Palace defence continues to attract interest despite uninspiring attack

Watford 0-0 Crystal Palace

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Vicente Guaita x3 (£5.0m), Martin Kelly x2 (£4.2m), Gary Cahill x2 (£4.5m)

The stock of Crystal Palace defenders continues to rise as they kept a third clean in a row at Watford on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles’ total of six shutouts this season is bettered only by Leicester City so far and they still have favourable fixtures on the horizon, including Brighton (home), Newcastle (away), West Ham (home), Southampton (away) and Norwich (away).

Martin Kelly (£4.2m) and Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) are likely to be the chief beneficiaries of that run from a Fantasy perspective as they both added bonus points against Watford. Goalkeeper Guaita has now scored eight points or more in each of his last three outings too.

Palace’s achievements at the back have been made all the more impressive considering recent defensive and disciplinary issues they have had to overcome in the process.

Kelly has been a reliable source of points since Ward was ruled out with injury

They kept Bournemouth out in midweek with a number of absences at centre-back and came into Gameweek 16 with similar issues.

Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) was sent off on Tuesday evening, earning a three-match suspension in the process, while Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) sustained a potentially long-term hamstring injury at Selhurst Park that night.

With Joel Ward (£4.4m) also out until January with a knee problem, it meant Roy Hodgson went to Watford with no recognised full-backs, versatile options Kelly and Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) deputising on the right and left respectively.

The Palace manager was boosted by the return to full fitness of Gary Cahill (£4.5m), who started alongside James Tomkins (£5.0m), and Scott Dann (£4.3m), who was named among the substitutes, but the injuries still continued to pile up as make-shift left-back Schlupp had to be replaced by centre-back/defensive midfielder Jairo Riedewald (£4.5m) at half-time having picked up a muscular injury.

“All these muscle injuries have to be assessed and the doctors won’t give you any idea at the moment to the extent of it, but it was forced upon us.” – Roy Hodgson

Cahill was a key player for Palace in their draw at Watford

Despite the ongoing issues, Palace continued to defend well against Watford, with Riedewald, operating very well in a position that he is not used to playing in.

“We were obliged to put Jaïro in, and he did exceptionally well in a position that he certainly hasn’t played many games for us in, and to come in, in the second half and play a Watford team who play the ball forward quickly and play with wingers and he coped very well. We were fortunate that happened because we really have been so unlucky because at the start of the season we said we don’t want injuries at right and left-back because we need [Joel] Ward and Patrick van Aanholt there all the time; we didn’t get that.” – Roy Hodgson

Palace’s best defensive asset at Vicarage Road was Cahill, whose last-ditch tackle on Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m) was his most vital contribution.

His return to fitness should not be underestimated as Palace continue to face favourable opposition over the Christmas period.

“It would be easy to say I am surprised (at Cahill’s performance), but I am not that surprised, because I knew how good a player he is. He was a regular for four years in my England team, so I knew how good he was. What I perhaps didn’t know quite so well was how it had gone for him at Chelsea, when he didn’t play as many games. So there was that element and not knowing 100 per cent if he would be the same Gary Cahill I knew from three years ago, but of course, he is.” – Roy Hodgson

Zaha has not shown much in either of the last two matches to encourage investment

However, Palace’s attacking assets are still struggling to match-up to their defensive colleagues in terms of Fantasy potential.

After scoring in back-to-back matches in Gameweeks 13 and 14, it’s now two blanks in a row for Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m).

While you could make a case that Palace were limited in attack against Brighton by Sakho’s early red card, they did not have such mitigating circumstances at Watford.

In truth, the Eagles provided very little attacking threat, Zaha epitomising that perfectly by not once registering a shot on goal. The fact that he was unable to do so against a poor Watford side is unlikely to endear Fantasy managers to him even if the schedule is appealing.

That said, Hodgson did make a point of highlighting the attention Zaha received from Watford players on Saturday afternoon, the Ivory Coast international the most-fouled player.

“It was pretty clear in the first half they were going to mark him tightly, and there is nothing wrong with that, I fully understand that, and if I had been the opposition manager, I also would have been making certain that he didn’t get much time and space.” – Roy Hodgson

James McArthur (£5.2m) and Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) were the two Crystal Palace players who came the closest to scoring.

Midfield man McArthur found himself free on the left in the first half but could not even test Ben Foster (£4.8m) with his effort, dragging it wide.

In the second period, Ayew drifted from his centre-forward berth onto the right flank, got around Adam Masina (£4.3m) with a stepover and rifled a shot over the bar.

Deeney’s presence for Watford will be a help to them under new manager Pearson

In truth, it was Watford who looked the more likely to score than the visitors. Yes, Palace defended better than their hosts but the Hornets still created better chances.

