FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Gameweek 17

After the end of a frenetic week in which three Gameweeks were contested, Fantasy managers now have a little time to take stock and assess their options ahead of the next flurry of games.

There are still five Gameweek deadlines to negotiate between now and New Year’s Day and planning for the festive period is likely to be at the forefront of many of our thoughts.

Blank Gameweek 18, Manchester City’s misfiring midfielders, Tottenham Hotspur assets and rotation are other topics that may well be dominating the agenda.

We’ve assembled another panel of managers to help you out with any Fantasy-related dilemmas you may have for this weekend and beyond.

WHO’S ON THE PANEL THIS WEEK?

G-Whizz – A valued member of our moderator team and currently in his fifth FPL season, G-Whizz managed a personal best finish of 4,404th in 2018/19.

Andy – Pro Pundit, Let’s Talk FPL host and occasional Scoutcaster, Andy has come aboard to Fantasy Football Scout full-time recently. He has two top 10k finishes and an additional three inside the top 20k over the last nine years.

Lateriser – Another one of our Pro Pundits, Lateriser has registered two finishes in the top 200 (one of them equating to number one in India) and four in the top 10,000 in the last six seasons.

It's pretty difficult to back against him isn't it?

I'd love to captain Mane but not sure the upside is there.

    A) Jimenez to Abraham
    B) Jimenez to Rashford, downgrade Pulisic to get there, then downgrade Trent to get Abraham a week after, for a total cost of -4

B seems like a bit too much work to squeeze Rashford in, I think...

What to do with Zaha? Got the money to get Son but felt like giving Zaha 1 more chance.
Wasn't patient with Mount (got Zaha) and Salah (got Alli), just don't want to make the same mistake.

I’m aware of his poor performances, but I think it’s a transfer that could backfire as he could easily do something vs Brighton at home.

I also think it’s important to have 2FT going into GW18 blank.

      Sell

He’s been decidedly average all season and Palace aren’t playing with the same pace on the counter and have no real target man for him to feed off.

Zaha is going to be such a frustrating one to own.

Because Palace's fixtures are so good you're always going to have "One more fixture" syndrome

And when he finally gets something it will feel like he needs to be kept.

But Palace look rubbish going forward...

Aubameyang owners, what are you doing with him?
    .
Had a plant to transfer him out for one of Rashford or Tammy but his 27 points in last three matches made me think twice.
On the other hand not owning Rashfor/Tammy is a matter of head ace.
    .
    a) Auba to Rashfor/Tammy this week? Thus I can upgrade Pulisic to Alli next week
    b) Go without Rashfor/Tammy? Pulisic to Grealish next week?

Why don't FPL take hits into account when deciding highest scores? The guy with the highest score of 127 took 48 points in hits so is really nowhere near highest in reality. How hard can it be to only count net scores? No doubt those playing these games will all qualify for the cup too at the expense of people who really got a better score.

  21. Man City IN for Arsenal?
    Pep Pig
    • 7 Years
    4 years, 4 months ago

After watching the West Ham v Arsenal game last night, I'm tempted to bring in Man City attacking assets.
The first half was absolutely woeful. Stale is an understatement. The sloppy defending allowing Ogbonna's goal was typical of how the game was going. There was no drive, no passion, no pressing, nothing.
I wondered if Freddie Ljungberg could produce a rollocking of all rollockings that would give this team some spark. It was so attacking on paper.... they needed a spark to say the least. Several needing real life rockets shoved where the sun doesn't shine!

Though the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half was even worse. Lackluster, lazy, a kind of unforgiving mentality being shown from such an attacking team on paper.

The Martinelli produced a smart finish from nowhere with some good work down the left from Kolasinic. It instantly changed the game. Arsenal had arrived at the London Stadium. They started playing with urgency and completely dominated the rest of the game. Confidence was apparent and some of the football was easy on the eye.

Aubameyang assisting Pepe for a fine finish indeed, who then returned the favour a few minutes later.

Though that wasn't enough for me personally. Aubameyang who sat it my side up until last night has become Rashford.

I was also still a bit miffed how he left the field against Brighton with just a few minutes to go to have a dump. They were chasing the game. Thanks for the parting gift though.

