Zaha
      Vardy, Martinelli

        Ings
        Rashford
        Jiminez
        Vardy

Have all outscored Abraham since GW7. He’s not even best value

Get shot of Zaha would be my best advice