“The first half was quite even but in the second half we were the ones on the front foot, and we pushed them back for large periods of the game. We didn’t really get any clear-cut chances which we looked at and it was a bit disappointing, but it was a great performance, the lads gave absolutely everything and I’m sure we’ll go again next week.” – Hayden Mullins

In the second half, some head-tennis in midfield, helped along by Troy Deeney (£6.2m), who was making his second start in a row since coming back from injury, set Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) on a run through the middle. The former Everton man could only place his effort wide of Guaita’s goal.

Late-on, a rare error from Kelly gifted the ball to Andre Gray (£5.6m), triggering something of a goalmouth scramble.

Tomkins’ tackle only went as far as Deeney, who scuffed his shot. Sarr managed to get on the end of the loose ball but Guaita smothered it to secure the point and clean sheet for Palace.

With Nigel Pearson appointed as the Watford manager on Friday, it was too late in the week for him to have much impact on selection and tactics. Therefore, it must be said that there is only a limited amount we can glean from the Hornets’ latest outing moving forward.

“(Nigel) just said a few words with the lads, he introduced himself, went around the group and shook everyone’s hands. He had a few words to say just before the boys went out which was brilliant. I think one of the reasons the club appointed him is they know his pedigree, he’s a top manager and he’s got a good group of players, which is brilliant as well.” – Hayden Mullins

Watford XI (4-2-3-1): Foster; Masina, Cathcart, Kabasele, Femenía; Capoue, Doucouré (Chalobah 78′); Deulofeu, Pereyra (A Gray 77′), Sarr; Deeney.

Crystal Palace XI (4-5-1): Guaita; Schlupp (Riedewald 46′), Cahill, Tomkins, M Kelly; Zaha, McArthur, Milivojevic, Kouyaté (McCarthy 83′), Townsend (Benteke 73′); Ayew.

Trying to figure out where I can get funds to go Jimenez-> Rashford, TAA feels a bit like a luxury player so I’m mostly tempted to remove him, maybe for Aurier?

    My team:
    Pope, McGovern
    TAA, Lundstram, Soyuncu, Rico, Kelly
    Mane, KdB, Maddison, Alli, Son
    Vardy, Jimenez, Mousset

TAA is becoming popular as a bank atm with Watford, blank, Leicester and 4 ycs. You would expect a CS vs Watford.

Rashford is the second higest points scorer amongst strikers. He has delivered over time this season and tbh has been quite good for most of the time ole has been at the club. Before Ole he had a goal ratio of 0.19 per match and after it is something like 0.48. Basically scores every other game, has assist potential and on pens for the club that get the most penalties

    Morning everyone,

    This is my team;
    Henderson
    TAA Soyuncu Rico Kelly Lundstrum
    KDB Mane Son Tielemens (Dendo)
    Vardy Jimenez Abraham

Have 0.6 ITB and 1 FT.

Need to rid of Tielemens ASAP as he's dropping rapidly.

Would you do Jimenez & Tielemens to Ings & Maddison for -4?

    Thank you in advance!

Any other suggestions are much appreciated!!

Hi all. Whilst Kelly is on the rise and has racked up 3 consecutive clean sheets for Palace, another budget defender has recently come to my attention. El Mohamady (4.2m) at Aston Villa. The skipper of Egypt has had to be patient this season whilst he's been watching Fred Guilbert fill the right back position. He did manage to score in the 2-1 win against Wolves in the EFL cup at the end of October, and has got back into the starting 11 in the last 2 league games. An assist against Chelsea in GW 15 prior to a a 4-1 drubbing by Leicester on Sunday. Though on paper, it reads worse that it is.
His heatmap is quite impressive producing stats as if he was a winger. Against Leicester he managed 7 penalty box touches which was only 2nd to Jamie Vardy (9). He attempted 8 crosses into the box though only managed 2 successfully. He also got on the end of 2 crosses with his head.
I don't expect El Mohamady to move the earth. Though I do think if they keep a clean sheet, he has potential to score well at both ends. Interestingly, Guilbert came on for Matt Target as left back after he'd taken a knock.
Aston Villa's next 5 fixtures are shu, SOU, NOR, wat and bur.

My opinion is that they are going to turn to him and his experience to help them creep away from the relegation zone and the fixtures give them every chance of doing that.

If he can retain his place, we could see the 32 year old offer us decent value for money. Last season his stats in the Championship read quite well. 41 games, 2 goals and 8 assists picking up just the one yellow card.

With the blank GW18 almost upon us, he could be a decent shout for those wanting to mix it up a little?

I'm not sure mate. Personally I think he'll keep his position.
I believe Guilbert can play anywhere across the back line and he could push Matt Target for his spot depending on his injury

I was hoping you'd pop up Tom. If Targett is deemed unfit, surely Guilbert would slot in at left back before Neil Taylor?
El Mohamady has looked decent going forward but I thought his experience would play a big part especially with Mings' hammy looking worrying?

If Targett is out, I'm pretty sure Neil Taylor will come in. Smith tends to like right footers on the right, left on the left, he's talked about it being better for balance / build up play a few times.