Briefly going back to last night, I can't understand at all why it took so long to find their stride. For a team who apparently had a handful of captains this year, I couldn't spot a leader on the pitch. I believe Man City are going to turn this team over and in style.

KDB's energy in the midfield will be unmatched by some margin. My early predictions for this game would be a similar score to last season's 1-3 victory to City.... But if Man City score early (which I expect them to with a high tempo), it could be a cricket score.

If last week's Manchester derby result doesn't have a positive effect on this team, I'd be extremely shocked. I think we are going to see a ruthless performance against Arsenal. My thoughts are Jesus, KDB and Sterling to name a few, are going to have a field day against this team.

Very kind mate. I don't own KDB at this very moment. I swapped for Son in GW 12 which has paid of so far. My current plan is to make the switch back towards the end of this week. Then Sterling may join him for the Leicester game when Liverpool blank if the Arsenal game goes how I expect.

Watched the game too and I have to say it was up there with one of the worst Premier League games I've ever seen from both sides, and that first half was definitely the worst I've ever seen Arsenal. They made so many mistakes at the back but West Ham were so poor they couldn't capitalise on it! If Arsenal play anything like that in the next game City should cruise to victory. Also if Leicester weren't at home to Norwich I'd be considering captaining Ings at home to West Ham too

      1. Pep Pig
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Yes it does read well for Ings owners. I'm currently on Salah despite fully expecting Man City and Leicester to be in the goals. Though the recent changes of the front 3 have been successful and worry me slightly. (Just slightly)

        1. Carlton_Goal
          • 8 Years

Ings owners should have a great time as supposedly Pellegrini will still be in charge for the Southampton game. Salah a great option too but the rotation is a fear with the heavy schedule coming up. Loads of great captaincy options this week but I think I'm going to be sticking with Vardy again

Arsenal were really poor last night for the first 60 minutes. I did like the reaction of the players to the goals and the win. They've been lacking leadership and have been really low on confidence, which really showed in their game. As a fan I hope they can finally turn it around, but I'm not sold on it yet. I still don't trust their defence, and I expect City to take full advantage of their weaknesses. But City's defending looked a real mess against United as well, so I think we'll see goals at both ends.

      1. Pep Pig
        • 7 Years

I agree mate. I just can't see anything other than City starting with a fast tempo. I don't see Arsenal having the resilience to soak up the pressure though I could be wrong. I'm not stating any that Freddie won't already know. It will be interesting seeing how he sets up

On Saturday i made probably my first early transfer for this season, Jesus out for Rashford, but after that game last night maybe I wish I didn't do it. I could easily regret it now. Now I can only hope that Rashford scores some points against Everton.

      1. Pep Pig
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

They could both easily haul this weekend mate. The thing in your favour is Man City have much more attacking threat and can easily spread the goals out. Rashford is looking like the "go to" man

Nice write up Pep Pig. I definitely wouldn't be selling any City assets this week, not sure if I would be bringing any in though. They don't seem to be as fluid or as clinical this season, maybe Sane's loss to the team is greater than we think. Hopefully KdB has a monster day, a goal and a couple of assists would be lovely!

      1. Pep Pig
        • 7 Years

Thanks Mingo. I just have a strong feeling about City going forward. I think the loss of Laporte has proven to be bigger than anything. That said, I expect a huge performance against Arsenal. KDB will be influential (as always) in the next 2 games. They can't afford to drop any more points and personally, I think they will back that up in their next 8 at least

      Great post Pep, cheers.

I’m tempted to ‘downgrade’ Mane to Sterling given all my ML rivals now have him (Mane). Especially with a blank in 18. I already have KDB but it would give me funds to upgrade a potentially injured Mousse T to Abraham, albeit for a -4 (though could wait a week as bench is strong).

What do you think. Crazy talk?

It's different but I'd much prefer mane and KDB in my side for this week. I'm bringing Sterling in for Salah for the blank even though it's Leicester. That said, who would you want to captain?

Check this out, a friend has been playing FPL this season using ONLY English players.