Whilst I like Elmo, he can be a liability with his positioning, and if we want to tighten up, Guilbert is our best bet. Mings should be back for Sheff Utd too.

Interesting but ultimately a no. Villa's defense looks very poor. They were completely exposed against Leicester. They could've shipped 6 or 7. Would much prefer Palace defense. Cahill or Kelly seem fine.

I hear you Camzy. To be fair, Leicester are in the elite when it comes to getting in behind. On another day, Vardy could easily have come away with a couple more goals and unfortunate not to get an assist or 2 thrown in

I brought him in on a WC in GW2. From then onwards he was benched for Guilbert. He’s been sat on my bench wasting away ever since. I’ll be buzzing if he gets his place back. Will deffo play him in GW18 if that’s the case.

Finally get a team I like as the first wildcard deadline looms, standard - is it before GW20 starts?

Anyone with any big ideas? Go back to Robbo+TAA..or is that double-up dead?

I would not go Robbo + Taa, I lost quite a bit of points on that. Gives benching headaches with Soy, Lund other cheap options. Also a lot of pricier options emerging means that you don't want that much tied up in defence.

Yeah getting rid of TAA has worked quite well for me - but if Liverpool can go on a sustained clean sheet run they will rack up points - just trying to find a way to make my late WC an advantage

I don't think it's close because Kane is overpriced compared to the Tottenham mids.

Rashford meanwhile is on much better form and has PKs as well, and KdB is still a chance creating machine who is coming into a good run of fixtures.

What to do with 2FT and £0.6m ITB?

    A) Pulisic & Jimenez -> Alli & Ings?
    B) KDB -> Son
    C) Other

    Guaita, Button
    Robertson, Soyuncu, Rico, Lundstram, Ward
    KDB, Mane, Maddison, Pulisic, Cantwell
    Vardy, Abraham, Jimenez

I am keeping him for Norwich game and then he is out of my team as well, mostly as I want to wait another week to decide who to get as my 4th mid, too many options on my watchlist - Grealish, Richarlison, Martial, Pulisic and if I find a way to squeze extra cash then Alli comes into consideration as well.

Crikey mate, I can understand why you're asking for advice.
I think Ings will be a bit miffed you've got him in that list. Zaha and Palace have been woeful going forward but I can see him causing problems for Brighton. I don't even want to suggest benching anyone. I don't have the logic to do it. If it's any help at all, I think Brighton will break Palace down. I'd also expect Villa to score with how Jack Grealish is playing

Thinking about WC ... team draft would be :
    Guaita (Martin)
    Aurier-Kelly-Lund-(Rico)-(Fuchs)
    Salah-Son-Martial-Zaha-(Trossard)
    Vardy-Kane-Rashford
    Thoughts????

    Current team:
    Hendo(Button)
    Aurier-TAA-Lund-(Mings)-(Rico)
    Mane-Alli-Zaha-KDB-(Saka)
    Vardy-Kane-Mousset

Looks good but would still go Mane over Salah. Would not keep Zaha on WC - downgrade to fodder and play Trossard or get Grealish instead. Chilwell back so Fuchs probably won’t play. Would keep Alli in there ahead of one of Son/Martial too, and not sure Kane is worth the ££ longterm over Abraham

I think Salah 100% fit will outscore Mane in the upcoming fixtures, not to mention pens. Zaha is a good differential in my opinion, nailed over festive fixtures which look great for Palace. Trossard is there explicitly to cover Salah(gw18), I will then shift funds to bring back 2-3 Pool players. Chillwell is injury prone and I think he will het rotated some of the games over the busy Christmas period. As for Alli\Son choice, I could go with either but Son is a bigger threat imo. Last but not least, Harry the Anglo-Saxon Alpha Male is back and glad to keep :))) ...expecting big from him !!

Maybe not. Depends who the 6.7m would be. Grealish a good shout imo. Or Mount if Chelsea get back on it

Yeah, there’s a few good options around that price like Mount/Grealish/Tielemann. Easy to switch if one gets cold and another hits form

Tielemans is an awful option, the others are good

Palace defence continues to attract interest despite uninspiring attack

Whats with the headlines nowadays? What's the need for ...despite uninspiring attack. How does the attack (uninspiring or not) affect one's view regarding Palace defence?

Lol I thought that, bit of an oxymoron there.

Thought the exact same myself. In fact, I would see that having an uninspiring attack is even better if its clean sheets you are after so, in that respect, maybe the headline write got it right!

Disagree. If a team is winning 5-0 then they'll not take defending quite so seriously and will often concede a silly goal. Man City used to be a good example of this. Teams that don't score many goals often get by with having good defences whose players concentrate on keeping that vital clean sheet.

    I have money. I have 2 FT. I have Tielemans v Norwich.

Do I swap for Maddison for one fixture or keep him as a (last chance) differential?

Swap. I took him out for Grealish