To date, he’s used the following…

    Henderson, Pope
Chilwell, Holgate, Keane, Kelly, Lundstram, Maguire, Targett, Tarkowski, Trent, Walker, Wan-Bissaka
Alli, Cantwell, Grealish, Hayden, Hudson-Odoi, Maddison, Mount, Stephens, Sterling
    Abraham, Ings, Kane, Rashford, Vardy

He currently has 982 pts and sits at 10k OR – amazing.

Interesting rule, you could have the following team with a current value of 104.8 (which is pretty doable) or the 100.0 from GW1:

        Ryan (McGovern)
        Robbo Pereira Soyuncu (Rico Schelotto)
Mane (vc) KdB Son Richarlison (Tettey)
        Vardy (c) Jimenez Pukki

        1082 points without autosubs = OR 6.
        1096 points with autosubs = OR 2

And if you went KdB(c)/Mane(vc) during Vardy's tough fixtures early on (until the LIV game in GW8) and then switched to Vardy(c)/Mane(vc) from then on, you would have 1125 points, 16 ahead of current OR1 and with a much nicer team.

All this with a very restrictive self-imposed rule. Crazy.

          Interesting!

I tried to play with normal team last year and had a pretty poor finish (plus boring) whereas my best finish of top 11k was with this restriction. Small sample size to derive any conclusion but I find this more exciting.

Its ok with Vardy, Abraham, Alli and Kane perform. But if Mane, Salah etc outscoring many English players it will be difficult.

For some reason I assumed Lundstram was Scandinavian! Very impressive achievement by your friend, helped massively by the resurgence of English attacking talent.

Interested too see what could've happened if he used opposite tactics. No English players but only foreign ones...

Not sure about alternative but he's a good option.

I'm just not sure I want to get rid of Jimi, Abra or Vardy is all, but I do have an extra midfield slot

I think so. Cheaper, OOP and an extra point for a goal. Rashford is in great form but at one point Martial was seen as the better option. Both good picks in my opinion.

I've got Tony, not losing him. Would like Rash too, but double up probably too much as we have no way of knowing how Utd will do against sides that sit back.

Is there a danger Lund is going to prove to be this season’s Doherty?

Never got Doh last time - went Jonny 🙁 - but that proved a blessing in the end. Overtook heaps of teams that clung onto him for his early season form and ignored that he was very average from GW 15 or so.

I was thinking this when I was watching Wolves.

It is very close to what Doherty did. Burst onto the scene with 4 x double figure hauls and wasn't very good for the rest of the season.

BUT, he was so cheap you could just keep him. I didn't feel the need to play him every game.

I think right now people feel like they have to play Lundstram every game

Up until recently you had an attack minded midfielder in a decent defensive team. Maybe Sheff U are being sussed a little bit by teams now which negates the latter, but since cleanies are so hard to predict to play him is a no-brainer

The fact that he was 4.0 and is genuinely, genuinely OOP (actually ridiculously OOP) give him an exemption from long runs of blanks that other players wouldn’t normally enjoy

Shaping up to be a 2-2-2-1-2-15-2-2-2-1-2-15 merchant, and I’m ok with that 🙂

I’ll be holding him as a GW2 4.0 but think he may revert to first or even second sub when I switch out of template defence.

Think the point above about SU being worked out is possibly valid. Attacking returns are nice but I’m primarily looking for cs in playing defenders.

Could well be, but if you got in him for cheap it is an easy hold, even if he is not returning to bench rather than 1st XI status.

    Good to go?

    Ryan (Button)
    Soyuncu Lundstram Kelly (Rico Tomori)
    KDB Mane Alli Pulisic (Dendoncker)
    Vardy (c) Ings Rashford

    Help, please...

    Better to have...

    A. Grealish as a fifth mid with three quality strikers (so likely on the bench most weeks) and someone like Dunk in defense
    B. Cantwell / Dendoncker as the fifth mid (on the bench most weeks) and VVD in defense

Grealish would probably contribute more than Cantwell / Dendoncker when needed from the bench, but I'm thinking upside from VVD over Dunk (or someone similar) is probably greater.

    Thoughts?

No point having Grealish if you are not going to start him.
